  1. [emphasis added] Serious software rules!!! Maybe Win32 applications aren't going the way of the dodo after all, the breezy predictions of some folks notwithstanding. --JorgeA P.S. Note, too, the reference to tablets as a "dying market." +1
  2. But I don't want to do business computing! I want to play with metro! Just joking ;-)
  3. here you go http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174208-windows-10-deeper-impressions/?p=1112413
  4. i am terrible I use Drive XML and CD-R also and a 1tb WD My Book drive I keep my back CD-Rs at work and the drive at home. I have other means of backup, but I don't want to rely on them, because they are in my home as well. Single point of failure!
  5. I used to be a cloud junky, but I always maintained my own physical copies in multiple formats. Sometime last year I pulled most of files off the web no I am going through them. The only cloud services I use are amazon instant video (I have no need to store video files) Hotmail and I store some non essential files on my web server.
  6. I met an individual over the weekend that likes Windows 10 when I asked him why he would not say. :-)
  7. Gparted is good the .iso you got is probably the small Linux live image needed for gparted to run. it is probably small enough to burn to a CD-R. I think clonezilla is a Linux imaging tool it probably has a live image you need to boot(I believe it can still clone windows OS). If you using XP Drive Image XML might be good for you. you will need to make PE media for Windows or use the Live System image on their web site. 8. I checked a machine that had the infection on it and found nothing in that directory, however, I did find evidence of it's existence!
  9. I think MS wants to go the way Apple did with proprietary hardware/software and still find a way to make an extra buck off it's users.
  10. DO they have MS Office Apps for metro? I wonder how watered down they would be?
  11. Macintosh! I miss those days! I ran one up until about 2010 when it met its down fall. Water and electronics don't mix well. I hated the UI, but loved the fact that it just kept going also it had more than 2 usb port (if you include the keyboard ports). If given the choice resurrect my dead Macintosh PC or install Windows 10 I would run for that cabin in the woods NoelC was talking about!
  12. Something like this? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/25/linux_foundation_scraps_individual_membership/ after reading that it dose disturb me, however, I am Linux on a Physical test computer and I am using it every day it has almost become my primary PC with the exclusion of stuff I do for work I am not ready to trust that stuff when I have a perfectly fine Windows 7 setup. I guess I am going to have to start vetting my choice in software again lol got lazy.
  13. maybe the hardware is too different. I know if you swap too much out on your system and try to run Windows it will ask for reactivation.
  14. Windows 10 is a mess. Edit: this was my original post it turns into a rant especially near the end Well hopefully people will start speaking with their wallets (by that I mean not getting W10 perhaps moving on to something else) and not feed the MS beast. I was hesitant about moving to 8 after running a preview build and then I was able to make 8.1 work even though I believe it is a few steps down from Windows 7 then 10 has come along and it is a drunken mess! No one wants to deal with that guy at the end of the night yet ms Keeps pushing him on us expecting us to give him a home. Then every 4hrs or so he drinks water (gets cumulative update) and pukes on the floor.
  15. Do you mean: 1) what to do if you're currently running Windows 10; or 2) what to do if you don't want to run Windows 10 ever? If (1) above, then you can try to get as close as possible to a Windows 7 experience by installing Aero Glass, using a privacy-control tool such as ShutUp10, and installing the Microsoft tool to hide updates. You can get a bit closer to what we currently enjoy by getting Windows 10 Pro, which will give you additional options for controlling the telemetry (privacy), but IIRC it won't give you much in the way of added control over Windows Updates. If (2) above, then you can stay on Win7 and set up a digital fortress with multiple layers of security such as discussed here, here, here, and here. If and when Win7 becomes untenable for whatever reason (security, technology), then you can consider switching to Linux or another non-Microsoft OS. My plan is #2. Hope this helps. --JorgeA I hate to admit it I am enjoying my Linux system there seems to be a solution to every problem, however, I still enjoy my Windows 7 system. If you think it you can make it happen in Linux! (not always an ideal soulution)
  16. --JorgeA After using W10 in a real world situation I want no parts of that especially with an older computer. The computer I worked on came out with W7 and ran fine up until the upgrade (it was a bit sluggish but there was a lot of junk and it looked like no one ever attempted to clean the system ever, but that is to be expected) The first thing I had issues with was if you clicked anything on the task bar everything froze up and would not respond also at that point shortcut keys no longer seemed to be working. Then the response time was bad with explorer the window would popup and for lack of a better description lag for a good bit.
  17. update on previous post: Managed to get 10 working found out the Windows.old was gone but I was able to use the recovery media creator to make W7 recovery media and restore the laptop to its former glory!
  18. It kinda figures, doesn't it. I'd be curious to know what made them realize Win10 was a bad idea. Best of luck to them getting back to Win7. --JorgeA I got all their files back at the very least. the Win 7 recovery partition still works is still in existence so I will attempt to do something with that ultimately probably wont work. I wonder if I can get 10 to boot if I can launch the recovery disk maker?
  19. I get my first real taste of Windows 10 tonight. Someone installed W10 thinking it would speed up the computer and then relised that it was a bad idea after the fact. Attempted to revert to 7 him self and now nether system will boot.
  20. My first experience with the no-DVD policy was in 2008 when I bought my first Vista PC (a Hewlett-Packard model). Even in my technologically-challenged condition back then, I remember my first reaction being, "What?! I can't believe how cheap they're getting!", and my second reaction being, "Hey, what if the hard drive crashes? That partition thing's gonna be useless!" As part of my purchase, the store made recovery disks for me, but in the back of my head I always wondered about all those people out there who wouldn't know to make them, or would never get around to doing it. It seemed a needless risk to make this an extra step. --JorgeA I liked the recovery boot at first, however, that was only because I had never gotten any form of recovery media with any of my other computers I had bought. I learned quickly (after I laptop took a tumble down a flight of stairs) that I needed to make my own backups. Also I have noticed a lot of the recovery partitions fail to work when you boot off them, but I was able to make DVD media off of them and that worked no problem. anyone else experience that?
  21. I would still like to play around with Windows 98, but running it in a VM is not the same thing. When I get a chance I will install React OS on that old laptop and do some real testing.
  22. Yep that virtual box. I have not done much with React OS yet so far I have just booted the live CD image to see what it was all about (vinifera mentioned it in a post in another topic). It looks very promising if I had not been looking so close I would have thought it was windows lol. I have plans to attempt to install it on an old XP era laptop I just need to get a hard drive or set it up on a flash drive if that is supported.
  23. Since the end is near (at least according to Microsoft) for Windows Vista, 7, & 8.0 system I decided to setup a Linux system to mess around with so that I am not jumping into the deep end of the pool if I ever decided to leave Windows. I selected Fedora OS x64 Mate Spin. Some extremely basic info about the computer: 2 monitors (One for the Linux Desktop and the 2ed for a Windows VM) 16GB Ram 4gb nvidia graphics card CD/DVD Read/Write 2TB Hard drive Software Installed: All the default Linux software packages (LibreOffice, claw mail, Firefox the usual) Wine - to allow me to run small windows programs Virtual Box - Run a Windows VM so I can watch Hulu it's a HAL issue VM Ware player - Broken at the moment Samba - Connect to windows share Not much, but if fits my needs. Any thoughts opinions any potential enhancements post below.
  24. I remember when you could choose classic theme! The Windows 8/10 primary theme hurts my eyes I have lots of trouble reading the screen. I have installed Classic Shell and Bigmuscle's Areo glass it helped make the system look more like 7.
  25. I hope so! I think the Linux communities would be outraged I certainly would be.
