But "10 years ago or more", besides me having a lot more hair on my head and less fat in my body , I was a lot less tech savvy than now; "touching" the registry, for whatever reason, was considered by me (after the advice given by many IT-literate people at the time) as a serious "faux pas"...2 points

The U.S. federal government banned the use of Kaspersky software. By Mark Hachman, Senior Editor, PCWorld MAR 28, 2022 9:59 AM PDT Antimalware provider Kaspersky Lab has been blacklisted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, adding its name alongside Huawei and ZTE as companies that are deemed a threat to national security. The FCC maintains a list of companies which are “deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to national security or the security and safety of United States persons,” and added Kaspersky to the list on Friday. Officially, the list now includes China Mobile International USA Inc., China Telecom (Americas) Corp, and AO Kaspersky Labs, as well as their subsidiaries. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said in a statement that adding those companies to the list “will help secure our networks from threats posed by Chinese and Russian state backed entities.” If a company is on the restricted list, it can’t receive federal subsidies, Bloomberg reported. The U.S. federal government banned the use of Kaspersky software in federal information systems in 2017 because of concerns about Kaspersky’s links to the Russian government. Individual users may continue to use products blacklisted by the FCC if they choose to do so, however. Kaspersky does not appear in PCWorld’s list of the best antivirus programs for your PC but does appear in the current list of PCWorld’s best free antivirus programs for Windows. If you try to install Kaspersky’s free tools, Windows Defender may flag Kaspersky as dangerous. We encountered the issue in our testing, though it wasn’t clear why the issues occurred. Author: Mark Hachman, Senior Editor As PCWorld's senior editor, Mark focuses on Microsoft news and chip technology, among other beats. He has formerly written for PCMag, BYTE, Slashdot, eWEEK, and ReadWrite. https://www.pcworld.com/article/626854/kaspersky-blacklisted-as-a-risk-to-u-s-national-security.html1 point

I would not use either on Vista. I would use (and do use) v94 forks for anything I run with Vista or higher. I have no need for anything higher than v94. And there is no such thing as "future proof" - we can only find what works for us "today" and we have to decide for ourselves if we want to be a dog chasing its tail with constant updates that gain us nothing or if we are content with running "old" and not having to deal with the hassle and nuisance of constantly upgrading.1 point

Dad Looking Forward To The Peace And Quiet Of Work After The Holidays LIFE·Jan 2, 2023 · BabylonBee.com SAN DIEGO, CA — With the last hours of the Christmas and New Year's seasons ticking away, a local man found himself looking forward to the coming peace and quiet he will experience when returning to work after the holiday break. "It will be so wonderful to go back to the seemingly endless, daily grind of my job after this period of noise and chaos," said Lloyd Braun as his children ran screaming in circles around him. "It's important to have a break from celebrating and weathering daily hurricanes in the living room." Braun had initially fallen into the annual trap of looking forward to the Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Year's holiday season, thinking it would be a wonderful time of relaxation and offer an opportunity to recharge his batteries at the end of the year. Unbeknownst to him, his wife had been looking forward to his time off from work, taking opportunities each day to "get some stuff done" while he was available to stay with the kids. Before long, Braun found himself longing for the stress of his job. "I really find myself missing the endless meetings, frustrations with coworkers, and unreasonable expectations I deal with at work," he said. At publishing time, Braun was excitedly packing up his briefcase, laying out his outfit for his first day back at work, eagerly looking at his upcoming work calendar, and dreaming of the time he would have to spend sitting in his car in heavy traffic during his morning and evening commutes to and from the office. If I ever drink anything alcoholic these days, it's a small glass of white wine per year, only for new year time really. I was told in the past in one social setting I should drink a bit to ease up, apparently I appear real tense in those. That time I just said I'm not much for alcohol. There was one other time before that when I did opt to drink some beer with the guys I was with at some bar, all it did was it gave me a headache and sent me to the toilet sooner.1 point

Saturn has 7 layers of rings Saturn has 7 layers of rings. Galileo first saw the rings in 1610 through a telescope. Some of the Saturn rings are about 242,000 miles in diameter and some are really small at only a couple of hundred meters thick. Sometimes, the rings of Saturn gradually disappear because of the tilt of Saturn till they become invisible from Earth. Every 14 years, the rings look like they’ve just gone. Saturn: Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in our solar system after Jupiter and 9 times wider than Earth. Saturn is a gas planet. It is one of the four planets that are called ‘Jovian Planets’ because they are made up of gas. Saturn’s core is rocky and may be covered in liquid gas, studies say. Saturn’s rings are made up of millions of ice crystals, some very big and others as small as specks of dust. Saturn is made up of hydrogen and helium which makes it incredibly light. So much so, that it would float in a bathtub; that is if you managed to find a big enough tub for it! Saturn’s atmosphere is not always calm. There are storm winds travelling at 1,800 km/h present on the planet. Saturn has a very strong magnetic field as compared to Earth. This means that it has a high level of radiation because it is known to trap particles that have high energy in its atmosphere. Saturn has a total of 62 moons. Titan is Saturn’s largest moon and is also the second largest moon in the solar system after Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. Saturn weighs 95 times more than Earth. That is one heavy planet! Saturn is at a distance of 1,426,000 km from the Sun. The planet takes 29 ½ years to orbit around the Sun. This means that one year on Saturn is equal to 29 ½ Earth years. Saturn is so big that you can fit 760 Earth-sized planets into it. - from here: https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/fascinating-saturn-facts-and-information-for-kids/1 point

The Chrome version 110 will come out in February, and Chromium-based browsers and applications will base themselves off 110 starting from then. Right now it is still somewhat obscure. Opening a file and checking its version information would be slower than what GetVersionEx does, which is to make a call to another function which accesses a data structure located in memory. But Chromium already did both and still does now. I think the big difference is that some Windows 8+ specific code paths are still being skipped in Opera.1 point

AS A FORMER FIGHTER PILOT WHO ENCOUNTERED UAP, WE NEED SCIENCE—NOT STIGMAS AND CONSPIRACIES—TO SOLVE THIS MYSTERY RYAN GRAVES· ·DECEMBER 31, 2022 Ryan Graves is a former Navy fighter pilot and Chair of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) UAP Integration & Outreach Committee (UAPIOC). The following commentary is in response to a series of recent Op-Eds published in the Wall Street Journal by columnist Holman Jenkins, who named Ryan directly in his November critique. The author’s opinions expressed here are his own and do not necessarily reflect those of The Debrief. A MAJOR BARRIER to our understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) is not just government secrecy: it’s stigma. Conspiracy theories like those perpetuated by Holman Jenkins in his recent Wall Street Journal columns, under titles like “UFO ‘Mystery’ Shouldn’t Drag On,” “The UFO Bubble Goes Pop,” and, most recently (and perhaps his most unhinged), “The UFO Crowd Wants an Alien Invasion for Christmas,” only help breed the stigma that hinders the very kind of scientific approaches he agrees are needed to resolve the UAP mystery. Jenkins offers the idea that maybe a secret military laser program is being tested on active-duty pilots in midflight, deceiving them—and their infrared and radar sensors—into observing UAP by “creating plasma bubbles in the air.” Jenkins also says the DoD “may know exactly what they are” when the Department’s own UAP report to Congress says they do not. He has even gone so far as to say that recent momentum on this issue is due to “intelligence officials who think their job includes promoting false and tendentious information to the American public for their own purposes,” without offering any idea as to what those purposes might be, then accuses advocates of believing that “aliens are a Jesus stand-in.” This kind of cynical speculation gives rise to the stigma that has long surrounded UAP. Not only does it have a chilling effect on military and commercial pilots coming forward, but it also discourages scientists from pursuing funding to study these phenomena.... No, this is not what I would do... So I would have two copies of the same profile(s) which diverge more and more in the future, if I would copy the NM28 profiles to NM27. Or...I would have to copy the profiles always when I want to use the other version - extremely inconvenient. An advanced warning would we good in case of the separation of the profiles would be a final intended decision. There is no other way to satisfy both sides, I think. So you have to change something in one line of four shortcuts (one time only, not every time you're using the other version) - this is much more easier then copying profiles whenever you want to use the other version (NM27/28). You also don't need any .bat to server your requirements. If you want to start NM27 with it's dedicated profile, click the NM27 shortcut - if you want to start NM28 with it's dedicated profile, click the NM28 shortcut. The issue @VistaLover mentioned didn't occur to me in the last years when I was using Nm27/28, as mentioned above - else I wouldn't suggest this method. In conclusion the "shortcut method" I described above is a good deal, I would think. OK, so OE Classic isn't a good replacement for Outlook Express... There are browsers for Win9x/NT4, actually: - K-Meleon 1.5.4 (2022/12/08) - RetroZilla 2.2 (2022/12/08) - RZ browser 2.2 (2022/12/08) "RetroZilla" is a suite (like SeaMonkey), "RZ browser" is just the browser. Of course, their engine (especially when it comes to JavaScript) is aged, but they support TLS 1.2. They are available via @roytam1's blog (https://rtfreesoft.blogspot.com/) or via my website (authorized mirror, https://soggi.org/misc/tools.htm). kind regards soggi1 point

Well, I finally solved it about a year ago in one of those rare instances when I actually manage to find time to work on my long-suffering never-completed projects. You can stop the process that "deselects" these components by editing their respective .INF files and commenting out the "ValidateProc" line in each of their sections. Extract MOTOWN.INF and MMOPT.INF from precopy2.cab if they don't already exist in the main \WIN95 folder. Find the sections [media_acm], [Rec], [Vol], [media_clips], and [CDPlayer]**. Comment out (place a semicolon at the beginning of) the line in each section that begins with ValidateProc. (i.e. ;ValidateProc) Save changes. This should solve the problem. ** = I don't remember anything offhand about the [CDplayer] section; or whether or not this is required. I may not have looked into it further at the time, but just handled it similarly to the others once I figured out how to prevent them from being deselected.1 point

It probably tries to connect to OE Classic' s Activation Server, a now popular method for activating payware; the AS checks the validity of used license code (being legitimately acquired/"whitelisted" and not being shared beyond the sanctioned number of different devices/installations); should be easy to discover the hostname/IP of the Activation Server it tries to connect to via a MITM proxy; I suppose software like ProxHTTPsProxy could be used for that task... You probably want an "off-line" activation method for your work copy, but the author may respond, and rightly so, that such a method hasn't been provisioned for an app (e-mail client) that has to connect to the web for its intended (premium) functions... FWIW, their order page promises "instant" access (in bold) to the premium features ... https://www.oeclassic.com/order1 point

It's not technically corrupt (well it could be said from the older version perspective), sometimes you just have to move/migrate things around, rewrite some data to improve something and the old version obviously doesn't understand these changes. It's a one-way thing and the only guaranteed way back is with a backup. This is actually tweakable. There are registry settings specifying how exactly should the associated program be invoked, so you can put whatever arguments you need there. Does shell->open->command ring any bells?1 point

It occurs to me that WETV would be a great set of call letters for a US TV station, but a quick search shows there are none with those call letters. A few quick postscripts to this saga: First, Serpent 55 (thus presumably all UXP browsers as well: Serpent 52, NM 28, IceApe, etc.) work with Office 365's Webmail page, so that may be the easiest option for XP users. It's certainly the cheapest! Second, paying the OE Classic authors $37 wasn't the end of the story, at least for me. They did send me my license code, but when I tried to activate OE Classic, it tried to connect to the Internet, and failed. I don't know which site it's trying to connect to, but it's evidently blocked by ForcePoint (our company's Internet censorware). I have a proxy server set up to bypass ForcePoint, but naturally, OE Classic doesn't seem to honor the system proxy settings! So I couldn't activate OE Classic and get rid of that damn ad in outgoing emails. I emailed the author but have yet to receive a reply. If they don't come up with a solution, I'll have to ask for a refund. I assume the purpose of OE Classic accessing the Internet is to ensure the same license code can't be used to activate more than one copy. That makes OE Classic considerably more expensive: if I need a home copy, a work copy, and a laptop copy, that's $111; quite a bit steeper than it sounded at $37! So even if they do come up with a solution for #2, I may still ask for a refund and just use #1 instead. Or I could activate it on XP but use (free) Mozilla Thunderbird for the other two PCs.1 point

The October 2020 version works if it is set to "big picture" mode. You will see store information and everything. But sometime after that, the login window switched to being rendered by CEF (Chromium) so it is not possible to sign in as there is no text, graphics or buttons on the login screen now. As for the Intel drivers, I have a couple of systems that can use them but they are in very poor shape. Various differences in rendering quality are known to exist between Vista and 7 and I don't want Vista to be compromised by any changes I do. So I'll try to do something that doesn't "change" Vista to its detriment. Also, the Vista extended kernel will be able to run Chromium 110 and 111, at least with --no-sandbox. I will try to get the sandbox working in time for the main release of Chromium 110 in February. I am adding the appropriate functions to kernel32 and userenv. I just checked the Chromium source code and discovered that the version nags are persistent now because they are not calling GetVersionEx* or similar to check the version, but they are checking the version number of kernel32 instead.1 point

You would be best suited to search for such compatibilities online. It depends on the board and the NVME combination, whether or not Windows 7 will boot on it. You may need to install both the storage controller and disk driver to your boot and install images. Due to the various incompatibilities and not having time to figure out which NVMe/board options worked, I had decided to not use any NVMe for Win7 at all and only M.2 SATA SSD.1 point

Release of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3 I am pleased to release my brand-new version of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3 to the public. The main feature of my program package is @cmalex's ProxyMII, a TLS 1.3 proxy. I replaced @heinoganda's TLS 1.2 proxy from my last release of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu REV3e 3V1 by @cmalex's TLS 1.3 proxy. This sounds simple, but, unfortunately, it wasn't. A lot of problems had to be solved to implement this proxy completely, enhance functionality, and get control of it as convenient as the old one. ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu is a one-click menu in systray to access and control the brand new TLS 1.3 proxy ProxyMII, better known as ProxHTTPSProxy, credits to @cmalex and its original creator whenever. All information about ProxHTTPSProxy can be found in my article: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183352-proxhttpsproxy-and-httpsproxy-in-windows-xp-for-future-use/?do=findComment&comment=1213600 which will be updated in the next time. @cmalex's ProxyMII, dated from 2022-07-17, is now based on OpenSSL 3.0.5 and Cryptography 3.4.8. It provides all TLS protocols from TLS 1.0 up to TLS 1.3 and its corresponding ciphers. ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3 is the third release of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu 3.0, now in version 3.0.0.0, shortened 3V3. It is a synthesis of the excellent, brand new TLS 1.3 proxy ProxyMII, dated from 2022-07-17, credits to @cmalex at MSFN, several self-programmed executables and a very few commands, credits to @AstroSkipper at MSFN, the freeware PopMenu 3.0, credits to Jochanan Agam at freeware.persoft.ch, the open source utility Min2Tray v1.7.9, credits to Junyx at junyx.breadfan.de, and the program Certificate Updater 1.6, credits to @heinoganda at MSFN. If you wonder when the second version was released, the answer is very simple: never. This version was unofficial. ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu is not a classical launcher, it is rather a systray pop-up menu. It can be totally customized and continuously extended according to the user's needs due to its modular structure, therefore, much more flexible than a classical, compiled launcher. More features can be added easily without touching the existent code. Due to ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu's modular structure, the user can change, add, delete and reorder features. Even the icons in the menu can be changed easily by the user. Here is a screenshot: System requirements: @cmalex's ProxyMII was created by Python 3.7.1 which requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable or Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (latest version 14.28.29213.0). Furthermore, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 is now required to run my program package. Check if both are installed in your system! A CPU with SSE2 instruction set is no longer required, SSE only is sufficient. Features of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3: Here is the complete list of features implemented in ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3 and a short explanation of them: Start ProxHTTPSPoxy – Activates the proxy's settings in IE LAN Settings, starts the proxy, and deactivates and cleans its settings after closing, all automatically. Stop ProxHTTPSPoxy – Stops the proxy and closes its status window. Minimize ProxHTTPSProxy to systray – Minimizes ProxHTTPSProxy's status window to systray and shows its icon there. Restore ProxHTTPSProxy from systray – Restores ProxHTTPSProxy's minimized status window from systray. Hide ProxHTTPSPoxy – Hides ProxHTTPSProxy's status window completely. Show ProxHTTPSPoxy – Shows ProxHTTPSProxy's hidden status window again. Check if ProxHTTPSPoxy is running (in RAM) – Checks if ProxHTTPSPoxy is running in the background. cacert.pem Update – Performs an update of the file cacert.pem. Root Certificates Update – Performs an update of the system's Root Certificates. Open IE Proxy settings – Opens the tab LAN Settings in IE's Internet Options.
