  1. all folders/files you have copied to the hard drive stay there until you delete them
  2. i just got on to microsoft.com
  3. i know some routers can actually block computers from talking to each other... i.e. you may be able to ping them, but not be able to view their shared folders and such. The routers that do have that ability generally have a setting for that. On my router it's called Isolation Mode
  4. if you tested both cables individually and they both work, then the coupler (female to female connector) can be the only culprit. It is definitely possible to have a misconnected pin or something like that in the coupler
  5. found this freeware program finesnmpset... it's really easy to use, so i'll be having some fun w/ that
  6. i was just using it as an example. I deal with a lot of software that uses the java plugin, so that's why i used it. A lot of websites also use macromedia shockwave as well, so it is also why that was mentioned. I think a lot of people put reg tweaks last (including myself) because they do not want the possibility of the value changing because of another program (for example). I suppose depending on the tweaks you were putting in place you could run them at the top.
  7. as a general rule of thumb, you would install system things first, then regular programs. i.e. I would install java2 runtime before I install firefox, so that the java plugin for firefox gets installed properly. Same with shockwave, and any other similar program.
  8. so SNMP... My goal is to write a command file that will ask me if I want to send X or Y value to the device. The device is a power strip that allows me to turn outlets on or off (useful for rebooting hung servers, or network gear) I have the MIB for the device, the only thing I don't know how to write is the actual command to call the SNMP set command. I tried google for some info but had little to no success. Anyone here know how? BTW, i'd prefer to write it in windows as I don't have access to a linux box right now Thanks
  9. by loopback you mean 127.0.0.1 right? I was under the impression it's installed by default
  10. ^^ I'd agree... just leave the serial, and name/organization empty in the winnt.sif... then that's all they have to input to install windows. I don't think most people care about the computername, so if you just leave that value as * it will randomize the name.
  11. i had the same issue at one point as well.. turned out to be a bad install of windows i believe
  12. i believe it's a registry entry, so you would use a program like RegSnap. Take a snapshot while the icon set is Tiles, then change it to icons and snap again. compare the 2 and you'll find the registry entry that sets the icon set as icons. Just add that reg key during your preferred installation method and you're set
  13. i got a bunch... i hate remembering them all, so i use the biopod thing from APC. it's pretty sweet
  14. That looks like a really good laptop, and I've never heard anything really bad about Acer, so I think you should be good with that I've had sucess with Alienware, IBuyPower and Dell laptops. Varied amounts of sucess, but overall I was happy with the purchases.
  15. that's basically the same system I have... good choice with the equipment I have listed in my signature, at full load, the power draw is just under 220 watts (not including the 50watts for the speakers). Idle is just about 200 watts. 300 would do the job, but I'd also recommend a 400 watt because the less the load on your PSU, the cooler and more reliably it runs. I'd recommend Antec, Enermax, Vantec, or Ultra-X (what I'm successfully running)
  16. those are generally definition updates... I was also never able to get Windows Security Center to even recognize corp edition. Does yours?
  17. thanks for the suggestions... i'll check them out
  18. my only reservation using those proggies is that taskkill and pskill are to kill processes, and yes the window that pops up is a process, but it's an explorer.exe process (afaik). You kill that, and you would drop the start bar and everything, and then wait for it to reload. During the process of installing things, that might generate unforseen problems
  19. isn't it just easier to use RyanVM's post SP2 hotfixes pack?
  20. have you checked your system's BIOS? They like to hide little things like enabling digital sound in there
  21. Hi all, i have some avis of home movies on my computer. Before i had a DVD burner, I made them into a bunch of 650-700MB files to fit on a CD... now that i have a DVD burner (and time to deal with it) I'd like to combine them and make DVDs... I used a avi combiner program (can't remember the name) that just combines the 2 or more avi files and makes 1. Well, i figured 700x2 would be about 1.5GB... not so. after combining, the file size is 4GB!! Anyone know of any programs (commercial or free) that can combine avis without spiking the file size? Thanks
  22. @ Mike: unfortunately that won't work. If you do that, setup will create a folder in Documents and Settings called $userprofile$, which won't accomplish what is desired. @ Marthax: Are you using a different My Documents location other than "Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents" ?
  23. if i do have to use ie, i just leave the google one on
