Telegram Discloses Names, Phone Numbers, IP Addresses and other available personal data of its users. As we know, the supposedly private messenger - Russian Telegram demands users to give up their phone numbers, and here's the result when millions foolishly trust such companies. "in India, where there are more than 100 million Telegram users, the company in November provided the Delhi High Court with the names, phone numbers, and IP addresses of users "accused of illegally sharing a teachers’ copyrighted course" materials on the platform." Already only because of attempts to connect to IPs 95.101.114.48, 95.101.114.196, 23.220.255.25, 23.220.255.21, 23.59.69.139, 192.229.221.95, 104.18.15.101 and 104.18.14.101 performed by Process Explorer v16.32 when it started (and without any possibility of disabling them via a program option), I would discard such version. I would also like to try version 16.26, but it is no longer available for download.2 points

Agree! And the timing they chose is obviously due to the known political reasons, which I'm not going to discuss, to quit spreading news to a wide range of people without accounts. I think they are compromised and need to be closely watched and investigated by the NSA. Looks like only one direction since 1992.2 points

Hello, recently I started working on modifying DWM to customize Windows to my tastes, and this is what I've managed to get so far: I implemented all of this using Windhawk, but I might eventually move it all into its own program. The code is definitely not ready for release (buggy), plus it's still missing a few things that I'd like for an initial release. The blur implementation is also not the best, and I'd rather do it in a way closer to BigMuscle's, since this is based on Valinet's method, which considering was just quickly created to prove that blur is possible in 2004+, has its fair share issues. This can be seen as a proof of concept in a way, maybe a tech demo. For the buttons, I decided to rewrite both the functions that handle their positions and sizes in DWM, which gives me full control over the implementation. For example, I can modify this mod to make the buttons look the way they do in the Basic theme, Luna theme, even Classic theme, theoretically, all in DWM, meaning that there should be no compatibility issues with applications. You may have also noticed that the text is missing from the titlebars. That's due to the fact that in Windows 8.1 and 10, the titlebar text is rendered using GDI, and I'm still not sure how to make the background transparent (I've tried using SetBkMode but it didn't seem to do anything). I'll probably end up trying to render the text the same way Windows 7 does, as that's the OS whose look I'm trying to match. As for a release, I'm not sure when this will be ready. Could be this year, could be next year, it really depends on how much time I have on my hands, especially considering the project's current primitive state.1 point

I'm afraid I do not have a frame of reference. I've never had a Facebook account, never had a Twitter account, never had a Reddit account, never had an Instagram account. NOT being on the platforms probably gives one a better view of them "from the outside". They are biased and maybe one does not see that bias "from the inside". I am not a Musk fan. But I don't mind a few eggs getting broken in the path of reforming "free speech" - which should never be reduced to "getting your voice out" while squashing/banning/censoring all opposing views from seeing the light of day.1 point
-
Two sides to every coin. Not everyone views what is happening to Reddit and Twitter as corporate self destruction but rather a course-correction, a righting of the ship. To make an omellete, you have to break some eggs. That's life in the USA, a gigantic pendulum swing of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum", extreme policy swings and spending way too much time at both of the extremes and not enough time in the middle. A very divisive country where fighters fight it out and never return to their corners when the bell rings - an all-out no-holds-barred duke-fest without the Daisy Dukes.1 point

But then again, to me, VirtualBox is my biggest and most-used "security program". Run anything I want, without regard to crashes and holes, without regard to uninstall remnants left behind, without an internet connection to communicate anything whatsoever. Then delete the VM and revert to the base VM, clone it, and start all over again.1 point

On that PC, I'm updated to the level of January 2020. Not sure if I want to go higher. Veodeocard is with 6GB of VRAM, looks like it's enough. Drivers are old, but they don't make them for Windows 7 anymore. I would like to add, i run RDR2 perfectly fine, no freezes. So the card is fine.1 point

Another interesting subject - "Attorneys Investigating Elon Musk Over U.S. Citizenship". "I'll be making a FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] request for his immigration application," he continued. "If he lied anywhere on application we will move to strip him of US citizenship. Stay tuned." Obeidallah said in a follow-up tweet: "Just so everyone knows the facts, while I did make a FOIA request for Elon Musk's immigration application he has to consent to the request before I can get the docs. If he consents, I will share the file. If he refuses to consent then we must ask: What is Elon hiding?!" "As a lawyer Im going to do research to see if @elonmusk in any way lied on his application for US citizenship. I'll be making a FOIA request for his immigration application. If he lied anywhere on application we will move to strip him of US citizenship. Stay tuned." Even though I have a clear and incontrovertible opinion of Norton, there may well be others who prefer software that makes every decision for them. All I can say is: to each their own! And of course the population is larger in the USA (than in the UK), but the English language was only imported. It originated somewhere else. But honestly, I mix British and American English very often, rather unconsciously. Don't forget, I am not a native English speaker, either!1 point

To everyone: First of all, everything AstroSkipper says - you're demanded to have no doubts about it! Don't you dare to think otherwise. To the the wise scholar AstroSkipper: The bloody "free" Norton's licence-burden came on the CD disk with my Siemens PC, and I had the same terrible experience. I would never advise anyone to buy a licence from them also, of course. To everyone, again: Norton is on the same level of terrible experience along with Kaspersky. Kaspersky even dared to find a "virus" in the famous MKVToolNix programme by the famous German author Mosu - Moritz Bunkus. For those who are in bed with Kaspersky, confirmed by Kaspersky itself: the original setup.exe was a false positive. (of course!): https://mkvtoolnix.download/allegedly-backdoor-in-windows-installer-v2-4-1.html 1 - His spelling is indeed considered correct in the the whole World (minus one country), not only in the UK. 2 - Yes, read the above, it was not "effective". Never was, never will be. Yes, I don't wanna hear about it ever again, I think AstroSkipper agrees with me.1 point
-
I would never advise anyone to buy a licence (note UK spelling please, your spelling is American English) for Norton. But I would always recommend Malwarebytes Premium, whose licence could be used in newer operating systems without problems, if necessary.1 point

The term "disenfranchisement of the user" cannot be used often enough with regard to Norton. I have used Norton Antivirus several times in the now more than 20 years of Windows XP experience. Again and again, files were deleted and actions were carried out that were not authorised by me. Norton Antivirus is simply the very worst. And by the way, I am someone who always makes up my own mind and articulates it. People who only repeat what others say make me want to puke.1 point

My internal "AstroSkipper" list is about 70 security related items that I am trying to work through. The only limiting factor is the time available as I already mentioned here: And it is of course a Windows XP list and nothing else. And there are and will be definitely well-known security programs that I personally dislike such as Avast. And just because you don't know Look 'n' Stop Firewall, such generalised statements are rather subjective and do not correspond to the facts. There are or were enough Windows XP users who appreciate or appreciated this firewall. So, you are unfortunately wrong. And just a reminder, my thread is about antimalware, firewall, and other security programs for Windows XP and therefore considerably different from this one here. BTW, there is no real objectivity in human action and thought. To think that one is truly free from subjective influences is naĂŻve and doomed to failure. And of course you are free to post wherever you want. And the same applies to me, of course.1 point
-
Right! And well done! Security products from Norton or Symantec or whatever they are called today are rather a disenfranchisement of the user, who is not allowed to decide for himself what should be deleted and what not, because the user is probably considered incapable. I see it a little differently. I wouldn't spend a single cent on Norton Antivirus, as I said before. But in general, you can certainly buy licences to use them in Windows XP. A licence of Malwarebytes Premium for example can still be used in a current version for a newer operating system in the event that the virus definitions are discontinued in Windows XP or Vista. Fortunately, I have a lifetime licence and can use it in a more recent version of Malwarebytes Premium at any time.1 point

I found an offline installer for Kaspersky Free 19. No official link but a link to a file hoster. I am not sure if I am allowed to post it here. On the official Kaspersky servers, the folder KFA19 has been deleted. This version does not exist there anymore. The folder KFA18 still exists, though. That's probably why the online installer of KFA19 can't load its necessary files. And TBH, that was of course foreseeable.1 point

... Maybe not officially, but it has already been reported as running fine there: KFA2019 = v19.0.0.1088 As pointed out already, both KFA2018 & KFA2019 require .NET FW 4.0 on XP... FWIW, there isn't going to be a KFA2020 version, the free product has been rebranded as "Kaspersky Security Cloud - Free" recently: https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/thank-you/try-free-cloud-antivirus It also doesn't support XP officially; any brave person here with a curiosity to test it on XP?1 point

If you have access to a Win7+ computer, then consider installing KAF19 (Kaspersky AntiVirus Free) on your off-line XP machines ( as suggested by @BTTB ) and then use latest Kaspersky Update Utility on the on-line Win7+ machine to download latest KAF19 definitions: The "def" files can be then transferred to the XP machines via, e.g., a USB flash stick and then installed via a process probably detailed in the Kaspersky Support Site (or just Google/Bing/DDG for it ). EDIT: Support link => https://support.kaspersky.com/11705 Unfortunately, latest KUU v3.2.0.153 is build on Qt 5.8 framework, which requires Win7+ (thus, I can't test it here on Vista... ). EDIT2: Last XP+Vista compatible version of KUU is v3.1.0.25 (built on Qt 4.6); official download link (retrieved via web.archive.org ): updateutility_win_3.1.0.25_release_en.zip Once run for the first time, start an update to populate the "Applications" list with latest KAF entries...1 point

Panda free https://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/homeusers/solutions/free-antivirus/ Compatible with: Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP (SP3 or later) I have been using for a while on my other computer Win 7 pro 64bits and it seems to be pretty good. On XP I have been using an older version of Avast 12.3.2280. Today I asked Avast forum "Will the last stable version of Avast that supports WinXP be available to download from avast forum/site after January 2019 ?" MartinZ responded "yes, it will still be possible after Jan 2019 to download the online installer and install it on 17-year old Windows XP/Vista. It will install the version 18.x. If you use the same installer on Windows 10 it will install version 19.x. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.01 point

Well, false sense of security is overrated too and really hazardous on XP. Without a serious AV on XP environment your ease is as shaky as your Chrome browser stucked in 49 version. It's well known the most of dangers come from browser and insecure firewall like XP Firewall. So the only thing you can do to secure an old browser (without security updates) is installing an AV like Kaspersky (Free) that integrates itself in the browser to prevent malware exploit on security leak unpatched by the unwilling gg boys. edit: OInly for experts don't worry.. you can also use Commodore 64 to surf the web in total security.1 point

I have two desktop computers and one laptop all Running XP SP3. For the past 4 or 5 years, I have been running Kaspersky Anti Virus (Not the full suite of software) on all three. Kaspersky provides a license for up to 3 machines. I have not experienced any malware or other harmful activity on any of my machines. Kaspersky does fully support Windows XP SP3 and the only downside I ever experience is a slower bootup while loading the various processes. I also have installed malwarebytes (free) which I use to scan weekly and malwarebytes anti exploit (stand alone).1 point

I usually recommend Avast as well if someone wants real time scanning, and have used it myself before and like it. Avira i don't think is officially supported on XP but as of a couple months ago it still works and is okay too.1 point
