  1. No, it's an attempt to update Microsoft's database. At least that's what it looks like to me (SpyNet Alternative?). And "improved" by including MRT.
  2. For me, the cleanest way was to use the registry: http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-scancode-map.html If stuck, helped by the program: http://www.groovypost.com/reviews/keytweak-windows-8-keyboard-remapper/ GL
  3. Paranoia is the healthiest desease. You (may) live longer if you have it.
  4. Kill that useless TDR. In my opinion, it creates way more problems than it solves.
  5. For me, funnier are the reviews, or the ratio of satisfied customers in them...
  6. Reading... (also the previous parts)
  7. Why isn't this getting more attention? I think it is a great way to achieve stopping of telemetry. Why I think that? If all telemetry traffic goes through the RSVP protocol (which, as far as I know, was not present in Win<10), that gives us a simple single kill switch. As far as I know, there is no other useful use of that protocol (no other application uses it), so killing it would leave no harm. But more investigation is needed how much of the undesired traffic goes through that protocol. And unfortunately, to quote Jaclaz, I'm not that crazy to install Win10, even for scientific purposes, so somebody else should investigate that.
  8. Here's what I have on those two locations and everything is working fine (Opera Presto, normall install a long time ago): GL
  9. Both problems seem to me like insufficient permissions during installation, resulting in incomplete install. Try installing as administrator and/or disabling UAC. The second one, corrupted download or also insufficient permissions. You can check the downloaded extension pack by unpacking it (twice!) with 7-zip. Sometimes I just overwrite the files in the installed directory with the unpacked ones and all is fine. GL
  10. It depends on the browser, I still mostly use Opera Presto, most other (modern?) browsers do not wait. I'm not sure if Opera still does, but there is no harm if blank images get served. I think it also helps with the geometry (layout) of the page, not to have the symbol of broken image(s). I am still not sure if it serves javascripts (empty text files?), there are several versions and documentation is slim.
  11. My hosts file is 7.132.667 bytes long and my computer is feeling fine. I keep old (expired) entries on purpose, you never know whether they'll resurect, and I doubt any useful site will come from that domain. I cumulatively add entries from MVPS and any other source I can find, convert to lower case, delete all comments, all illegal characters, sort, and delete duplicates. Everything works fine with the addition of one little tool that wasn't mentioned, and I think is essential for use of the hosts file, which is a webserver for serving dummy images and/or scripts. Otherwise, the browser just waits until the requests expire. One such tiny webserver is eDexter, there are others. About the DNS Cache, I've seen slowdowns of DNS Cache service around XP SP2 time (or before) and ever since I turn it off on every computer I own or am asked to 'optimize' for the following reasons: - DNS requests/responses are small enough and fast enough, so IMO there is no need for them to be cached. If a computer (or rather Internet connection) needs to have its DNS queries cached, it has much much bigger problems than that. - Same can be said for the argument of unnecessary taking up memory and potentially (in theory) causing crashes and slowdowns - longer code path. - I like to always keep it fresh (reflecting the current situation, not the situation of the time when it was cached), i.e. some website might have gone down or up in the meantime. 12. Can those big empty spaces be placeholders for ads?
  13. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html
  14. I have high hopes in Vivaldi as Opera's successor, but it's not ready yet. GL
  15. A longshot, but search the registry for "MaximizeApps" and set it to 0 or delete it. This behavior looks like that, maybe something has set it. GL
  16. A.K.A. pagefile.sys for Metro apps. Without further ado, this is how: REGEDIT4[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]"SwapfileControl"=dword:0After the reboot, Windows itself will delete swapfile.sys and from then on will act as it never existed. Pagefile.sys will still exist. No complaints in the Event Log.I haven't noticed any ill effects, Metro Control Panel still works (maybe, just maybe, it starts a tad slower). I don't have or use any other Metro apps. GL
  17. I think they are part of Indexing Service. I don't know whether NLite knows that. GL
  18. You need to find an old version of MPC Standalone Filters which works for your OS. I know that they dropped support for older OSes in the newer versions, but older versions worked. You need CDDAReader.ax (register it) and maybe another one (my memory is failing me). GL
  19. I had a computer (in fact, still have) where I could not get the signal from the UEFI on the monitor on the integrated card, neither with HDMI, nor through DVI (adapter). Discrete card worked. I suspect it was the monitor that didn't accept that particular signal.
  20. So you need just another command: wmic UserAccount where Name="Administrator" call Rename Name="NoelC"besides that one. GL
