98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
along with deleting unofficial Q920213 MS Agent fix for Win9x/ME/NT4 [which does not work under these OSes], please REMOVE the Western Australian Daylight Savime Time KB928939 updates and the link to MS article 928939 which Microsoft removed from their Support site. They've been replaced [aka. superseded] by the KB929120 updates for WinXP & Server 2003: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929120 KB929120 does NOT completely replace KB928388 because KB929120 does NOT contain the 2007 DST registry entries found in the KB928388 updates. remove unofficial KB928939 fixes and replace them with unofficial KB929120 fixes -
Windows 98 + ME *still* alive campaign + logos
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
what edition of Windows 95, BenoitRen? It better not be the original/retail version of Win95 which had outlived and fully served its purpose in the computer world. The OSR2 editions of Win95 (versions B and C; MS-DOS 7.1 identifies Windows 95 OSR2 as 4.00.1111) are still usable IMHO because of FAT32 support, DMA support for CD & hard drives and other improvements that were left out of the original and SP1 versions of Windows 95. -

the_guy: can you include the daylight saving time Q928388 registry fixes and the revised RUNHELP.CAB file into the next release of the ME SP? MDGx created an unofficial RUNHELP.CAB fix for Win98fe/98se/ME to remove the prompt when double-clicking on the HTMLHELP.HTM file from the Windows folder

Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Yeah! really? are u sure? how about the Italian edition of Win98 SE? the latest U891711 patch does not cause "insufficient memory" errors as I've tested on many Win98 & WinME machines. the problem seems to lie with one or some of third party apps/drivers. this is more likely to happen when a lot of programs are loaded at Startup. do a Scandisk from pure DOS mode to fix disk errors. then when reloading Windows, run Registry Editor [REGEDIT.EXE], check the contents of the following registry keys: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run", "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices" If there are too many entries in any of the three registry keys, start deleting some of them (or use MSCONFIG and on the Startup tab, uncheck the entries that are non-essential). -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
note to the_guy: can you create unofficial OE 923694 MS06-076 security patches for OE6 SP1 and OE 5.5 SP2? note to MDGx: let's revise unofficial 905915 update for IE 5.5 SP2 and include version 5.50.4970.2300 of the URL.DLL file which is included in the KB925454 update for IE 5.01 SP4/Win2000 SP4. speaking of the pngfilt.dll file, Tihiy, all KB925454 updates have newer pngfilt.dll files. -
WinME CDs are no longer being sold as Win98/ME are no longer supported by MS. the solution MS mentioned in MS article 280737 is somewhat convoluted [at least the way M$ described it is misleading] how about using FDisk from the WinME startup disk? or better yet, partition the 512GB+ drives with third party solutions/tools if you cant make a WinME startup disk or dont own a WinME CD (or the WinME setup files), go to this site and download the WinME startup disk image: http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/#winme_full

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
This fix was created by the_guy.HTH please REMOVE the Q920213.EXE patch off your web site, MDGx. The updated files from unofficial 920213 patch do NOT work under Win98/ME (they are actually Windows-specific based). Running the updated AGENTSVR.EXE file resulted in the error message "The AGENTSVR.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:UpdateLayeredWindow". I un-installed MS Agent and re-install it on my WinME computer and original AGENTSVR.EXE file runs with no errors. If you look at security bulletin MS06-068 and look at the updated MS Agent files VERY carefully (in the Security Update Information section), the patches do NOT have binarilly identical files. The Win2000 version of 920213 update has 2.0.0.3424 of Agentsvr.exe BUT the file size is 242,448 bytes. The WinXP edition of 920213 fix also has 2.0.0.3424 of Agentsvr.exe BUT its file size is 256,512 bytes. AND the file size for the Agentsvr.exe file from the Win2003 edition of the 920213 patch is also different from the Win2000 & XP KB920213 updates. -
Undelete Plus for Windows 98FE/98SE/ME
erpdude8 replied to erpdude8's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
ok let's get back on track with the topic. New version of Undelete Plus (version 2.4) released at their web site: http://www.undelete-plus.com/ now available in more languages and has a faster scan than with version 2.3. -
Powerquest's Partition Magic program, PROBLEMCHYLD! Partition Magic has been around for more than a decade and can safely convert from many different file system formats (whether it's NTFS, FAT16, FAT32). It can do it all without loss of data. buy yourself a copy of Partition Magic and you wont be sorry. but as oscardog stated, back up important data before using third party partition tools to switch file system formats.

Unofficial WMP 6.4 Win9x/ME Q925398 DXMASF.DLL + STRMDLL.DLL fix does NOT work. WMP 6.4 for Win95/98/ME/NT4 uses DXMASF.DLL version 6.4.7 [NOT 6.4.9 like in Win2000/XP/2003]. IE6 SP1 installs WMP 6.4 version 6.4.07.1121 under Win9x/NT4 while Win2000/XP/2003 have embedded WMP 6.4.09. patch needs to be revised for sure. Note when making unofficial WMP 7.1 patches, the WMP version is 7.01, NOT 7.10. -
you were right on, MDGx. I stand corrected. I tried registering & using the NT-based QDV.DLL and QDVD.DLL files (from DXNT.CAB file of DX9.0c) under WinME and the MS DVD Player applet [dvdplay.exe] does not work. It'll display an error message to "upgrade DShow". I overwritten those two files with the 9x-based editions (from the DIRECTX.CAB file of DX9.0c) and the WinME DVD Player program [dvdplay.exe] now runs properly. The MS DVD Player app [DVDPLAY.EXE] is stored in the WINDOWS folder. You'll need at least a DVD drive to run DVDPLAY.EXE on a Win98 or WinME computer.

Win9x CHKDSK is totally USELESS on FAT32 formatted volumes. It'll detect FAT32 but will NOT scan it for errors and will tell the user to use SCANDISK to fix errors on FAT32 systems. However, CHKDSK can still be used to check floppy disks (which always use the older FAT file system) and other removable drives as long as the removable drives are not formatted with FAT32 or any other file system.

2007 Daylight Savings Time zone adjustment for Windows 2000
erpdude8 replied to erpdude8's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
it's too bad MS didnt bother making a KB928388 update for Win2000 because Win2000 is past "mainstream" support and now in "extended" support. ALL Windows 2000 users should be aware of the Daylight Saving Time changes starting in year 2007. I like to see the 2007 DST time zone adjustment fix included in the next release of unofficial Win2k SP5.x, if it is possible. -
Yeah, I totally agree, this is going to completely use up all my unused monthly data allowance, AND totally saturate my bandwidth for my ADSL2 broadband connection (with theoretical speeds up to 3mb/s). I mean, what were you thinking MDGx? The original reg file is about 14,000 bytes which is a whopping 1% of the size of a floppy disk, and your hotfix is 67,000 bytes, a massive increase of about 400% which now would take up over 4% of a floppy. Outrageous !!! oh quit whining, soporific! SHEESH! MDGx's unofficial 928388 patches are small anyway. why complain about a bunch of relatively small byte sizes? the difference between 14k bytes and 67k bytes are almost insignificant and my DSL connection is only up to 384 Kbits/sec and no faster like Petr said, it's for ALL parts of the world - not just for the USA note that MDGx also made an unofficial 928388 patch for WinNT4/Win2000/pre-XPSP2 systems as M$ didnt release any 2007 time zone fixes for these older Windows systems.
-
note to MDGx: ALL Win95 & Win98 users MUST install all year 2000 fixes & the timedate.cpl Q237493 hotfix before installing the unofficial Q928388 DST time zone registry fixes minor correction: DST is daylight saving time, not daylight savings time - common mistake most people make

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
PROBLEMCHYLD, I'm NOT making an unofficial 98se SP3. It'll still be a 98se SP2 but will include most of the stuff from the 98 FE SP2 pack. I'm still recovering from a cold. feeling better now. estimated release of the new 98se SP might be either Christmas or New Year's MDGx: speaking of MDAC 911562, the MDAC 2.8 RTM KB911562 breaks WinME Help & Support Center as noted at this page: http://www.crashfixpc.com/HSfails.htm The KB911562 patch for MDAC 2.8 SP1 doesnt break ME Help & Support center. that page also mentions how to re-install Help & Support Center under WinME whenever Help & Support no longer works correctly. -
IRRELEVANT! Not applicable. see my latest post in unofficial 918547 fix thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...77218&st=15 "Killing" KB891711.exe file causes BSODs. Use EndItAll to safely close KB891711.exe. antivirus and firewall apps are more likely to slow internet connections than with the kb891711.exe file. that's why I turn off on-resident, TSR or real-time antivirus protection I did remove KB891711.exe from Startup and my AT&T Yahoo DSL internet connection showed NO improvement (and when I installed the 891711 patch I had NO slowdown). in other words, removing or installing KB891711 did not affect my DSL connection.

Starting in year 2007, Daylight Saving Time will begin on the second Sunday of March instead of the first Sunday of April and will end on the first Sunday of November instead of the last Sunday of October. See this Microsoft article about the changes of Daylight Saving Time of 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/timezone/dst2007.mspx MDGx has created an unofficial registry fix for WinNT4, Win2000 & pre-SP2 editions of WinXP that will make these older OSes implement the newer Daylight Saving Time format: http://www.mdgx.com/files/KB928388.EXE also see MS article 914387 on how to set up your version of Windows 2000 to use the new DST format: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=914387 and in the 2007 time zone adjustment for windows thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=87399

there is a thread about the 2007 daylight saving time zone adjustment for win2000 in the Hotstream forum. see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=88060

hey guys. I had a cold and a flu several days ago but now I'm feeling better unofficial U918547 patch from MDGx site has KB918547.exe & Q918547.dll version 4.10.2226 < created by "anonymous" person I ditched Microsoft's KB918547 fix and the previous U918547 patch that has the KB918547.exe & Q918547.dll files because they're replaced by a newer 918547 patch that has newer GDI.EXE & GDI32.DLL files that provide the same fixes as previous 918547 updates. Well I have more than 50% space left, and I did a defrag not that while ago. Maybe I should run a scandisk? K_O_ & Ambassador: run Scandisk from native/pure DOS mode first. then run defrag (BE sure to replace the defrag.exe file with the WinME version as the ME version of DEFRAG.EXE re-arranges files MUCH FASTER than the 98se version). the page file limit (aka. the swap file or virtual memory) can be up to 4 gigs "out of memory" errors are sometimes caused by low system resources (system, user, gdi) when system resource memory is low, out of memory errors may occur

IE script error on 98se w/ SP 2.1a on .chm help files
erpdude8 replied to Molecule's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
LLXX is right on. I had encountered some IE script errors with RealPlayer 10.5 CHM Help file a year ago. RealNetworks released an updated version of the RealPlayer 10.5 CHM Help file to fix the script errors problem. therefore, the CHM file was poorly written but RealNetworks fixed it. there was a recent post by BenoitRen in the Undelete Plus thread that he hates CHM files -
It doesn't break anything to improperly restart usually. I only shut down with the power button since years because it is faster. And of course I have disabled the automatic scandisk after bad shutdown. The CHKDSK tool from WinNT4/2k/XP/2k3/Vista does NOT work under Win9xME systems. requires DLL files from NT-based OSes which may not work under Win9xME. I sometimes use the Power button to initiate a shut down on my WinME computer as long as ACPI support is enabled. heck I even pressed the Power button on my brother's XP laptop and it automated the shutdown process. I wont try this on older non-ACPI computers as hitting the Power button to shut down those dinosaur-aged Pentium One PCs can actually damage or corrupt files (I've had that happen to me a few times)

speaking of wextract.exe, where can i find version 5.50.4925.2200 of the wextract.exe file? some older IE patches were created from version 5.50.4925.2200 of wextract.exe

speaking of formatting hard drives under XP, Andromeda43, WinXP's disk utilities can only format & partition FAT32 volumes up to 32 Gb. If you want to partition and format FAT32-based drives beyond 32 GB you must use FDISK and FORMAT tools from a Win98 or WinME boot disk. see these articles on the limitations of FAT32 file system for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301340/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463/en-us
