1. this might be going a little off topic, diskless, but you can also use scanreg /opt to compress the registry files system.dat and user.dat. smaller registry files mean better performance in win98se and less registry problems.
2. my copy of WinME setup DOES have WINME.WMV but does NOT play ANY welcome movie at all after settting up WinME. Ponch has a point, copy the WinME setup files onto the hard drive and then run ME setup from the HD. BTW - my edition of ME is an OEM edition, neither a retail full nor retail upgrade edition of WinME - AND I performed a CUSTOM install of WinME
3. ONLY for Win95 OSR2.x versions B and C. They don't work with the original or OSR1 [version A] editions of Win95. I did mention in the "unofficial and mcafee" thread in the Unofficial Win98 SE Service pack forum that the last version of McAfee VirusScan to run under Win95 is version 6.02. I kinda liked the older versions of VirusScan since they use less resources. I thought VirusScan 5.21 was the last one supported under Win95 but VirusScan Home Edition 6.02 and VirusScan Professional edition 6.02 do work under Win95. Version 6.02 requires a minimum of Win95B with Winsock 2 + IE 4.01 SP2. I've tested these versions on an old Win95c machine and they work. I did apply the latest DAT updates and used scan engine 5000 RC, not engine 5100. I mentioned in the "unofficial and mcafee" thread that scan engine 5100 does not work correctly under Win95. there were some unofficial updates I've made for Win95 SR2.x B/C such as the MSINFO95 pack and Unofficial Win95 SR2 URP [update rollup pack]. I made these in my own spare time. these updates are found on MDGx's web site.
4. please be more specific on what you are talking about, PageFault. Are u using Win95 SR2?

Flash 9

Get rid of Flash9b.ocx file from your PC, galahs! Flash 9 requires a PENTIUM 3 (like my 1.2 Ghz Pentium 3 machine) with 128Mb (or even 256Mb) of RAM. Flash 9 was not designed to be used on anything slower than a 500Mhz Pentium III processor. Use Flash 7 since your computer is really slow and can't properly handle the latest versions of Flash. And your old and slow Pentium pro 200 computer has 26 megs of RAM!! GEEEZ LOUISE! Put some high capacity RAM chips into your machine and give your old computer a lot more brainpower. Come on and start giving your PC a LOT more memory to handle those memory hungry programs out there. 128Mb or even 256Mb of RAM should do the trick.
6. soporific, I had this problem too but I found the problem. IE905495 was checking the WRONG files. If you look at the contents of the IE905495.exe patch in Wordpad, you'll see that it was looking for updated BROWSEUI.DLL, MSHTML.DLL, SHDOCVW.DLL, URLMON.DLL, WININET.DLL files, etc. It should have been looking for an older version (a 5.5x version) of the MSIEFTP.DLL file. Instead, if you don't have the latest Browseui.dll, Cdfview.dll, Mshtml.dll, Shdocvw.dll, Urlmon.dll, Wininet.dll files and you have less than IE 6.0 SP1, the IE905495 patch will produce that error message. Bottom line, the unofficial IE905495 patch was detecting the wrong kind of files to update when it should have been looking for the msieftp.dll file whether it exists or not. I had already notified MDGx about the problem and he told the_guy to revise the patch which he did. Download the updated IE905495 patch again here: http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE905495.EXE note to the_guy, I've noted in the ME service pack page if you have requested the KB925753 vbscript.dll 5.6.0.8832 hotfix.
7. he's busy, iWindoze. you may want to install MDAC 2.5 SP3 on Win98se, Eck. then install the 98se Service Pack. DONT install MDAC 2.8 SP1 because version 2.8 lacks some files that were featured in version 2.5. If you want to install MDAC 2.8 SP1, first install MDAC 2.5 SP3, then the 98se SP, the unofficial Jet 4.0 SP8 KB837001 update for Win9x/NT4 and finally MDAC 2.8 SP1.
8. I'm wondering if you have received the revised spupdate.inf and scr56.inf files I sent you a week ago. also can you include KB925753 vbscript.dll 5.6.0.8832 file into the SP?
9. Good thing many of us (BenoitRen, myself, etc.) are NOT going to touch Windows Vista or even upgrade to it. Windows Vista killed the HLP help format as WinHlp32.exe is no longer included there. Read the article here of how Winhlp32.exe is not included in Vista: http://bink.nu/Article9369.bink Help files with the HLP extension are no longer accessible in Windows Vista.
10. PROBLEMCHYLD, please be more specific on what you are talking about
11. Please revise the IE929969 VGX.DLL fix by adding an un-install option. make it backup the existing VGX.DLL file and rename it as VGX.ORI and then copy the updated VGX.DLL file when installing IE929969. the VGX.ORI file will be renamed to VGX.DLL after un-installing the unofficial IE929969 patch.
12. try to put more RAM into your WinME computer, -Chris-. WinME works best with at least 256Mb of RAM, which my HP Pavilion computer has. my HP computer with pre-installed ME used to have 64megs of RAM but now it has 256megs (though I may up it to 512Mb a few years from now if the RAM chips get cheaper, my HP computer can handle up to 512Mb of memory).
13. Don't worry about the broken DLLs, Chris. the_guy and I are working on the problem and will be resolved in the next beta release. I'll be sending it in a few moments today, the_guy. I may also have to revise the SCR56.INF file and make that INF file force the installation of the WSH 5.6 build 8832 files, overwriting the broken build 8833 files. be sure to include the WSH 5.6 build 8832 files as well as version 5.50.4134.120 of the SHELL32.DLL file
14. I agree with BenoitRen on this one. disabling scripting for ALL sites is a bad idea as that will break most sites that depend on scripts and the sites will not work as expected. ONLY thing I hate about Firefox browsers is poor cookie management. Dang those Firefox makers need to make it easier for users to control what cookies to accept and what cookies to reject (and easier access to the Cookie controls feature). The Mozilla, Seamonkey, IE, Opera browsers have far BETTER controls for cookie management and Firefox browsers lack the ability to reject "third party" cookies. Read bitman's statement in the Spybot "Firefox 2 immunization" forum thread: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=65158 It's a very interesting point he made about Firefox.
15. MDGx, I saw on your page about the unofficial SNMP.EXE & SNMPAPI.DLL Q926247 fix titled "Unofficial Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME SNMP Memory Corruption SNMPAPI.DLL 5.0.2195.6811 + SNMP.EXE 5.0.2195.7112 Security Vulnerability Fix". edit this by removing Win95 OSR1/OSR2. Version 5.0.2195.6811 of SNMPAPI.DLL and version 5.0.2195.7112 of SNMP.EXE do NOT work under Win95, even with Winsock 2 installed. These files cause "missing export" errors under Win95 and should only be used under Win98/ME.
16. I'm thinking of sending you an updated SPUPDATE.INF file that will resolve most of the problems found in the current beta of the ME service pack. let me know if you need it.
17.
i personally dislike mcafee but i remember have read something about how to update... from PeBuilder site
Download the latest superdat (sdatxxxx.exe) file from the Network Associates ftp site. Copy the file sdatxxxx.exe into the files folder located in the mcafee plugin directory (plugin\mcafee\files). Now you must unpack it using the "/e" parameter. From the mcafee folder, run sdatxxxx.exe /e (where xxxx is the version number, for example sdat4290.exe). When unpacking you don't see anything happen for about 20 seconds, just wait for it.
i doubt if it can help...
personally, I like updating mcafee virusscan manually. download the latest DAT file here: ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x/ get the dat-xxxx.zip file, open it in Winzip, extract the CLEAN.DAT, NAMES.DAT & SCAN.DAT files onto the VirusScan folder where those 3 DAT files are stored and overwrite the old DAT files with the newest ones. be sure to shut down ALL VirusScan and VShield apps before manually updating those three DAT files. the /A switch for vsh80en.exe doesnt work. it peforms regular install as if the /A switch was not used. both vsh80en.exe and vsp80en.exe use different setup programs than with older versions of VirusScan; I know for a fact that VirusScan home/pro editions 7.03, 6.02 and the 5.x editions use Windows Installer to setup the VirusScan app. I believe the /A switch only works with Windows Installer based setups. VirusScan home/pro edition 8.x does NOT use Windows Installer to install it.
18. version 1.70 of the MemTest86+ tool has been released at the Memtest.org site: http://www.memtest.org/ now supports newer CPUs and DDR2 ram chips
19. speaking of the MemTest86+ tool, DeadDude, a new version of it was posted (1.70) at the Memtest.org site a few days ago: http://www.memtest.org/
20. no M_win. LLXX made her point. the solutions MS mentioned are confusing. use the ME edition of Fdisk to partition 512gb+ HDs; dont use the Win98 editions of Fdisk.
21. of course not LLXX. the Win2000/XP editions of FORMAT.COM is a little different than the DOS/9xME editions and they only work within Windows 2000/XP, NOT outside of Win2k/XP. do you even have an XP machine or even experienced using an XP computer? good thing I've looked at XP's FORMAT.COM options on my bro's XP home edition computer.
22. Win98/ME users do NOT really need the Tzchange.exe utility, Acheron. Tzchange.exe is a command-line tool (not a GUI tool like Tzedit.exe). Win98/ME users are better off using the Time Zone Editor tool (tzedit.exe) as noted in MS article 914387 to make or edit time zone registry settings.
23. unfortunately (pcalvert, Petr & Eck), the KB816093 MS Java build 3810 update will NOT work unless you have a previous version of MS Java installed (build 3809 or earlier). If you have NO MS Java installed whatsoever on a Win9x system, the msjavx86.exe file from KB816093 will refuse to work - it can only update an existing version of MS Java to build 3810. MS made it that way. so to get KB816093 to work, install an old version of MS Java before installing KB816093.
24. dont worry Chris. many of the problems in beta 7 of the ME SP will be fixed soon. what kind of computer are you using? WinME works best with at least a 500Mhz Pentium 3 with 128Mb or 256Mb of RAM.
25. uh BenoitRen, I think you are in the wrong place to post this topic [unless you are using Win98 SE and NOT Win95 SR2.5] Please post the topic in the "Windows 95/98/98SE/ME" area and not in the "Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack" section so that there is less confusion.
