  1. soporific, you may want to set CacheWriteDelay registry entry to 0000 (or double-click on the NODELAY.REG file) after Q273017 IFSMGR.VXD 4.10.2225 fix is installed. that may make your Win98se system shut down a little faster. yeah I agree some of the info mentioned at the Lockernome forum thread is wrong and inaccurate
  2. HTH memo to anonymous creator of SHELL32.DLL 4.72.3812.620 fix: I do not expect a WinME shell32.dll fix right now so just take your time whether it is several weeks or several months. make one when you are ready so that WinME systems do not remain unpatched.
  3. WinNT4 by itself cant recognize FAT32. NT4 users will need a 3rd party driver to access FAT32 volumes
  4. either Christmas or New Year's. I still have to decide whether to include (or exclude) the RUNHELP.CAB, 2007 time zone adjustment registry fix, MSXML 2.5 (msxml.dll, msxmla.dll & msxmlr.dll) and Q329048 Plus!98/Win98 update. just wanted to note that it'll be a temporary takeover if Gape doesnt respond by either Christmas or New Year's
  5. All right, I found the problem with MSXML.DLL from KB832414 not registering with REGSVR32 and getting "LoadLibrary Failed ["msxml.dll"] error message" on my WinME computer. The MSXMLA.DLL and MSXMLR.DLL files were missing or deleted from my ME computer. When these two files are not installed or missing, MSXML.DLL file from KB832414 cant be registered. BUT when those two files are installed, MSXML.DLL from KB832414 will register properly with REGSVR32. Wonder if either MDGx or the_guy has some time to make unofficial U832414 MSXML.DLL fix for Win98/ME that will also include the MSXMLA.DLL and MSXMLR.DLL files.
  6. KB891711.EXE is NOT an MS-DOS file. It's a Windows file and SHOULD have a Version tab. If the Version tab does not appear on the KB891711.EXE file when right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties, then the file is corrupted and should be removed. Delete the KB891711.exe and Q891711.dll files from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\ folder, download the U891711 patch from MDGx's web site again and re-install the U891711 update and reboot. You should NOW have a clean install of the KB891711.EXE and Q891711.DLL files and should load correctly.
  7. yup. no wonder why this "unicode" stuff requires much more resources and more HD space it looks like seamonkey 1.5 browser will also be based on the gecko 1.9 runtime that Microsoft Firefox site I mentioned earlier is still working [hehehe]
  8. this one's a no-brainer, Ambassador. in Windows Explorer go to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\ folder, right-click on the KB891711.EXE file, choose Properties and click on the Version tab. do the same for the Q891711.DLL file. it most likely that something else is causing the Insufficient Memory Errors and not the 891711 files itself run MSCONFIG from the Run dialog box and click on the Startup tab to check what loads at startup
  9. well if the mobo has a 48bit LBA enabled BIOS [like the refurbished DFI CM33-TL mobo I have], then 137gb HDs or bigger should work ok OR get a 48bit LBA enabled IDE controller card as mentioned here.
  10. NEVER! *clinges to the old but adequate Help format* WAHAHAHA! GET OVER IT! It's reality, Benny BOY! Can you convince those software makers to NOT use the CHM Help file format? I like to see you try. Otherwise, admit defeat CHM Help file format is here to stay personally I too do like the ol' HLP help format which uses WinHelp and runs faster. too bad many software makers are using the CHM format to write Help files. that dont bother me! have you looked at the Linux-NTFS project, StateS? http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ Documentation for Partition Saving app posted here: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/en/documentation.html now THIS is how it should be for documentation for an app
  11. however, it may be a one time thing. once I release a new version of the 98se SP, I wont make any future releases after that. expect it around Christmas or New Year's. I did find problems with the MSXML.DLL KB832414 XML 2.5 patch. the MSXML.DLL file from KB832414 does NOT register under WinME (and may not work correctly under Win9xME). If you look here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en Supported OSes for MSXML 2.5 KB832414 fix are NT-based Windows only and does NOT mention Win98 & ME. I have to see if MSXML.DLL file from KB832414 would register correctly when using REGSVR32 under Win98FE and Win98SE. Type REGSVR32 MSXML.DLL as the DOS Prompt when you are in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder. If it registers, then the MSXML.DLL file can be used on your version of Windows, if it fails to register then it was not meant to be used under there.
  12. weird. maybe the KB891711 & KB918547 files you have installed are corrupted or the wrong version. un-install them and download & install the latest unofficial U891711 & U918547 fixes. BTW - are u using Win98 SE, Ambassador? when installing U891711, the kb891711.exe file should be version 4.10.2227 and the q891711.dll file should be version 4.10.2223.
  13. It does work even with WinME + IE6 SP1 on my relative's ME computer and on the WinME computer I tested. so there must be a problem on MY WinME computer that's causing the runhelp.cab fix not to work as I still couldnt get it to work on my WinME computer (it either could be some corrupted WSH files or WSH/IE registry settings; so far I havent found the "root" problem). Looks like I'll have to reformat my WinME machine and retry the RUNHELP.CAB fix. anyway, I needed to wipe out my ME machine once every few years to get the cleanest WinME install possible. BTW - the_guy mentioned earlier that he made Q925051 Jet 4.0 fix. replaces Q918144 patch. I'll also think about what you said about me taking over the 98SE SP. If I do release a new version of the 98se SP, it will have many of the add-ons (WMI 1.5, WMP 6.4, TTF Font Properties Extension, Wintop, etc.) that were included in the 98FE SP.
  14. Death to the CHM format! It's quite lame to have a help format that relies on IE, which in most cases has nothing to do with the application. FORGET IT, BenoitRen! MANY software makers (like the makers of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE and many more use CHM for help files. get used to it. When I said about documentation for Restoration I meant the documentation mentioned at its web site. needs more improvement on that! But the Restoration app itself is very good. This is actually the old SavePart [save Partition] renamed to Partition Saving [very cool tool, BTW].Please note that the actual server is located at: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/ - English [frames]: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/en/index_frame.html - English [no frames]: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/en/index.html - French [frames]: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/fr/index_frame.html - French [no frames]: http://damien.guibouret.free.fr/fr/index.html partition-saving.com is only a fake redirector, not a real domain name, resolves to damien.guibouret.free.fr . HTH NICE! highly recommend using Partition Saving program to any Windows user BTW - Undelete Plus app has been revised again, this time to version 2.3. I installed Undelete Plus 2.3 under my WinME computer and it does finally work on large HDs under ME. finally they got it right! previous versions couldnt scan my HD under ME as it would always crash or generate error messages.
  15. I'll have to test this on my "dummy test" WinME setup, maybe I can come up with a solution. [?] I have tested the unofficial RUNHELP.CAB patch under a different WinME computer (a clean install of ME) and it DOES work!!! It might be either another unofficial patch, an IE patch or messed up IE registry settings that caused the RUNHELP.CAB patch not to function correctly under my WinME computer. I may have to wipe out IE with IEradicator, delete the corrupted IE registry settings and re-install IE 6 SP1 on my WinME PC and re-install RUNHELP.CAB update to see if that'll fix the problem.
  16. well I have created an updated release of the 98se SP (v2.2.0) in my spare time a while ago but I'm not going to be creating future releases after that. by the start of next year I might be moving on to more important things in life outside the computer world. if there was going to be a newer release of the 98se SP (created by me) I'll probably release it right around the Christmas holidays. but that's a BIG IF It looks like Gurgelmeyer may have also suffered the same fate as Gape. see Hostream forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=130 it looks like someone there might be taking over the Hostream project
  17. I would DISAGREE with you on sticking with IE5, fdv! first of all, IE6 is much MORE secure than IE5. second, there are some sites (like the Windows Update site) that DO depend on IE. How do you expect to use the Windows Update site without IE? Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox browsers dont work with WU. Use IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1 (and install latest IE 5.5 or IE 6.0 security patch) if anyone is using Win2000 SP4. IE 5 is SO last decade!!!! BTW - if anyone wants to add "tabbed" browsing to either IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6 SP1 on a Win2k machine, download and install version 6.3 of the Yahoo! Toolbar. It may not be pretty but that seems to be the way to get Tabbed browsing to older versions of IE. Get it here: http://toolbar.yahoo.com/
  18. one more thing MDGx. I did emailed the_guy near the end of October and sent him v4.0.9417 of the msrepl40.dll file from Q910906 for WS2K3. He hasnt created an updated version of the unofficial Q918144 Jet 4.0 patch for Win9x/ME/2000/NT4 yet. I'll have to email him again and request that he make an updated version with the newer msrepl40.dll file. btw - Sun Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 released at Majorgeeks.com site. it's not yet mentioned at the Sun Java site. Also released is Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.42 build 13.
  19. you're not going to believe this guys but reading this Bink.nu article: http://bink.nu/Article8777.bink there's a "microsoft firefox"? wahahaha! funny!
  20. see this Toshiba Europe support page, soporific. they have some info on what the Q280448 patch does for Win98se. I would install Q276602 hotfix first before installing Q280448 since Q280448 has version 4.10.2228 of the pci.vxd file and 280448 contains only the newer pci.vxd file while 276602 has ios.vxd (4.10.2224), mshdc.inf and pci.vxd (4.10.2227) files.
  21. that's too bad. i'm thinking the same thing with Gape, the creator of the unofficial 98se service pack who hasn't been around for several months now and the 98se SP hasnt been updated for almost a full year
  22. even better, FoxHound. go to this site instead for getting Clam Antivirus app for Windows: http://www.clamwin.com/ the one provided at the Clamav.net site is for Unix/Linux plonkeroo, let's wait by the end of this year or by the start of next year if Gape to see if he responds. i know for sure the Win2k SP5 hotstream project has been put on hold for a while since the Hotstream creator [Gurgelmeyer] hasnt been around too.
  23. it's all right if the unofficial Runhelp fix does not work under WinME. WinME users can workaround the problem by clicking on YES on the security box when double-clicking on the HTMLHELP.HTM file with original, unpatched RUNHELP.CAB file. BTW Windows Server 2003 SP2 is scheduled to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2007 and Windows XP SP3 might come out sometime in the first half of 2008 as noted here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx wow, I guess XP users will have to wait almost two more years for XP SP3 (it'll be almost four years after SP2)
  24. poor choice LLXX. Qwerty.Msi is for NT-based versions of Windows only, excluding 9xME OSes. read the System Requirements section for Qwerty.Msi. also it requires .NET Framework 1.1 or higher installed.
  25. yes, Hu$tle. HOWEVER, I have tested version 5.6.0.8833 of JSCRIPT.DLL and VBSCRIPT.DLL files and they do NOT register under Win98/ME. MDGx is RIGHT about THAT. If these files were from a beta version of Windows Vista then they should NOT be included in future betas of the ME service pack and in unofficial U917344 fix. Version 5.7.0.5730, on the other hand, of the JSCRIPT.DLL and VBSCRIPT.DLL files DO register fine under Win98/ME AS LONG AS the files were obtained from the IE7 for WinXP package.
