They don't really. People just eat whatever they want. The news articles make it seem like this maybe but it really isn't the case.3 points

It is just information warfare. The US wants the data to themselves. This isn't about data privacy or security or else they would be going after all the major platforms. Also all third party apps should be banned from government devices. I don't even know why that talking point comes up. Anyone who has worked in a legit enterprise environment knows that corporate systems are only allowed to use vetted programs.3 points

Twitter is actively trying to combat the large scraping operations that are evidently effecting Twitter's performance negatively. Or perhaps it is an IP situation. Either way, there are a large amount of websites (at least) in China and Taiwan that basically are just twitter aggregates. A lot of them shut down a couple months ago when the API changed but that only seemed to effect Japanese sites.3 points

I use a legit non-modified Vista x64 SP2, then install everything according to win32's instructions, no need to get as low as RTM! I never used a third party installer, can't say anything about it!2 points

Yes, glory, it's a glorious German Social Network, which of they are proud, it saves us when Twitter lets down and blocks our accounts, like yours, for example! Why the heck do you bring off-topic, political, virus discussions to a purely Social Network discussion? I could only guess, but looks like you want to start another fight! Democracy is not Democracy, when one brings software (Kaspersky) from an evil and hostile dictatorship! It's a national risk and a good case for the NSA! In the meantime, you can enjoy the glorious German Social Network, while being blocked by a foreign citizen, who now owns the American Twitter, the result of Democracy.2 points

You evidently misunderstood me, I wasn't talking of your post, which is just pointing to some info, it is that recommendation from that Italian agency that could have well been written by Chat GPT, this way the good guys that protect our infrastructure could have had more free time to do the whatever they are doing. jaclaz2 points

It might be long gone now or blocked, they demand a "special checking procedure"! It includes more if your personal data to be collected, and another check for your phone/location, also a payment and a "verification", so I refused.2 points

When I see some interesting hobby projects on github, it is fun to try and build a Windows XP compatible version from the sources. Preferably by building on Windows XP itself. For that one needs a somewhat recent version of CMake. https://cmake.org/ Official CMAKE packages dropped windows XP compatibility after this one: cmake-3.13.5-win32-x86.zip from 2019-05-14, last in 3.13 serie. ReactOS Build Environment package RosBE-2.2.1.exe includes an XP compatible CMake: cmake-3.17.2 (without GUI) By comparing and selecting MSYS2 packages, I assembled an XP compatible version of CMake v3.20 (08-07-2021). Available on my website in the back-ports section. http://www.gb-homepage.nl/index.htm2 points

MSFN users would be pleased to know the German Mastodon Social network works with a wide range of old browsers! Due to the fact of much less bloat!2 points

I read rumours the new Facebook offspring company will also want ones phone number, which is a no go for me. addon I'll stay with Mastodon Social for now. I'm sure they have a long way with good stuff ahead.2 points

... I trust you'll find the article below quite enlightening : https://whatsoftware.com/edit-files-inside-firefox-4-omni-jar-to-auto-save-password/ ... specifically this part: Later additions: 1. Much has been written about the potential dangers of TikTok, a popular app made by a Chinese company. Here’s a link to a Popular Science article that tries to be balanced: https://www.popsci.com/technology/tiktok-ultimatum-ban-us-uk/1 point

So.. how's it going everyone here at our great forum?? Sometimes, when we're short on words, all we can come up with is 1 word to pretty much sum up how we're feeling. Let us try to keep this positive and not let it too negative (even if, indeed you do feel completely "Sh!tty"), let us avoid going downhill too far), only because, I'm hoping to promote positivity and hope when times are rough and people have a lot to deal with - especially around the holidays; as if they aren't already stressful enough, this one will be difficult for many of us. Besides.. it nice to know you're not along out there, and the forum is another way to stay connected to one-another. Ok.. I'll start.. (cautiously) Optimistic1 point

jaclaz, do you always treat official government warnings, published at official government websites as "some info", apart from their rather simple writing style, which you evidently didn't like? Or only in such rather limited cases that affect this specific software, namely Kaspersky? Please bare in mind, it's just a simple question, out of curiosity, nothing else! And I'll be perfectly fine, if it wil be unanswered. Thank you! If you want my opinion in advance, as well as the opinions of other millions of people that listen to their government, I think it's a very serious warning, despite the primitive language, and here I agree with you!1 point
-
I too don't understand why he is so strangely and annoyingly promotes Kaspersky virus in each and every topic, even here! And looks like he is talking about politics without any consequences! I created this topic to talk about Twitter's owner outrageous behaviour and how we find a better replacement for that ruined network.1 point

Yes, but I don't notice any real world difference on either of my 8TB drives with Vista. It's fast regardless of the setting.1 point

I might try some day the RTM as someone suggested, but I have several questions. Firstly, will Vista RTM recognice my sound card and my USB devices? These devices work well with Vista SP2 (a custom iso), and audio is very important for me. Secondly, what about Net Framework 4.6 after the installation? I don't want to break nothing, and the custom iso I used had .net framework 4.6 integrated. Newer .net versions break Windows Update and some old .net 4 applications, so installing .net framework 4.7 or newer is not a solution.1 point

GTX 1050 from 2016 may be too old for such specific software released in 2022. Besides, in laptops they make simplified/reduced GPU units, so it's on par only with the desktop 2GB GT1030, at best.1 point

Yes, disks is fast now as they should be. I wonder why Microsoft would return to a more conservative caching method after XP, in a server system in particular, which has to be fast and expected to powered on all the time. I don't have an UPS. It cooked last summer. I didn't realize how hot the device gets inside as the battery ages.1 point

DISCLAIMER: It has nothing to do with "racism", I'm just not comfortable sharing any of my personal information with a foreign national, who may or may not be compromised, that's my own choice of course. In the meantime, I'm fine sharing that very limited amount of my personal information they ask (only email!), with the German Mastodon Social Network! Keep your info in safe hands!1 point

Another interesting subject - "Attorneys Investigating Elon Musk Over U.S. Citizenship". "I'll be making a FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] request for his immigration application," he continued. "If he lied anywhere on application we will move to strip him of US citizenship. Stay tuned." Obeidallah said in a follow-up tweet: "Just so everyone knows the facts, while I did make a FOIA request for Elon Musk's immigration application he has to consent to the request before I can get the docs. If he consents, I will share the file. If he refuses to consent then we must ask: What is Elon hiding?!" "As a lawyer Im going to do research to see if @elonmusk in any way lied on his application for US citizenship. I'll be making a FOIA request for his immigration application. If he lied anywhere on application we will move to strip him of US citizenship. Stay tuned." There's alot of news circulating around the new Twitter owner, regarding his real citizenship to be exact: "BREAKING: Prominent attorneys are investigating whether Elon Musk lied on his application for U.S. citizenship," read the post. "If it shows that he lied anywhere on the application, its likely he could be stripped of his of U.S. citizenship and deported." Very interesting! TBH, I wasn't a great social media fan in the past. I do have an old Twitter account, though, but migrating to a German non-profit organisation sounds indeed very good. Especially regarding the circumstance that I am German and located in Germany. Thanks for pointing me to that!1 point

I also hate Twitter now. I’m proud to say that I was permanently suspended from Mr. Muskrat’s rat nest several months ago! Some of my Twitter friends spoke about moving to Mastodon, but I have not joined (yet). I recently heard that Meta (Facebook’s parent company) has plans to launch an alternative social media platform, and Muskrat is so enraged that he has challenged Mark Zuckerberg to a fight. Get him Zuckerberg! https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-v-mark-zuckerberg-could-happen-in-romes-colosseum-2023-61 point

I am still using the official last XP-compatible version Sandboxie 5.22. I checked Sandboxie's compatibility in terms of Windows XP, too. Indeed, the developer David Xanatos compiled a special, last XP-compatible version Sandboxie 5.40 after it had become open source. This version does not need a licence anymore. Here is a download link: https://github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie/releases/download/v5.40/SandboxieInstall32_xp.exe However, I do have a licence, therefore, I am not really interested in.1 point

Subject: Sandboxie It appears that my recollection was faulty. I tracked down a Sampei.Nihira post on the subject of Sandboxie for Windows XP from December 2020. He did not suggest a version earlier than 5.22, but rather version 5.40 (developed after Sandboxie became open source). I will edit my earlier post to correct it. Edit: My recollection wasn’t so bad after all: I was just remembering an earlier post from Sampei.Nihira on February 10, 2020 in which he stated, “The latest version of SandboxIE that best suits working with Windows XP is 3.76.” I will leave my earlier post as it is and apologize for any confusion.1 point

Drinking anything because the government or big corporations told you to is not a good idea. People in America seem to religously follow authorities when it comes to food choices: eat margarine, don't eat margarine, eat eggs, don't eat eggs, throw out your food, be scared botulism... Now Johnny Harris comes back from a Fantastic Odyssey with a revelation and everyone is supposed to rebound and follow him. The race card is also sometimes played when they that asians or africans don't drink milk. It's the choice of these people to have it or not. We've been having dairy products for hundreds of years before these lies had been told. Immitation milks concentrate on recreating the appearance of liquid milk. But the function of milk and cream in food is to mellow sharp, bitter tastes of grain products, roasted beverages, occasionally meat when you add sour cream. I never drink milk straight to wash down my food or to quench thirst on a hot day.1 point

After hard work testing all updates on Windows Vista; I finally managed to make the Extended Kernel of March 2023 revision 1 work with the Windows Vista esu! Several updates are problematic: KB5003210, KB4580385 are most responsible as well as superseded 2022 updates. Cumulative updates are also to be banned. The solution is: to remove all the 2022 updates that have been installed on the system and to install only the non-superseded updates which are security only, and to remove the two updates KB5003210, KB4580385 Then, we can install the extended kernel without having any problem! Updates 2022 need to remove : kb5009601-kb5010403-kb5011486-kb5011525-kb5011942-kb5012137-kb5012150-kb5012632-kb5012658-kb5013619-kb5013636-kb5014006-kb5014010-kb5014743-kb5014752-kb5015866-kb5015870-kb5016129-kb5016669-kb5016686-kb5017358-kb5017371-kb5018413-kb5018446-kb5018450-kb5020005-kb5020019-KB5021289-KB5021293-KB5021657 Updates 2022 need to install : kb5009601-kb5010403-kb5011525-kb5012150-kb5012632-kb5013619-kb5014006-kb5014743-kb5015870-kb5016129-kb5016686-kb5017371-kb5018446-kb5020005-kb5020895-kb5021293 I had the same problem as you and when I deleted the maj to replace them with the others it solved the problem. Sandboxie is an excellent suggestion, but I’ll bet it is already on AstroSkipper’s “internal list.” I can confirm that 5.22 was reportedly the last version to support XP and also that it worked on Vista x86 (see my August 30, 2019 post). @UCyborg are you actually using Sandboxie 5.22 on XP? I recall mentioning 5.22 in a Windows XP thread years ago, but @Sampei.Nihira insisted that an earlier version was best for XP. He was MSFN’s security guru for Windows XP in those days, so perhaps he might have something to add about Sandboxie etc.1 point

I'm sorry, but seriously, @FranceBB tried to explain Avast's behavior to you as much as he can, and you don't appreciate it? This is disrespect and mockery, considering he took his time to write all of this to you, and you also wrote you don't like outdated articles (but want "Fact-checked" and up to date articles, and you sent an outdated article yourself), yet instead of taking the time to appreciate how he explained it as much as he can to you, you just disrespect and mock his explanation to you as "words, words, words, lots of words"! In my opinion, I think FranceBB shouldn't explain things to you next time then, if you will mock his explanations like that.1 point

This thread is typically too "defensive" to want to participate. But the only thought I have is this - what antivirus product out there does NOT have a service running 24/7 and what antivirus product out there does NOT "collect data" from its users? My perception has always been that they *ALL DO*. The line in the consumer-sand is generally NOT that data is collected, but rather that the data is then SOLD to other companies.1 point

Well, I really don't know whether it counts or not, but the BBC wrote an article 7 days ago about the increasing number of accidental phone calls to the police now that Android has released a new feature in which if you press the power button 5 times it will send an emergency alert to your emergency contacts and will also call the police for you. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-65962942 The article has a picture at the very beginning which depicts a police station with operators monitoring incoming calls and on the computer you can clearly see the Windows XP start button with the classic Luna theme: Of course, although the article was released as little as 7 days ago, we don't know whether the picture used is a stock photo or if it's a recent one and they're still using XP to run legacy stable software, this is why I said "I don't know if it counts" at the very beginning.1 point

If you run a UPS, then no. And no worries for the already written files, even without it! The worst that might happen is a damaged file which was wrtitten when the outage happened, and only under some certain circumstances!1 point

Tried to run this on a portuguese (portugal) install of Windows 98 SE. It gave this error due to those missing files. If you ever decide to support this language there is this mega repository (it only has .exe files), (and this zip file for windows me) which I found on this thread that has some of the update files. Thanks for the amazing work you've done.1 point

To manage my user scripts, I use the legacy extension Greasemonkey for Pale Moon in New Moon 28 and the webextension Tampermonkey in Serpent 52. Everything runs well so far. Since the webextension Violentmonkey is mentioned here in the forum again and again, I took a closer look at it and installed the last compatible version 2.14.0 in a fresh profile under Serpent 52. Unfortunately, I found out that it does not work properly. The settings cannot be accessed via the toolbar button. Clicking onto the toolbar button to create a new script does not work either. After a lot of testing, it seems that the last fully working version is 2.13.2. @VistaLover I know you have been using Violentmonkey for some time. What version do you currently have installed? And is it fully functional? Edit: I corrected a memory leak inside my brain and corrected the version numbers. Maybe, I am too tired the last weeks.1 point

uBlock Origin Legacy modified by @AstroSkipper - Part 3 (obsolete) I have again updated uBlock Origin Legacy 1.16.4.31b2 in terms of the filter lists taken from the most recent webextension uBlock Origin 1.49.2. Here is the complete changelog of what I have modified: The file assets.json replaced by the most recent one. Missing filter lists in the folders thirdparties and ublock added. Existing filter lists in the folders thirdparties and ublock updated. Version number changed to 1.16.4.31b2-1.49.2 to clearly see which version the source files were taken from. And here is the download link of uBlock0_1.16.4.31b2-1.49.2.firefox-legacy-filter-lists-mod-by-@AstroSkipper.xpi: https://www.mediafire.com/file/q8u6qc8ahjag5tw/uBlock0_1.16.4.31b2-1.49.2.firefox-legacy-filter-lists-mod-by-%40AstroSkipper.xpi/file And finally, an important recommendation to get a new installation of uBlock Origin Legacy working properly and flawlessly. After uninstalling the previous version (yes, the old version should be uninstalled), delete all remnants via about:config and in your profile folder! The remnants of uBlock Origin which can be viewed via about:config can be easily removed by the extension eCleaner. And in your profile folder, there is a file in the subfolder extension-data called ublock0.sqlite which has to be removed manually. Delete the browser cache, too! If doing so, the updating of the filter lists will work like a charm after installing the new version. All users who have important, individual settings or rules should backup them before cleaning their profile folder. On the dashboard page, there is an item called "Back up to file"" to save the user's settings via uBlock itself. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

@Snowshoe! I have checked your log file. Try following command line option with curl: --ssl-no-revoke. This disables cert revocation checks (Schannel) which most probably caused the error 0x80092012. You should do that only if you trust the server you want to connect. I had a similar problem with wget in the past, and disabling cert revocation was the way to solve it. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point
