  1. The KB923789 security update installs Flash Player ActiveX control v6.0.88 which should fix the security problems mentioned in this Adobe Security Bulletin (even though APSB06-11 does not mention Flash Player 6): http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bull.../apsb06-11.html and in Microsoft security bulletin MS06-069: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-069.mspx Flash Player 9.0.28 fixes security problems mentioned in this Adobe Security Bulletin: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bull.../apsb06-18.html Adobe says there that Flash Player 7 & 8 are affected but have not released updated versions of Flash Player 7 & 8 to fix the problems in security bulletin APSB06-18. The Q322656 IEINFO5.OCX file should strictly be used under Windows 2000 only. The IEINFO5.OCX v5.50.4918.1900 Fix does NOT work correctly under Win98/ME/NT4 and it will break some of Internet Explorer's "System Information" details when running MSINFO32 under Win98/ME. make a note of this.
  2. version 5.2.3790.1830 & higher of the HHCTRL.OCX file do NOT work correctly under Win98/ME and could break some functions with Win98's CHM Help files. use 5.2.3790.558 of HHCTRL.OCX instead to ensure the Win98 CHM Help files work correctly on your machine.
  3. This is the best undelete program. not quite. Documentation of the Restoration program is LAME!!! no help file to go with RESTORATION is also appalling. Restoration did work ok on my WinME computer but it was a little slower than Undelete Plus. so "RESTORATION" is FAR from perfect and far from being the best undelete program, in my opinion. the makers of RESTORATION should write a HLP or CHM file for their app. right now I do NOT recommend the RESTORATION app for novice Windows users. still Undelete Plus (latest version 2.2) crashes under WinME when attempting to Scan C: drives but it works when checking other drives. so Undelete Plus also needs some major improvements to that app as well.
  4. some of the unofficial patches MDGx create for Win98/ME automatically reboot the computer after installation. be aware of that. Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista updates are made by SFXCAB.EXE which use /norestart switch. Windows 95/98/ME updates are IExpress/Wextract patches where you could use the /r:n switch to prevent them from restarting your computer. You CAN use /Q switch on BOTH SFXCAB and IEXPRESS packages. I havent tested /Q:A on an SFXCAB package so I'm not sure if /Q:A works for SFXCAB
  5. ABSOLUTELY NOT, Fredledingue! when I installed the latest release of the U891711 patch on my Win98/ME machines (which use AT&T Yahoo DSL), my DSL connections were UNaffected. so something else is causing your DSL connections to go haywire OR it could be your DSL provider is having some problems with their network. so that means you'll have to use your DSL connection at a later time when it is working without any problems. try using a utility such as NetStat Live to check your DSL connection: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm
  6. JSCRIPT.DLL 5.7.0.5730 from IE 7.0 has no unresolved dependencies. It also registers under SE. Same with VBSCRIPT.DLL 5.7.0.5730. I rarely use IE, so I couldn't swear that they're absolutely safe, but they seem to be working so far. believe it or not MDGx, tErmY is right. I did use REGSVR32 to register v5.7.0.5730 the jscript.dll and vbscript.dll files and they do register properly under Win98/ME. NO DONT use the ones from Vista, the_guy. they maybe for Vista only! use the ones either from IE7 for XP or IE7 for Server 2003. also note, the_guy, that the latest release of the 98fe SP I made is no longer a beta but a preview release (half beta - half RC). It looks like I may post up a final release of the 98fe SP sometime in January 2007.
  7. AVG antivirus free edition 7.5.430 can also be obtained here.
  8. thanks, the_guy. Shockwave Player 10.1.4.020, however, was posted in early October as I remember I downloaded it back then pay close attention, MDGx, to the links the_guy posted. URL begins with "fpdownload.macromedia.com" and not "download.macromedia.com" (except for swflash.cab which is located at download.macromedia.com site)
  9. Works fine for me. What are newer versions for, anyway? Thanks for the link to Restoration guys. a new version of Undelete-Plus (2.2) has been released. the latest version should fix bugs/problems found in previous releases when running it on large HDs under WinME. Undelete Plus ran okay on my WinXP machines but not on my WinME computer. it always display a "floating point division by zero" error after clicking on Scan when running Undelete Plus under ME. hopefully version 2.2 will work properly under ME. I might give the Restoration app a try later this month
  10. sorry MDGx. the links that you provided still point to Flash Player v9.0.16. <edited: see the_guy's post below>
  11. your welcome. be sure you have the 5100 scan engine DLL file [mcscan32.dll] version 5.1.00 and the latest DAT files for your VirusScan app.
  12. weird, I did not have those problems on my WinME computer workaround: do NOT install nor remove Netmeeting after installing the ME service pack. after installing the ME SP, REBOOT your WinME computer ASAP. after WinME reloads, then un-install Netmeeting from Add/Remove programs. for ME, I just install/update the Netmeeting app with v4.40.3399 as mentioned in security bulletin MS04-011.
  13. it looks like the Intel D975XBX mobo is not compatible with Win98/ME. Official downloads for D975XBX board are only for Win2000 and WinXP at the Intel support site. dont bother installing any 9xME version of Windows on an intel D975XBX or D975XBX2 mobo because they're guaranteed NOT to work. it might be your cpu & motherboard, RJARRRPCGP. what kind of mobo does your PC have when you had this problem? newer types of mobos can no longer handle Win98/ME correctly and require Win2000, XP or newer Windows OS
  14. the hticons.dll file (if it exists) will be overwritten by the one included in the 98fe SP regardless if a newer or older version was installed. If "Hticons.dll,,,4" was specified, the SP will install the hticons.dll file whether the hticons.dll file was previously installed or not and regardless of the version of the hticons.dll file. Link to 98fe SP 2.05 preview release 1 <link deleted> includes shell32.dll "delete large files" + copy 2gb+4gb files fix, newer unofficial u891711 fix, newer Root Certificates update and newer Fdisk.exe + Format.com display error fixes
  15. the MDM.EXE file is also included in Microsoft Office 2000. After I installed the SR1 update onto my original Office 2000 Premium edition suite, MDM.EXE began loading at startup on my WinME/XP machines. in Win95/98/ME, delete the MDM.EXE registry entry from "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices" key and MDM.EXE will stop running at startup. in WinNT4/2k/XP/2k3, open the Services module and set the Machine Debug Manager service Startup Type from Automatic to either Disabled or Manual
  16. Not on my Win98SE machines but they are installed on my WinXP boxes I think you should stick with VirusScan 9.1 build 9.1.0.8. I tested a demo version of VirusScan 10 build 10.0.21 and the McAfee security center app bundled in VS 10 nags me to check for updates (after more than 7 days) after setting up VirusScan 10 and mcafee security center to not automatically check for and download updates. VS 9 and the older build of mcafee security center is less intrusive. I got rid of it and reverted back to the 9.1.0.8 version. VirusScan Home Edition 11 (also included in VirusScan Plus 2007) can only run under Win2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista. last version of VirusScan Home Edition to support Win98 & ME is version 10.
  17. darn it, PsycoUnc! what the hell is wrong with you!
  18. that's because most usb 2.0 devices are NOT supposed to be listed in the system tray. they should only show up in device manager unless you are connecting usb flash drives or other removable usb drives do you mean, safe removal system tray icon? buy the IOMagic Datastation USB Floppy drive/ 7-in-1 media reader and try connecting that to a usb 2.0 port. I know that device should show up in both device manager and in the "safe removal" system tray icon
  19. here are other versions of the USBView tool I found at these sites: USBView.exe version 5.1.2600.1106 (july 2004 version) http://www.k0lee.com/dc3000/utils/usbviewJUL2004-3.exe USBView.exe version 4.10.1721: ftp://ftp.uni-linz.ac.at/Driver/Drucker/H...ccc/usbview.exe also see Petr's latest post in this thread on getting version 5.1.2600.2180 of the Usbview tool: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=581843
  20. You'll have to make the patch detect v4.72 of shell32.dll file under Win95. I've created an unofficial Wordpad patch for Win95 (it has not been released) but the updated wordpad.exe file requires v4.72 of shell32.dll file and will not run with v4.00 of shell32.dll. the wordpad.exe file from Win98/ME can read DLL/EXE files > 64kb while the Win95 version of wordpad.exe cant and will display the "Cannot load executable files" error message
  21. more accurately, original M$ KB891711 patch from March 2005 with v4.10.2222 of KB891711.exe caused BSOD errors on some Win98/ME machines. MS revised the KB891711 patches in April 2005 which had v4.10.2223 of KB891711.exe that fixed most of the problems. but yeah better off using the unofficial U891711 patches (please download latest release if you didnt get one or have an earlier release)
  22. how about patching the WINME SHELL32.DLL v5.50.4134.100 file? the "delete large files" bug also occurs under WinME + IE6.x
  23. Currently I am beta testing Flash Player 9.0.21.75 (updated Oct. 18, 2006). see these pages on the Flash Player 9 Update beta: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashpl...leasenotes.html this one should be fully compatible with Windows Vista and IE7
  24. thanks Petr. I'll try the newer build on my Win98se/ME machines later this week. I've also found a "modded" edition of Usbview.exe here. if you run this version it's version 5.1.2600.1106 but if you click on the About command to display the About dialog box, you will see it has been modified by someone. This specific version of Usbview has the Auto Refresh and Config Descriptors enabled by default. description on this specific version of usbview mentioned here: http://www.k0lee.com/dc3000/usbts.htm
  25. If you have time Petr, can you also patch the Win98 FE (1st edition) version of FDISK.EXE. Look at MS article 263044. File sizes for the Win98FE and Win98SE versions of the FDISK.EXE files are different. Q263044 Fdisk.exe for Win98 FE is 64428 bytes in size while Fdisk.exe for Win98 SE is 64460 bytes in size. However, BOTH Win98 FE and SE versions of original FORMAT.COM file have same identical size [49575 bytes]. It looks like the patched FORMAT.COM file you made CAN be used under both Win98 FE and SE. After making the patched Fdisk.exe file for Win98 FE, the unofficial Fdisk.exe/Format.com patch made by MDGx will have to be re-packaged to include both the FE and SE editions of Fdisk.exe.
