  5. For me it originally started from frustration and hate towards Windows 8. Back in 2014 I was still running Windows XP and all sudden everyone were like "OMG xp is out of support, it will be flooded with viruses, it is totally unusable to anything, upgrade to windoze 8." and I hated it. There was plenty of Microsoft propaganda going on to increase sales of Windoze 8 for those who wanted OS that actually worked properly out of box and was designed for non bacon grease covered monitors. I decided to keep using Windows XP until life decided that I wont and was forced use that piece of s#it called office 365 on my personal system. So I decided take last sensible OS called Windows 7. Few years passed and I was sticking with Windows 7 and eventually was rooting for it. It was very decent operating system and had ACTUAL IMPROVEMENTS in my usage. During that time my XP pc fell out of use since I had no time for fun like before. Then Windoze 10 came out that was free update and MS forced it into my pc against my will (since that hidden option to force update to Windoze 10) and at that point it was personal for me. It messed up my computer totally and I had redo everything. If you need to force OS for some doesn't that mean there is something horribly wrong by design? Also everyone were so love with their Windoze 10 systems and praised Microsoft and were insisting everyone to use it and being hostitle to those who did not want it. I eventually ended up giving it a shot saying that I will never go back to older Windows versions. As vanilla it was horrible to use so I ended up installing classic shell and some other mods and it was more ok but still felt buggy and also someone in Microsoft decided that consumers were still not harmed enough when they added new useless task bars , then they decided to disallow disabling "anti consumer inexperience" aka bloatware downloader on home and pro edition of Windows. That combined with inability to pick what updates to download like on Windows 7 and older plus settings resetting after updates I decided I had enough and rolled back to Windows 7. When I mentioned what though from Windows 10 and what could be improved everyone were so insulted like I would have kicked a dog. It is just a software and not everyone want to use what you like. But everyone were thinking Microsoft was their friend and cared from them actually and that is why any critic was not ok. That point around 2015-2016 I decided to permanently ban Windows 10 on my personal network and stick with Windows 7 and newcomer Windows XP that was back in game I also got rid of most of internet services at that point and wont regret it. Then micracle happened and I was no longer required run any of those software on my personal system. It felt so good to install what I wanted and not install anything forcefully. Then Windows 7 eol date came and felt like I was last man standing behind using older OS. Everyone were thinking older Windows was only good for retrogaming and if you plugged into any network it would get flooded with viruses and hackers would turn into botnet even I knew that was bulls#it. Then I found site called MSFN.org while was looking some XP compatible browser and well here I am. I know this is long answer but you asked why and here is why. At this point in time I am fine for anyone use whatever they want BUT DO NOT TELL ME WHAT OS TO USE. I do not care if you got Windoze 10 or 11 and got picture of Microsoft CEO on it and you worship it, but do not push it down everyone throat. Some are too simple minded to see choice of os or choice of anything in this world. All is forced in this world liked or not and most are fine with it since "someone else knows you benefit better than you" And if someone think I am stupid, diehard or anything else because I said this then it must be that way. I do not have to please anyone.

  6. I have been focusing greatly on restructuring my life's foundation day by day; in which case this can Indeed apply to a variety of areas. A feeling of continual determination is present; also that of a deep exhaustion from worklife and humanity in general. Ultimately, this being is surviving and striving forward.

  7. Windows 10 is pretty much the end of the line for me as far as m$ goes. Windows 11 will be a firm hell no on my LAN. Luckily, I don't have ginormous screens, exotic interfaces or proprietary A/V capture devices that really run best on Windows, so I can abandon modern Windows for a mixture of legacy commercial OSes and FOSS OSes and software. I'm posting here on a modded 360Chrome browser in Vista 32bit running on a Pentium 4; I have my Twitter feed up on my Mac Mini running Leopard in a modified Firefox build which accessses Twitter through a web rendering proxy service running on an Ubuntu Server VM on another machine. If I push another power switch and flip to another channel on my KVM switch, I can bring up my Mageia Linux gaming machine that runs about 70% of my Steam games collection without having to futz with Proton or Wine (and the other 30% of my Steam games and my entire Gog games collection could run on a Windows 7 box of Core 2 Quad vintage easily). For the past several years, nearly all of my work flow has been done with open-source software, even on my Windows boxes. If m$ wants to move further down the road of spying on users and controlling how they use their computers, that's fine with me. I already had one foot out the door anyway.

  8. As an aside, I found out I know one of the programmers at CD Projekt RED who worked on Cyberpunk 2077. Not very high up on the totem pole, mind you, but when he found out that my daily driver is an XP64 machine it not only encouraged him to consider running an XP machine of his own for grins, but he also encouraged me to try and get Cyberpunk running on my XP64 machine given the TITAN X Maxwell can actually run the game decently (but not great). Said it would make me internet famous, haha. That being said, I think you and @Mr.Scienceman2000 have the right of it here. In some respects it's possible to get away with using an older OS to run current software, and for that we have to thank the people who put in the work to keep the older OSes relevant. @roytam1 and the gamut of browser forks he manages, the various extended kernel projects, etc. So, @Tonny52: look into the projects for your desired OS and see who's done what. Manage your expectations, but as Scienceman said, "don't give up using what you like just because someone told you to do so." EDIT: Oh, and because I hadn't caught up on all the posts and saw this afterward: From the perspective of what @UCyborg said, there's people who continue to use the older OSes (like myself) because there's enough people who do have the agency (the technical know-how, time to invest, etc.) to assert some control over and resist the planned obsolescence of older systems. I can't speak for others as to why they personally use older OSes, but I can say that for me it was a gamut of reasons. XP64 uses the least amount of memory of all the Windows 64-bit operating systems of which I'm aware, which was a big deal for me in 2007 when I made the decision to go with that over Vista. I still really like having as much control over the RAM in my system as possible, even now with my system sporting 128 GB of it. Also, I dislike Windows 10's telemetry. I of course took all the measures I could to minimize it on the hand-me-down Windows 10 system I have, but even then if I can do something on XP64 I'd much rather do it there. Windows 11's TPM requirements are also a turnoff for me. I can't be the only one who remembers the "Trusted Computing" Palladium FAQ from the early 2000's ...

  10. Didn't see this posted anywhere but a story from ghacks claims there are planned changes next year to Pale Moon. Looks like they're going back to allowing firefox addons, that's the good move. The bad news is it could be the end of basilisk. Guess it hasn't been decided yet: https://www.ghacks.net/2021/12/17/pale-moon-project-announces-change-of-direction/ One feature with Pale Moon is the home page lacks the drop down search engines. I'd miss that since I use it constantly in the newer and older firefox versions. Maybe there's an addon that could substitute for it. Also, it doesn't appear that Classic Theme Restorer works in Pale Moon versions, even when using JustOff's tester-tool.

  12. Note regarding versions: The regular version will have a file name ending in _rebuild_#. Versions with a file name ending in _ungoogled disables embedded Google APIs in much the same way that "ungoogled-chromium" ( https://chromium.woolyss.com/ ) disables embedded Google APIs. The "ungoogled" version is recommended for those that prefer tighter control over a Google-based browser basically giving special treatment to Google cookies and violating user preference settings. A side effect to this approach (which also exists in "ungoogled-chromium") is that the Chrome Web Store is intentionally broken only in as far as the "Add to Chrome" button is concerned. This is great for those that prefer to manually install extensions as opposed to obtaining from the Chrome Web Store. A workaround to restore the "Add to" button (special thanks to @VistaLover for this solution) can be obtained from here -- https://github.com/NeverDecaf/chromium-web-store Mileage may vary, for me this only added the "Add to" button but clicking it only downloaded the extensions .crx (which I personally prefer anyway) as opposed to 'adding to' 360Chrome. I had similar results with official "ungoogled-chromium" on the official Chrome Web Store (restores "Add to" button but does not actually 'add to'). Special thanks to @Humming Owl for translated .png files. Special thanks to @Dixel for discussions leading towards the "ungoogled" versions. 15. Reading now ... thank you very much for that share. Yeah, people have been quiet lately ... maybe busy shopping. My dearly departed father always reminded me that every day above ground is a good day and its not over until they throw the dirt on us. Tomorrow never comes, because when we get there, its today, so better make it count. Too bad others in the world aren't in agreement that there is strength in numbers. Hopefully its not too late. I'll admit sometimes I question this; myself. Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy, and safe holiday.

  17. How I survived a year of SHTF in 90s Bosnia No electricity, no food, no running water, no law. In a now legendary forum thread, a user named Selco tells preppers about his experiences and what he and his family did to stay alive. November 6, 2014 In September of 2011, a user named selco joined the forums at SurvivalistBoards.com and posted “my shtf expirience-wartime,” a thread that would since become legendary in survivalist communities and beyond — in fact, you frequently see people reference it to this day in communities like 4chan and reddit. In it, Selco details his experience of living in a besieged Bosnian town of 50 to 60k people during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). The siege took away everything modern humans take for granted and tested with extreme brutality Selco’s and his community’s ability to survive. But what is so interesting about this war story is that it was told to a group of survivalists (preppers) who had questions — lots of questions. How does barter work and which survival strategies are worthless bunk? How were the social dynamics when everyone realized there was no law? What really happens and what kind of tricks do people actually get up to to get by when faced with, essentially, the apocalypse? Selco’s first post: OK, i wanna share with you my own experience. (be patient with my English, i am from far away ) I am from Bosnia, and as some of you may know it was hell here from 92-95, anyway, for 1 whole year i lived and survived in a city of 50 000- 60 000 residents WITHOUT: electricity, fuel, running water, real food distribution, or distribution of any goods, or any kind of organized law or government. The city was surrounded for 1 year and in that city actually it was SHTF situation. We did not have organized army or police force, there was groups of defenders, actually anybody who had a gun, fight for his own house and his own family. Some of us was better prepared, but most of families had food for couple of days, some of us had pistol, few owned AK-47 when all started. Anyway, after one month or two, gangs started with their nasty job, hospital looked like butchery, police force vanished, 80 percent of hospital staff gone home. I was lucky, my family was big in that time (15 members in one big house, 5-6 pistols, 3 Kalashnikov s) so we lived and survived, most of us. I remember US Air force dropped MRE every 10 days (god bless USA for that) as help for surrounded city, it just was not enough. Some of houses had little gardens with some vegetables, most did not. After three months rumors started abouth first deaths from starvation, deaths from low temperatures, we stripped every door , window frame from abandoned houses for heating, i burned all my own furniture for heating, lot of people died from diseases, mostly from bad water (two of my family members), we used rain water for drink, several times i ate pigeons, once i ate rat. Money did not worth sh.. we traded things, black market worked, few examples: for 1 corned beef can you could have woman for couple of hours(sounds bad, but it was reality) i remember, most of that womans were just desperate mothers, candles, lighters, antibiotics, fuel, batteries, rifle ammo and of course food, we fight like animals for that. In situation like that lot of things change, most of people turned to monsters, it was ugly. Strength was in the numbers, if you were alone in the house, you ve been probably robbed and killed, no matter how well armed. Anyway, war ended, again thanks to America (and again god bless USA for that) It is not important witch side had right in that war. It was almost 20 years ago, but believe me, for me it was just like yesterday, i remember everything, and i think i learned a lot. Me and my family are prepared now,i am well armed, stocked and educated. It is not important what going to happen, earthquake, war, tsunami, aliens terrorists, important thing is that something gonna be. And from my expirience, you can not survive alone, strength is in the numbers, be close with your family, prepare with them, choose your friends wisely and prepare with them too. And at the end, this is my first post, and my English is not so good, so don t judge me too hard. ” ... - read the whole article here: https://lulz.com/surviving-a-year-of-shtf-in-90s-bosnia-war-selco-forum-thread-6265/ - Found it here: https://nitter.net/LauraFo63430334/status/1471419798437441544#m "This could be the most important read of your lifetime."

  19. @DanR20 Admittedly, I've never touched CTR's CSS stuff, but I know for certain Stylem can be used to write CSS styles for browser interface, not just websites. They're applied when you either save it or use button for live preview.

  20. I don't have any use for "nitter" but as far as testing, I have to disable NoScript and uMatrix, load the page, then re-enable and all works fine - even without setting any special non-default NoScript/uMatrix site-specific "nitter". Seems to me to be very much related to extensions. Chrome and Mozilla both have a flaw, from my experience, that a disabled extension does NOT BEHAVE THE SAME as the same extension enabled but with site-specific rules set to "trust/bypass". Chrome and Mozilla both also have the flaw, from my experience, that an INCOGNITO WINDOW does NOT BEHAVE THE SAME when an extension is disabled versus enabled! Too difficult to log specific cases, but I'd swear that I've seen this behavior over the years in both Chrome and Mozilla browsers - INCOGNITO mode will react DIFFERENTLY when an extension is ENABLED versus DISABLED. Even though INCOGNITO mode "should" behave as if all extensions are DISABLED (unless, of course, you opt-in for allow in Incognito). Do not assume that Incognito mode is the same thing as disabling all extensions!

  26. Welcome back Life is full of change, isn't it. When you change the way you look at things - the things you look at will change. Sometimes good, sometimes, not so good; but either way, we can not go backwards. Well we can with our computers. I'm not religious (organized religion) but, rather consider myself to be - spiritual. ...the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference... I think that resonates with everyone regardless and that is not easy sometimes.

  27. @Win10-Hater The forum is not a blog so your post was merged here. The only other place you can post something like this is in your intro thread (if you have one) or as a status update on your profile.

  28. I have to say that I can do nothing as I am not you. You have to decide yourself what to do. One thing I gotta say that dumbest possible thing to do is trying make yourself believe you only need "teh latest and (not always) greatest" and not look back to what works for you. Everyone seems to be falling for that and suffer from half assed systems. Also I do not know should I laugh or cry to those who want get rid of win10 since telemetry and go to spyware distro called ubuntu, install microsoft teams and all other spyware programs to it. You only changed your master that way. I give you two example for more realistic soluctions: Example 1 I personally banned Windoze 8+ on my personal network and any newer machine I service are only on my lab network which is behind different ip and network hardware. I installed Linux for dualboot on my notebook and on my desktop pc so can use it to do things Windows 7 can't do. I am running wide variety of operating systems on my network starting from Windows 3.11 for workgroups up to to Windows 7 and Linux and wont fall for "you can only use one os" meme. Example 2 One of my friend who is network admin. He partially lifted Windows 10 ban as he needed it to play some newer titles. He is running Windows 10 on his main workstation and got second workstation running Windows 7 that he uses for any serious use since win10 keep hosing up according to him. He is also running older Windows versions and linux like me. What distro I recommend now? Well something that got all you need by default and at the point writing this Salix OS is that. It is very minimal and got that one program per purpose philosophy. Full install takes less than 3gb of hdd space and it got celluloid for video/dvd player, quod libet for audio player, firefox for browser etc. And if you need more programs there is graphical installer that will automatically do it for you without need for pulling hair or smashing keyboard. Even though it is one of few gem in linux distros I need to give it honest critic. They could have had included more privacy respecting browser than Firefox like GNU/Librewolf or Ungoogled Chromium, but maybe I am just nitpick there

  29. Sure, true... but too complicated for my wife probably... if I die (this can happen, you never know!...) - then my wife could not use my computer because things are too complicated. So I don't use uMatrix.

  30. With the large amount of interest in custom web browsers recently, we have created a new sub-forum specifically for topics about web browsers and the customisation and development of them. https://msfn.org/board/forum/200-web-browsers/

  31. Please be cautious. I used to think the same but the more deeper you dig you will see that Iron (and Slimjet) has THREE TIMES (two times for Slimjet) the telemetry that Chrome has! You may be interested in reading this -- https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/iron.html

  32. Added new download link to first post. Alpha release for version 13.5.1030. This release defaults to the original Chinese Author's language pack for English - it is still very "broken" as far as English goes – there will be English errors and there will still be some Chinese. The skin defaults to "XP Luna Blue" (I still plan on creating a "dark theme" one of these days). The Developer Tools has also been set to English. None of the telemetry features have been coded out yet (but the files that most of them rely on have been removed).

  33. I recently ditched Firefox because it quit running without additional runtimes that I'm not going to install on my system and it is heavy and buggy , I am now a 360 user . The best browser so far. It just runs ! It doesn't want a couple of gigs of redist packages (bloatware). I absolutely don't care if all firefox browsers , including this one , will cease to exist . They had their chance . Now start to downvote me.
