@AstroSkipper ReBaseImage updates the timestamp inside PE header, which also effects calculated checksum, also written in the header, so only these two fields will differ if everything else is identical. So, TimeDateStamp field of IMAGE_FILE_HEADER and CheckSum field of IMAGE_OPTIONAL_HEADER (https://0xrick.github.io/win-internals/pe4/). Hm, LiBase's default config assumes DLL that is not bigger than 1 MB (relevant for putting multiple DLLs through the process). Edit: Actually, the function takes that timestamp as the parameter. LiBase just uses the result of standard time() function with NULL as the parameter, so current time. But if you pass 0 to ReBaseImage, it will increment the currently stored timestamp in the executable by one second.5 points

With helpful people like @UCyborg, it's surely a 100% chance for that to happen! Happy holidays to you and have a nice traveling BTW.4 points

Thanks, I'm an old cat (MEOW!) who knows some tricks...took me a while to remember though. Hello @mixit! You are absolutely right! I also tried to rebase the chrome.dll of 360Chrome 13.5.1030 rebuild 6 and failed. Only after removing the file signature with your recommended tool delcert, I was able to rebase this chrome.dll, too. Thanks for your tip! Yes, most work is done by ReBaseImage function, which checks for digital signature and bails out if it exists. It's logical when you think about it, when you digitally sign the executable, you seal it for release and don't change it anymore afterwards. It's possible to write own function for rebasing if you like to crunch through the executable manually. I think it was the chrome.dll from the version 360Chrome v13.5 build 2022 rebuild 3. @NotHereToPlayGames's rebuild 3, regular build, here's the ungoogled one. I'm sure @NotHereToPlayGames will include the rebased version in next rebuild. I would assume it should be. Hold on, have to get back home from work, lunch and so on, I'll check it later.4 points

This rebasing is VERY exciting news! Can't thank the "team" enough! I can't test until back home, but I'm starting to think that the rebase is why my multi-monitor setup at home crashes first launch and first launch only if I remove the Vulkan .dll's. Would also prove interesting to compare rebased 1030 with rebased 2022.4 points

This browser is starting to go from a need to use to want to use. I think, folks, we in this next release - with the help of @UCyborg, and, @mixit - we'll see a FANTASTIC build/release and one that we should promote. If @NHTPG can fix that minor blip in the address bad when the text vanishes away and you need to re type at first launch, people will be fighting to get their hands on this new awesome piece of software! A privacy focused friendly light weight browser. Even better than ungoogled chrome; period! :3 points

Sure. If it reduces memory consumption and does not affect the browser general use I will update all browsers with it.2 points

I already did that. Version 1030 runs more smoothly on my old system than version 2022. Both versions are consuming very little RAM.2 points

I think it was the chrome.dll from the version 360Chrome v13.5 build 2022 rebuild 3. I also downloaded @UCyborg's rebased chrome.dll to compare it to mine. The sizes (of original and rebased chrome.dll) match in any case, and it works.2 points

For me, Dencorso was the soul of this place from when I first started visting here til he slowly waned from the forum. He was the first one to reply to my first post/thread here, and to my great surprise pinned it moments later! I remember back during the 2017 crisis situation of the forum possibly disappearing, he'd PM people in charge of projects and pinned threads to make backups of everything important and be ready to regroup elsewhere to keep this community alive. I wish I'd talked to him more, but that's entirely on me... I'm not going to repeat all the good things that have already been said above about this exceptional person, but I would like to paraphrase Den's next-to-last status update (which I think in itself can be considered the manifesto of current MSFN). Indeed EoL != EoS (in this case End of Spirit) and the spirit of Dencorso can be kept alive here for as long as we all care to. May he rest in peace.2 points

Try this: https://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/audio/articles/95590/ Anyway the software home page is: https://www.nch.com.au/scribe/ but, it is ANOTHER kind of software from what the OP asked for: Express Scribe Transcription Software Foot Pedal Controlled Digital Transcription Audio Player LegacyFan, if you were a greengrocer and someone asks you a lemon, you can't usually give them two cucumbers instead . jaclaz2 points

@UCyborg Could that method result in a person not being able to execute the browser by any chance? If it is safe, I will also include it with my stuff as well. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.1 point

Hello @UCyborg! I compared your chrome.dll to my rebased one. The sizes are the same but the hashes are different. I thought libase uses the hash from the original dll file for rebasing. So why are the hashes different? Is it also dependent on the system? Or did you perform the rebasing manually with specific addresses?1 point

For my own compare/contrast learning curve, what was the original .dll that you rebased?1 point

And again, you are absolutely right! In some special cases, it's better to use old programs on old systems what you may call "period correct". They were developed for these anchient OSs, and one can avoid problems that much more modern programs can cause. I have often experienced this on my old computer.1 point

1. We'll its their prerogative to do so if they so chose as its a feature on the forum, ha, its only when you're signed in though, when lurking the blocked person (as their postings) are still in full view. 3. No I wasn't joking, and I actually don't think its bad because its their choice and the feature is there on the software. 3. YES! I don't mind being blocked because not everyone know just how bad they need mister blobfish in their lives.1 point

Well, again, this is very unfortunate, indeed. I still think he is a good person, and I wonder what if I force myself to agree with his definition, will he be back then ? Will he forgive me ? And then again, it's so hard to imagine a mobo from 2000 to be the "right XP era hardware" . I mean , XP released to sales only at the end of 2001. So no XP existed ! What do you think I should do ? thanks. P.S. Hope you will get out of your depression as soon as possible !1 point

True. This is why a lot of software is still Vista or later in 2022: Ice Cream Reader, FireAlpaca, SumatraPDF, Panda security, and a lot of lesser-known software. Under the hood, it's extremely similar to 7. I'm sure many developers don't really have a good reason to go onto newer IDE's if all they are is more bloat.1 point

Been meaning to post these @feodor updates from the Russian-language forum, because sooner or later someone's going to ask again. December 4: December 14: I presume he means that heavy parallel disk activity during builds is causing disk corruption when power is suddenly cut, so building on a RAM disk would help with that.1 point

Seems chrome.dll needs to be rebased. It uses the default preferred base address used by MS build tools (which is constant) and is unable to be loaded at its preferred base address on my XP and the DLL itself is huge, so it seems logical if the OS has to duplicate huge chunk of it in every chrome.exe process to be able to fix-up addresses inside, that would be costly in terms of memory. I did rebasing when I patched old games (at least those I've spent most time working on) that used DLLs, which were small and these games don't spawn multiple processes. Back then I found the tool that chose the address based on the name of the DLL with optional INI file to specify base address and separation (how much apart they should be in the address space). I think the idea is to line up DLLs of your application at higher addresses, preventing conflicts with each other or another system softwares' / utilities' DLLs so OS doesn't have to rebase them at load time. Having them loaded in upper portion of the address space should leave large contiguous space for memory allocations. Some interesting reading here and here. There's the hint why you don't see the issue on Vista+. Anyway, here's the tool (libase.zip), it's in the Release subfolder, have both chrome.dll (from Chrome\Application\13.5.2022.0 folder) and libase.exe in the same folder, open CMD, cd to that folder and run: libase chrome.dll Copy chrome.dll back, launch the browser and check the memory consumption. No idea where the tool was originally published and who wrote it, I think it came only in source code form and I wrapped it inside Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (another dinosaur) workspace file and compiled it. Microsoft has their own tool in their compiler suite that can also rebase executables and DLLs (reference). So it's an issue that is easily fixable, but not many people seem to pay attention to such details. Rebasing other browser's DLLs should also save a little bit of memory. Well, I do assume things at times.1 point

Did you guys just make a bunch of assumptions about me using proxy? I use Proxomitron, mostly for modding the web application I use at work. Would have to ditch Pale Moon there completely if it wasn't for Proxomitron replacing one bad JS file developers introduced for their own convenience / consistency with other code, nothing but syntactic sugar for having definitions for some objects on the client-side (JavaScript) close to the definitions on the server-side (C#). That thing still has few glitches, like one dialog opens with 1,5-2s delay if certain option is set in it and another draggable dialog made with jQuery, since certain version, has a funny glitch, the dialog has few drop-down menus, one with a lot of entries has the scrollbar and if I try to drag the scrollbar, thw whole dialog is dragged instead... I also have to unset a bunch of redundant CSS properties on the menu bar, because at least one of them is causing another bizarre glitch, when something changes on the page, it causes menu bar's height to change. It's funny to watch when you open the hardware page where you can open the status of any working connected controller, which refreshes once per second and then every second menu bar's height increases, so it would eventually expand down over the entire screen. And other pages may open with the wrong bar height. Of course, nobody notices because system requirement is "latest and greatest" Firefox / Chrome. Edit: Maybe, there are other members here who can confirm or refute my theory. I would be very interested! I've got AMD with only 4 real cores, no difference in RAM consumption between running Chrome on all cores or just a single one, except responsiveness takes a noticeable hit running on one core (affinity setting). Edit2: Right, reading again, I don't qualify for the test.1 point

Very depressing news.. I had feared for the worst for some time now, given that he had not been active here, and had not responded to messages I sent previously. Den was one of the few people "online" who I considered a true friend, and I will sorely miss his presence here. While I had not spoken much with him over the past couple of years (where does the time go? ), he was always helpful and always ready to give clear insight on whatever issue we discussed. He was very wise, and not only on the subject of computers. While not the subject of this forum, he understood historical and political nuances that befuddle most. I believe my first interaction with him revolved around problems with a flash drive.. and IIRC by the time it was over the discussion included rloew and jaclaz as well. Now of these greats only jaclaz remains with us. I never expected to become one of the "old ones" - yet here I am. My pitiful knowledge can never live up to the bar set by Den and others, and I will never be the "diplomat" that he could be when dealing with differing viewpoints and difficult members. I know that this forum and the collection of knowledge that it represents mattered to him, so let us all work to continue and preserve it in memory of him. Rest in peace my friend. You will not be forgotten.1 point

I forgot to mention that I believe this BAT file can be used with any Chromium-based browser (As I think user data folders on them are similar). You would have to edit it so the executable and the user data folder of the browser match the ones of the browser you are using.1 point
