  1. I agree. With the exception that Jetico Personal Firewall is good too. I recommend Jetico Personal Firewall 1x for people that want lean Windows installations. I had dependency issues with Comodo Personal Firewall under Windows 2000 Pro with the FDV fileset. So I need another OS setup to test Comodo on.
  2. No, I dont have a router, all my ports are open No software firewall, no hardware firewall why risk it? its not worth it for the sake of 15-20mb extra ram usage from a firewall or AV, i could understand if we were all on p100's with 32mb ram but come on its 2007 and 2GB of ram is the norm these days! Probably are going to get malware, if not already. Malware would sneak in easily! Future rootkits may easily find their way without you noticing. That's very smart!
  3. OT, but I have something I want to share. Is anybody here familiar with synaesthesia? Here's a link about synaesthesia: (also spelt synesthesia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia
  4. I'm with bledd on this one. That probably is because you're behind a NAT router or a NAT modem (a modem with NAT built-in). NAT eliminates the requirement of having a software firewall. Bet you that when you go to grc.com and run Shields Up! that at least the majority of the ports are stealthed!
  5. With System Restore, if the files weren't there on the date that you told it to roll back to, they will be deleted! That also means that if an application wasn't installed before the time of the restore point, the application won't be there!
  6. Wasn't it Sony who bought Connectix?
  7. VTel, based in Springfield, Vermont possibly is the king daddy of Vermont ISPs. Last year, AFAIK, they had an advertisement of 24Mbit! That's with DSL. In the same house I'm in, can easily get 4 MBit, if not more! But when I tested it back on February 20, 2007, I appeared to possibly been going at 24 MBit! On a Windows 2000 PC that was being worked on, Internet Explorer 6 downloaded at least nearly as fast as the HDD transfer rate!
  8. A screeching noise sounds like a hard disk drive failure.
  9. That is a strange bug. I only saw that issue with HFSLIP *and* HFCLEANUP. I can't recall seeing that issue with nLite.
  10. That sounds more like a bad overclock. The temps may be too high for the overclock to work properly. Sorry. It's likely that the temps are sky high! (I mean around 160F (70C) , if not 180F (90C or around there) or around there!)
  11. It is corrupted! Tip, you can test hotfixes with 7-Zip. If 7-Zip displays "X is not supported archive" then it's corrupted!
  12. Sometimes, the web browser will lie about the download being finished! If the file isn't at least 10 MB, declare a download failure!
  13. Even for a Windows NT-based OS, including Windows Vista, that probably is true. Microsoft is known to keep legacy code for a long time in their operating systems!
  14. No IE7 for Windows 2000, (Officially announced by MS) however, Firefox seems work fine at my win2k system. The photo loading of Firefox clearly slower than IE6, get you a big X before the photo shows. Not like IE6, freezing up during the launch, and show photos all at once later. Since i intend to stay put at Win2K for next several years, now i am actively seeking replacement. Miranda messenger may be a good replacement to MSN messenger. ^__^ Enable HTTP pipelining. That will make photo loading faster. Easily by 3 seconds! By: Typing "about:config" then look for: network.http.pipelining Then change the "false" to "true" then close Firefox and reopen Firefox.
  15. Did it ever give you this BSOD: ***Hardware malfunction. Please contact technical support.*** (or similar) If you did, please check the jumpers on your motherboard, if the motherboard has jumpers for onboard devices. Then check the jumpers for PCI cards that have them, if any does.
  16. That's a known issue with some motherboards. I saw that issue occur only when my Chaintech CT-7AJA2E motherboard had all of the 3 SDRAM slots used. I only saw that issue on that motherboard when I changed the SDRAM configuration from 2 128 MB to 3 128 MB, from 256 MB to 384 MB.
  17. That's a confirmed issue with Athlon 64-based processors and Winpooch, if Winpooch intercepts a command. DEP probably won't get triggered if Winpooch didn't block any requests. If you have the above configuration, DEP has been known to close Explorer.exe or another legit Windows component!
  18. A messed up HDD listing and data loss sounds like likely a bad cable connection. Make sure that the SATA IDE cable is in all the way and try again. Also, with a bad cable connection, expect IDE parity errors in the system event log. Also be on the lookout for the dreaded "Delayed write failed" error message when copying files.
  19. DirectX 10 is built in to Windows Vista, is included with Windows Vista. There's no "installing" it. It's not like DirectX 9 with Windows 2000.
  20. Sorry, it's hard to get another motherboard, processor chip and RAM, besides, at least 12 hours of Prime95 testing is required to check for defects or compatibility problems whenever you upgrade a PC. Probably is going to cost at least around $200. On a different topic, I wish that I can get myself a Core 2 Duo and a super motherboard to go with it, but I'm afraid that it's gonna cost at least around $400, even when I use my existing HDDs! Because I require a brand new video card, too!
  21. With Internet Explorer 6, it's even worse, it will go ahead to install Flash without permission and thus with 56k, it makes me wait virtually forever! It punishes me for not having Flash, just because of an ad on the web page!
  22. The first thing I would check for is dust in the heatsink. Also, if you're overclocking the processor, please increase the Vcore and try again. BTW, I recommend Prime95.
  23. When I'm following the instructions from MSDN for setting a software restriction policy, Windows XP is ignoring me, notepad.exe, in this example keeps on opening anyway!: http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs314&d=07145&am...ware_Policy.jpg Update: It's working now. The solution was the remove the pathname and use filename only! Why did MSDN mention the pathname, too then?
  24. I didn't have that problem with the PCI underclocked to 30 mhz with my Asus A7V8X-X, which is Via KT400-based. It was rock stable without touching any latency settings! I gotten the same error before, on my MSI 845E Max and Northwood 2.4B, simply because of my FSB OC'ing. Likely because of the RAM latencies. I saw that error occur with one of my PC2700 DDR SDRAM modules OC'ed to at least 160 mhz and at 2.5-2-2-6. I think that mine required being loosened to 2.5-3-3-7 when beyond 156 mhz.
