I would also like to try version 16.26, but it is no longer available for download.3 points

Telegram Discloses Names, Phone Numbers, IP Addresses and other available personal data of its users. As we know, the supposedly private messenger - Russian Telegram demands users to give up their phone numbers, and here's the result when millions foolishly trust such companies. "in India, where there are more than 100 million Telegram users, the company in November provided the Delhi High Court with the names, phone numbers, and IP addresses of users "accused of illegally sharing a teachers’ copyrighted course" materials on the platform." All social media and large platforms do this. You either choose to accept that this happens or you don't use the service. There's no point in trying to form teams for or against any particular service or program.2 points

Agree! And the timing they chose is obviously due to the known political reasons, which I'm not going to discuss, to quit spreading news to a wide range of people without accounts. I think they are compromised and need to be closely watched and investigated by the NSA. Looks like only one direction since 1992.2 points

Hello, recently I started working on modifying DWM to customize Windows to my tastes, and this is what I've managed to get so far: I implemented all of this using Windhawk, but I might eventually move it all into its own program. The code is definitely not ready for release (buggy), plus it's still missing a few things that I'd like for an initial release. The blur implementation is also not the best, and I'd rather do it in a way closer to BigMuscle's, since this is based on Valinet's method, which considering was just quickly created to prove that blur is possible in 2004+, has its fair share issues. This can be seen as a proof of concept in a way, maybe a tech demo. For the buttons, I decided to rewrite both the functions that handle their positions and sizes in DWM, which gives me full control over the implementation. For example, I can modify this mod to make the buttons look the way they do in the Basic theme, Luna theme, even Classic theme, theoretically, all in DWM, meaning that there should be no compatibility issues with applications. You may have also noticed that the text is missing from the titlebars. That's due to the fact that in Windows 8.1 and 10, the titlebar text is rendered using GDI, and I'm still not sure how to make the background transparent (I've tried using SetBkMode but it didn't seem to do anything). I'll probably end up trying to render the text the same way Windows 7 does, as that's the OS whose look I'm trying to match. As for a release, I'm not sure when this will be ready. Could be this year, could be next year, it really depends on how much time I have on my hands, especially considering the project's current primitive state.1 point

Within the last few months we have seen the biggest decrease and corporate self destruction I at least have ever seen. Reddit and Twitter, both competing to see who can destroy their platform the fastest! Kinda makes me think after this that even after how advertisers are leaving both platforms, and especially how Microsoft has stopped making major posts (mostly Mojang), brings up the interesting thought that smaller more focused content forums like MSFN and other ones like Planet Minecraft and TenForums may actually grow in popularity once more, especially with Reddit now having upset their user base to no end. Really unfortunate. Now a good amount of my google term + Reddit searches won't be as useful anymore. Really unfortunate though because you can't really tell if the news you are reading is even real or not. Guess everyones back to the smaller places again. The internet honestly, has never felt more emptier to me. I've stopped using Twitter, Reddit, Instagram and Snapchat. Probably for the best, though. I still communicate on Discord. Truly hilarious.1 point

The importance Reddit had though was that it was the most “real human” you could get at times. Rather than the paywalled blog posts and heavily biased news outlets, you could gather a bunch of information from other people out there if you were trying to make a decision for yourself. Not only that, it was a fairly decent place for focused communities as well. But their ignorance especially to the moderators who do their work for free and the visually disabled who need the third party tools to use the platform really shows they too fell to viewing their platform as a “social media” when it really is still better off as a forum network. People abandoned Facebook quite fast because even the illiterate know it’s a privacy nightmare. Plus the whole image that your grandparents use it drove a lot of the younger generation away. This could also be said for issues countries encounter but that can get too political for here. The companies are quite interesting with how they can be so misled and completely out of the know from what their community wants. What ever happened to customer feedback? Valve is an example of a company that manages well. The layout is nearly identical to an open source repository and everyone just does whatever they want. The company is private and isn’t made to make every penny possible. Their support team is fantastic on steam and their support of Linux is even better. This is an example of what happens when you don’t have $$$$ shoved into your eyes. You can actually do something great and not be greedy.1 point

The primary mistake of those large platforms was that they wanted to get everyone onto there, and didn't understand how people on the internet are. You can't have a platform for everyone, especially not everyone in the world. There are too many disagreements and too much funstering that exists to make it viable.1 point

Looked in which updates updated files DX, they have been replaced several times, so the list is about this: KB4503269, KB4530692, KB4539602. Maybe some more, but it is difficult to find individually, so the last cumulative KB4534310 has it all. But in addition to preparing the game developers, users must also make preparations, install system updates that add support, as well as video card drivers, so that there is support. Although 970 is so old, but it already fully supports DX12 mode (12_0), so in Win10 you can play all games with DX12 support on it. And Cyberpunk 2077 only works in DX12 mode, no other lower versions are provided there, as stated in their message. Yes, then the necessary update is already there, no newer ones are needed. The video driver must be newer than February 2019, at which time support was added. So if the game still does not work, then apparently they added something else that does not allow it to work properly. And also try dxvk, maybe through it will be able to get the image.1 point

Another interesting subject - "Attorneys Investigating Elon Musk Over U.S. Citizenship". "I'll be making a FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] request for his immigration application," he continued. "If he lied anywhere on application we will move to strip him of US citizenship. Stay tuned." Obeidallah said in a follow-up tweet: "Just so everyone knows the facts, while I did make a FOIA request for Elon Musk's immigration application he has to consent to the request before I can get the docs. If he consents, I will share the file. If he refuses to consent then we must ask: What is Elon hiding?!" "As a lawyer Im going to do research to see if @elonmusk in any way lied on his application for US citizenship. I'll be making a FOIA request for his immigration application. I would never advise anyone to buy a licence (note UK spelling please, your spelling is American English) for Norton. But I would always recommend Malwarebytes Premium, whose licence could be used in newer operating systems without problems, if necessary.1 point

The term "disenfranchisement of the user" cannot be used often enough with regard to Norton. I have used Norton Antivirus several times in the now more than 20 years of Windows XP experience. Again and again, files were deleted and actions were carried out that were not authorised by me. Norton Antivirus is simply the very worst. And by the way, I am someone who always makes up my own mind and articulates it. People who only repeat what others say make me want to puke.1 point

My internal "AstroSkipper" list is about 70 security related items that I am trying to work through. The only limiting factor is the time available as I already mentioned here: And it is of course a Windows XP list and nothing else. And there are and will be definitely well-known security programs that I personally dislike such as Avast. And just because you don't know Look 'n' Stop Firewall, such generalised statements are rather subjective and do not correspond to the facts. There are or were enough Windows XP users who appreciate or appreciated this firewall. So, you are unfortunately wrong. And just a reminder, my thread is about antimalware, firewall, and other security programs for Windows XP and therefore considerably different from this one here. BTW, there is no real objectivity in human action and thought. To think that one is truly free from subjective influences is naïve and doomed to failure. And of course you are free to post wherever you want. And the same applies to me, of course.1 point

I found an offline installer for Kaspersky Free 19. No official link but a link to a file hoster. I am not sure if I am allowed to post it here. On the official Kaspersky servers, the folder KFA19 has been deleted. This version does not exist there anymore. The folder KFA18 still exists, though. That's probably why the online installer of KFA19 can't load its necessary files. And TBH, that was of course foreseeable.1 point

Yep, unfortunately! Unpredictable and unauthorised actions every now and then! Basically, avast! 2018 is a good protection program. I used avast! Premier in my system for years. But there were several reasons to switch to other programs. You can read more about that in this post: You should definitely reinstall avast! 2018 at regular intervals if you want to use this program in your system I personally no longer use avast! 2018. My protection program has been Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522 for some time, and I am satisfied with it. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

Hello @SC7601! That's correct! I would be very pleased if I got feedback from users who can test my program package in a real installation (no VM) of Windows XP on a period-correct hardware. BTW, my Windows XP computer is equipped with a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Northwood single core CPU and only 1.5 GB SD-RAM. No SSD, no SATA but IDE hard disks, and the graphic card is NVIDIA 6200 AGP 4x. You see, we both are running Windows XP on a Pentium 4. You do not need to use old Chrome browsers. In the MSFN forum, we have a lot of browsers compatible with Windows XP and quite recent to surf the web nowadays. Here is the link to the post of my program package: And here is the link to the forum with topics referring to browsers in Windows XP: https://msfn.org/board/forum/201-browsers-working-on-older-nt-family-oses/ If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me! Many thanks for testing! (... but sorry for the negative result on XP ; would it even install at all?) ? I kind of lost you there When I visit https://www.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus I now get offered the same product as when visiting page: https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus (this wasn't the case some weeks ago...) Both DOWNLOAD NOW buttons (red in the first URL, green in the second one) offer the same free product, labelled Kaspersky Security Cloud – Free (not KFA 2020, not SAAS), one ends up downloading a stub installer named ks3.020.0.14.1085aen_18801.exe Some localised Kaspersky sub-sites, e.g. the UK (and Greek) one, haven't yet updated, so on https://www.kaspersky.co.uk/free-antivirus you are still being offered Kaspersky Free (Antivirus), this is KFA2019 (19.0.0.1088aben, includes patches a+b, en-GB GUI), the stub installer downloaded is named just startup_14833.exe Where have you accessed KFA2020 ? ... and about SAAS; do you mean SaaS (Security as a Service) ? Which other free Kaspersky product is that? Thanks for any elaboration... In practice, mostly true, with two exceptions: 1. installing: Though hidden by Kaspersky Labs, one might find off-line installers, too (both official and RePacks); e.g. the link for KFA2018 provided by @pcalvert yields an off-line (full) installer. 2. activating: You only need activate (probably) once a year - I can't seem to find literature on off-line activation (was possible with older Kaspersky products, which used key files; might be still possible by using third party tools like KRT Club). 3. updating: See my post here for a way to update KAF2018/KAF2019 off-line Best regards1 point

If you have access to a Win7+ computer, then consider installing KAF19 (Kaspersky AntiVirus Free) on your off-line XP machines ( as suggested by @BTTB ) and then use latest Kaspersky Update Utility on the on-line Win7+ machine to download latest KAF19 definitions: The "def" files can be then transferred to the XP machines via, e.g., a USB flash stick and then installed via a process probably detailed in the Kaspersky Support Site (or just Google/Bing/DDG for it ). EDIT: Support link => https://support.kaspersky.com/11705 Unfortunately, latest KUU v3.2.0.153 is build on Qt 5.8 framework, which requires Win7+ (thus, I can't test it here on Vista... ). EDIT2: Last XP+Vista compatible version of KUU is v3.1.0.25 (built on Qt 4.6); official download link (retrieved via web.archive.org ): updateutility_win_3.1.0.25_release_en.zip Once run for the first time, start an update to populate the "Applications" list with latest KAF entries...1 point

Well, false sense of security is overrated too and really hazardous on XP. Without a serious AV on XP environment your ease is as shaky as your Chrome browser stucked in 49 version. It's well known the most of dangers come from browser and insecure firewall like XP Firewall. So the only thing you can do to secure an old browser (without security updates) is installing an AV like Kaspersky (Free) that integrates itself in the browser to prevent malware exploit on security leak unpatched by the unwilling gg boys. edit: OInly for experts don't worry.. you can also use Commodore 64 to surf the web in total security.1 point

Avast supports XP and is probably the most complete antivirus with streaming updates (definitions are updated in real time), a firewall, a custom browser based on chromium that allows you to do internet banking and others "risky" things safely on XP thanks to the extra security layer, SecureLine (which allows you to use a VPN service - not in the free version, though -), a ransomware shield that protects all your file system resources from being accessed by untrusted third part applications, Secure DNS which allows you to use other DNS and access websites that are blocked in your country, a SandBox which allows you to load risky executables in a virtual environment, without the risk of infecting your real system, a Wifi inspector which tells you whether the wifi you are connected to is secure or not, a software updater which tells you which software needs to be updated and can, eventually, update it for you in background, a rescue disk which allows you to create a Disk or a USB with Avast Antivirus in it to clean up other computers (or your own computer) if it doesn't boot, a boot-time scan that allows you to scan for viruses before Windows starts in order to remove even the nastier threats, a mode to save all your password into a master password that encrypts them all and handle them for you (still in beta in XP, though), an email antivirus and antispam, a data shredder that allows you to permanently destroy files by writing random data in the cells of the files you want to permanently delete and finally a sensitive data shield which enables you to protect and encrypt your personal documents and prevent third part applications from accessing them. In other word, Avast is my way to go. I have Avast Premier in my pc and I'm a beta tester.1 point
