a missing follow-up is pushed, and will be available in next build. for the time being you can do it yourself: - open omni.ja with winrar in application's folder - goto omni.ja\chrome\toolkit\content\mozapps\extensions and extract extensions.xul (better keep this window opening) - edit extracted extension.xul, following https://github.com/roytam1/UXP/commit/7c4d0444bd58b0726a2448e294738c1a7df3d298 to remove lines and save file - drop edited extensions.xul back to previous window to update omni.ja - start serpent5 points

Basically, when wanting to install the updates required for extended kernel, I just follow TSNH's guide (the "Preparations:" section, from 3. to 6.). Works everytime.4 points

How to install Office 2016 on Windows Vista 1- Your copy of Vista must be 64-bit, as well as having all the updates up to April 2017 + kb4474419 + kb4493730, plus the latest version of the extended kernel. 2- Have a copy of Office 2016 64-bit handy (The RTM version of July 2015 is needed, since it has an MSI installer like Office 2013, since the following versions use the current installer, which does not work at the moment) 3- Copy to the desktop in a new folder the root of your copy of Office 2016 4- Copy the ProPlus.WW.en-US folder to the desktop (the name may vary due to the language/edition of the copy), this is important since the Office installer detects the edited files and the installer of this folder needs to be edited. 5- In the folder copied to the desktop open ProPlus.WW.msi with Orca, go to InstallExecuteSequence and remove AbortMsi (it blocks the installation outside of setup.exe that verifies the files), then in Components change all Conditional VersionNT >= 601 by VersionNT >= 600. 6- Replace gdiplus.dll with the one from Windows 7, this is the path in the system: c:\windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.windows.gdiplus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.6002.19749_none_56a723b1b598503f\GDIPLUS.DLL 7- In group policies of the local machine, it prohibits rollback (very important) 8- Create an osver.ini file with the following settings (required at all times when installing Office 2016): [global] MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 8- Open ProPlus.WW.msi and after installation the Office 2016 suite should appear in the start menu, but it is not enough! 9- Go back to group policies and disable rollback, but keep osver.ini 10- In the root folder of Office 2016 the only change we will make is to delete the update or updates folder, they cause bugs when installed 11- Open the setup.exe of the normal Office 2016 installer and customize it to your liking (it should install successfully, if an error appears, reboot the system) 12- Replace outlook.exe with this one: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B2PcraGfa0p3yBIGTF19-04vI0dwbFMh/view?usp=drive_link. To avoid missing dependencies. 13- The programs of the Office 2016 suite will need to be detected at all times as Windows 7 or an annoying Windows Installer dialog will appear configuring each time the program starts: [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\EXCEL.EXE] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\MSACCESS.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\MSPUB.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\ONENOTE.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OUTLOOK.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\POWERPNT.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\WINWORD.exe] Enabled=1 Win7SuperVerFix=1 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=7600 14- ¡Enjoy Office 2016!3 points

Fast-forward to 2023 and they go out of their way to keep THEIR anti-virus running at all times if they can, they even deprecated the group policy to disable it which is now considered unsupported and isn't effective. Windows 11 is all about hooking you on Microsoft's services. Supposedly Windows Defender Antivirus (or whatever they call it these days) still disables itself if you install another, but I'm not interested in adopting Windows 11 at this point or running any anti-virus. Haven't used one in over a decade and somehow I survived. Maybe we need a thread about surviving on the modern internet without an antivirus? There are articles suggesting using an anti-virus even on Android smartphones. I use an old version that's supposedly full of holes, been using that thing to interact with my bank and I even logged into the bank couple times in 2020-2021 on an XP x64 installation that is mostly patched to whatever was current in 2011. Nothing bad happened, although it's annoying that you have to use either Android app or Win10 app for 2FA if you even want to login to it on the computer. But the app on the phone alone is somehow secure... I considered changing bank, but I found nothing else of value that would justify bothering with it.3 points

... and: @roytam1 : It's probably caused by UXP #21 and the commits by FranklinDM you backported to our tree... NM28 behaves fine, because it uses the (old) TychoAM those commits target, but "our" Serpent 52.9.0 (unlike the official Basilisk 52.x.x.x) still uses the WebExtensions AM and thus broke ; so, those commits would either have to be reverted for St52 or somehow modified to accommodate St52's WE AM ... Thanks in advance for any fix for this (going back to previous build of St52 as things stand ) ...3 points

Didn't you say in the other thread you're going to update the post with 7-Zip? The current version is 23.01. 7-Zip has a close sibling 7-Zip ZS (Made in Germany), it supports wider range of compression algorithms. It can make archives that plain 7-Zip won't unpack. Last time I checked, which must have been over a year ago, it didn't run on XP. The file manager opens, but it can't open any archive. It seems to run fine on Vista though.2 points

I never remember command line arguments to repack omni.ja the same way it's packed "from the factory".2 points

I'm sorry, but seriously, @FranceBB tried to explain Avast's behavior to you as much as he can, and you don't appreciate it? This is disrespect and mockery, considering he took his time to write all of this to you, and you also wrote you don't like outdated articles (but want "Fact-checked" and up to date articles, and you sent an outdated article yourself), yet instead of taking the time to appreciate how he explained it as much as he can to you, you just disrespect and mock his explanation to you as "words, words, words, lots of words"! In my opinion, I think FranceBB shouldn't explain things to you next time then, if you will mock his explanations like that.2 points

That worked perfectly. Had to deoptimize omni.ja first to make the change but that fixed it.2 points

Personally I wouldn't use Winiso (or any other of the "advanced/automagic" tools to recreate the .iso, let alone a "writing to .iso tool". "Iso writing" may or may not work, of the two I would prefer rebuilding the whole .iso from "source". But if you are using <some way> to mount the .iso stored on a USB thumb drive, and not actually burning it to a CD/DVD and booting from it, it is possible that the little quirks/artifacts that a writing to .iso tool may create would be irrelevant, i.e. it is possible that you can recreate a .iso which is good enough for your use but that may fail if used to burn a CD. I would be curious to know what happens with yours (corrupted) compressed files when you expand them manually. A "normal" XP should have the command line EXTRACT[1] (in Vista and later should have become EXPAND) program, but also 7-zip should be able to expand the compressed files . While expanding you might have some errors, or it may succeed to create the expanded file, in this latter case (since you have another copy of the original expanded file) it would be interesting if there are differences. It is possible (improbable but possible) that your .iso image corruption is not at file level, but somewhere else, and while you can get the file from the mounted .iso, the setup when it is running somehow fails in retrieving it. jaclaz [1] Sometimes as EXTRAC32.EXE, or you may need to find the "support tools" if you want the MS original: https://msfn.org/board/topic/24670-windows-xp-service-pack-2-support-tools/2 points

Yes, most files in a XP .iso are compressed. The program(s) used to compress them are COMPRESS and MAKECAB (and possibly also CABARC). I would try to use first compress (the version that is in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit which can be found on archive.org): https://ss64.com/nt/compress.html You need of course exactly the same version of the files (both the compressor and the actual file to be compressed) so that the compressed file is exactly the same size of the original. Then it is relatively easy to replace the files (actually the bytes representing the files to be replaced) on the .iso image, it is not straightforward, but on a .iso all files should be contiguous so it should be just a matter of locating the position of the file inside the ,iso image and then overwrite with dd or similar the appropriate extent. It has to be checked but either DMDE or ISOBUSTER should be capable of doing this. Otherwise (if you actually need the .iso file) you will need to rebuild the .iso (using either CDIMAGE or MKISOFS) and this may be more difficult (both utilities have lots of settings that need to be used correctly), but it is of course doable. I don't want to put you down in any way, but if you have some corruption in the files, there may be other corruption in other files that you simply couldn't notice because (due to the errors you had) you did not go far enough in the install, so it might take more time and effort than what you may expect. jaclaz2 points

MAYBE BECAUSE WIN32'S INSTALLER NEVER WORKED ON MY PC??? And also it is a hassle to change everything manually and bizzbob's installer is the best so if you stop complaining about me using a better installer and not wasting my time i will appreciate it2 points

This thread is typically too "defensive" to want to participate. But the only thought I have is this - what antivirus product out there does NOT have a service running 24/7 and what antivirus product out there does NOT "collect data" from its users? My perception has always been that they *ALL DO*. The line in the consumer-sand is generally NOT that data is collected, but rather that the data is then SOLD to other companies.2 points

To me, it seems to be more of a lifestyle philosophy. The only people I've ever met that think running XP is "stupid" are people that upgrade their mobile phones once or twice a year. They have to have the "latest and greatest" and are too blind to see that mindset being why they live paycheck to paycheck and have no savings of any kind.2 points

Im having some trouble installing Intel HD Graphics 620 on Windows 7 (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5916&SUBSYS_078B1028&REV_02) I have tried multiple drivers and exes, but nothing seems to work. ... You need the zip CLI of the Info-ZIP utility; Windows binaries courtesy of the German developer Dirk Paehl: https://www.paehld.de/open_source/?Old_programs___ZIP_UNZIP I myself use the 3.1d26+beta version ... 1. Place zip.exe adjacent to extracted directory "omni" 2. CD in the Windows Command Prompt to inside the "omni" DIR; then: "..\zip" -qr9XD "..\omni.ja" * Archive omni.ja created besides the zip.exe binary; NB: this archive is still "un-optimised", so it then needs to be additionally "optimised"... 3. Place the py2.7 script "optimizejars.py" next to zipped archive "omni.ja" 4. With py2.7 installed, execute: python "optimizejars.py" --optimize ./ ./ ./ A copy of that script has been uploaded here ...1 point

Continuing on bitness matters, I still like to use 32-bit stuff on 64-bit OS to save a bit of RAM, also apparently some code sequences just execute more smoothly in 32-bit under certain circumstances. UXP based browsers feel noticeably smoother on my end in 32-bit flavor. Though I only have this aging system for reference and another low-end laptop with 2 GB of RAM from 2014, which could run 64-bit Win10, but it's just unbearable with 64-bit version. I got a newer laptop at work with 12 GB of RAM, where I didn't bother comparing, just threw 64-bit Pale Moon on it to not have to worry about exhausting 32-bit address space. Not sure if even AVX2 build makes much difference, these browsers really like to get "crapped up" and sluggish with use and need restart eventually anyway.1 point

Why (the heck)? Did you believe to be helpful, useful, cool, what? If you think it is a "right thing" to do it would be IMHO only decent to state that you were pasting verbatim a ChatGPT answer and - additionally - quote the exact prompt you gave to ChatGPT. jaclaz1 point

For me, ESET never was, not only it marked legit copy protection game files as "viruses", it also deleted important files on my XP pc and put them to "quarantine" forever, I was not surprised to see it still does! To be fair, I gave it a chance in the past. I remember, I even lost my online registration for the DVD check of Sacred 2 (based on securom). As for your OT question, I fail to understand, why would you be interested, if you discarded ESET anyway? I could only guess, but If you want to be recruited or renew some previous pre-1991 arrangements, I'm sure there's no need to go to Bratislava, and I'm definitely not the one to talk to! NOD32 "Such file could contain valuable information, and losing it is certainly not what you’d wish for" https://hetmanrecovery.com/recovery_news/how-to-return-files-if-eset-nod-deleted-or-placed-them-in-quarantine.htm1 point

Well, I really don't know whether it counts or not, but the BBC wrote an article 7 days ago about the increasing number of accidental phone calls to the police now that Android has released a new feature in which if you press the power button 5 times it will send an emergency alert to your emergency contacts and will also call the police for you. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-65962942 The article has a picture at the very beginning which depicts a police station with operators monitoring incoming calls and on the computer you can clearly see the Windows XP start button with the classic Luna theme: Of course, although the article was released as little as 7 days ago, we don't know whether the picture used is a stock photo or if it's a recent one and they're still using XP to run legacy stable software, this is why I said "I don't know if it counts" at the very beginning.1 point

No worries, let's just forget it! Did you uninstal the old kernel first? The original installer kindly provided by win32 has that option, run as admin. The setup.exe should show you the window where you choose options, if no window shown at all, that's starnge! Could be the remnants of the third party installer by "bizzibob" blocking it.1 point

Hello @Cocodile! I have actually had similar experiences. Avast had always been a performance brake in my old PC. It is a terribly bloated programme package. When I tried to uninstall it a few months ago, the uninstall routine failed completely. Here you can read what I had to go through: I had similar problems with Eset NOD32 Antivirus.1 point

... Actually, it uses Web Assembly (aka wasm) to do it : https://github.com/zamfofex/jxl-crx#readme ... Disgust echoed in the "archive.org" reviews/comments: ... And one thing mentioned in that quote above that seems to be the new "vogue" among app authors is the deprecation of 32-bit binaries (latest Paint.NET runs exclusively on Win10/11 64-bit), a development I face all the more lately when searching for Windows binaries (of various software) compatible with my x86 OS... I mainly blame MS and their latest OS, available solely as 64-bit ...1 point

To all readers of my thread! To avoid the impression that this is a Kaspersky thread , I would like to say a few words about this matter, although I find this topic tiring and sufficiently discussed by now without having received any new information about this abandoned, last version Kaspersky Free Antivirus from 2018 targeting Windows XP. All about Kaspersky has already been discussed in the old thread "Which Antiviruses are Known for a Fact to be Working on XP SP3 as of 2019?", where I was even courteous enough to provide a very rare installer for Kaspersky Free Antivirus 2019, which I had previously cleaned and thus decontaminated, but no longer works under Windows XP, as it turned out. Anyway! Here we go! MSFN is of course internationally frequented, but it is a forum that is localised in France and therefore in Europe. France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania and many other European countries warn against the use of Kaspersky due to significant security concerns. Even more harshly, the USA classifies the products of Kaspersky, considers them dangerous and blacklists Kaspersky antivirus as a risk to national security. The related facts, announcements and links can be found very easily on the internet. But they are known to everyone after such a long time anyway. And for such a software product, I will not make any further effort and waste my time. In any case, all this cannot and must not be ignored by an open mind. Just for clarification, I have created an internal list of security programmes, which now contains over 70 programmes. These will be presented here one by one whenever I have time to research, check and write. As always, real life comes first. Kaspersky was originally also on this internal list because I want to present all options for Windows XP. But I changed my mind about Kaspersky and removed it from my internal list. And not to get confused in this thread, here is my original post with the title "Subject: Kaspersky" once again: So, Kaspersky is history for me, and I no longer consider it an option for Windows XP. I am the creator of this thread here. I will form and fill it with contents as I see fit and can justify to myself. Anyone, who doesn't like that, can always create their own thread and post there whatever they have to say. Greetings from Europe, Germany, AstoSkipper1 point

On the other hand, one might realize one day he's accumulated bunch of savings, grew old and hasn't really lived. Can't say that chasing "latest and greatest" is really "living", though some people want new stuff every once in a while just to break the monotony.1 point

No, you actually shouldn't get this popup message. Did you configure IE exactly as I wrote in my guide? Please provide screenshots of your IE settings! Do not add http://fe2.update.microsoft.com/ to the Trusted Zone of IE!1 point

Interesting news! ProxHTTPSProxy can only be used by programs which offer an option to use the IE proxy settings as for example browsers or use system components if the proxy has been set system-wide. From now on, we have the possibility to connect any program with a server or the internet via the local proxy ProxHTTPSProxy if necessary, of course including the latest protocol TLS 1.3. The solution is SocksCap64. I have already tested this tool, and it works perfectly with ProxHTTPSProxy. Link: https://www.sockscap64.com/homepage/ Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

It's a very long time ago, I used IE6. When IE7 came out, I upgraded to that version and later to IE8. Anyway! As far as I can remember, it has something to do with the signing process of certificates (SHA-1 vs. SHA256), but I have to check that once again if more time is available. Try instead ProxHTTPSProxy 1.3a! You can find it in the section 11.1. Archived Downloads (obsolete) in the first post of this thread. The more recent proxies such as ProxHTTPSProxy 1.5 and up are too "modern" for the old IE6. But actually, you should upgrade to IE8 in any case, only if possible, of course.1 point

Hello @RainyShadow! Thanks for your hint! Frankly, I'd know exactly what I would have to do to port my program package ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3 to Windows 7. For checking or changing the system's proxy status, this OS has also corresponding, native commands which probably could be easily implemented in my program modules. But at the moment, it's not an issue for me.1 point
