I would also like to try version 16.26, but it is no longer available for download.3 points

Telegram Discloses Names, Phone Numbers, IP Addresses and other available personal data of its users. As we know, the supposedly private messenger - Russian Telegram demands users to give up their phone numbers, and here's the result when millions foolishly trust such companies. "in India, where there are more than 100 million Telegram users, the company in November provided the Delhi High Court with the names, phone numbers, and IP addresses of users "accused of illegally sharing a teachers’ copyrighted course" materials on the platform." All social media and large platforms do this. You either choose to accept that this happens or you don't use the service. There's no point in trying to form teams for or against any particular service or program.2 points

Agree! And the timing they chose is obviously due to the known political reasons, which I'm not going to discuss, to quit spreading news to a wide range of people without accounts. I think they are compromised and need to be closely watched and investigated by the NSA. Looks like only one direction since 1992.2 points

Hello, recently I started working on modifying DWM to customize Windows to my tastes, and this is what I've managed to get so far: I implemented all of this using Windhawk, but I might eventually move it all into its own program. The code is definitely not ready for release (buggy), plus it's still missing a few things that I'd like for an initial release. The blur implementation is also not the best, and I'd rather do it in a way closer to BigMuscle's, since this is based on Valinet's method, which considering was just quickly created to prove that blur is possible in 2004+, has its fair share issues. This can be seen as a proof of concept in a way, maybe a tech demo. For the buttons, I decided to rewrite both the functions that handle their positions and sizes in DWM, which gives me full control over the implementation. For example, I can modify this mod to make the buttons look the way they do in the Basic theme, Luna theme, even Classic theme, theoretically, all in DWM, meaning that there should be no compatibility issues with applications. You may have also noticed that the text is missing from the titlebars. That's due to the fact that in Windows 8.1 and 10, the titlebar text is rendered using GDI, and I'm still not sure how to make the background transparent (I've tried using SetBkMode but it didn't seem to do anything). I'll probably end up trying to render the text the same way Windows 7 does, as that's the OS whose look I'm trying to match. As for a release, I'm not sure when this will be ready. Could be this year, could be next year, it really depends on how much time I have on my hands, especially considering the project's current primitive state.1 point

Hello @Andalu! I'm afraid I do not have a frame of reference. I've never had a Facebook account, never had a Twitter account, never had a Reddit account, never had an Instagram account. NOT being on the platforms probably gives one a better view of them "from the outside". They are biased and maybe one does not see that bias "from the inside". I am not a Musk fan. But I don't mind a few eggs getting broken in the path of reforming "free speech" - which should never be reduced to "getting your voice out" while squashing/banning/censoring all opposing views from seeing the light of day.1 point
-
Two sides to every coin. Not everyone views what is happening to Reddit and Twitter as corporate self destruction but rather a course-correction, a righting of the ship. To make an omellete, you have to break some eggs. That's life in the USA, a gigantic pendulum swing of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum", extreme policy swings and spending way too much time at both of the extremes and not enough time in the middle. A very divisive country where fighters fight it out and never return to their corners when the bell rings - an all-out no-holds-barred duke-fest without the Daisy Dukes.1 point

That's why I wrote "AstroSkipper provides with top-notch security software only, don't forget to read his other very useful threads!" Is it light on the CPU in your XP machine? No additional load? I'm just afraid my old celeron (1core) wouldn't like the additional load. Forgot to tell, it's a laptop.1 point

It's again off-topic and has no relation to the German Mastodon and/or Twitter, which is the topic here. I'm asking you once again, please stop off-topic, don't derail the thread. Thnx1 point

Looked in which updates updated files DX, they have been replaced several times, so the list is about this: KB4503269, KB4530692, KB4539602. Maybe some more, but it is difficult to find individually, so the last cumulative KB4534310 has it all. But in addition to preparing the game developers, users must also make preparations, install system updates that add support, as well as video card drivers, so that there is support. Although 970 is so old, but it already fully supports DX12 mode (12_0), so in Win10 you can play all games with DX12 support on it. And Cyberpunk 2077 only works in DX12 mode, no other lower versions are provided there, as stated in their message. Yes, then the necessary update is already there, no newer ones are needed. The video driver must be newer than February 2019, at which time support was added. So if the game still does not work, then apparently they added something else that does not allow it to work properly. And also try dxvk, maybe through it will be able to get the image.1 point

On that PC, I'm updated to the level of January 2020. Not sure if I want to go higher. Veodeocard is with 6GB of VRAM, looks like it's enough. Drivers are old, but they don't make them for Windows 7 anymore. I would like to add, i run RDR2 perfectly fine, no freezes. So the card is fine.1 point

DISCLAIMER: It has nothing to do with "racism", I'm just not comfortable sharing any of my personal information with a foreign national, who may or may not be compromised, that's my own choice of course. In the meantime, I'm fine sharing that very limited amount of my personal information they ask (only email!), with the German Mastodon Social Network! Keep your info in safe hands!1 point

I imagine the browser without own mitigations won't appear vulnerable on a newer CPU while it may appear so on the older CPU. And just how effective are these software mitigations? https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=25059 I run an OS from 2020 and still vulnerable. Maybe the issue is that the OS was released during COVID-19 pandemic (pun-intended)? Or there are tricks that the small team (Moonchild Productions) simply isn't aware of, given that it doesn't happen in either Firefox or Edge and there could be a combination of OS level and browser level mitigations behind the scenes. But then again, I always got the impression that the only real fix is a new CPU as far as those particular vulnerabilities go.1 point

Even though I have a clear and incontrovertible opinion of Norton, there may well be others who prefer software that makes every decision for them. All I can say is: to each their own! And of course the population is larger in the USA (than in the UK), but the English language was only imported. It originated somewhere else. But honestly, I mix British and American English very often, rather unconsciously. Don't forget, I am not a native English speaker, either!1 point

To everyone: First of all, everything AstroSkipper says - you're demanded to have no doubts about it! Don't you dare to think otherwise. To the the wise scholar AstroSkipper: The bloody "free" Norton's licence-burden came on the CD disk with my Siemens PC, and I had the same terrible experience. I would never advise anyone to buy a licence from them also, of course. To everyone, again: Norton is on the same level of terrible experience along with Kaspersky. Kaspersky even dared to find a "virus" in the famous MKVToolNix programme by the famous German author Mosu - Moritz Bunkus. For those who are in bed with Kaspersky, confirmed by Kaspersky itself: the original setup.exe was a false positive. (of course!): https://mkvtoolnix.download/allegedly-backdoor-in-windows-installer-v2-4-1.html 1 - His spelling is indeed considered correct in the the whole World (minus one country), not only in the UK. 2 - Yes, read the above, it was not "effective". Never was, never will be. Yes, I don't wanna hear about it ever again, I think AstroSkipper agrees with me.1 point

Right! And well done! Security products from Norton or Symantec or whatever they are called today are rather a disenfranchisement of the user, who is not allowed to decide for himself what should be deleted and what not, because the user is probably considered incapable. I see it a little differently. I wouldn't spend a single cent on Norton Antivirus, as I said before. But in general, you can certainly buy licences to use them in Windows XP. A licence of Malwarebytes Premium for example can still be used in a current version for a newer operating system in the event that the virus definitions are discontinued in Windows XP or Vista. Fortunately, I have a lifetime licence and can use it in a more recent version of Malwarebytes Premium at any time.1 point

Hello @SC7601! That's correct! I would be very pleased if I got feedback from users who can test my program package in a real installation (no VM) of Windows XP on a period-correct hardware. BTW, my Windows XP computer is equipped with a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Northwood single core CPU and only 1.5 GB SD-RAM. No SSD, no SATA but IDE hard disks, and the graphic card is NVIDIA 6200 AGP 4x. You see, we both are running Windows XP on a Pentium 4. You do not need to use old Chrome browsers. In the MSFN forum, we have a lot of browsers compatible with Windows XP and quite recent to surf the web nowadays. Here is the link to the post of my program package: And here is the link to the forum with topics referring to browsers in Windows XP: https://msfn.org/board/forum/201-browsers-working-on-older-nt-family-oses/ If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me! ... Maybe not officially, but it has already been reported as running fine there: KFA2019 = v19.0.0.1088 As pointed out already, both KFA2018 & KFA2019 require .NET FW 4.0 on XP... FWIW, there isn't going to be a KFA2020 version, the free product has been rebranded as "Kaspersky Security Cloud - Free" recently: https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/thank-you/try-free-cloud-antivirus It also doesn't support XP officially; any brave person here with a curiosity to test it on XP?1 point

Panda free https://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/homeusers/solutions/free-antivirus/ Compatible with: Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP (SP3 or later) I have been using for a while on my other computer Win 7 pro 64bits and it seems to be pretty good. On XP I have been using an older version of Avast 12.3.2280. Today I asked Avast forum "Will the last stable version of Avast that supports WinXP be available to download from avast forum/site after January 2019 ?" MartinZ responded "yes, it will still be possible after Jan 2019 to download the online installer and install it on 17-year old Windows XP/Vista. It will install the version 18.x. If you use the same installer on Windows 10 it will install version 19.x. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.01 point

I have two desktop computers and one laptop all Running XP SP3. For the past 4 or 5 years, I have been running Kaspersky Anti Virus (Not the full suite of software) on all three. Kaspersky provides a license for up to 3 machines. I have not experienced any malware or other harmful activity on any of my machines. Kaspersky does fully support Windows XP SP3 and the only downside I ever experience is a slower bootup while loading the various processes. I also have installed malwarebytes (free) which I use to scan weekly and malwarebytes anti exploit (stand alone).1 point

I usually recommend Avast as well if someone wants real time scanning, and have used it myself before and like it. Avira i don't think is officially supported on XP but as of a couple months ago it still works and is okay too.1 point

Avast supports XP and is probably the most complete antivirus with streaming updates (definitions are updated in real time), a firewall, a custom browser based on chromium that allows you to do internet banking and others "risky" things safely on XP thanks to the extra security layer, SecureLine (which allows you to use a VPN service - not in the free version, though -), a ransomware shield that protects all your file system resources from being accessed by untrusted third part applications, Secure DNS which allows you to use other DNS and access websites that are blocked in your country, a SandBox which allows you to load risky executables in a virtual environment, without the risk of infecting your real system, a Wifi inspector which tells you whether the wifi you are connected to is secure or not, a software updater which tells you which software needs to be updated and can, eventually, update it for you in background, a rescue disk which allows you to create a Disk or a USB with Avast Antivirus in it to clean up other computers (or your own computer) if it doesn't boot, a boot-time scan that allows you to scan for viruses before Windows starts in order to remove even the nastier threats, a mode to save all your password into a master password that encrypts them all and handle them for you (still in beta in XP, though), an email antivirus and antispam, a data shredder that allows you to permanently destroy files by writing random data in the cells of the files you want to permanently delete and finally a sensitive data shield which enables you to protect and encrypt your personal documents and prevent third part applications from accessing them. In other word, Avast is my way to go. I have Avast Premier in my pc and I'm a beta tester.1 point
