  1. im considering nLite-ing a comy of XP for an old compaq laptop i have (my 233 with 64mb ram) and i was just wondering if theres anything that could help me. all i need on this computer is internet (wifi) and email. nothing more. so i wanted to maybe get a little bit of help here and compile something here to make the best and smallest installation of XP. iv looked at MicrowinX and it looks alright, but it said it doesnt have wifi and dhcp support. which will be added, but i dont know when that will happen. so, if anyone out there has any information for me, it would greatly appreciated to be passed on. i can use 2000Pro or XP pro, whichever, i dont care, i just want a good, fast stable OS for an old computer. im even considering DSL linux, but i dont know enough about that right now. thanks for reading. Read this first just some guidelines though, just read this if you dont want to read all the beginning 1, internet (wifi) 2, email 3, small installation thats all id like to have, tommorrow (not tonight because its 11:00 o'clock here and im going to bed right after i post this) i am going to grab nLite 1.01 and test an installation of XP or 2000 in a virtual pc and see how small i can get it. im going to do this on my own, but it would be great to get some support here. thanks again for reading this and good night (sorry to ask this if its already all over, but i couldn't find anything really to do with this in the search) edit : nvm, i went through nLite and made one, slimmed the CD down to 160mb o.O (actuall install is 750mb) and it runs very well on a 233.
  2. why does timeless keep posting this stuff anyway, im confused is he just trying to up his post count?
  3. the major problem ( that i think anyway) is that win98 is just too old to be fully ported to look like XP. (not that im saying 98 is a bad os) it would need severe modding just to get it too look like XP. right now im running XP and 98 SE as a dual boot on my ancient laptop (dell inspiron 7000) and it runs fine under both operating systems. especially since im using the unofficial service pack and the 98 revolutions pack 4. i dont really like RPlite, it works good, but i prefer 98RP4. anyway, i dont like when people say "just upgrade to XP". people have an os they like to use and they want to modify it to look newer, but prefer to have an older operating system, perhaps for compatibility with older hardware/software. or they just like the older ones, ever think of that? its personal preference. anyway, regards.

  5. this program sounds like something i could use to get the unattended installation for my laptop iv wanted for a long time now. ill give it a try
  6. it could very well be, try changing the hard drive.
  7. im pretty much out of ideas here, i know what it is you want to do now but i just dont have any ideas in this department. im pretty much done, ill offer any other information i can if the situation arises. regards, cygnus
  8. its a command line program, most likley youd have to create a batch file to initiate it if you want to use it the way its intended.
  9. well, for me i just use the regular shutdown/startup sequence all the time. i rarely hibernate, and when i do i don't have problems with it. now, it really depends on what your trying to do. do you have multiple computers? if so, its probably better to shutdown and startup, rather than hibernate to prevent you from having to fix your computers continuously. anyway, i hope you can get more help on this issue, im sorry i could help any more. ps: i do know that if you acidentally shut off your computer when its still shutting down, you can render the installation dead. i know this from having to goto the can very ugently
  10. unfortuneately i don't know too much about actually hacking the os. the best information i give you, is to make the batch file with RUNDLL32.EXE PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState in it, then just put that on your start menu on the left hand side in the white space with all your custom applications. i tested this on my laptop (which isnt ACPI compliant, just APM) and it works. maybe thats what you mean? ill keep looking for information for ya though im sorry, but thats all i can really do right now for you
  11. heres the shutdown command for the hibernation via cmd prompt RUNDLL32.EXE PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState just paste that in a bat file, place a shortcut to the bat file on your start menu, then you can now just push "Start ---> Hibernate" then itll hibernate for ya
  12. i thought of one other thing you can try and see if you like it. if you turn off the welcome screen, you can have the classic windows 2000 shutdown dialog. when you set it to what you want, it always stays at that options, so you could just go start ---> shut down ---> Enter then it will hibernate. but youll lose the welcome screen and itll kinda look like windows 2000 when it starts up. heres a screenshot of what i mean. to do this, go Start----> Control Panel ----> User Accounts ----> Change the way I log on or off ---> Use the welcome screen ----> Apply options then close all that and save your settings then do a reboot. the only draw back to this is you'll lose your Start Menu picture. im still looking around, give me luck i can probably make you a bat file that you just double click on the desktop or put it on your start menu in your programs that will work for this purpose too.
  13. i dont know if you know, but if you start the shutdown dialog and push Shift the standby button turns to hibernate. i dont know if thats what you want, but its better than nothing at this point. ill keep looking for ya.
  14. god kazaa is terrible, dont use it. its full of spyware and stuff. the best one is either gnucleus (hard to set up) or bearshare lite. but i would recommend doing a dual boot and not having your drive partitioned 5 ways. just make 3 partitions, 1 for each OS you need, then one for backup. that way your not running all over the place to find stuff. plus the drive constantly searching for the programs on the disk will severly degrade performance on a machine like that. my laptop has one 40gb hdd and i just use it as one partition, same on my desktop but that has an 80gb in it. anyway, hope you get it working the way you want it. regards, cygnus Are you serious??? i think she meant 256MB
  15. i dont think you can hack the button to do that. but if you computer is able to be shut down properly through the external power button, you can more than likely set it to hibernate the computer. iv been hibernating my computer for a long time and i haven't had any problems. its probably a good idea to at least shut it down normally once and a while, because if you dont, its like running the thing solid for however long. good luck.

  19. but mine 2.66 Ghz CPU is of 533 MHz FSB speed.. SO is this ok enough to use vista. i read on microsoft site that it requires minimum 800MHz FSB speed Cpu why is it so plz guide me the FSB on my computer is 133, an 800 is the minimum to run vista on. IE: it will only run the classic look, maybe the minimal vista look if you have a powerful enough video card. but, you have a fairly decent computer there, theres no reason that it wont run it quite well. i ran it on my rig, an AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 640mb of ram, and an ATi Radeon 9200SE and it ran "alright" i wouldnt want to run it just yet, maybe when its out of beta. but i dont want to spend the money to get it so im just going to stick with XP pro. rest assured that if you get the beta and it doesnt run right on your machine (which im sure it will run fine) the only thing your out is the cost of the DVD you used to burn it to. regards
  20. thank's jimmsta, great work on it id host it, but... i only have 6 mb left on my site thanks so much though!
