I found that there are ultimately four reasons why Chromium is broken on NT 6.x: 1. New imports in kernel32 and userenv. They can all be stubbed, not hard to fix. (Vista/7; 8.x has them) 2. Use of job object APIs in ways that are only supported on 8.x (without sandbox) and 10 (with sandbox) 3. Use of new NtQueryInformationProcess class for enumerating process handles; if it can't be used, the content process will be terminated (8.0 and below, sandbox only) 4. Use of new DirectWrite factories, like IDWriteFactory3, which was introduced in Windows 10 #1 is taken care of, I'm getting there with #2 and then I should be able to do #3. #4's solution is actually quite simple; copy over a Windows 10 DWrite.dll to use with Chromium using DLL redirection methods (I used 10.0.17763.1 and I think 10240 and up should work too). Then patch these DLL names in the import table with a hex editor or CFF explorer: api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll -> kernel32.dll api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-2.dll -> kernel32.dll This is sufficient to run the latest Chromium browser snapshot on Windows 8: Right now there are truly missing functions on Windows Vista and 7, in api-ms-win-core-delayload-l1-1-0.dll and api-ms-win-core-delayload-l1-1-1.dll. Some of those return function pointers so they can't be stubbed.4 points

I got COVID19 And it is YOUR fault by Vinay Prasad Dec 22, 2022 Dear Readers, After 3 years of faithfully covering COVID 19 from my side of a zoom meeting, having done everything right, recently, the worst news imaginable struck. (See picture). I got COVID! But most importantly, here is what I want you to know: it is entirely your fault! How did I get COVID? I got it from a MAGA republican! I was minding my own business at a holiday party, wearing a tight-fitting n95 and googles, as I have done for 2 years, and will continue for 45 more, when a MAGA republican approached me with drinks. I could tell he was MAGA because he hadn’t laminated his vaccine card and tied it to a string to wear around his neck. “Want a drink?” “No I can’t” I mumbled through my mask “Why are you wearing a mask?” he asked “Because I voted for Biden,” I replied “What’s that underneath it” he asked “That’s a cloth mask to keep my mask clean” I said “Where is your face-shield?” he asked “Right here,” I said reaching upwards, but nothing was there. Waves of panic began to fill my chest, where had it gone?”... ... “Its here if you want one,”... ... MORE: https://vinayprasadmdmph.substack.com/p/i-got-covid192 points

I saw three or four articles claiming that Google themselves suggest users to use a different browser instead of using their own browser with the --no-sandbox switch. BUT this doesn't really say much, in my opinion. Malware/Virus advocates basically make the same claim about running a computer without anti-malware/anti-virus. Yet I've not ran either, not even "on-demand" scans, in over 15+ years - and I have never been hit with malware or virus! It's about knowing what to click and what not to click, what web sites to trust and what web sites not to trust, when to allow javascript, when to block javascript, et cetera. I myself would use this switch IF my fonts disappeared as often as it seems to for others AND if the switch resulted in lower RAM (which was not the case when I measured on XP x64, but I only took one comparison instead of an average of several). I myself would NOT use the "Spectre mitigation" switch IF it did not result in Cloudflare capcha issues (because that switch does lower RAM).2 points

French scientists divert lightning strikes using a weather-controlling super laser Jan 17, 2023 The laser is so powerful it can divert lightning (Picture: SWNS) Scientists in France have created a way to divert lightning strikes using a weather-controlling super laser. Researchers with the Polytechnic Institute of Paris guided the strikes from thunderclouds to places where they don’t cause damage. The team says the new technique could save power stations, airports, launchpads, and other buildings from disaster. The system creates a virtual lightning rod, metal conductors that intercept flashes and guide their currents into the ground. “The findings extend the current understanding of laser physics in the atmosphere and may aid in the development of novel lightning protection strategies,” says corresponding author Dr. Aurelien Houard, according to a statement from SWNS. The five-ton device is about the size of a large car and fires up to a thousand pulses per second. The scientists installed it near a telecommunications tower in the Swiss Alps – which is struck by lightning around 100 times a year. Yeah good to separate it II think as why I left mental health sites as most people would write at their low spot and during crisis and people would support them but being around people always down brings you down, now don't get me wrong, friendship is a (supposed to be) two-way street and one-sided I can accept https://www.wikihow.com/Handle-a-Fair-Weather-Friendship fairweather friends can be good and I feel best when I helping somebody else and then I feel better but in the end I tend to fail others and only upset and disappoint people because people have expectations and when you expected something and that doesn't happen, you know, so put that in your pipe and smoke it. Medication was not supposed to be long periods of time and its a roller coaster better than now wallow and get outside and fresh air which I don't do much anymore. I eat just fairly well comparative. I do agree that its a cycle and I've paid for my doctors to renovate their houses many times over. Well, actually just a saying as I don't have any credis and I could never afford to pay my medical bills. I also don't get quality (not quantity either) sleep. Worry and the mind won't even calm down because, I don't know, I, just am not sure.1 point

Please use code tags. Your list is a bit radical. Most of them are empty folder or space gain is minimal. Deleting wbem folder saves some space but will break all applications that uses WMI. Downlevel folder should be save, if recall correctly it's only be used while servicing from older WinOS. (like Win7/8 uses dism to add drivers to offline Win10/11 system)1 point

Mine used to also. For me, the fix was to KEEP the two swiftshader folder .dll files. But do note that the same two .dll files (by name, not by version) used to exist in the root folder also - perhaps some computers need the root folder .dll files and other computers need the swiftshader .dll files and still other computers need none of them.1 point

New Horizons Jan 14, 2016 Possible Ice Volcano on Pluto Has the ‘Wright Stuff’ Wright Mons in Color. This composite image of a possible ice volcano on Pluto includes pictures taken by the New Horizons spacecraft’s Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on July 14, 2015, from a range of about 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometers), showing features as small as 1,500 feet (450 meters) across. Sprinkled across the LORRI mosaic is enhanced color data from the Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC), from a range of 21,000 miles (34,000 kilometers) and at a resolution of about 2,100 feet (650 meters) per pixel. The entire scene is 140 miles (230 kilometers) across. Credits: NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI Scientists with NASA’s New Horizons mission have assembled this highest-resolution color view of one of two potential cryovolcanoes spotted on the surface of Pluto by the New Horizons spacecraft in July 2015. This feature, known as Wright Mons, was informally named by the New Horizons team in honor of the Wright brothers. At about 90 miles (150 kilometers) across and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) high, this feature is enormous. If it is in fact a volcano, as suspected, it would be the largest such feature discovered in the outer solar system. Mission scientists are intrigued by the sparse distribution of red material in the image and wonder why it is not more widespread. Also perplexing is that there is only one identified impact crater on Wright Mons itself, telling scientists that the surface (as well as some of the crust underneath) was created relatively recently. This is turn may indicate that Wright Mons was volcanically active late in Pluto’s history. Here: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/possible-ice-volcano-on-pluto-has-the-wright-stuff1 point

What happens when you install the USB drivers for Windows? Booting Win98 from USB uses BIOS to provide the USB drive as drive C:. When you install USB drivers, it will cause problems. So, you could just never use USB. But if you have enough memory, - You could setup Win98se on the computer, drivers and all - Reduce it in size, unless you have a lot of memory - Create a harddrive img or vhd file large enough to hold your Windows install. - Use Virtualbox or something to make the harddrive image a system disk, using a Win98 floppy image. (Create one from your install, if you installed any update that modified MsDos 7 Boot files.) - Copy you Windows installation to the harddrive image. (Do not overwrite MsDos 7 boot files.) - Format your USB drive as FAT32. - Install Grub4Dos to the USB drive. - Then configure Grub4Dos to enable USB support and boot the Win98 harddrive image from memory. Every time you shutdown any changes will be lost. You can get around this by installing the HxD hex editor, and using it to copy the entire drive image to a new file. You do this "while" Windows is running. Then you swap the saved image with the new one you just created. You do this before shutdown or reboot. Some changes try to reboot Windows when they are finished. Like installing DirectX. Most of the time you are given a prompt, with an "OK" button. Run HxD and save the image before clicking the "OK" prompt. If you are given no prompt, you'll need to modify your harddrive boot image to start in Safe mode, on next boot. Then boot the harddrive image in VirtualBox or something. Finally, install whatever caused a reboot without prompting you first. As an additional tip, use or create portable applications. Also install those portable application to you USB drive, not the Windows harddrive image. That is, unless you have a huge amount of memory. You'll want to set a permanent drive letter for you USB drive, from the Drive's "Device Manager" properties. You'll probably want to move the default Windows and Dos temporary folders to a folder on the USB drive. Again, you'll want to assign a permanent drive letter to your USB drive You'll also have to decide if you want you Virtual memory enabled or not. It saves room on the harddrive image if you disable it. Drive C: will be running in "Dos Compatibility Mode". But it won't really matter. If you get a warning about your boot sector potentially being infected/corrupted, it is because you booted the image by it's partition and not as the drive. Nothing is wrong. Grub4Dos creates fake boot data to initiate the boot.1 point

Latest in space @latestinspace Jan 15 NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flying over mountains on Pluto - A must see, incredible! and Pluto Mountains Photo: ________________________________________________________________________ JULY 17, 2017 Video: Flyover of Pluto's majestic mountains and icy plains by Bill Keeter, NASA In July 2015, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft sent home the first close-up pictures of Pluto and its moons – amazing imagery that inspired many to wonder what a flight over the distant worlds' icy terrain might be like. Wonder no more. Using actual New Horizons data and digital elevation models of Pluto and its largest moon Charon, mission scientists have created flyover movies that offer spectacular new perspectives of the many unusual features that were discovered and which have reshaped our views of the Pluto system – from a vantage point even closer than the spacecraft itself. This dramatic Pluto flyover begins over the highlands to the southwest of the great expanse of nitrogen ice plain informally named Sputnik Planitia. The viewer first passes over the western margin of Sputnik, where it borders the dark, cratered terrain of Cthulhu Macula, with the blocky mountain ranges located within the plains seen on the right. The tour moves north past the rugged and fractured highlands of Voyager Terra and then turns southward over Pioneer Terra—which exhibits deep and wide pits—before concluding over the bladed terrain of Tartarus Dorsa in the far east of the encounter hemisphere. The equally exciting flight over Charon begins high over the hemisphere New Horizons saw on its closest approach, then descends over the deep, wide canyon of Serenity Chasma. The view moves north, passing over Dorothy Gale crater and the dark polar hood of Mordor Macula. The flight then turns south, covering the northern terrain of Oz Terra before ending over the relatively flat equatorial plains of Vulcan Planum and the "moated mountains" of Clarke Montes. New Horizons Pluto flyover. Credit: NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI/Paul Schenk and John Blackwell, Lunar and Planetary Institute The topographic relief is exaggerated by a factor of two to three times in these movies to emphasize topography; the surface colors of Pluto and Charon also have been enhanced to bring out detail. Digital mapping and rendering were performed by Paul Schenk and John Blackwell of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. All feature names in the Pluto system are informal. Provided by NASA. Of course it depends on the specific stick controller AND on the specific BIOS. Most of the sticks have a setting (called in jargon "removable" bit) that can be "flipped" by the Manufacturer Tool. Whether a Manufacturer Tool is available or not (and if even minimal instructions/docs for its use exist) vary greatly on the specific make/model of the controller inside the stick. Sandisk (that you mentioned in your other post) is a known exception for two reasons, their tools never leaked (AFAIK) and their controllers are not programmable via the USB connector (as well AFAIK they have on the PCB some contacts that can - presumably - be used with a TTL or similar serial adapter). But - generally speaking - this "removable bit" does not in itself affect in any way the BIOS (and more generally "real mode") part of the booting, issues can happen later in the booting phase and/or in the way the OS behaves after booting. If the manufacturer tool is available and you have the guts for it (a mistake in using it may well make the device not working anymore) setting the stick as "fixed" is a good idea, but there are filter drivers for Windows that can make the "flipping" at OS level, historically a driver called cfadisk.sys was made (originally for CF cards) then a couple similar ones came out dummydisk.sys and its "reversed version" rdummy.sys (making a fixed device removable), the most recent one is diskmod.sys that offers some other features: http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=9461 http://reboot.pro/topic/22249-diskmod/ Windows before 10 treated "removable" (USB) devices different from "fixed", i.e. the stick was either unpartitioned or - if partitioned - only one (first) partition would have been mounted/assigned a drive letter, so the filter driver was needed whenever multiple partitions were needed or wanted, one of the very few good things that Windows 10 did was to allow multiple partitions on removable media, so that nowadays cases where the filter driver is needed are rare. Anyway all the above has historically been irrelevant when it comes to "booting" (defined for the scope of this post as the initial part of booting, up to the choices in the boot manager configuration files). Problems in this early part usually derive from (not necessarily in order of relevance): 1) "wrong" HS geometry of the partitioning/formatting (almost anything partitioned under windows will be 255/63, which may or may not suitable) 2) errors in the MBR or PBR code or data 3) strange settings or quirks in the motherboard BIOS, including (but not limited to) "allergy" to specific MBR code, limits on geometry depending on size of the device, device size limits, and more, like needing two partitions on the stick The above is about BIOS/MBR, I hate to say this but (with some exceptions) UEFI booting often has less issues as it does not usually suffer from #1 and #2 above. You will need to describe the issues you are having and the specific sticks and motherboards involved (and of course the boot manager/OS you are trying to boot). jaclaz1 point

Well, we can speculate a bit. Avast 4.8 was the latest compatible version for Windows98SE and was released in 2008. The definition updates went on 'till 2017, so this gives us 9 years of definition updates. Avast 18.8 was the latest compatible version for Windows XP and was released in 2018. Should it follow the same pattern as 98SE, we should get definition updates 'till 2027 at least. Yeah it's been tough for a number of reasons one of which was COVID. I was one of the people you heard about on TV that was hospitalized after taking the first dose of Oxford Astra Zeneca. The 2nd dose went fine (still Oxford Astra Zeneca) after taking stuff to avoid blood clots and the 3rd one (Pfizer Booster) also was fine. Then in December 2021 I caught COVID, had a miserable time despite being triple jabbed, spent Christmas and New Year alone etc. I don't wanna talk too much about all this, but yeah, pretty tough time...1 point

If I have activated in Windows in font smoothing, all websites are flawless at Chrome. I don't have to change anything at the font. I would like to leave it that way if I just didn't get a headache. If Chrome does the font smoothing itself, could not be set in Chrome that the font smoothing from Windows is "standard"? Chrome has to query this setting in Windows. This would be a perfect solution.1 point

I have to say that I can do nothing as I am not you. You have to decide yourself what to do. One thing I gotta say that dumbest possible thing to do is trying make yourself believe you only need "teh latest and (not always) greatest" and not look back to what works for you. Everyone seems to be falling for that and suffer from half assed systems. Also I do not know should I laugh or cry to those who want get rid of win10 since telemetry and go to spyware distro called ubuntu, install microsoft teams and all other spyware programs to it. You only changed your master that way. I give you two example for more realistic soluctions: Example 1 I personally banned Windoze 8+ on my personal network and any newer machine I service are only on my lab network which is behind different ip and network hardware. I installed Linux for dualboot on my notebook and on my desktop pc so can use it to do things Windows 7 can't do. I am running wide variety of operating systems on my network starting from Windows 3.11 for workgroups up to to Windows 7 and Linux and wont fall for "you can only use one os" meme. Example 2 One of my friend who is network admin. He partially lifted Windows 10 ban as he needed it to play some newer titles. He is running Windows 10 on his main workstation and got second workstation running Windows 7 that he uses for any serious use since win10 keep hosing up according to him. He is also running older Windows versions and linux like me. What distro I recommend now? Well something that got all you need by default and at the point writing this Salix OS is that. It is very minimal and got that one program per purpose philosophy. Full install takes less than 3gb of hdd space and it got celluloid for video/dvd player, quod libet for audio player, firefox for browser etc. And if you need more programs there is graphical installer that will automatically do it for you without need for pulling hair or smashing keyboard. Even though it is one of few gem in linux distros I need to give it honest critic. They could have had included more privacy respecting browser than Firefox like GNU/Librewolf or Ungoogled Chromium, but maybe I am just nitpick there1 point
