I shouldn't trust Brave these days. I discovered it requests "GetFirmwareType", GetFirmwareType - "Retrieves the firmware type of the local computer". https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winbase/nf-winbase-getfirmwaretype Why would a browser that declares itself "privacy oriented" want to know your exact firmware? Yes, it's for only one purpose, to bind your account to the PC you're on. More and more sophisticated tracking.3 points

I saw the new Dune: Part Two at the cinema last weekend. (For those who missed Part One in 2021, a Blu-ray/DVD is available at Walmart for about the price of a movie ticket.) The two films by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve comprise the best screen adaptation there is of Frank Herbert’s bestselling 1965 novel. (I’m a fan of David Lynch, but his 1984 film Dune was simply too short to do justice to the book.) Villeneuve has become a leading director of science fiction films in recent years, having made Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 before embarking on his two-part Dune project. He reportedly has plans for a third film based on Frank Herbert’s sequel Dune Messiah. My old favorite filmmaker James Cameron needs to work harder if he wants to stay on top in science fiction films! Here’s a trailer for Dune: Part Two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2Qp5pL3ovA2 points

Update notification! That's simply great. Just posted I can already announce an update. RogueKiller Anti-Malware has been updated to version 15.15.3 on 11.03.2024. Therefore, I've updated my new article. and my list. So, my statement that this programme is updated on a regular base seems to be correct. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

I completely agree. Image how difficult will be for somebody, who has never used Pentium I with Windows 98, to understand how fast Windows was back in the day in a hardware that was 100 times slower than the one we have nowadays. Now... ¿how is this possible? or ¿what is happening? Possible solution: ¿Time to get back to SERVICE PACKS? It feels like a BETA OS Since Windows 10 1607. Windows as a Service isn't the path to follow, MS. This is completely no sense: https://winclassic.net/thread/1652/list-metro-ified-components-windows Current Windows status can be only understood in one way: nowadays hardware, even the cheapest laptop, comes with tons of RAM and disk space to waste... It's a bit sad how all has changed after w8.1.... we are in the last days of computers. Sometimes I think if MS is only testing Windows on a highend PC, even if this is true, the OS feels like a beta; slow gui, lag... tons of background processes... It was one day an (almost) perfect Operating System and not this kind of beta "Service"1 point

Supposing is unfortunately never enough. And what about Windows XP 32-bit? Windows Vista is not the topic here. You stated in a previous post: Which version of Panda Free Antivirus and which operation system did you refer to? You surely know this thread is about Windows XP. Such unspecific statements only confuse the readers of this thread. More details, please!1 point

Update notification! Panda Free Antivirus has been updated on 27.12.2023 and is now of version 22.02.01. Thus, I'll update my article and my list in terms of Panda Free Antivirus. Maybe. one of you can test the new version first of all under Windows XP SP3 32 bit to be sure it is still compatible as advertised here: https://www.pandasecurity.com/en/homeusers/windows-antivirus/ This is a quotation from this website: And again, such a confirmation would be great as we all already know, the proof is in the pudding. On one XP partition, I am using Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522, and on the other one, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro 1.75.0.1300 due to the lifetime license I own for many years. If I didn’t have this lifetime license and preferred a free antimalware programme, I would choose Panda Free Antivirus on Windows XP.1 point

Yep! However, I deactivated the file PromoUtil.exe in my installation when I used this security programme. Less pop-ups and less RAM consumption. The problem with all recent 360 Total Security versions is the quality of their scanners since they don't use Avira and Bitdefender scan engines any longer but unfortunately their own ones, 360 Cloud Scan Engine, 360 QVMII AI Engine, QEX and KunPeng. Read this review here: https://www.safetydetectives.com/best-antivirus/360-total-security/ And once again, please provide more information when you do a request! In details, why my Vista Nvidia drivers porting is a success? Because they had to let the old code from Windows 7 still be there, and Windows 7 parts are similar to the ones of Vista, despite being of much lower quality, poorly written code parts. Again, it's all public knowledge, anyone (even a bit knowledgeable) can check. For XP one would need to write new drivers from scratch. Period.1 point
-
I explain with very simple words. There can't be "porting" or "modding" of existing drivers, be it AMD or Nvidia, XP code (along with the code that was bearing older cards gens) was simply removed. It's public knowledge, and this one of the reasons why you all don't see "backports".1 point

i had some time to look at it his function is bugged up basicly he write it himself "// hacky but works: small number is command id, large is submenu (a pointer)"" that indicates he tryed to trick it and had to do "hacky solutions" he use a endless while true loop with ends escapes and continues, also goto´s,calls to the same functions in a function, and then seperators for his menu to fix how he called it "bad seperators" this ended up in a os specific solution you useally dont do that because the operating system can might change the relevant codes over time (such as 7 to 10, or 98 to nt) - something like this already happend in the past but the solution to this problem is possible as the author use multiple fixes all over around (probaly to compensate the problems) it is easy to add that fix - anyways it actually was a bit weird to find it out in win10 its just a flag, that was found like very quickly - but no in xp it didnt do that and gave very weird results even turned off xp was working ok while on 10 it did what it suppose to do - it was turned off as the code suppose to was changed to let me know if it works now! the .avif file (and heic) format dont work for me, neither on xp nor on 10 nor on 7 (both unchanged from the official download page and the changed version) https://www.file-upload.net/download-15277606/SumatraPDF_WINXP_3.5.2_3.zip.html https://www.mediafire.com/file/a4mtyf33ozs6q63/SumatraPDF_WINXP_3.5.2_3.zip/file1 point

Thanks for your appreciation! But unfortunately, others and me can't see it in my posts above ... If you don't understand what I wrote about the valuation of technical contents (which is a kind of support of authors), why don't you use an online translation service? For example, DeepL? The English I wrote was crystal clear. Anyway! The fact that I even have to mention this grievance in terms of valuation should actually not really be necessary ... By the way, a restart feature is trivial and easy to implement into my toggle button. I already did it, and the modified toggle button works perfectly.1 point
-
Ok! Very good! My statement was: Your answer is: What do you think? What can you do here to support an author of a thread with technical contents, to show him your genuine interest, to appreciate his work he has already done, and to ensure that he is motivated to continue all this and make him generating new, requested code for someone with whom he has never had contact, especially if he shares his work for free? Truth be told, this kind of support I mean has unfortunately diminished a lot or has always been sparse for real work with technical content and is, however, made in droves for every inanity or, rather, for every crap, especially non-technical one, in this forum nowadays. And what I mean, of course, should only be done if the technical contents of this author are also worth it. Any ideas?1 point

I read your first post again and noticed some misunderstandings. The extension Custom Buttons, which I uploaded here, is required for installing custom buttons, but itself cannot toogle anything. For toggling a Boolean variable, you need to install one of my custom buttons Toggle CSP or Toggle media.autoplay.enabled and have to modify its code which you already seem to have done such as described in this post: And, it definitely works. I know that because I've created and tested these custom buttons. Just to clarify, you won't find any documents about these custom buttons even if the old custom buttons forum was still alive. These buttons never existed before. I created them, saved them as an XML file and uploaded them for my readers. And now, you would appreciate additional code for an immediate, automatical restart of Serpent 52 after toggling the variable browser.tabs.remote.force-enable using my custom button. You need this restart to apply the toggled setting in terms of the multiprocess mode. And, you like the extension Custom Buttons, my self-created custom buttons for toggling a Boolean variable and maybe, this thread, too. Am I right so far? Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point
-
I checked my browsers referring to the pref browser.tabs.remote.force-enable. In New Moon 28, it is locked. Therefore, it can't be toggled there. In Serpent 52, Serpent 55 and Firefox 52.9.0 ESR, this pref doesn't exist at all. So, I have to ask you in which browser you actually want to toggle this pref. Or, did you create this pref yourself in Serpent or Firefox? Anyway! I do have a solution to implement minimal code for an immediate, automatical restart of New Moon or Pale Moon and a bit more code in the case of Firefox or Serpent (Basilisk) after toggling a Boolean pref. But first, I need an answer and some more detailed information about your configuration (browser, OS). Also I should mention that I don't use multi-process mode, and my system is Windows XP Professionaö SP3 + POSReady 32Bit with a single-core CPU. At the moment, I can test it only on this machine. Kind regards, AstroSkipper1 point

Toggle media.autoplay.enabled - A custom button for toggling the Boolean variable media.autoplay.enabled created by AstroSkipper The custom button Toggle media.autoplay.enabled is the same button as Toggle CSP except the changes I already described in my previous post. It's an example how easy another Boolean variable can be toggled by this button. And, I created this version at the very special request of @Mathwiz. I also changed the button images, of course. A green image always means the value true, a red image the value false. Of course, this can be changed and adapted to the user's needs at any time. Here is the download link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/lvsq0ss3xuinxwe/Toggle_media.autoplay.enabled.xml/file Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper1 point

Thank you for bringing this up! This always irked me too. I always ended up disabling the display driver helper service after setting up dual monitors. Edit: You WILL need to brute force the INF file in order to work as Blackwingcat does, otherwise it will tell you there is no file that contains any information on your hardware, so it pretends not to see it However, last official drivers? Which drivers are you using? I'm just curious. As I was poking around tonight, I discovered a gem, a very interesting gem that even Blackwingcat doesn't have on his blog. While he may have unofficial drivers on his site, I found a very recent (um, 9 years ago recent lol ) NVIDIA driver that actually DOES officially support Windows 2000. https://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-257.21-whql-driver.html https://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-258.96-whql-driver.html (Discovered after posting this, true last official NVIDIA Windows 2000 release) Really? An official 2xx.xx driver from NVIDIA? Why, yes it is! How many people know about this? If you have a Quadro, you're in even better position for a newer driver! https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/25619/en-us Whaaaaaa????? An OFFICIALLY LISTED Windows 2000 driver!!!! However, it only lists Quadros as supported and NOT GeForce. The files are a bit smaller in this release as well but it leaves me wondering if we can break into these drivers and mod them to support newer things. I think I'm a lot more impressed by the GeForce/Quadro release. And no, there is no need for unofficial kernels either, it works on vanilla Win2k.These gems are hard to find because of the way the driver search works, it really doesn't want you to find these older drivers, nor are they even on the older archive page. So I'd really suggest grabbing it while you can before it so happens to disappear. The best card these drivers can support are a GTX 480 which I don't think is anything at all to sneeze at. And yes, it supports dual monitors out of the box too. Release 260.89 seems to be the first Windows XP exclusive driver, but interestingly enough keeps the win2kdualview in its driver file, so *it* may still work with a little bit of brute force. Edit: The INF file will not work without modding it like Blackwingcat does. Add/remove hardware complains there's no file that contains information on your hardware, like it pretends it doesn't exist. If I wasn't so happy with my current installation, I'd totally try it out. Maybe someone else with a sandbox wants to try it out? Heck, it's so close and supports all the same hardware, you could probably just copy the INF file from 258.96 and edit the header information for the 260.89 release and it would possibly still work? Although it seems to be the first driver pack that has the "new" layout in files/folders. No joke, no mods, straight off NVIDIA's website.1 point
