hey guys, i was wondering if anyone might have any ideas on a small problem im having. i have obtained a hard drive from a laptop that needed a new drive and its having problems being recognized. i can use the drive in one of my external hdd caddies (the other 2 caddies i have dont recognize it) and it also works fine in a compaq armada 1700 laptop. if i put the drive in my dell inspiron 7000, in the bios for main hard drive it says "none" i have used FDISK with the /MBR command to no avail. it just doesnt work. iv looked all over the internet for any information and still nothing has stuck out at me. the model is HDD2190, its a Toshiba out of a HP pavilion or Compaq presario, im not sure what model it was, but the sticker on the top says "Compaq Computer Corp." so it could be either company. (its a fairly new computer too, P4) if i cant get it to work, ill just put it back in my external caddy and use it as storage (it still works for storage so thats fine and its quite reliable actually) any help is appreciated, thanks for reading.

Defragmenting your Hard Drive(s)

guys, i got a question about defraging. i used DG-Defragmenter and "disk usage before degragmentation" in the below pic was that, then after defragmentation part was after a windows defrag. why does it keep putting that block back? i dont care, i just want to know. -
i dont think youll be able to rebuild the original install, although you might be able to, i just dont have enough practice with this. what i would do, is load the new drive up with XP and copy back all your data and back it up on a cd or dvd. if you have a password on your account and cant access the files, let me know about that. i had some practice with that from a friends dead laptop. ill see if i can find the software i used again. regards

Defragmenting your Hard Drive(s)

i defrag once a week. i know i should probably do more than that, but my computer never takes more than 10 minutes to defrag all of the drive (about 15gb) i dont do much on my computers anyway, i have all my music and a few programs i run, but thats about it. so i guess it doesn't need as much of a defrag. my laptop has about 3.5gb used, so a defrag on that is never more than 5 minutes so i do it daily. plus its just a usage factor, my laptop gets used much more than my desktop. my desktop is started about 2 or 3 times a week, my laptop is about 4 or 5 times a day o_O so the usage factor is also something to consider. -
do you mean windows vista?

well, they could be corrupted. but as long as you didnt overwrite anything on the drive, it should be able to recover the files. im not sure of the file names, but they should remain the same, although they may not. it really depends on the program that you use. i used a program to recover files off of a floppy disk, and they didnt retain the original file names. if you need anymore help, feel free to contact me on msn or aim or yahoo for more in depth help.

thats about the fastest speed your going to get on dialup. the maximum download speed i ever got was just over 3kb/sec. iv gone to hi-speed recently so i dont have dialup anymore, but i still remember that that was the highest speed your really going to get. you wont really be able to connect at 56kbps even though they say that the modems are capable of it. its like usb 2, you wont hit the fastest throughput just because of other deciding factors. hope this helps, regards

thats a great verrsion of winamp for older computers or if you just dont need/want all the extra stuff. besides, it does what winamp 5.1 does, plays mp3's right?

i use iTunes for my music collection, i always hated apple, but then before i got my iPod i started using iTunes and i like it. its easy to use. i just like the way it organizes my music, all in one list. its better than Win media player in that respect. Winamp has that feature, but im not crazy about the look of winamp anymore. iv gone off it it anyway, regards

it all really depends on line condition. you dont want too much noise on the line. i had a problem like that here at my house where i could only connect at 33.2kbps, but then i made a passthrough switch that went directly to my main telephone line and i went up to about 48.4kbps and sometimes i could get 51kbps. so try having a direct connect to the phone line with no other wiring being used, that might help you. also, make sure that you have the fastest phone number. thats about all i can think off of hand, im sure theres other tweaks that some people know.

Where does one find the time to install once a week? i reinstall a lot too, but im a kid, so i have tons of time

around here you can buy a computer thats just around what you asked for , for about 150 bucks. but its a used computer. theyre usually an IBM deskpro or some other name brand, and they usually clock in at about 500mhz - 1ghz. a burner alone is still above 40 bucks. (mine was 75 and it was the second cheapest i could get at the time).

i kept getting some spam, but i dont think it was from MSFN. so all i did was block the email it used to send to me and i havent gotten anything in the past few days now. heres the email address i kept getting mail from: ****@madrid.com where * was a different thing everyday. i just blocked the @madrid.com thing in Outlook Express, and it just deletes anything like that from the server. i also changed my msfn password, but im not getting a new email just for this lol. it doesnt bother me as much. in no way would i blame MSFN for this. it was an accident, stuff happens. so , ill just deal with it in my own way. thanks msfn for at least ackknowledging it. i give you a lot of credit for that regards, cygnus i found a copy of the mail i was deleivered. this is also from a different email address now too, weird... ill be blocking this domain too. foodspam lol

i like xp pro, im using it on my dell inspiron and my desktop. my dell laptop is getting quite old and showing its age with some of the plastics starting to get brittle, but it still works perfectly fine and resonably fast for its age. i dont think i will be upgrading too soon, based on the fact i have no money lol. but when i have some money i might be getting a new laptop.

probably entirely true, or he's a spammer. itll be the same amount of time before he posts again

my pilot personal was doing that, then i opened it up and took out the memory card for a little while, put it back in after cleaning it, then started it up. then it worked. edit: oh, another thing, theres a ton of small ribbon cables that i hear have a tendency to pop out. open the III's up and re-insert all the ribbon cables, you never know that may help too. edit2: heres what you do with a palm iiic when it serves no useful purpose
