  1. note to the_guy: see my latest post on the "Requesting Windows hotfixes" thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...31579&st=90 apparently there is a revised version of the Q316638 hotfix which has newer Portcls.sys file. you may also ask Petr to help you get the newer hotfix if you cant get it.
  2. the_guy, I wonder if you need the revised Q316638 hotfix for WinME. there are actually two versions of the Q316638 hotfix. Look at MS article 316638: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=316638 and look at this MS site which also mentions the Q316638 hotfix: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/audio/highperf-drv.mspx difference between the two is the version of the portcls.sys file. Original Q316638 patch has the following files listed from the MS Audio Device Performance page: the Q316638 patch listed in MS article 316638 has the following files: The one MDGx has on his site is the original Q316638 with version 4.90.3001 of the Portcls.sys file.
  3. now it has been almost TEN months since version 2.1a of the 98se service pack was released. I hope Gape releases the new version of the SP before the year 2006 actually ends and the 98se SP project is still active. on the other hand, I read in the Win2k Hotstream forum that the unofficial Win2k SP5.1 project has been put on hold: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82148
  4. you may also want to put in as much RAM as possible on the Toshiba Satellite Pro 480CDT notebook computer. how much RAM does the Toshiba 480CDT laptop PC have? right-click on the My Computer on the desktop and choose Properties.
  5. I think after installing Win98 SE, it does not enable the DMA setting for hard drives and CD/DVD drives. that's especially true when performing a CLEAN install of Win98 SE. WAHAHA! NO KIDDING 303! yeah you definitely need to put more RAM into your Compaq PC. 32megs of RAM is now a LOUSY config for Win98, especially when there are large apps installed under Win98. Order some RAM chips online for the Compaq PC and up your RAM to 64MB or more. I just ordered a 64Mb RAM module online for my aunt's laptop PC which has 32 MB of RAM and once I get the module, it'll have a total of 96Mb of RAM and Win98 will run more faster and more efficiently.
  6. uh some people would BEG to DIFFER on what you said of liking IE, wizardofwindows. there ARE some people out there [i'm not one of them] that actually HATE IE and use non-IE browsers like Firefox, Mozilla or Opera. plus IE is much more vulnerable to security problems than Firefox/Mozilla/Opera I only use IE to download some updates at Windows Update
  7. BUT how do you use them? what is the syntax for using the MSPATCHA.DLL file w/out using any third party tools?
  8. Petr too bad the MS06-042 security updates were not revised to include the KB923996 MSHTML.DLL hotfix for XP SP2 and WS2K3 SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923996/ After installing the MS06-042 security patch under WinXP SP2 or Win2003 SP1 and visiting a web page that uses custom pop-ups, IE may unexpectedly close. those experiencing the problem with MS06-042 should request the KB923996 hotfix.
  9. You can remove IE by using IEradicator 2001 from LitePC's web site: http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html I use this to remove IE whenever IE gets screwed up on my machines or if I am unable to un-install IE from Add/Remove programs. note that IEradicator does NOT remove all the IE files completely. It leaves a few of them so that other apps can work correctly. pcalvert has got a point. better to create a separate SP (or more accurately a URP - update rollup pack) for IE6 SP1 instead of including IE6 SP1 updates into the 98se SP so that the 98se SP wont be so bloated.
  10. maybe the Foxit printing problem could be fixed in version 2.0. the beta version of Foxit Reader 2.0 is no longer available. get the official release of Foxit reader 2.0 at the Foxit software downloads page.
  11. latest versions of mspatcha.dll file for Win9x/ME/NT4 (5.2.9354.0) can be found in the IE6 SP1 KB916281 security update. newer than the one found in the Windows Installer 2.0 package for Win9x/ME/NT4.
  12. that's a cheapshot, eidenk! then, FORGET IT! since you say you have learned nothing, then get over it and move on with your life from this thread. The Copy2GB problem is barely a non-issue now under my WinME computer with or without the patch. thanks for the correction, shaddam.
  13. to be more accurate, IE6 SP1 users MUST use IE 5.5 SP2 versions of the BROWSEUI.DLL and BROSELC.DLL files. OR better yet, why not copy, move or delete large amount of files from within File Manager as WinFile does those tasks faster than Windows Explorer. what IE 5.5 DLL files come from IE6 SP1 ME security update, azagahl? Be more specific so you dont confuse some people.
  14. nwpp32.dll file version 4.00.956 should work okay under Win95 OSR2 Petr. MS just forgot to make the 4.00.956 hotfix work under the OSR2 versions.
  15. MSPATCHA.DLL file version 5.2.9354.0 is also included in KB916281 patch for IE6 SP1 for Win98/ME: direct url- http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...0afab75c3a5.exe
  16. MSTASK.DLL version 4.71.1979.1 from NT4 KB841873 patch does NOT work under Win9x, bristols. The mstask.dll files from the ts95.cab & tsnt.cab files are NOT binarilly identical when comparing them with WinDiff file comparison tool. The mstask.dll files from tsnt.cab file of IE6 SP1 setup file (and KB841873 patch) are NT4 specific. AVOID using MSTASK.DLL file from KB841873 patch under Win95/98/ME. MSTASK.DLL version 4.71.1972.1 from TS95.CAB of IE6 SP1 is 233232 bytes in size MSTASK.DLL version 4.71.1972.1 from TSNT.CAB of IE6 SP1 is 222480 bytes in size
  17. you may want to contact the maker of Getright about the problem. contact page: http://www.getright.com/contact.html I use MetaProduct's Download Express program (FREEWARE, NO ADS) as a download accelerator/download manager. Get it here: http://www.metaproducts.com/mp/MetaProduct...oad_Express.htm a more powerful download manager is MetaProduct's Mass Downloader (Shareware) which also downloads audio/video streams and files. other freeware download managers I've found on the web are Star Downloader Free and LeechGet.
  18. Here's what I mean by the picture of Sun Java icon system tray option in Java Control panel applet-
  19. what kind of DVD burner do you have on your machine, Eck? and does it have "buffer underrun protection"? download and run the Nero InfoTool applet from the CDSpeed200.com web site. The InfoTool program will gather specs about your DVD burner and indicate whether it uses Buffer Underrun Protection or not. Many new CD/DVD burners should have buffer underrun protection enabled which reduces the interruptions on burning CDs/DVDs. certainly, heavy hard disk activity may ruin burned CDs/DVDs even when the CD/DVD burners have buffer underrun protection enabled.
  20. note that you MUST re-run ROOTSUPD.EXE to re-install the Root Certificates Update whenever you upgrade or un-install Internet Explorer as the updated certificates may not be retained after upgrading or un-installing IE.
  21. I've followed erpdude8 indications. In slayout2.inf these strings are ok? TWEAKUI.CPL=1 TWEAKUI.HLP=1 TWEAKUI.CNT=1 QFECheck.exe=55 QFECheck.hlp=55 see my latest beta of the 98fe SP 2.x. latest is now beta 5. answer is NO. this is what is listed in the slayout2.inf file in my 98fe SP- QFECHECK.EXE=1,,36864,14eaaa9e QFECHECK.HLP=1,,8042,5c2c43f1 TWEAKUI.CPL=1,,106544,a18fcee TWEAKUI.CNT=1,,5825,7690416b TWEAKUI.HLP=1,,51238,f599b1ba
  22. Open Java control panel, click on Advanced tab, expand the "Miscellaneous" section and check the "Place Java icon in system tray" option (if this option is unchecked, enable it). Click OK, close your web browser and restart it. Now go to the GENS web site and the Java icon should appear.
  23. Links to 98fe SP 2.05 beta 5: <links removed> I'm now getting to a point where future beta releases will be less frequent and will be attending to stuff outside the computer world. note to MDGx: you may want to get the 98fe SP from RapidUpload instead of Mytempdir since RapidUpload is faster.
  24. hey bearsowner, try visiting the GENS emulator web site with Sun Java & any web browser: http://gens.consolemul.com/ I went there with Sun Java and the Java system tray icon appeared in the bottom right-hand corner next to the time. that meant that the version of Sun Java I have installed [1.5.0 update 7] worked.
  25. I don't think the Q250876 hotfix for Win98 is buggy. It works fine. It's the WIN95 version [named KB250876.exe] that will NOT install under the OSR2 versions of Win95. Post these steps for the WIN95 version of Q250876 and remove these steps for Win98 as the WIN98 version of Q250876 works as expected. also the unofficial Jet 4.0 KB910906 patch for Win9x/2000/ME/NT4 does not work. same problem as unofficial KB920670 patch. Change [sourceDiskNames] to [sourceDisksNames] in the 910906.inf file and U910906 patch will work.
