actually it isn't quite that simple in implementing the new security fixes for Win98/ME since MS has been used to working on security fixes for W2k/XP/2k3 for many months now. I have been told recently by MDGx that the 888113 & 891711 updates for Win98/ME have now been posted at Windows Update and he gave me the links to download the patches. Better late than never but now the MS05-002 & MS05-015 updates for Win98/ME are now available.

Read MS article 197739 on the Different Advanced Power Management States: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;197739 this article applies to Win98 & ME only. for those using Windows XP, here's their version of the Different Advanced Power Management States article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;308535 for those using Windows 2000, see this article on how to set Win2k into using Hibernation mode: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;308098 if there are apps that interfere with hibernate, I close them and I can leave Windows Explorer open before I can go into hibernate mode. I don't believe that crap from DjLizard's quote! maybe he's using an unreliable PC that can't handle power management features. I used to own an NEC machine that has Win98se (though is uses APM instead of ACPI). gave it to my aunt several years ago. Suspend is now called Standby in Win98 fe/se. Standby works well under that old Win98se machine as well as on the newer, faster WME/WXP machines I have. randiroo76073, if you want to know what hibernate does, get a laptop computer that has pre-installed XP on it.

Hotfixes Remaining For Gape's Collection
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
ok sybesma, FixItMad has finally responded in another forum thread that he got the Q246615/Q246817 win98se patch. -
TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH SOLDIER1ST! HIBERNATE IS A VERY USEFUL FEATURE, FAR BETTER THAN SUSPEND AND FAR BETTER THAN SHUTTING DOWN AND TURNING ON PC AFTER THE SHUTDOWN! Unfortunately, Win98se allows hibernation ONLY on ACPI-based laptop/notebook computers and NOT desktop computers. If you want hibernation on an ACPI-based desktop machine, upgrade to WinME or WinXP. There's no way to add the hibernate feature on a desktop PC using Win98 SE. Hibernate shuts down the PC as normal but when you turn on the PC again, it will return to your desktop exactly as you left it. Be aware that there are some apps and devices that can prevent you from entering either StandBy or Hibernate power management modes. You'll have either disable or remove those problem apps or devices in order to use the power management functions. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It truthfully is useless. Even if you're a power user. You're far better off just saving your projects and shutting down normally than wasting space with "hibernate". Hibernation is a hog in many ways. This came from a true expert technician, notice the first thing he says to disable on an XP machine. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Disabling hibernate in XP? pathetic, Tarun! soldier1st & Tarun, look up the word "hibernate" in the Windows help file in Win98se or whatever version of Windows you use. click on Start, then click on Help and from the Index tab, type in hibernate. Hibernation a hog? not on my machines that use WinME and WinXP. hibernate doesn't use much space unless you are using a relatively small HD or partition. One good reason to use WinME (aka. Win98 TE) is its built-in hibernate feature. I NEVER disable hibernation on my brother's laptop computer that has pre-installed XP. Microsoft made some improvements to the power-management features so that Hibernate is possible on both desktop & laptop PCs that are ACPI-ready and the Windows OS used is either Win2000, ME or XP. Hibernate used to be called "suspend to disk" because it saves the system state onto the hard drive instead of saving it to memory.

i guess the vmm32.vxd problems do happen when installing sp2rc1 from a different drive. hopefully Gape will fix this in RC2 or whatever release before the final one.

follow up on MS Java and Sun Java: the Yahoo! Games web site can work with either MS Java VM or Sun Java plugin. Either one is required to play online games at Yahoo Games. see this help page on installing or enabling Java: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/games/games-09.html

that's understandable, FixitMad. so have you gotten the Q246615 patch from Microsoft? if so, can you email it to me. Click on my username to send me email. I only need that one.

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
yup, those 1Gb memory chips costs a few hundred bucks. i have found a kingston memory module compatible for your pc at the bestbuy.com web site [1gb, ddr pc2700], regular price is around $250 but sale price is about $190. for all those who make posts here on this thread might want to check out either the CircuitCity.com site or BestBuy.com site and search for memory modules for desktop/laptop computers. click on the 'Store Locator' link at either site to find a local Best Buy or Circuit City store near your area. -
note to robandjeanne: are you sure your two desktop PCs and laptop PC are really using Win98 SE? Open a DOS prompt by typing command in the Run dialog box and type ver to display the Windows version. that will display the Windows version. do this in all of your machines. if it says Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 then it is really Win98 FE and should upgrade to Win98 SE. if it says Windows 98 version 4.10.2222 then it is really Win98 SE and the W98se service pack should work.
-
if your wife's PC is using Win98 SE, the Win98se SP should not interfere with the Microsoft System Recovery tool. I would suggest running Sys recovery first to get things set in order and then install the Win98se SP when you are done restoring all the important data files on your wife's computer.

Hotfixes Remaining For Gape's Collection
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Gape has recently modified his 'needed updates' list page: http://exuberant.ms11.net/neededupdates.html to reflect that he has all the w98se updates needed. whatever w98se hotfixes that are left out in v2.0 should be included in v2.1 of W98SE SP. hopefully 2.0 final should be ready right before the start of spring, which is in late March. -
Of course could cause problems, anything could in a M$ program But i am always using different language type of dll, sys, and ini files (english, and hungarian). As I know only the language is the different in these files, so the only thing which could happen, is I will get some messages in english instead of hungarian. Using English SP on my Hungarian Win98SE is the same than using any other english hotfixes, system files right? But please correct me if I am wrong. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Um, I'll let Gape answer your question. I'm still not comfortable in mixing system files with different languages. Gape might have a better response than what I have.

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
nope. none that i know of randiroo76073. be sure that you have purchased the correct memory sticks for your mobo. check with your mobo manual to see what type of memory chips it can use before buying. -
Tearing my hair out over memory problems!

Follow up on types of memory chips-- Assuming users are using desktop computers and not laptop computers, DDR memory chips like the PC2100 kind that my friend's computer (which uses AMD M825g Motherboard) are 184-pin sized modules. The memory chips that my computer and my brother's computer (which are PC 133 & PC 100 SDRAM chips) are 168-pin sized modules. That means DDR RAM chips are a little longer than those older PC100/PC133 SDRAM chips and will not fit on the memory slots on our computers. and thus DDR memory chips aren't supported on the PCs we have. if I wanted to use DDR PC2100 SDRAM modules, I'll have to get a new PC or new motherboard that can accept DDR memory chips. -
May I get a copy, please? Please click the E-mail link at this page. Many thanks in advance. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Forget it, MDGx. FixItMad isn't responding. I'll ask someone else to ask for the Q246615 update. no, TomAce. You need to use exact language version of SP 2.0 for your localized version of Win98se. English SP 2.0 is for English Win98se only. you need to get Hungarian version of SP 2.0 for Hungarian language edition of Win98se. Installing the SP that is from a different language than your Win98se system can cause problems.

well Gape I was able to ask for the Q319571 keyb.com Win98 patch. let me know if you need it.
-
no prob., Mdgx. Q290831 patch for Windows ME was easy to obtain. the patch requires Q273017 patch to be installed first so remind users on your site to apply Q273017 and then Q290831. uh, yeah, like anytime now FixItMad. can you use your personal email address instead of your work address to send me Q246615 patch? i hope you are not busy.

Hotfixes Remaining For Gape's Collection
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
It only took one e-mail and one day to get Q192425. Just got it a few minutes ago. I will now request the last hotfix that Gape is looking for. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> FixItMad said he already got Q246615 hotfix. See '2.0 RC1' forum thread (page 9). I have Q319571 keyb.com patch. replaces Q247853 keyb.com hotfix. -
The latest cumulative IE 6 SP1 updates have the same files for Win98, 2000, ME, NT4 & XP SP1 BUT the Win2k/XP SP1 version of the IE6 SP1 KB867282 update uses a vastly different setup file (update.exe) to install IE6 SP1 files AND the update will no longer appear in the IE6 SP1 'About' dialog box. The Win98/ME version of the IE6 SP1 KB867282 update uses ieupdate.exe to install the files and does display the update in the IE6 SP1 dialog box. See question 'Why are the command line installation switches different for Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems for this release when compared to MS04-025: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer?' by expanding the 'Frequently asked questions (FAQ) related to this security update' section of security bulletin MS05-014: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS05-014.mspx Also see the 'Security Update Information' section of that article and expand all details. But least the updated files are exactly the same (meaning binarily identical) for IE6 SP1 for both versions of the updates. Reading MS article 867282: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867282 if you want the IE6 SP1 update to install the 'RTMQFE' version of the updated files add this registry entry in Registry Editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\QFEInstalled QFEInstalled should be a DWORD value and set it to 1. If QFEInstalled is set to 0 or does not exist, the IE6 SP1 update will install the 'RTMGDR' version of the updated files. If it is 1 or higher than the update will install the 'RTMQFE' version.

recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
nah MDGX. Q242941 patch is a near ripoff. has serenum.vxd file from Win98se. may be useful for Win95 and Win98 1st ed but totally useless for Win98se. -
Got what, MDGx? be more specific on what you were saying. FixItMad, are u ready to send Q246615 update. I have NOT received any email from you. are u sure you got the right email address? click on my username to email me.

not really Tihiy. Windows 9x/Me and Windows 2000 do NOT use same IE6 SP1 code with some IE6 SP1 files. look in the iew2k_1.cab, iew2k_2.cab and so on files and look in the ie_s1.cab, ie_s2.cab and so on files. you'll see what I mean. Why do Win98/ME users get "hanging" problems with IE6 Sp1 when deleting a very large number of files in Windows Explorer? And why do Win2000 users NOT get "hanging" problems with IE6 Sp1 when deleting large number of files in Windows Explorer. and besides, jasinwa, the IE 5.5 sp2 browseui.dll file version 5.50.4807.2300 has PLENTY of security flaws. I don't use that one if I were you. I get browseui.dll file from the 'other' KB867282 update (the IE 5.5 Sp2 kb867282 patch). The newer browseui.dll file from IE 5.5 Sp2 kb867282 update is version 5.50.4948.700 and fixes a lot of security bugs.

IE6 SP1 for Win98/ME will still be supported by MS until june 30, 2006. no more security patches for IE6 SP1 under Win98/ME will be made after that date. IE6 SP1 for Win2k sp3-sp4/xp sp1 will be supported until MS abandons support for Win2k sp3/sp4 and WinXP Sp1. Win2000 is supported 'til june 30, 2010. Luckily I have Firefox 1.01 (just released yesterday), Mozilla 1.75 and Opera 8.0 beta 1 installed on my brother's xp machine and on my WinME machine. Mozilla 1.76 will be out soon and so will the beta releases of Firefox 1.1 and Mozilla 1.8. Check the Mozilla.org site on upcoming releases.

don't know. only Gape knows that. if more updated Win98 SE files are added onto 2.0 RC, the longer the release of 2.0 final will be postponed.
