Cannot get the latest TCMD FileInfo plugin to work on Win9x
GrofLuigi replied to Comos's topic in Windows 9x/ME
If it's any help, this is 64bit version seeing 32bit version: It works on Win7 and XP, but the 32-bit version sometimes exits silently. I don't have win 9x. Let me know if I can do anything to help you with testing or something. GL -
I think it just executes the .inf's, thus overwriting what is existing in the registry, but I have no hard evidence, so I didn't post before. GL

In the last three days, when I click on "mark all items as read", I'm getting the following error: www.msfn.org Driver Error There appears to be an error with the database. If you are seeing this page, it means there was a problem communicating with our database. Sometimes this error is temporary and will go away when you refresh the page. Sometimes the error will need to be fixed by an administrator before the site will become accessible again. You can try to refresh the page by clicking here «Return to the index

Did you investigate it further? I mean... did you ascertain what those changes mean? I assumed it's something like "last access timestamp" or probably the counterpart of Word's "store random number to improve merge accuracy" which: 1. I never quite understood how it works 2. I read somewhere is the exact opposite of what it says, as regards to privacy GL

Where does Office 2010 store the update uninstallers?
GrofLuigi replied to a topic in Microsoft Office
I see one in %windir%\installer. (.msp) It's the only one I've installed fully. All the others after that, I've unpacked with Universal Extractor and directly replaced the files. They're self-signed usually, so no problems. GL -
I've noticed this as well, a long time ago. File and folder date isn't modified, few bytes inside the file are. Excel 2003 does it, Excel 2010 doesn't. GL

reading/cleaning old floppy disks
GrofLuigi replied to Asp's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I think alcohol would destroy it (wipe off all magnetic particles, the whole magnetic layer). I know I wouldn't wipe a VHS tape with alcohol and expect to read it later at that spot. And, there IS a soft cloth inside a 3.5'' floppy. So what would I do? Keep trying to read it. Find another drive. Align the head? GL -
You need to either slipstream Intel SATA (AHCI) driver or run in IDE emulation mode (if the BIOS allows it). You can read most of the things you need to know about the first option in this excellent topic (if you haven't already). You need 32bit Intel RST textmode driver v11.2.0.1006 WHQL driver. The second option will allow you to install standard XP from CD without any modification, but you lose some speed. Whether you notice it or not, it's debatable, but since you have a SSD it's always better to have AHCI. GL

There is also 2808679 (which replaces 2661254). GL

XP SP3 added some new languages, and I thing settings vary depending on the SP level of the image. You need to re-do your session starting from scratch (before that, only integrate SP3 and that will be your base image). GL

Win 2k3 - Cant view events, services, device properties
GrofLuigi replied to subhramani's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I've seen such a thing when some of the most important system DLLs have been damaged or unregistered. The first step should be SFC /scannow. Then maybe re-register some of the DLLs in system32 (this is unlikely to help, but who knows)... I remeber seeing a Microsoft KB article about this, but can't find it now. If you're desperate, maybe try something like this? (Only as a last step). GL -
Automatically Select to Hibernate instead of Shutdown
GrofLuigi replied to mikep56's topic in Windows XP
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\Shutdown] "HibernateAsDefault"=dword:1 "ShowHibernateButton"=dword:1 Also for current_user. Is this what you're looking for? It has been mentioned in this forum before. *Edit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893056 GL -
Registry Peculiarities and Solutions
GrofLuigi replied to CharlotteTheHarlot's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
Thanks GL. Please feel free to throw these keys into a comment here so other people can check for the same errors in their own registries. I can't because I've corrected them now. When I get to install them another time, I will. It happened on XP and Server2003 (many, many times, every time I installed them, it was not a single case), while not on Win 7. They were inside multistring values, listing the paths to dlls and/or other files that got installed into WinSXS. As I said, in one line (the path) there could be several good (signle) backslashes and one double. Or in the multistring, few good lines and one bad. And there were too many of them to list, but regedit search could find them. GL -
Registry Peculiarities and Solutions
GrofLuigi replied to CharlotteTheHarlot's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
VisualC 2005 and 2008 Redistributables created* multiple entries with double backslashes (while in the same string, same line, single backslashes were also present). I am sure that is a bug. Yes, I also search regularly for \\ in the registry. * I haven't checked the very latest, but all versions until SP1 MFC update did that, and I haven't installed later version. GL -

If you were overclocking, the answer to bugcheck 0x124 would definitely be add more vcore. Maybe the power supply is weak/weakened? What have you tried so far? (which browser, hardware acceleration...)?

Word Docs Switch to Read-Only After Several Saves in Word 2003
GrofLuigi replied to mitchsc's topic in Microsoft Office
Checking paths: They are usually truncated, so you click 'modify' and navigate around to see where it is, but don't actually change the path. Afterwards, maybe, check with Windows Explorer or file manager what's going on there (permissions, read-only, etc.) Also check addins: Also, if you're not sure, don't change anything, just check if there is something out of ordinary there. Maybe post a screenshot. GL -
Word Docs Switch to Read-Only After Several Saves in Word 2003
GrofLuigi replied to mitchsc's topic in Microsoft Office
May be mentined before, but the first steps for troubleshooting Word are: - deleting normal.dot (it will be recreated, you lose few settings) - disabling addins - checking the paths for templates, etc. in Options GL -
is there a quick way to "freeze" CPU speed setting?
GrofLuigi replied to ihateusernames's topic in Windows 7
I would try Throttle Stop and set max multiplier to lower value. GL -
I can't start Minesweeper, from Procmon tracing it looks like it asks for CLSID {E77CC89B-7401-4C04-8CED-149DB35ADD04} which is Parental Controls (as I found out from Google). I deleted it long time ago as I'm a sole user of my computer and don't need it and don't want it back. Any way to circumvent this restriction or patch it? Is there more information somewhere about this? I searched and it's not mentioned anywhere. GL
