98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
the_guy, I've been told by MDGx that you created the unofficial Q926247 snmp.exe/snmpapi.dll patch. The files from the Q926247 patch do NOT work under Win95 as I've tested recently. Could you revise the patch and make it install ONLY under Win98/ME (and call it Unofficial SNMP Q926247 Fix for Windows 98/ME)? -
thanks. It would also be nice to put in the dialog box on the DST update saying "You MUST click OK. Do NOT click on Cancel". Also, if you read the Windows 98, ME DST Patch article here: http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/02/w...-dst-patch.html The author of the article says that the DST feature is "broken" under Windows 95. This is simply INCORRECT! I've used the DST feature on a Win95 system and tested it MANY times and it DOES work as expected. But to ensure the Daylight Saving Time features work correctly on a Win95 machine, Win95 users MUST install the Win95 year 2000 fixes and the Timedate.cpl Q237493 hotfix. And then apply the unofficial Q931836 patch [don't bother using the unofficial DST patch from the IntelliAdmin.com site if it does not work correctly on Win95] under Win95 to take advantage of the new DST format. I'm pretty sure a lot of Win95 users would BEG to DIFFER on what the author said in that article.

Rainmaker, I wonder if you would like to try out Firefox 3.0 alpha 2 on a Win98 machine. get it here: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=granp...〈=en-US firefox 3 is code named "gran paradiso"
-
how, awergh? try beta testing firefox 3.0 alpha 2 (or gran paradiso alpha 2)- http://download.mozilla.org/?product=granp...〈=en-US Mozilla says FF 3.0 a2 requires Win2000/XP. try running this on a Win98/ME system and see what you get.

and I HIGHLY recommend using IrFanView (latest version is 3.99) to open, edit and create image files. even with the PNG graphics filter installed, PNG image files will NEVER open in MSPaint unless it's the Win2000, XP, 2003 or the Vista release of MSPaint. PNG files DO, on the other hand, open (or viewed) in Internet Explorer. AND, chuckbourdeau & Ambassador, IrFanView is freeware (for home and educational use) most of the graphics filter files from MDGx's graphics filters pack are taken from MS Office/MS Works

nothing, except updated fonts for Win98

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

Link to Win98FE SP v2.07 now posted: http://www.mytempdir.com/1256778 -
the_guy, there are differences between the "file version" info when viewing the ME service pack's properties. Right click on mesp202en-b8.exe and select Properties and click on the Version tab. File version of the ME SP beta 8 is 2.0.5.1 (it should be 2.0.2.8). If you view the Version info in Win2000/ME/XP, the File Version is listed as 6.0.3790.0; in Win95/98/NT4 the ME SP File version info will be different. Before releasing the next beta (looks like beta 9), you should edit the version info of the ME SP package in Resource Hacker (Reshack) and change ALL instances of the file version and product version info so that they match. see my 98fe SP EXE package and look at the Version info in Resource Hacker. From now on after I create the EXE packages for the 98fe SPs, I edit the Version Info in Reshack in TWO places (not one) and save changes to the SPs. also you may want to change the Copyright year from 2006 to 2007 of your ME SP. Let's go NO higher than beta 9 of the ME SP. ten betas are too much already, IMHO, and the next release after beta 9 should either be RC1 or PR-1 (PR stands for preview release). be sure to include the newer Root Certificates Update too as MS revised the package again.

alternate site to get Root Certificates Update (different name but same package): http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdo...9b8ad0f8d1a.exe yup, it's safe to use the updated Rootsupd pack under Win95 + IE4.x/5.x. dont use it if IE is NOT installed under Win95 I'll post up unofficial 98FE SP v2.07 later this week. it includes the Internet Print Service 1.0 addon from the Win2k/ME CD with the newer Root Certificates package and an updated DST INF file to fix minor DST problems. -
Unofficial Root Certificates 2007 Update
erpdude8 replied to erpdude8's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
MDGx, you can now use the old link to the official MS Root Certificates Update again: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe (this wextract package is now 6.00.2600 which should work on Win9x/2000/ME/NT4) also found it here: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdo...9b8ad0f8d1a.exe (different name, same package) -
ok, I know what I did. I was supposed to click OK (or press the Enter key) when the Timezone dialog box pops up while running the Q931836 patch. instead I pressed the Esc key (same thing as clicking the Cancel button) and that's when things got screwed up [DOH!]. The US Pacific timezone was changed to "Casablanca". anyway, I changed the timezone back to US Pacific from the Timezone dialog box and clicked OK and things were back to normal. I didn't really like the idea of the INF file removing the TimeZoneInformation registry info and the KB931836 updates for WinXP & Win2003 do NOT do that.
-
Ambassador, what version of Windows are you using? Install MDGx's unofficial MSPaint Graphics filters pack first from his web site: http://www.mdgx.com/files/GRPHFLTS.EXE (this pack should install the PNG, GIF, JPEG and other filters. you can NOT open nor save PNG image files with Win9x Paint unless you are using WinXP which the XP edition of MSPaint allows opening and saving PNG files) then run MS Paint again with the installed graphics filters. Be sure your video card is using at least 16bit High Color mode (65536 colors) or better so make changes to your video card settings (if necessary) before running Paint.

whoops! spoke too soon. I take it back. MDGx's Q931836 patch did NOT work as expected on my Win98/ME computers (it almost did). However I like the earlier unofficial DST patch MDGx made where it did NOT delete the registry entries from the following registry key: HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation I know for sure the official KB931836 updates for WinXP SP2 and WinServ2003 SP1 do NOT delete the "TimeZoneInformation" registry entries from that registry key. SO MDGx must make changes to the Q931836.inf file. change the [DR] section from this: ---- [DR] HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardName,0, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightName,0, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardStart,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightStart,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,ActiveTimeBias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,Bias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardBias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightBias,1, HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\AUS Eastern Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Tasmania Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Cen. Australia Standard Time (CommonwealthGames 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Cen. Australia Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\W. Australia" ---- to this: ---- [DR] HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\AUS Eastern Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Tasmania Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Cen. Australia Standard Time (CommonwealthGames 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Cen. Australia Standard Time (Commonwealth Games 2006)" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\W. Australia" ---- currently, the Q931836.inf file executed the [AR] section and THEN the [DR] section, deleted the TimeZoneInformation reg entries, which messed things up on my Win98/ME computers. bottom line, the INF file should be updated to NOT remove the TimeZoneInformation entries.
-
The Q931836 DST fixes are flawed MDGx. they didn't work. they also changed the Time Zone on my Win98se/WinME machines from "US Pacific" to "Casablanca"! [huh, what the f@#*@$*(!!] I found the problem as to why they do that. Look in the Q931836.inf file and in the DR section: [DR] HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardName,0, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightName,0, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardStart,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightStart,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,ActiveTimeBias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,Bias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,StandardBias,1, HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation,DaylightBias,1, REMOVE these lines from the INF file. I think Q931836.inf, ran [AR] first and then [DR] which deleted those reg entries and made my Win98se/WinME PCs confused with the current time zone registry entries. so revise the Q931836.inf file by removing those reg entries and repost your patches.

uh, I HARDLY get blue screen problems on my WinME machine, LaRcOs. I have WinME pre-installed on my HP Pavilion 7840 machine and all the hardware seem to like WinME. hutrijo did not mention how fast the cpu was and how much memory (RAM) installed on his Fujitsu Simens Scaleo machine < is this computer a desktop or a laptop? WinME seems to hate older machines slower than a Pentium II with insufficient amount of RAM.

The ERPMan Windows 95 page is my page, BenoitRen. I only find the OSR2 releases of Win95 still useful to me as I can put either the B or C version on my old NEC computer which is now at my next door neighbor's house. and I still find Sean Erwin's Windows 95 OSR2 FAQ to have useful info about the OSR2 editions of Win95. The site that had the OSR2 FAQ has removed it but you can take a look at the OSR2 FAQ here.

Windows Update web site no longer functing for win98?
erpdude8 replied to 98 Guy's topic in Windows 9x/ME
WindizUpdate is WEAK! I read an online article about WindizUpdate about a year ago and the author who wrote that article advises to avoid going to that site because of its flaws. ok, found that article <read here> anyway, guys, the V4 Windows Update site started to work again on my WinME computer lately. it was more of a technical glitch on the V4 WU server. -
glad to help you out, anothersmith84. be sure to save that precopy1.cab file I gave you along with the WinME setup files on the hard drive so that Windows ME setup wont ask you for the WinME CD.

MDGx's unofficial Q931836 DST patch for Win9xME systems IS SAFE to use, Fozj. All it does is make registry changes to make use of the new daylight saving time format. I've installed it and it works great!
-
Try telling MS about it here: https://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...in/alertus.aspx If that doesnt work, let Woody [aka. the MS "Windows Victim"] know about the "exploit" from his web site: http://www.askwoody.com/

eidenk and the_guy, I think the jscript.dll file from final release of Windows Vista is also vulnerable

Note: WinME-Defrag.exe in Win98SE breaks Money99!
erpdude8 replied to creopard's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have my rather more pragmatic one: while substituting MS defrag.exe with an opensource one, is a nice thing and, more important than that, it is pertaining to the OP request, IF the program exists. If it does not, it does not solve the problem, nor does it belong to this thread.... So the answer to my question: is clear (bolding is mine): About this: you might however understand the difference there is between starting a new thread about an existing good app and hijacking someone else's thread with unuseful, unrelated information. And I am begging the pardon of other members if our little exchange of ideas has worsened this hijacking jaclaz very well said, jaclaz. But I really HATE "Opensource" apps that do NOT work under Windows 9xME systems, so I recommend AGAINST them. unless they are reliable enough to run under Win95/98/ME, AVOID using such programs. so that's my "rebuttal" to what patchworks said earlier. swgreed may want to try un-instaling money99, deleting the registry entries and "left-over" files and then re-installing money99 from scratch to get it to work again. might be possible the german 98se SP corrupted some DLL files that caused money99 to stop working. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Theoretically the roots update should install on all Win9x editions with MS IE 4/5/6 installed, including Win95, but I don't have any of those OSes installed anymore, so I can't test.If anyone has Windows 95, 95a OSR1, 95B OSR 2.0/2.1 or 95C OSR 2.5 please test and post here results. Thanks. Thanks for your reply MDGx. The latest Root Certificate Update (RCU) seems to install on win95 OSR2.1 with IE5.5. Before applying the RCU I exported the whole registry and noted the size. After applying the update, I again exported the registry, and the size had increased (in this case by 22.1 KB). I think I'll be able to test the RCU with Win95 OSR2.x with IE4/5 sometime next week [do NOT ask BenoitRen to test out RCU on his OSR2.x system cuz I dont think he uses IE]. I'm feeling a lot better now than I did earlier this week since I got a cold from my cousin. -

Please, remove OLEDLG.DLL version 5.00.2195.7114 from the Unofficial OLE Automation Update, MDGx. I DID find a problem with it and that it breaks the ability to insert OLE objects into documents when using Wordpad and/or ALL MS Office apps like Word/Excel/Powerpoint and third party apps on Windows 9x/ME/NT4 OSes. To reproduce this problem, open Wordpad (or MS Word or Corel WordPerfect), click on Insert and click on Object. It will do NOTHING when it is supposed to display the Insert Object dialog box. After I restored the OLEDLG.DLL file with the original one (either the Win98se or WinME version) the Insert Object dialog box will appear after clicking on Insert, then choosing Object. -
Use K-meleon version 1.02. get it here: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=Download or get Opera web browser from the www.opera.com site
