rockbox does say it supports AAC, but only upto 128kbps. it sounds as though you removed something in nLite under audio devices perhaps. i kinda did the same thing, i removed the windows xp sound drivers by accident . sound card in my laptop was hard to find the driver for. so i just remade my nLite cd. iv got an iPod nano, and i love having it. the software isnt crap, it works just fine. in fact, iv never had a problem with the software. iTunes doesn't lock up and my iPod doesn't lock up. i put iPod linux on it, but aside from being able to play movies on it, i didnt like it one bit. it was slow to play mp3's (i know its in beta and stuff, but still, its like its desktop counterpart, needs too much to run it properly) and i didnt like the interface they had for it. plus, i couldnt get ogg vorbis to play on it that was annoying. anywho, i like the iPod, thats my opinion, and i respect yours

it probably doesnt much matter, this is just my opinion and based on what an electronics expert i know said. dont leave a computer plugged in (atx motherboard) and not running. if the powersupply is powered up and not disipating the energy it creates, it damages parts on the board. they just either die, or blow up. they could even cause what happened here, but that looks more like a cheap power supply to me. if i were you, invest in a powerbar with a surge protector (i dont really think those help anyhow, but its probably a better thing to see on insurance) get one, plug your computer into it, then when your not using it power it down. that way everything is off. iv always had my computer on a powerbar and never had any problems with my power supply you probably already do that though, im not sure regards
-
i would say, pop in another power supply and see if that does it. maybe the power supply cant handle a load. a cd rom drive should power up and open and close the drive door with just power to it. i powered one off of a wall adapter when i was smaller and didnt understand too much and it worked. well, i could open and close the drive is all.

i still prefer amd, iv never liked intel. the only reason i have an intel PII in my laptop, is because the older intel's did work better than the older amds. but with the introduction of the Athlon chip, they had intel. i suspect that in the next few years, intel will either, produce a much faster chip than amd, or , it will go under. being a big company though, they may just survive on average sales. they may have to down size, but i think they will remain in the shadows for quite some time. i did a benchmark with a p4 computer and my desktop, and my desktop blew the thing outa the water. the p4 was a 2.0ghz, 512mb sdram, ati radeon 9600 mine: amd athlon xp 1800+, 512mb sdram , ati radeon 9200se mine encoded mp3s faster, ran games faster, booted faster, and the menu's when on the fade effect didnt stutter. i just wish i had the screenshot of the benchmark still, **** ext hdd

i sysed my d drive (which is the backup partition, 7.4gb) and copied all the files i needed onto it to restore the backup file, then included it in the list of operating systems. thats all i did, i know im missing something because i have found so many ways to do it on the net, but they dont explain in very well for a person like me to understand it. im not dumb when it comes to computers and stuff, its just all this talk about bootsectors and suff, goes beyond what i know in this department. iv had a dual boot setup with 98/xp and that worked quite well, but now, id like to just have one main partition for XP and then one backup to have an image of XP on. that way, if im on the road with my laptop and it decides to do something dumb, i just bootup into the restore partition and restore. 20 minutes later, im going again. thanks for the reply, T D.

i need to know how to add an MS-DOS boot partition to the boot.ini loader in windows XP. i want to have it so that when my computer is booting, it shows a list of operating systems for 3 seconds, allowing me to choose to boot to a dos prompt and start a restore of my drive (just incase it needs to be reloaded on the go). so far, i have the boot.ini file like this: [boot loader] timeout=3 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect D:\ = "Restore Windows XP" anyone know how to do this?

it would be more worth my while to try and get the drive working again. its not that old of a drive, 2 years old i think. i dont have any money to replace a drive like that, so rather than buying a new one, ill look on the net for answers. isnt that the purpose of MSFN? to try and save people money? in my case it did, i now have a working 40gb laptop hard drive to use in other computers. thanks again everyone
-
if you know what your doing on a computer, it can save you a lot of time and money, same goes with a car. you know how t ofix something, you dont have to take it to a mechanic (thank god for support forums lol) thanks to everyone who replied in here

yup, that tool worked, it took a long time to lo level it, but it went. and it worked. thanks again
-
thank you everyone, i got it working i did a low level format and it worked. its reading in my laptop and my dads. (my dad's happy, now he has a 40gb drive in his laptop thats much quieter than the 12gb he had). thanks everyone regards, cygnus

-
oh, question, does anyone know how to boot a Kubuntu install cd to a prompt? (i also have, ubuntu 5.1, xubuntu and frugalware .3)
-
i just found out what zero fill means, i think im going to do that instead, it seems safer. im going use a linux boot cd and do it in my compaq. i found out how to do it here @dirtwarrior, i didnt see your post before writing up my post. im going to do a zero fill instead. sorry if i sounded like i was ignoring you.
-
thought so, where can i find that, would it be on the label on top, or would i have to search on the net? edit : whats zero fill?
-
what details would i need to know to procede with a low level format?

Defragmenting your Hard Drive(s)
prx984 replied to Shindo_Hikaru's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
iv never had a hard drive fail on me. not for anything. i defrag a lot, most times daily. my dad has a 1.2gb hard drive that he bought back in 1997, and he used that computer a lot and defragged a lot, everyday. the drive is still going strong. i really dont beleive that defragging will damage the drive. the worse thing i have had happen with a drive wasnt even my fault, the owner of another computer killed a drive and i have it now (but it still works as storage) other people may have different cases though. iv never had a hard drive fail on me though. -
Illegal Pre-Made Windows Setup -> Legal Windows Setup
prx984 replied to Slycer's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
not only is it illegal, but the downloaded iso's could contain very bad virus, or trackers. do not download anything like this, just as a precaution for safety, and your own butt. you get caught doing this sstuff, your going to get in big trouble. just use nLite and WPI and a lot of the other programs here, and make your own Custom XP install CD. nothing will be better than a custom tailored cd for yourself. -
iv formatted it multiple times and i have even switched between file systems (ntfs and fat32) i have an external hdd caddy for 2.5 inch drives, but i dont have an internal drive connector. i have formatted it multiple times within the armada 1700 too. im out of ideas on this. could there be a possibility that the drives boot sector or the volume information is just messed up? could a virus damage it beyond recovery or to the point that the drive just needs to be replaced?

Defragmenting your Hard Drive(s)
prx984 replied to Shindo_Hikaru's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
just wanna ask a question on that, would a healthy drive just crash all of a sudden? if so, what could be a main cause of this? sudden electric overload, maybe a power failure when shutting the drive down? -
the original computer was a p4 hp or compaq (unsure) and the owner of the computer asked my dad to take a look at the computer because it would no longer boot. so we took a look at it, tried re-install the OS (xp pro) it copied the files to the drive, and after the first stage, just wouldnt but up into the gui part of the install. it just sat at the black screen before the boot logo. we took the drive out and put in a new drive (20gb hitachi) and it worked. so we bought a new drive for the guy, and traded drives because the original one worked in my external caddy, and just asked for a few bucks because we couldn't use the drive in any of our laptops. anyway, the drive works as storage, but it just wont boot. in the compaq armada 1700, it boots and it works fine. but in my dell laptop and my dads (latitude cpi) it just shows up as NONE in bios. im at a total loss with all of this. is there anyway to do a thorough scan of the drive to see if theres anything damaged, or if theres a virus in it? (thats what i suspect as the person that original owned the computer has no computer knowledge) cygnus
