  1. Hi ! First off , 342.01 are not the "newest drivers" . I believe the last ones for GTX295 are 340.72 dated 08/13/2014 , 9.18.13.4072. Even if they are not , they are very stable , try them. Second , lemme ask , why do you need all those "latest updates" ? Do you somewhat feel more "secure" with them ? Perhaps this is the problem . See , the driver is 7 y/o. , and the updates are from this year ?! Nvidia did some "security" changes to the drivers (kernel) after 2014 , so I suggest you install clean Vista SP1 from ISO and start to test with 340.72. Here they are : https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-GeForce-iCafe-Graphics-Driver-34072.shtml https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-GeForce-iCafe-Graphics-Driver-34072-64-bit.shtml

  2. Please take the little ammount of effort to check if anyone hasn't already mentioned it. Also there is a workaround.

  3. @Jody Thornton The last 32-bit version of official Basilisk MCP (Moonchild) ever released was Basilisk-52.9.2020.11.25 That version was compiled without an auto-updater built-in, so will stay "put" there indefinitely... If you/your parents aren't overly concerned with security (the vendor of Win7 has stopped patching the OS - without a fee - since Jan 2020) and if their frequently visited sites are not in the habit of constant changes (usually for the worse), you/they should be covered where web compatibility is concerned for a few more months, at least... AFAIAA, that last version of Bk only supported the so-called "legacy" extensions (no WE), and the ones targeting pre-quantum Firefox would not have any problem installing there... Migrating the profile of Basilisk 52.9.2020.11.25 32-bit to Serpent 52.9.0 (32-bit) should be straightforward, except, perhaps, where stored account credentials are concerned, because MCP use different versions of the NSS library to the one used by @roytam1 ; more below... There are no plans here to adopt any breaking changes affecting the installation of pre-quantum Firefox legacy extensions (from CAA, GitHub or elsewhere...) on either Serpent/UXP or NM/UXP, as far as it's humanly possible - but no-one can guarantee you or your parents that an extension currently working fine on Basilisk-52.9.2020.11.25 (and which should behave similarly on latest Serpent 52) won't break in the future (near or distant, who knows?) when the browser engine/core itself progresses, under constant development, to tackle web compatibility issues of the future... If you are particularly concerned about CTT, I'm running v.1.7.8.2019.10.27 in latest St52 32-bit (buildID=20210319014823) and I currently see no issues whatsoever with it... But Aris has stopped developing it further, so the chances of a fix coming from him in the event of a future breakage (under St52) are slim... But, in my educated guess, major changes affecting the Australis interface of Basilisk (/Serpent) are quite improbable... Now, before migrating to St52 from Bk, make sure to first install a password exporting extension (e.g. https://github.com/JustOff/password-backup-tool/releases/tag/1.3.2 ) and export the stored accounts/passwords into a file; then, once on Serpent 52, install the same add-on there and import the same accounts/passwords from that saved file... Starting with a new/pristine St52 profile would be optimal. only transferring afterwards vital pieces of the old Bk profile (bookmarks, passwords, extensions, history, etc.), but I realise people pressed-for-time opt for cross-app profile transplantation; fingers-crossed, there's very little that could go wrong in the migration from Bk52 -> St52, so hoping for the best! Hope I've helped... @ArcticFoxie : Serpent 52 is no more a BETA browser than the already used Basilisk 52 one... But I generally agree with the gist of your post! Not quite the same, but I distinctly remember how difficult it was for my late father (God rest his soul) to adopt, at 75 then, to the changes made from analog terrestrial TV to digital terrestrial broadcast (DVBT); we decided to let him continue using the old TV set he was familiar with, but connect it to an external DVBT standalone receiver, boy was that hard to teach him using that! Best regards... Later edit: Nope, it's made by a member of the MCP team, Lootyhoof: https://repo.palemoon.org/Lootyhoof/photonic In fact, I'm already using this here, with custom modifications to make it Vista compatible:

  4. Nope not stepping on toes at all. Here's what the situation is. My parents are in their late 70s. They migrated from a failing Windows XP machine to an i5 based Windows 7 machine. Now they used to play all sorts of 16-bit Windows games (ala Windows Entertainment Pack from the 1990s). These just worked on XP, so I wasn't about to just teach my folks how to use DOSBox and run customized Win 3x sessions for each game, or even set up Windows 3.1 in a virtual DOSBox for them to use - just too confusing. So I had the vendor preload Windows 7 x86 (and it's a sad thing too because he inadvertently installed 32 GB of RAM - I only asked him to install 4 GB). Anyway, their games run with aplomb! Next for browsing they use to use New Moon 27, so I decided to get them onto something a wee bit more modern, but that could also use an older Flash plugin. They play these online Flash games, and they love them. I'm sure that the sites aren't really maintained anymore, and won't ever be switching to HTML5. So I settled on Basilisk 32-bit. My folks really liked the looks of my Waterfox browser (which is Quantum based), so I used Classic Theme Restorer with the Photonic theme (I think it's from JustOff) to mimic Quantum. I did a pretty good job, and they love it. I almost wanted to use it. My mom can follow instructions fairly well, but for serious fixes, I just take care of it during visits. As it stands, there's not much to teach. For what they use it for, Basilisk just woks, and I'm sure Serpent substituted in will be fine. They used Pale Moon for quite some time, and then New Moon later. Again everything just worked for them, so there's no learning curve that I'm concerned with. I'm just worried that the customizations I have done will cease to work one day, if I switch them to Serpent, and make that dreaded upgrade when the add-on "death day" arrives. I hope that clarifies what I'm concerned about

  7. The next problem we face, is people stealing other peoples software, which was a big problem during the 1980's......I might have been kid but I wish it was like the 1980's still. I miss the early 1990's also. I miss the hair, the legs, the suits, the cars, the buildings, I even miss the Amiga, Atari, Amsterdam. and even when the Mac we fun to use. I miss paint programs, I miss the way things made sense, instead of now. I miss it so much. I know our medical is high, and our technology is greater for it, but I feel like the world is so disconnected with itself. I am happy for some things but I am sad for others. While I feel sad, it is almost like the world of dumb people keep getting dumber but at the same time they are happy for that stupidity.

  8. Yes , I know , thanks cap. My GTX 980 is 4GB , yours is shown as 8GB. And the dude is talking about 600-series ancient cards in the wrong topic.

  9. First off , I'm not the only one who is "mistaken" , scroll back and you will see the same issue has been reported by uCyborg and asdf2345 . Their Nvidia CPL also shows PCI-e ver. 1.0. Second : why would you even mention Kepler cards ? It is off-topic . This is only about 900 and 1000 series, asdf2345 and I have tested on GTX 980. Forget about my Titan , it was used only to confirm the issue with XP64 not detecting PCI-e 2.0, besides , asdf2345 has tested on a laptop. As you can see , it has nothing to do with my mobo.

  11. @asdf2345 , what does your Nvidia CPL say about PCI-e version with this GTX980 ? Forgot to say , I've tested not only with GTX980 , but with Titan too , it's all the same . At first one member suggested that it could be something wrong with my mobo , but looks like the mobo is just fine , as you can see, at least three members , now including you , have reported the similar readings.

  12. I am 70 years old. I am happy with my computer and windows 10 pro. My default browser is FF 87 portable. Others in the system are the newest iceveasel and mypal. The system works flawlessly and even the March update turned out to be kind. I don't use embedded MS software. I am using MWSnap from 2003 - in compliance mode. I use the 2007 student office in compliance mode. I am using mpc-hc. I added directx 9.29 redist installation in compatibility mode. I ran the pSX emulator and played Rayman, Badicot 3, Bandicot 4, Colin races. I am active on many computer forums and I am curious about the world. I was able to set up windows 10 - it's light and fast. I was able to set Firefox to 1 content processor. I am using 10 blocking add-ons. I have lightly on YT and Netflix. In 10 years I will surprise everyone on the msfn forum

  15. Ah, Flash is another story. My dad visits a crossword puzzle site that used to be Flash but the web site has since updated. Our family had the opposite as far as Flash compatibility - it wasn't the in-their-70s parents that couldn't live without it but the Gen X sister! And for her it was her SCREEN SAVER program that she felt she "couldn't live without". So I logged her CPU temperatures and showed her how her laptop runs right around 34 to 38 degrees C and SKYROCKETS to 82 to 84 degrees C when the SCREEN SAVER is running. She, THANKFFULLY, hasn't used a (d@mn) screen saver since

  16. You have certainly helped @VistaLover. And that was my thinking that if they stay on official Basilisk for the meantime, they will be fine. They don't stray to different sites all that much. No online banking is done AT ALL. When it comes time to switch to Serpent, there aren't many passwords they store at all, So I don't worry about that in the least bit whatsoever.

  17. Sure less calls, but now they can't run their Flash games. Just like the new CD player won;t spin their 78s (just a joke but you see what I mean?) In this case, not teaching a old dog new tricks is letting them compute like it's 2005. Oh wait, that's the same mandate as MSFN :p (kidding ......lol)

  18. Hmm, how to reply without stepping on toes? And apologies in advance if a toe gets stepped on. My parents are in their 70s. When it comes to computers and a parent in their 70s, you can not teach an old dog new tricks. And the very mention of "Classic Theme Restorer" tells me that your parents are the same way, correct? So you've compromised by providing an "updated" browser but adding an add-on so the parents "see what they used to see", correct? "Up-to-date" can mean so many things. They're running Win7 which ended support over a year ago! But you've provided them with a "warm fuzzy" feeling of being "secure" and "up-to-date" by having them use a BETA browser? Yes, I said BETA - because that IS what the RT1 browsers are! I mean, the decision is obviously yours. But I can tell you what me and my brothers and sisters were all but "forced" to do. Answering computer questions from a parent in their 70s that doesn't "use" the computer for anything but email, reading news web sites, and playing solitaire gets OLD very very very quickly! Teaching the old dog to use any "add-on" turned out to be even worse! We bought them a Win10 computer, installed Chrome, and *FORCED* them to the *LEARN* Chrome. What used to be 30 questions per week is now only 3 per month - so THAT, my friend, is PROGRESS A *beta* browser is NOT for a 70yr old! (there are exceptions!) The average 70yr old has ZERO use for an "add-on", they require pretty much everything "default". Not likely the "two cents" you were hunting for -- but I am speaking from experience, I gave up a long time ago trying to "teach" my parents MyPal, Pale Moon, New Moon, Firefox. "Mileage may vary"

  21. The farthest back that I can remember is December 25, 2012. I was really young and I remember when we got our first family PC. Custom parts on the table and a Rosewill case, with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. We were upgrading from our old Sony Vaio desktop which had a Pentium 4, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD, running Windows XP Home. The new PC was a AMD Phenom 1055T, 8GB of ram, and a 500GB WD Blue which is now in my NAS. My first laptop was a Dell Inspiron from 2007 which came with Vista, but eventually made its way onto Lubuntu 12.04 LTS. I then had a HP Pavilion G7. AMD A8-4500M and 6GB of ram running Windows 8. I didn't mind it, but it worked fine. in 2017 I upgraded my CPU to an FX 8350 and my laptop then moved to a Toshiba Satellite R945, i5 3210M and 8GB of ram, running Windows 7. At this time I was on 10 for the most part. 2019 my PC broke and then I upgraded to an i5 8400, 16GB of ram and Windows 10 1809, plus a 250GB NVME SSD. Later last year I upgraded to an i7 9700K. The dumbing down of computers, software and hardware is not JUST Microsoft. It's a trend that I don't understand. It removes unique parts of things and everything just looks the same. Back in the mid to late 2000s, you had console menu music like the PS2, Gamecube, Wii and even the original Xbox. You had the Wii shop music, the DS alarm feature. It got even better in the early 2010s with the 3DS eShop and the PS4 which had menu music. The Xbox One though was our first look at the decline of technology. Techology was at its peak in the late 2000s. Windows Vista and 7 made huge changes to Windows. But then in 2015 Windows 10 came around and that was our look at oversimplification. Logos started going flat, design started losing its transparency. macOS went flat, Ubuntu went flat. We lost startup sounds and in 2017, we lost the Nintendo charm. The switch had no eshop music, no menu music, no fun text or easter eggs. I wish technology was like how it was back then, when it had charm and everything was unique. Now everything just feels the same. W10 1803 vs W10 2004, no difference in the UI. Just some icons are different and some defaults have changed.

  22. I think even if that happens, .jar files run in a Java virtual machine, so it wouldn't really matter Worst case scenario, someone needs to port latest OpenJDK 8 or whatever to XP, but I'd bet money older Java 8 versions would work fine

  26. Hello MSFN. I've found out an easy method of installing Office 2007 on Windows 2000. You'll need the Chrome tool from blackwingcat: here (or FCWIN2K found here) UUR daily (April 2013) And a copy of Office 2007. Pre-installation: Install UURollup v11 daily. You can get it from here. I would recommend installing the BlackWingCat Extended Kernel instead, found here. Step 1: Download and unpack the Chrome tool, or FCWIN2K from BWC. Step 2: Open the tool and click on "Set compatible registry" (not needed with FCWIN2K) Step 3: Start the Office 2007 installation. Select "Custom" and uncheck "Microsoft Groove". Everything else will work. Step 4: When installation is complete, go into the Chrome tool and hit "Clean up setting registry". (not needed with FCWIN2K) Done! You can now use Office 2007 on Windows 2000!
