  1. I don't know a whole lot about mac PCs, but I recently came across an old imac I plugged it in and fired it up it works fine. So I started looking at what specs I could locate hears what I found 256mb ram, 2 3gb hard drives. I don't know if it is using an intel processor or a risk processor. My question is it possible to install Windows 98 FE on it.
  2. I am working on reimaging several laptops throughout my my network and I have to go in and set all the laptops to join my network manualy I was wondering if it was possible to do these settings in a batch file. Hears the proccess you normaly take to do it. Control Pannel>Network Settings>Wireless>Pref Network>Enter Settings Picture shows how more clearly http://img25.imageshack.us/i/setupfbe.png/
  3. The Programs menu dose not work correctly & the recent programs dose not work. Quick Launch items appear in the right instead of the left. There are no notification Icons. I think if I modify a few values it will work better. Google Chrome has issues with XP's explorer on WIN 7. I just thought it was neat.
  4. I did not think it was possiible, but explore.exe crashed in Win 7 and I poped open taskmanager & was going to relaunch it but I suddenly had an idea I launced the explorer.exe for XP on my secondary harddrive and it worked bugy but it worked! I am going to try Vistas next see if it works this may help users who want the classic explorer experence. http://img37.imageshack.us/my.php?image=explore.png <<<picture
  5. its alright Gizmo works and with the batch file it re-shares the drives on PC startup :-) in windows 7 all you have to do is go: Start>Run>diskmgmt.msc
  6. I don't have enoth power on the machine to run virtual server so I am going to stick with Gizmo it supports .VHD and a few other formats I did however find a small issue if you network the drive the next time the PC restart the virtual drives are no longer shared, but I created a batch file that automaticly re-shares the virtual drives . this will make backups much easer it allows me to limit the size of each drive and then burn them to dvd ectra . This is going to make backups much easer and more organized.
  7. Yep gizmo works I have to buy an actual server sometime soon the PC I am using has a "server" is getting old, but at this time there is no $$$ in the budget this will help me keep backups per person and it has some basic encryption features so that always good
  8. I manage a small network at a small business and we use one XP Pro with 160gig of memory and I was wondering if it would be possible to mount a .vhd has a hard drive and use it has a network drive. I believe if I can mount the drive when the users of the Peer-to-peer network it will make it easer for me to back up one file containing all there files. I have found software for mounting .ISO but nothing for .VHD thanks helpdesk98
  9. I have been doing a small bit of experimenting with windows 7 installation process: NOTE: Myself & several others have tried these methods with mixed results I have taken what we tried and compiled it into a a list of steps results may very =========================================== Basic Tutorial Windows 7 Install Without DVD =========================================== Note: this method is recommended for advanced users; this may or may not work for you; always make backups before modifying your system. (this is assuming your system meat Win7 requirements) Method #1 Prerequisites: Must have 2 partions on your hard drive one part of the partion must have an older version of windows on it it must have enoth space to hold the windows 7 ISO (the other partion can be blank or have an older system) Download Windows 7 RC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx) Download Drive Clone (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html) 1.) Install Drive Clone 2.) Mount 1 Drive Clone CD Drive 3.) Mount Win7.ISO to Drive Clone CD Drive 4.) Begin Setup of Windows Note: you will be asked to select partition select the one you wish to use //The setup will extract all nessary files & then expand most of the files your system will reboot select windows 7 when booting you no longer need the CD Image to install Windows (all the nessary files have been extracted) the installation will continue has normal. 5.) If all went well you should be enjoying your windows 7 Method #2 it is almost the same idea (Prerequisites the same) Need 2 PCs & a network connection 1.) Network the computer you want to install 7 on to another PC 2.) Install Drive Clone (on the 2ed PC) 3.) Mount 1 Drive Clone CD Drive (on the 2ed PC) 4.) Mount Win7.ISO to Drive Clone CD Drive (on the 2ed PC) 5.) Tell the Drive Clone CD to be shared on the Network 6.) On the PC you wish to install 7 to access the CD drive you just added to your share(s) 7.) Begin setup of windows on the PC over the Network the rest should be the same **Note I have NOT tested method #2** It should in theory work fine but it may not when I preformed my install I mixed method 1 & 2 and it worked fine my Friends managed to do it with methods 1 & 2 Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't.
  10. there is progress but it has been slow I am learning to code in VB6 has I go along with the program
  11. the vb6 version is still in development I just go my VB6 cd two days ago so I got to leaRN the language. It will look like xp's start menu but once I get the core program working I will begin to move away from the xp theam.
  12. At this time I am not a skilled programer, but I see this has a way to better my skills. I hope to someday contribute programs that will help keep 98 alive. A side note the start menu is not going to be exactly like xp's I am adding a bit of my own flavor :-)
  13. you can still get it on ebay i did some research and it looks like there is a load of resources on the web I can use to learn VB6 instead of VB2005/08
  14. I have received my Visual Basic 6 CD that I bought off ebay today I can begin to program for 98 users.
  15. ... 971.93 KB (995254 bytů) ... why BMP? Realy addon XP menu to win 98? What? The BMP is a screen picture I took of the XP start menu that I am designing. I am just making a imitation of XP's start menu I may have a small beta sometime soon, but I would like to do some more testing before I provide a download. Hope that answers your question.
  16. In some of my post I have been unclear so I want to go back and fix them. Recently I was asked to create a start menu for Vista that somewhat emulates XP's start menu. I also decided I wanted to make one for 98 too. I found out that .Net programing works on Vista no problem, but has for on a Windows 98 machine it is sketchy. So I am making to Versions of the XP Start menu one for 98 (Using Visual Basic 6) and one for Newer machines (using Visual Basic 2008). Down below has I get more finished I will post it. ============== Details XPBlue for 98 ============== This Version is built with Visual Basic 6. =============== Details XPBlue for Vista =============== This Version is built with Visual Basic 2008.
  17. thanks for the input I did notice the some of the programs mentioned above shortly after making the post, but I did learn things through this process I learned a few new tricks in 08. I got my VB 6 Ordered and it should be to me the beginning of next week hopefully it wont be too hard to go from VB 08 to VB 6.
  18. I have been trying to create a basic instant messenger for a Local Area Network, but I can not figure out ware to start I found a method that work for VB 6 but I am using VB 2008 so the setup is not the same. Private Sub cmdclose_Click() sckMain.Close txtlog = txtlog.Text & "Connection closed!" & vbCrLf End Sub Private Sub cmdConnect_Click() sckMain.RemoteHost = txtip.Text sckMain.RemotePort = txtport.Text sckMain.Connect End Sub Private Sub cmdHost_Click() sckMain.LocalPort = txtport.Text sckMain.Listen End Sub Private Sub cmdsend_Click() sckMain.SendData "[" & txtname.Text & "] " & txtsend.Text txtlog = txtlog.Text & "[" & txtname & "] " & txtsend.Text & vbCrLf txtsend.Text = "" End Sub Private Sub Command1_Click() MsgBox ("Enter the host IP to connect Only 2 Peers can Talk at one time") End Sub Private Sub sckMain_ConnectionRequest(ByVal requestID As Long) If sckMain.State <> sckClose Then sckMain.Close End If sckMain.Accept requestID txtlog = txtlog.Text & "Connected to: " & sckMain.RemoteHostIP & vbCrLf End Sub Private Sub sckMain_DataArrival(ByVal bytesTotal As Long) Dim Data As String sckMain.GetData Data, vbString txtlog = txtlog.Text & Data & vbCrLf End Sub I there any way I can do this in VB Express 08?
  19. I tried my program on a 98 it worked, but I found that the way it receives the updates from me dose not correctly work in most cases and the alternate to getting the updates is to install a package of txt files so now my plan is to get on ebay and buy Visual Basic 6. I still want to make the program, but I think it will be more stable if I use VB6
  20. After Some thought I have decided to opt out of this project. Windows 98 is not the best candidate for .NET programing if you are interested in an auto updates program look at this topic for auto patcher: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=80800 thanks helpdesk98
