  1. lol i couldnt watch either of them, but i have seen it before. man, i couldnt believe hes like that, hes probably just a spoiled little kid thats probably all it is. iv gotten mad at my computer too before, but not to the extent this kid got to the worst i did was smack the table
  2. by far that would be the best idea, if the computer does what you need and its just a case issue, why fix something that isn't broken?
  3. i know theres a personal webserver on windows 98, but... hehe... does it work? the reason i ask is, i have a compaq armada 1700 with win98 on it. i was thinking that because this computer is just sittin and not being used, why not load up my website on it and host the thing on there. i just want the pages to be hosted there, and my files hosted on tripod still. but still, i have a decent internet upload speed for just plain text. anyway, id like to host the files there. i just wanted to know if its possible under windows 98. if i posted this in the wrong area, im sorry, i thought this would be the best place. thanks for reading.
  4. usually what youll want to do when your unzipping a file with the XP compressed folder wizard, is when you get to the second page itll have a question asking where you want to extract the files to, in that little text box type something along the lines of "C:\TempDir" (change TempDir to whatever you want) this will extract the files to a folder on the root of your harddrive (which you can view by clicking Start ---> My Computer ----> Local Disk (C:) ) in that folder will be all the files that were in the zip file and then you can do whatever it is you need to do with them. thats pretty much the easiest way. id tell you another way of doing everything, but im unsure of how your computer is setup because everyone has a different way of doing things. hope that helps you out. -brian
  5. i think your best bet would be to try and find a used computer. maybe around a PIII 800 or so, then ask the person there if the motherboard would handle that many hard drives at that size. as for 1gb of ram, im sure than any motherboard made in the last 4 years will handle just that. my board is about 4 years old now and it supports 2gb's of ram. the 120gb hdd's should be read by any motherboard in the last 4 years as well. any processor that isnt 64bit and/or dual core, should work with windows 98, its just hardware is in the computer, sound, video and anything else you need. so if you look for a PIII or maybe even a P4, or try the AMD route and go with say an AMD athlon XP of any speed, you can run 98 on those CPU's. i have an amd athlon XP 1800+ and i ran 98 on it (took 10 seconds to boot) i later went back to XP though because its just a better OS for faster computers (that or 2000 pro) anyway, im sure you can do it, its not that hard of a project. lol XP doesn't need as much as a lot of people think, im running XP on a 7 year old PII 366 and i find it great for a laptop. runs fast, and its efficient. but meh, thats just me. but anyways, good luck -brian
  6. react os is starting to look very promising, i think im going to have to try it again. i used version 0.2.8 or w/e and it wouldn;t load on my laptop, so i might try 0.3.0rc 1 soon. plus the lack of WGA and anything else bloated into XP is a major plus lol the first time i went to the site it said in one of the screenshots "flash wont work in react os" thats another plus lol.
  7. all the more reason to revert back to it if they do this dumb WGA thing. XP is getting older now, why do they care anymore? besides, MS is worth billions anyway. i know it sounds like im justifying the criminals, but think about it, how much would it cost to have 4 desktop computers, and maybe 2 or 3 laptops in a house all running legit copies of XP? i know how much itll costs, im doing it right now, and ill tell you, its way to much. i was looking into doing it, but it was way to expensive for my dad to justify doing it, so he just runs 98 on a few of the desktops (which are way to fast for 98 imo) they need XP but at $130 for each computer, its not worth it. ill just stick with a lower operating system till XP gets a lil older then ill goto it. who else agrees that XP is too much? for an upgrade version too.
  8. if i recall correctly, didnt windows 98 have an unattended thing on the disc? ill look and see what i can find. edit found it, its called "Microsoft Batch 98" with it, you can make an unattended install for windows 98. all it does though is just allows you to set the options you want, the Key and some other things. its worth a look, it might help you. ps, its in "D:\tools\reskit\batch" replace D with your cd rom drive letter.
  9. i liked windows 95, didnt really hit the internet seen until about maybe 2001 or so, then i started off with IE 5 in windows 98se. i always ran 95 on my computer, (it was a Pentium 200 with 32mb of ram) and i always liked it. it was plain, simple and fast. plus, i picked it up really quickly, within 2 weeks of gettin the computer, i knew how to reload it and stuff like that. and i was 10 my first computer was a dell laptop that had a broken screen (lamp was dead and there were 2 black lines across the display. my dad cut a whole in the monitor and shaun a like in to light the display up lol) a luscious 386 20 mhz with 2 or 4 mb of ram, and a 60mb hdd WOO! fast! plus it ran 3.1, so it was boring crap for me. got it when i was 7.
  10. it only takes a few piraters to ruin it for the rest of us. i myself and running 3 copies of xp all legit. 2 on my laptops (both dell OEM) and a retail version on my desktop. i reload my computers quite a bit (its a matter of just messing around ) i wouldnt be surprised if the thing thinks my key has been used a number of times and isnt legit or w/e anymore, but i dont have any problems with windows updates. but with my luck im sure this thing if and when it comes out, will shut down my computer. then ill get irritated and finally either switch to linux, or downgrade back to 2000 pro (provided i can find my copy of it or even 98 ) MS takes something simple, then complicates the hell out of it. MS is making sooo much money, they can lower the price of XP home and pro down to like 10 bucks and still make a profit. for that price, id buy 5 copies just to have. theres no reason for a copy of XP to cost 100's of dollars. not the way i see it anyway. thats my story and im sticking to it
  11. yah the ram really did help. XP ran alright with 128, but with 256 (later 384) it doubled performance (then trippled) so really this computer probably handles XP as well as maybe a 500 with 128 or even 256 mb of ram. the program rocket dock says it needs a 500 minimum, but im running it on here with the high quality setting and its fine. so does that mean it runs like a 500? lol i doubt it, just a decently nLited version of windows i dont think the HDD did much for performance anyway, i originally had a 12gb in this computer , then i upgraded to a 40 and didnt notice much difference. it might have been a little bit quicker, but not too noticable for me. heres a movie of my laptop booting up, only thing that i removed was the useless DELL logo thing at the begining (that adds 30 seconds to the darn boot time ) i7k.wmv
  12. well, its a Pentium II 366Mhz with 384Mb of RAM ATi Rage Pro with 8mb and a 40GB hdd. the computer performs faster than you think. im running XP pro on it, and it takes less than 30 seconds to boot up. so its very fast for its age. i got the computer free to boot too, so its a double bonus maybe your just use to a much faster computer? idk, but this computer isnt a piece of crap by any means. with its 15 inch display and nice size hdd, its a great all around computer for me. 98 was the real draw back on this computer. XP runs so much better. i like it. ps, if you still have that laptop and dont want it, send it my way
  13. thanks, i downloaded RK launcher and i like it , just its a little slow on my laptop. so ill stick to Rocket Dock on my laptop and ill put RK on my desktop later on today when i get home. i been looking for a program much like that, so thanks again!
  14. zxian, i downloaded rocket dock and i must say, i really like it. thanks! heres my lapotp's screen now (identical to my desktop, except my desktop is a higher resolution)
  15. i guess what it really comes down to is whether or not you know how to use a computer. if you do, then you wont have any problems. i always had problems with 98 on some computers, others it was ok. my armada 1700 is fine with 98 fe or SE, my inspiron 7000.... ooo thats another story, its weird that the computer was designed for it, but still, it runs bad with 98. taking long than XP to boot up is un-acceptable. so im just going to stick with what OS runs best on what hardware. my armada 1700 will stay 98, my other 2 laptops will stay xp (both are inspiron 7000's) and my desktop is and always will stay XP. even when vista comes out, im not going to use it, iv used the beta, and i dont like where they're taking it. but thats another story all in itself.
  16. thanks for the link zxian. lol kool background sibob. otherwise, kool desktop though.
  17. look at the icons along the bottom of his screen. thats what im talking about, the one with the giant firefox logo : /
  18. hey np i gotta question though, how did you get that little bar at the bottom of the screen like the mac os? is that one of the stardock programs?
  19. 98 is alright for some people, but for a lot of people, it was a terrible os and always will be. deal with it. and NT wont run on a lot of modern hardware? BS. XP and 2000 and 2003 are way better, sure they dont run as fast as 98, but meh, id rather have a little bit slower of a computer than a fast one thatll just be dumb and crash when you plug in a slightly newer piece of hardware. my card reader doesnt even work in 98, so the hell with it i say. 98 can go to hell, im sorry i ever purchased the thing. im happy i got XP pro. so much better of an operating system, MS did it right when they started the NT system. also, i said if you have a modern computer, then why not run 98. hell im running it on my 366 PII and it runs better than 98 (which it was designed for...)
  20. could it just be windows 98 doesnt like handling stuff like that? it always was a mem hog. dont wanna sound rude, im just saying.
  21. lol, when and if you find the guy, you should kick him in the nuts. thatd be funny.
  22. thats gotta be my favourite. i like space themed things. or even anything to do with space.
  23. lmao so true AHHH! windows 98 car!! *runs away* nah im just messing with ya, windows 98 is great for older computers. but, if you have a more modern computer, why not run XP? but if you wanna run 98, more power to ya, its a good os for people who know it and stuff, XP is more user friendly for the "newer" people to computers. computers are getting more useful in and out of the work place, so more and more people are jumping onboard the PC bandwaggon and getting to know XP is nicer to look at than getting to learn 98. for me, i found 98 fairly easy, but at times i had a few problems. xp was built on the earlier OS's, they have pretty much the same UI for the most part, and stuff like that. so thats really where theyre similar. the usability of a 98 machine and an XP machine have more in common than you think. XP was built on the fixes of the mistakes in 98 and earlier. everything above is just me talking, it could be the booze or drugs, idk. lol -brian
  24. i was thinking of trying Vector again, but i dont know how to use linux at all, so i doubt i can get any of my hardware working in it. i could play around for a bit and maybe figure it out, but with my luck, i'd go to reload it and forget it all lol. anyway, ill keep playing around. i like Xubuntu so far, its just slow to boot, thats all.
  25. i have a piece of information that might be of use. here in canada, (i dont know if itll be the same in america) but some of the wireless routers and cable modems dont seem to want to communicate with each other. the only chance we had in getting it to work was to change either of the pieces of hardware. its weird, but thats what happened to my neighbors up the street. they called me and asked what was wrong. so i went and looked at it. the cable modem wouldn't get an IP address from the ISP for some reason. so we changed the modem and that worked. maybe there was something wrong with the modem, but i doubt it because i hooked it up to my laptop through my nic card and it worked fine. i think they just weren't compatable. maybe the modem was too old? i dont know for sure. but that might be an obstacle you have run into. i hope you can get it working though. -brian
