  1. i think amd won by about 10% or better
  2. i store all my diagnostic tools on a thumb drive because I can change and update as often as the tools come out, and not have to burn new discs. I also backup files before burning a new OS on the drive. That way I don't have to worry about my user losing their files
  3. i think geocities.com still does free web hosting as well
  4. i completely agree with jondercik... considering all the bloatware dell installs on their systems, you could take a faster dell (on paper) and the "slower" alienware would still be a better PC. I'd be nervous buying an Alienware now... aren't they one of the only PC manufacturers left that has a call center in the US? I could easily see Dell moving their CC over to india. I can see why both companies would make this move, but I think alienware just lost some "street cred" w/ the enthusiast crowd.
  5. Is there a particular reason for the server other than to block websites? If that's the case, many general routers have that same functionality, and are generally cheaper
  6. have you tried setting up a new network connection? that's usually where you select the type of service
  7. have you tried a temp monitoring program? i think a lot of motherboard manufacturers provide them on their CDs, or you can find them on the web. Is motherboard monitor still around? you could try that one
  8. let me give you some background info on our setup, then I'll let you know what I'm looking to accomplish. Hopefully you'll be able to give me some guidance. We have 5 dumb terminals hooked to an IBM AS400 that acts as our accounting/order entry server. We have 5 typical PCs for everything else. We're looking at replacing those terminals with desktops, as we're slowly migrating to a point 'n click interface for our business. Part of the migration to the new desktops will be locking them down. The biggest requirement is that the people who worked on those terminals not be given any additional reason to slack off from work (i.e. read MSFN all day ). The goal is that I want to lock down any request to leave the internal network and go outside. Everything those people need will be hosted on our network, so there's no reason for them to go outside. Do any of you know of and/or reccomend any software to accomplish that? We don't have (and probably never will) a domain controller, though I don't know if you could set that up in group policies anyway. my searches of the web weren't that successful, so any light anyone could shed would be appreciated.
  9. i use DD-wrt, however the only issue i have is that it doesn't handle QoS under heavy download very well. Everything else about it is fantastic
  10. if you want to make sure no more entries get added to your hosts file, you can make it read-only right-click it and go to properties, check the read-only box, and hit OK
  11. have you tried this from a command window: ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns
  12. try to group everything together, then velcro-wrap, or tie-wrap it off
  13. ping is a basic way to test communication between 2 network sources from a command window (start -> run -> cmd) type "ping <computername>"
  14. have you edited any of the files, most notably ntoskernel.exe? what are the complete specs? what kind of power supply is in it? I've seen weak voltage cause spontaneous reboots, especially since booting windows is somewhat hard-drive intensive.
  15. what does it say when you do that from the laptop?
  16. so what's the story? was it a legit request to that IP or something more nefarious? inquiring minds want to know
  17. What routers are you working with, m3n70r? I've never even heard of a consumer router that could limit the number of attached PCs unless you limited the DHCP scope. I doubt it's specifically because you're mixing win98 and XP... it's more likely something that's running on one of the PCs that slowing the network down.
  18. no idea... how's your network set up? i.e. is there a router, internet connection sharing, etc.
  19. do you have any programs running that would want to connect to that IP? Does that program tell you where that connection request originated?
  20. I'm not sure at what point the My Documents folder is created, and I don't see any reference to it in winnt.sif or anywhere else, so my guess is that you'll have to import a registry key to change the target. What i would do is run regshot with the folder at it's default location, and then again after you move it, and see what changed. Then you can make a .reg file with the keys you need and import them during your install.
  21. (In XP) Go to Control Panel >> Network Connections. Right-Click your network connection icon, and go to Properties. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and just beneath that click on Properties. Click the radio button next to Use the Following IP address. Enter in the IP you wish to use, and the subnet mask. You don't need anything for default gateway, and you don't need to enter any DNS info in.
  22. you'll need to set up Internet Connection Sharing... and I have had 0 success setting that up. if you can, good for you
  23. if it's a huge difference, just go the 250gb. it's still a good amt of storage space
