  1. Package manager?!
  2. I forgot to mention the processor, its I7-2600K. So already three generations old, but it's holding very well because those generations didn't have many improvements in processing power, only in power saving. GL
  3. It's this one. Everything works, except maybe Virtu (I haven't bothered with it even on Win7; in fact, I put a graphic card and switched off Intel integrated gfx). USB 3 also works (Now I realized I haven't measured the speed), charging of phone with shut down computer also works, that's important for me. I didn't notice any degradation of performance of the SSD either, although there is no TRIM support in 2003. It's overcklocked to 4,6 Ghz and it's buttery smooth. Now I'm bragging. With adequate cooling, of course (Noctua). I've seen more BSODs on Win7 on this computer (dual boot) than on 2003. For most of them, I know what caused them (unpolished ATI gfx drivers and my tinkering). Both OSes are tweaked to the max (also removed components), but 2003 is noticeably faster in boot times, opening folders etc.. GL
  4. Yes, it is very possible. I have it installed and work daily on it* and I suspect many others have. In fact, IMHO it is the last generation for which XP drivers can be (easily) found. * Server 2003 to be exact (but of course drivers are for XP), and also I did a test installation of XP to see if it works. Yes, it worked.
  5. And if you look harder, you can find the file with the addreses in plain text (not containing the passwords) and check for yourself. I wouldn't trust a site to harvest BOTH my email address and my IP address. GL
  6. And they are attacked from the other side by smarthones which grow larger...
  7. Maybe you'll find something useful here. It was my (former) problem, yours is actually reverse. Sorry if it was already mentioned/known, I read most of the thread and didn't see it.
  8. mprove as in improving Windows and as in proving WinSXS can be cleaned, while continuing the tradition of (name forming of) nlite (and improving it). And is a synonym related word. GL
  9. Another vote for WLite. That is, if you reject KISSnLite.
  10. I abandoned Spyware Blaster because it made unsolicited changes to the Hosts file (I already manage it myself, and SB didn't like some things), and was getting slow and pointless... I never get infected because I use strict policy "don't install anything ever on a live system". I also heard about Web Bubba just now, and was aware of existence of Homer, but when (a long time ago) I tried to find out more about it, there was no detailed info about filetype. Maybe the situation has changed. GL
  11. I use eDexter. I'm interested in comparison between these tiny webservers because I can't seem to find detailed documentation about any of them - which are the filetypes they support (detailed list), javascript yes/no, any other scripts etc. GL
  12. To try to fix your problem: Set "Auto Disable Gigabit" to Disabled on all machines. Set "Speed and Duplex" to Auto on the problematic machine, then on other machines. I've seen both cases, when "Auto" prevents reaching full speed, or when full speed can be reached only on "Auto". After changing one setting, reboot (all machines + the switch + router, if any) and test. For general speed/optimization: Maximize with the arrow up both "Receive buffers" an "Transmit buffers". I haven't seen a machine in the last 20 years that had a problem with this, and the driver usually still sets the maximum conservatively. If not using Wake On Lan, disable "Shutdown Wake-On-Lan" "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on pattern match"; set "WoL & Shutdown Link Speed" to "Not Speed Down". If nothing works and still desperate, try disabling various Offload options. I had one case when one of them caused similar symptoms (the NIC not able to reach full speed). GL
  13. Have you toyed with power management options? If you haven't, do.
  14. Everything after Office 2003 (vba6) is significantly slower for computational tasks. But you have "security" [insert both real and air quotes here].
  15. @enxz, that "Open port, inbound" is connecting to a known location (assuming my computer is clean, with no malware), the connection is initiated by me, it's expecting only that traffic, it's not responding to unsolicited traffic (as far as I know, that's a feature of tcp/ip stack of any edition of MS Windows, regardless of the presence of first/third party firewall). Yes, I'm visible, but only to that site. If that site decides to hack me (a drive-by attack) it already is connected to me and knows my ip address and port, so stealth mode doesn't make a difference. I agree there is a statistical possibility for a hacker (man in the middle) to get lucky with this traffic (or to analyze ALL my traffic and craft something, but then I have enormous problem anyway), but that (theoretical) risk can not be avoided anyway. Even having the latest OS doesn't make a difference. Nobody is talking about that. The (part of the) discussion in this topic (lately) is whether "stealth mode" helps with port scanning, usually the first step of an attack. The second step would be identifying the OS of the target (and stealth mode helps against that too) and finding in a (theoretical) database of all possible vulnerabilites of all possible OSes in (theoretical) posession of the (theoretical) attacker. If any other (theoretical or otherwise) plan of attack is possible, excluding PEBKAC, and you know about it, please be so kind to explain it to us. GL
  16. I leave these three EventLogs enabled, plus Circular Kernel Context Logger, I don't remember why any more. GL
  17. I used DupKiller, but didn't find much use for it after I processed my folder of text files. GL
  18. 12. Switch to Message Signaled-Based Interrupts. GL
  19. Resurrecting this old thread... I tried this on Win7 before finding this thread and everything is smooth. Maybe the computers have gotten faster, the onboard audio is better, or the OS is smarter... No problems whatsoever on Win7 x64 and Realtek HD audio. Also inside virtualbox on the same machine (sandy bridge). Programs that play audio start noticeably faster, and that's enough for me. I used this: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioSrv]"DependOnService"=hex(7):52,70,63,53,73,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioEndpointBuilder]"Start"=dword:4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MMCSS]"Start"=dword:4To restore to original configuration: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioSrv]"DependOnService"=hex(7):41,75,64,69,6f,45,6e,64,70,6f,69,6e,74,42,75,69,6c,64,\ 65,72,00,52,70,63,53,73,00,4d,4d,43,53,53,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioEndpointBuilder]"Start"=dword:2 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MMCSS]"Start"=dword:2Now, if only I could do the same for NSI... I follow all the dependencies and all is seemingly well, but LanmanServer service commits suicide saying "there are no endpoints... GL
  20. explorer.exe, HelpPane.exe and fvenotify.exe aren't. Those you highlighted probably don't contain any icons.
  21. If OS>XP then FW=LookNStop Else FW=KPF2.1.5 Loop
  22. I knew that. I should have been clearer, I didn't know the HWID of the controller in IDE mode (but I had a fairly good guess with the reference to the BIOS). GL
  23. That's the part I didn't know.
  24. I think it should be Intel RST textmode driver v11.2.0.1006 WHQL (choose 32-bit or 64-bit depending on what XP you have) on Fernando's site found in the link in the first post of this thread. I have Z68 board and that's it. Check whether you have enabled AHCI mode in BIOS. *Edit: DEV_1C08 isn't present in the original .inf from Intel, so probably it won't work. Modified .inf might be needed. Look around Fernando's forum and ask there or here if someone can modify the .inf for you. Fernando provides a modified driver where other devices are added, but 1C08 isn't present there either. It should be very easy job for someone who has done it (I haven't ). GL
  25. You can try following the links to check if something modified them on your system or whether the URL responds. I delete them from my registry and that part isn't even displayed. GL
