  1. Nah not true. Latest Chromium Build working fine on 8.1: imgur.com/a/lE6buzI As much as I respect @D.Draker for all of your work and effort, I never really got your intention, of why you want to see Windows 7 and 8.1 getting removed from the Main OS Section from MSFN. No one really complains about this. Why even "downgrade" them to that section. They cannot be compared to Vista, especially Windows 7, since they are more popular and many programs still support them. I got that you dont like Windows 7 and 8, but it is really not up to you to decide which OS is "worth" staying in a section or not. Regards

  2. and now they merged dbsoft's PR, but martok's is not yet. I'll wait until martok's PR merged and maybe creating a "Labor Day" edition builds after that. P.S.: with some preliminary tests, it seems that dynamic import is working, at least in Misskey instances UI. No it seems to be illusion, it throws `SyntaxError: await is a reserved identifier` in moebius NOT in UXP and I can't figure what cause this. and for now I'm porting them to moebius, which is time-consuming since I need to test-compile each rev to ensure it is at least buildable,

  4. I did some research and discovered that there have been no Spectre and Meltdown kernel patches released for Core2Duo CPUs, so I was out of luck. As for the the POSReady 2009 updates mentioned here I am not convinced that they are intended to resolve the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. KB4056615 is covered by CVE-2018-0748 whose summary is as follows: KB4056615 has been replaced by KB4463103 which is covered by CVE-2018-8411 whose summary is as follows: and is also covered by CVE-2018-8330 whose summary is as follows: I have KB4463103 included as an update on my system and tests for Spectre and Meltdown mitigation showed that there was nothing. I am completely unprotected.

  5. Congratulations on opening the thread, now we can make a nice list in the header. Perhaps the disadvantage is that in search engines users will look for the word antivirus, not the word malware, although I don't see a very much problem. Here are a few programs to add to the alphabetical list. I order them like I have these on my computer, rate these however you like. 6. Antimalware, firewall, and other security programs for Windows XP working in 2023 and hopefully beyond I hereby open a new thread on the topic of security programs for Windows XP. I have been thinking about that for a longer time, and then I decided to tackle this project. Windows XP is a very old operating system and a deeper knowledge of how to make it more secure is very important in my opinion. Therefore, I think it makes sense to get an overview of all the security programs still available for Windows XP. The thread "Which Antiviruses are Known for a Fact to be Working on XP SP3 as of 2019?", where I have previously written frequently about antivirus programs, has become rather bloated and confusing due to many informationless posts, is mainly focused on the topic of antivirus programs for Windows XP and has been completely unstructured from the very beginning. It is good to have such a thread full of different information for reference but there are many posts either outdated, incomplete or off-topic. Therefore, I have decided to start a completely different thread from scratch. I deliberately chose the term antimalware in the title of this topic. In these days, most so-called antivirus programs can not only identify computer viruses, but also trojans, worms, rootkits, exploits, spyware, and so on. Generally speaking: a virus is a malware, but a malware is not always a virus. Therefore, malware is a generic term for any malicious software, including viruses. For many years now, the so-called antivirus programs have actually been antimalware programs. In any case, this new topic here is about antimalware, firewall and other security programs for Windows XP. Under the term other security programs, I include among others security suites like internet security and total security, antivirus, antispyware, anti-rootkit, anti-exploit, online and offline scanner, ad blocker, protection layer, virtualization, security check and control programs and so on that make the use of Windows XP safer. And to avoid any misunderstanding, the main focus in this thread is on the concept of security. Those security programs that have been officially classified as insecure or not trustworthy are not the subject of consideration here, of course. Furthermore, many of these security programs can no longer be clearly classified in one of these categories due to their multifunctionality. I therefore define the following categories and their abbreviations: AM+ = Antimalware program with real-time protection AM- = Antimalware program without real-time protection SP = Specialized program (focused on one main antimalware function) IS = Internet Security TS = Total Security ON = Online scanner OF = Offline scanner AB = Ad blocker FW = Firewall VP = Virtualization program PL = Protection layer program SC = Security check program CP = Control program MF = Multifunctional program In addition, for the sake of simplicity, I define the following licence types and their abbreviations, reduced to the essentials: C = Commercial (any payment software including shareware) F = Free D = Donationware O = Open source In the second post of this thread, I will provide and maintain an alphabetical list of working antimalware, firewall, and other security programs for Windows XP which were each presented in a corresponding post here. This list has the following columns: Name, Version, Type, Date and Link. Name means the name of the program, Version means its last/latest version, Type means its license type, Date means its last/latest date of release or creation (in some cases, there is no date of release available anymore) and Link means the link to its corresponding post here in this thread. I will only include programs in this list that receive updates in some form, be it program updates, definition updates or database updates. With the exception, of course, that there are also programs that do not necessarily need such updates. In the third post of this thread, I will create and maintain an alphabetical list of programs that need to be tested for compatibility, features and support or whose installers have been lost and therefore could not be tested. In the fourth post of this thread, I will create an alphabetical list of programs that have recently been abandoned or should be avoided. Some of them should only be used for a while or be avoided due to security reasons. This project is very extensive and involves a lot of work. In-depth research in particular is very time-consuming, but necessary. So be patient, especially if the list of programs fills up slowly! As always: Good things come to those who wait. And just for clarification, I will not check all the programs myself to see if they can be installed properly and work, of course. Here, other members can make a perfect contribution with their knowledge or experiences already made. Furthermore, all the programs I have listed are not necessarily to be understood as recommendations. Basically, they are simply options that are still available for Windows XP. Because we all know that most manufacturers of security software have long since given up on Windows XP. If I personally consider a program to be good, I will express this in its relevant post. More about that here: Any discussions, questions or suggestions about security programs for Windows XP are explicitly welcome. But one thing must be very clear, everything should relate to this topic. Just for clarification, insulting, provocative or completely off-topic posts (especially about operating systems other than Windows XP) will not be tolerated. That means, please stay on topic! This thread is intended to be a well-structured source of information where readers can get ideas on how to make their old Windows XP a bit more secure. If you like this thread, or you find it interesting and helpful, I would appreciate any contribution, be it a comment, a like or an upvote. Thanks for your interest! Windows XP forever! Kind regards, AstroSkipper

  11. It sounds to me like @Cixert could install Malwarebytes Free without removing Avast, as you instructed on the previous page!? It will be interesting to see which vendor cuts off definitions for their legacy version first. Cixert prefers a very old version of Avast that no longer receives definitions anyway!? And don’t worry: I would also advise against purchasing a “Premier” license for Avast in 2023!

  12. From my testing, VxKex prevented the "The procedure entry point SetProcessMitigationPolicy could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll." error from appearing when opening Chromium 115 on Windows 7, but Chromium 115 still doesn't start. Adding --no-sandbox made no effect.

  13. Is that so!? I used Avast Free 18.8 (with real-time protection on) together with Malwarebytes Free 2.2.1 (no real-time protection - but unfortunately no more definition updates for that excellent old version) on Vista x86 for quite some time without any issues. (I always avoided Malwarebytes 3 due to lukewarm reviews of their attempt to become a “real antivirus.”) Frankly, this topic reads too much like an advertisement for 5-year-old Malwarebytes 3.5.1. Ironically, one place on the internet where Malwarebytes is not recommended for Windows XP is Malwarebytes Forums. In November 2022, an XP user stated his intention to purchase Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1 if he could be reassured about the continued availability of definitions. Forum regular Porthos advised, “save your money [for] a new computer,” while Root Admin AdvancedSetup flatly stated, “I’m sorry...but Malwarebytes 3 is not supported any longer” (which is technically true, although I don’t doubt that you are still getting definitions for the time being). The poster then mentioned that he was running Avast, and the Root Admin replied, “Yes...if you wish to run on XP then Avast is probably one of the few choices you have left.” https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/292465-winxp-32-malwarebytes-3512522-malware-signatures/

  14. Only to understand how these highly sophisticated soviet/ex-DDR communist agents operate: 1) they wait until you go visit your Bavarian friends 2) they break into your house (not necessarily a fortress house) 3) they rely on autorun to infect your PC 4) when (if) you wisely disabled autorun they go away muttering the equivalent (in Russian or German) of "D@mn, we can't do anything, autorun is disabled". jaclaz

  15. That's something I always love to hear--glad to know you're keeping your P4 going! I've been saying it for a long time: with XP or 7 and a relatively modern browser, a Pentium 4 can still fly even in 2023. Even 8.x and earlier 10 releases (I recommend LTSB 2015 and 2016) also run quite well on a P4...of course, when you get into the more recent builds, P4s start to struggle a bit. I use a Pentium E6800 (basically a stripped down Core 2 Duo) with 4GB of RAM...a trusty, reliable LGA775-era machine that continues to get the job done for me every day. Getting back on topic, I've used 360 builds for years and have never had any major performance issues on my PC...of course, more recent builds run much better now that they've been properly rebased. Provided you have applied the same performance tweaks to both machines, I can only presume there's some kind of built-in 'graceful fallback' system that allows 360 to run better on older hardware (though I strongly doubt that's the case). I have no doubt that with a fresh installation of XP SP3, properly tweaked for performance, 360 should soar like an eagle on the specs you've provided. If can run well as it does on my E6800, it should be even better on a C2Q. I hope this is at least somewhat useful! And for @NotHereToPlayGames: thanks for continuing to share your customized 360 builds! I'm currently using v13.5.2036, (regular) rebuild 1--paired with Roy's latest Serpent 52 build it completes a devastating one-two punch for solid modern browsing in XP. Stable, fast, and still very capable!

  19. You're welcome! The list with working security programs is most important and will be maintained by me as regularly as possible. I also count on members who notice that a program has been updated or abandoned. When I created this thread, I already added the tag "Antivirus" and others, so the search function should be able to find my thread. Therefore, it shouldn't actually be a problem. Thank you very much! Most of your listed programs are already on my internal list, though. But, any help is welcome! Thanks again! Much appreciated!

  20. I have installed Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522 on my Windows XP computer and use its real-time protection. There is a three-layer protection: Web protection and Exploit protection are permanently activated, Malware protection only if I surf unknown or a bit dirty websites. So my real-time protection is a bit on-demand due to my underperforming computer.

  23. This unwanted activation check after removing all TechSmith software has nothing to do with any TechSmith update service, it's probably just because you didn't properly uninstall all leftover video & audio codecs from a commercial TechSmith program. Therefore everytime a leftover full version of a TechSmith codec is initialized (for video playback or for enumeration of its capabilities) it becomes part of the process that tried to play a video or audio file. And so you end up with firefox.exe trying to connect to techsmith servers. The videohelp.com website has a good index of codec tools such as CodecTweakTool or Win7 DS Filter Tweaker to inspect this issue deeper. GraphStudioNext cans also diagnose & manage video codecs & video filters. There's even a dedicated section for this in SysInternals' Autoruns utility. And none of any parent-based firewall will help to block this unless it also has HIPS features for blocking unwanted modules injection & loading within trusted processes. If a firewall supports both parent/caller process inspection & HIPS it's all good. Otherwise firefox.exe could be called by explorer.exe (both trusted) and yet you still end up with firefox.exe loading that leftover TechSmith codec everytime it wants your system to play a media file, which causes unwanted connections.

  24. I know that the WinCenterTitle project on GitHub hooks DirectWrite calls from uDWM.dll to modify the way window titles are rendered, and its 1.1 version works on Windows 7. And for the font rendering itself, it has to do with DirectWrite functions. For the text itself (not just font rendering) it has to do with ctfmon / CTF DLLs. Now something interesting is the MacType project on GitHub: https://github.com/snowie2000/mactype It changes the way fonts are rendered in Windows, it mentions Windows 10 compatibility (so not just Windows 10 only) and there's that line mentioning colored fonts support. Can you try MacType even if you don't need Mac-like antialiasing, then see if your Segoe UI font starts supporting colors on Windows 7? If it works, then it's a good start. You might also need an up-to-date 'Segoe UI Emoji' font, or perhaps even taking Windows 8.1 copies of Segoe UI fonts and merging Segoe UI Emoji codepages in them with FontForge/FontCreator. This way all apps will start being able to display Emojis. Might even do this with Tahoma, Consolas, Lucida Console & MS Shell Dlg fonts for full Emoji support.

  25. The current (Firefox Quantum) state is, that I can run Firefox 54 - 59, even Thunderbird 68 or Mypal68 in the background with no errors unfortunately still without (G)UI. The initialisation of the GUI is somehow skipped/bypassed. I can assume, that the InitOnce functions, ConditionVariables functions, SRWLock functions play a role here, but that isn't knowledge and I can be completely wrong. I'm not a programmer/coder. Formerly we've seen such "no UI" behaviour with Opera Presto 12.10+, too. In the case of Mypal68, one thought was maybe Win ME/98/KernelEx can't handle the XP compatible "unused chromish code" Feodor2 uses for multiprocess handling https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal68/issues/71 . Upon request Feodor2 advised me to search for changes between 54a1 nightly builds of 11 February and 10 February 2017. This "no UI" problem occurs for the first time with the build of 11 February. However, this is difficult for me, when I basically have no real approach. There are a lot of displacements and changes. Currently I'm stuck and can't get any further.

I have tested this version on 2 computers. 1- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 DDR 2 800mhz 4 GiB RAM I open 32 tabs at the same time and the computer reaches 4 GiB RAM, at which point everything slows down having to work with virtual memory. 2- Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz DDR 333 Mhz 2 GiB RAM I open 64 tabs at a time and the computer only reaches 1.3 GiB RAM so it still works perfectly. I have already found in other versions of 360 Extreme Explorer that working with faster computers gives more problems than benefits...

  28. Their feature updates were very disruptive and unnecessary, nearly everyone of them would break at least one or two frequently used programs and then I'd have to wait for the kindness of the developer to fix it. Security updates is all we need. Like you said, let the user configure the OS the way they want.
    1 point
  29. Agreed! Operating Systems should not have "features" - NONE. If I want a "snipping tool", I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want a "firewall", I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want an antivirus "defender", I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want a "candy crush" kiddy game, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want "3D" paint or printer apps, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want "people" contacts right on the taskbar, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want to "share" files, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want an all-in-one sytem-level "Cortana" tracking, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want to "sync" files, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. If I want my Start Menu to feed me advertisements, I'll add it myself from available third-party apps. The Operating System should just "operate", bloatfree. Something like that...

However, after I installed my GTX 770 drivers (both 355.98 and 368.81), I rebooted, and it just hangs at the XP boot screen. Oddly enough, sometimes when I say "Last known good config", it boots perfectly, even with my GPU drivers working! But, it is not consistant, and for the most part, it does not even work (does the same thing). Even safe mode doesn't boot at times!
