OT. Last Vista one was probably based on Chrome 85, if I'm not mistaken. XP, most likely from 2016.5 points

The last update of the GoodbyeAds-YouTube-AdBlock-Filter filter list seems to be performed 4 months ago. So, for me, not that old at the moment. However, if no more updates are rolled out, I will unfortunately have to remove this list from my mod uBlock Origin Legacy. PS: Not every list is maintained on a regular base. There are many lists maintained by only one person or updated when time is available. So, users have to be patient, unfortunately. But you can disable such a list at any time if you think, it has become obsolete.5 points

I had the exact same problem on WinXP SP3. I installed the "Segoe UI" fonts from Win10. Problem solved!3 points

Strange, it doesn't mention whether these fixes were applied. https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2024/04/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_24.html3 points

They say you need to launch from a specially created icon (shortcut), did you do that? https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/issues/531#issue-22759904423 points

I'm not up to arguing (especially when there's no need to). "Microsoft ends Windows 7 security updates | TechCrunch" Windows 7 is a legacy OS. https://techcrunch.com/2023/01/10/microsoft-ends-windows-7-security-updates/3 points

It's a pity, I kinda hoped for a faster Ungoogling process. What exactly was Ungoogled, then?2 points

I am very satisfied with the efficiency of uBlock Origin Legacy when it comes to filtering and blocking unwanted content. Especially when you consider how old the original extension actually is. However, the decisive factor is the correct configuration and sensible selection of effective filter lists that are still compatible with uBlock Origin Legacy. And of course, the filters and rules you create yourself are also crucial, as they make everything even more interesting and effective. If the user proceeds in this way, then the combination of BPCF filter list and user script is the icing on the cake.2 points

I think you posted in the wrong thread. This is about @roytam1's browsers and not Supermium. There are no Chrome processes here, fortunately.1 point

Works for me, though drops frames in XP, as do earlier versions. Works fine on Vista+ (decent HW, e.g. browsers like 360Chrome & Mypal don't drop frames).1 point

Thank you, Rob, very much appreciate your insight. Hmmm ... "dark passenger" ... Interesting perspective on this disease when 'help' seems out of reach, good to lift the spirit I think. I always took offense when people would casually say to "cheer up" - rather perk up or lift the spirit is needed and sounds better to the soul. Wishing you well also I hope you will always keep this strength to guide you as nobody would chose such misery upon ourselves. My friend ... we have already pulled off the seemingly impossible and are here to tell about it, others have fallen victim to the daemons and left us <- Not meaning daemons as in religion. You get me though! Thank you again. That being said: I will be taking a very long break from the internet to recover. Must save all energy to focus on self preservation during the next several months and pull life together. MSFN has become a large part of my life but sometime we need breaks - healthy breaks from family as I consider people have like family. When I do return I'll likely have moved to Linux by then so we'll see, I guess. Be well everyone Sincerely Yours Salvatore1 point

Yeah, we have 24H2 Iot Ent LTSC 26100.268 on 3 workstations for testing and I agree that it's the only thing fit to use. Same was true on Win 10 and LTSC on it. We still run Open Shell Classic Explorer, but only for the network share icon. Maybe someday SAB will have that option in the Explorer section. Hint - hint. Jim1 point

Supermium is the same as usual Chrome, but with tweaks to make it work on old OS. GDI rendering instead of Dwrite for XP, rewritten memory functioning. Supermium understands Chrome flags. Some flags added, some removed. All of the usual connections to Google servers are present.1 point

See what it looks like if you use the scaling switches I'm using. /high-dpi-support=1 /force-device-scale-factor=1 That fixed a lot of font issues for me.1 point

VERY IMPRESSED so far !!! Even in a single-core VirtualBox VM running XP x86 SP3. "Ungoogled" is still not fully ungoogled - there should be no "1 app (Web Store)" in a fully ungoogled variation.1 point

A new public release of Supermium by win32 showed up a few hours ago, still on the M122 Chromium core: https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/releases/tag/v122-r4 As always, read first very well all the associated Release Notes and finer details ... FWIW, take note of: https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/issues/531 that is, if you're gonna use the provided installer to perform an "on-top update" (update a previous Sm installation), better reboot your OS before doing so (registry-entries related issue ...).1 point

True that - but I prefer sp52 to pm. My rule is: for work related websites (unless unnecessarily scripted) sp2, for social mypal68. For sites that don't work in those two, supermium, or else tablet or linux mint laptop.1 point

Sometimes when I'm trying to keep my dark passenger from presenting, I watch weird stuff, like the end of Secretariat. Something about that horse just lifts my spirits. To dig deep and find something inside, to pull off the seemingly impossible.1 point

Oh, just found this! It's indeed Google tracking. Someone even asked ChatGPT. "The sca_esv parameter is a piece of data in the URL that's likely internal to Google's system for tracking, sorting, or customizing search results. URL parameters like these are often used for various purposes including analytics, session identification, and to tweak the behaviour of the search. " "Asking ChatGPT to brainstorm what sca and esv could stand for in the context of a Google search:" https://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/172215/google-videos-search-sca-esv-query-parameter-possible-tracking1 point

But Firefox and all the forks (to this date) are one of the most notorious trackers, and they are nowhere near Ungoogled. So it just confirms my worries.1 point

Saying they don't, in any perceptible way, would be a waste of breath, wouldn't it? Right! And the reason is crystal clear. On my machine, they definitely do. Otherwise, I wouldn't write something like that. Besides that, I don't like connections that have not been authorised by me.1 point

On my weak machine, these unnecessary connections do have an impact to my CPU and are counterproductive for smoother browsing. So, I am glad to have got rid of them.1 point

Usually, I do not use any Chrome or Chromium browsers under Windows XP. My daily drivers under Windows XP are New Moon 28, Mypal 68 and Serpent 52. And there is no such behaviour.1 point

As I already mentioned in my Antimalware thread, Windows 10 Firewall Control is great and is doing a perfect job in controlling all system and application connections like, for example, Thorium.1 point

I was going to suggest that one also but it's not in v114 and I cannot access Thorium or Supermium at work. Yep! This one did the trick. No more entries in my firewall log. I just found this by accident, and its description made me prick up my ears:1 point

As a technically interested person and die-hard Windows XP Professional 32-bit enthusiast , I installed Thorium on my very old and very weak computer for testing purposes only. My hardware and OS specs are: Windows XP Professional SP3 with all updates after SP3 and additionally all POSReady updates, an Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.80 GHz CPU (single core, 32 Bit), 1.5 GB SD-RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 graphic card. I am using the version Thorium_SSE2_122.0.6261.168_WINXP_x32 in portable mode. Nothing has been installed to avoid any compromising of my system. It was hard to adjust the browser settings and flags to load pages as it actually should be. I am using the extension uBlock Origin as I do in all my browsers to filter and block all crap. However, uBlock Origin had to be exactly adjusted to not interfere negatively the loading of websites. I will test Thorium for a while to see how it behaves on my very weak Windows XP computer. But in any case, I am also interested in experiences from other users with Thorium on old 32-bit computers.1 point
-
You should use the version Thorium_SSE3_122.0.6261.168_WINXP_x32.zip as your CPU supports the SSE3 instruction set at maximum. You can use the SSE2 version, too but I would try the SSE3 one first.1 point

Just a small hint. If you are using my mod uBlock Origin Legacy 1.16.4.35 with the filter list Bypass Paywalls Clean filters enabled, you can additionally install the corresponding userscript Bypass Paywalls Clean. Some fixes require this userscript to make them work. You can download this script here. There are also language-specific userscripts which can be installed additionally to the English one. For the installation of the userscript(s), you must first install an userscript manager like, for example, Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey if you have not yet done so. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

I don't think that filters, which are considered by uBO invalid, will properly do their job anyway. That is probably clear to everyone. I am not fully convinced that these values are really meaningful. The filter engine is very old, and the modern filter lists contain more and more syntax which presumably can't be executed successfully by it.1 point
