  1. Changes in the latest Vista Extended Kernel release: A new function has been added to user32 in x64. This should help with newer Adobe applications. Two new functions have been added to ntdll. This will allow Windows 7 WordPad to run. That function was contributed by Ximonite. Most of the K32* series of functions have been implemented to kernel32 x86. The SetDefaultDllDirectories bug is now fixed for x86 applications. Run x86 VLC and you will see the difference. GetLogicalProcessorInformationEx is also implemented on x86, without issue. Version spoofing is now implemented. Make a file in your Windows directory named osver.ini. If you have Firefox/Thunderbird 91 or above installed, or Waterfox G4 installed, copy the path of the executable to the file and place it in brackets. Write "Enabled=1" below. Then write "FirefoxFix=1" below. Then run Firefox/Thunderbird/Waterfox. Font rendering also differs slightly with this option set on older versions of those browsers.

  2. Nope, not possible. All they do is rename something like "resources.pak.ungoogled" or "resources.pak.regular" to "resources.pak" or something like "jisu9.dark-theme.srx" or "jisu9.xp-theme.srx" to "jisu9.srx". Chromium browsers cannot execute any .exe without a confirmation dialog and user-interaction with that confirmation dialog. On top of that, the OS throws a file-sharing error if you try to change the name of any of these files while 360Chrome is running.

  3. Must be x86 Chrome. I implemented this function a long time ago on x64 and there is a Chromium 97 build somewhere working on Vista.

  4. Hmm, interesting. Is that just based on the points in the article? I used Bing anyways because a) Microsoft pays you to and b) I like it and prefer it to Google. I actually find myself reeling if I'm accidentally on Google and head back over to Bing. But, I do use Bing directly, not the built in default search provider. I don't use the Iron start pages either, I just have it open the new tab page. Since those are the 2 main points on there, does it really still stand? Granted, I haven't measured in Wireshark, but my problem with Iron at this point is that it too blindly follows upstream Chromium, so in Iron >= 71, the old UI flag is also gone. So I think I'm going to be quitting Iron for good sooner or later, even if I don't necessarily want to.

  5. Your words are wonderful, right and realistic. I promise you that there will be a new extended nucleus in the middle of next year, in which there will be great progress at the level of running modern programs. There is a person who is giving everything he has to issue this extension. I pray to God to grant him success in his work.

  8. Here are some more details for usage of osver.ini. You can set settings per-application as above (set Enabled=1 as well), or set them for the entire system by making an entry appended with "[global]". To accommodate every version checking method used by an application, several options are available. Unfortunately I also found that breakage became a significant possibility very quickly, so keep that in mind when using the version spoofers. You can set these values to 1: Win7SuperVerFix Win8SuperVerFix Win10SuperVerFix FirefoxFix (a lighter version of Win7SuperVerFix) You can also set these values: MajorVersion MinorVersion BuildNumber CSDVersion (the service pack string) PlatformId (caution, as the standard value of 2 is used to indicate that the OS is Windows NT. 1 represents 9x and 0 represents Win32s) For example, Firefox installers would need MinorVersion=1. You may have to briefly set it under [global] for installers that copy executables to a temp folder and do the version checks there.

  9. They are the same as the previous version. This should now be fixed in the latest installer. Although it is recommended that users who have already run the installer rename kernel32.dll.bak to kernelol.dll in syswow64.

  11. Bingo! It really is that simple! I hear way too many folks "complain" that blocking javascript doesn't work for them because it kills too many websites and is too much of a "nuisance" to block. If a website refuses to function to at least a tiny shred of usability with NoScript, uMatrix, Stylus, and Tampermonkey all doing their thing, then the default course of action is not to disable them, the default course of action is to find a different website offering the same exact content but without all of the d@mn shenanigans.

  12. Please be cautious. I used to think the same but the more deeper you dig you will see that Iron (and Slimjet) has THREE TIMES (two times for Slimjet) the telemetry that Chrome has! You may be interested in reading this -- https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/iron.html

  13. after trying to install the new version I got this in cmd https://ibb.co/6wjWGj8 the system boots without any error but msi afterburner will crash (even the latest version), steam isn't working* (latest ver) "Steam is no longer supported on your operating system version" and kaspersky 18.0.0.405 crashed 1 time but then after reopened it worked (needs more testing tho) I tried the osver.ini trick but still nothing (I haven't tried it on the latest version of firefox tho but that's because I don't like the new UI) What are the exact updates needed to run this? (Besides apr 2017 and the others that were needed for the last version) *steam from 6 nov 2020 still works but csgo still fails calling the loader
    1 point
  14. Actually, there is no "SteamFix" defined. But for Steam you could attempt "SuperWin7VerFix=1". There is also a SuperWin8VerFix and a SuperWin10VerFix.

  15. I did not suggest moving back. Just sticking a permanent shortcut to it. IMHO, the best would be to have this forum cloned/linked to in all revelant OS forums, so it appears as a subforum to them without actually moving it. Would this be possible with the current forum software?

  16. The last few weeks have definitely been interesting. I've been using Iron version 70 since October 2018, since after 70 Chromium took out the flag to disable the horrible new UI (Iron is just Chrome with the privacy stuff taken out, otherwise basically identical). Surprisingly, it's had a pretty good run. I've seen "Your browser is not supported" in a lot sites for years now, but it really hasn't been until the past couple weeks that suddenly things have been falling apart everywhere. PDF previews on some sites no longer work, some sites no longer render at all, some JavaScript crashes the page and I see tons of errors in the F12 console... it's like something's really changed that's caused sites to suddenly become incompatible with anything that's not a blazing new Chrome or Firefox in the past few weeks. To make matters worse, Internet Explorer is outright blocked by half of things, even beyond user agent sniffing, and some things don't even work in Pale Moon, so that means that there are some things that I have *ZERO* working browsers to handle. In the past year, I've gone from 3 choices to having none in many cases. Welcome to the age of "If our site doesn't work in something that's not the latest Chrome or Firefox, we don't give a crap". I can resonate with the dystopian Internet stuff the Archive project is talking about... this is what that looks like - removal of browser choice, first and forefront. It's like they all got together last week and said "gee, let's break the web for anyone using an old browser, on purpose". Seriously, what's wrong with web devs these days? I'm sure their commit was something like "Remove support for non-standard browsers", or something like that, they literally wiped it all out in one fell swoop. And of course, none of these vendors give a quack. And it's not on OS thing. It doesn't work on Windows 7, and I tried on Windows 10 and it doesn't work there either. It's about the browser, obviously, not OS. And maybe I wouldn't be making a big deal out of it if Chromium had kept that one flag in... want to make the vomit UI the default? Fine. But don't force it on everyone. I jumped off the ship at that point. I refuse to use anything newer than Chromium 70. I do so at work and I can hardly stand it. It literally makes the entire computer *feel* slower, even... Okay, so serious questions now. Ironically, it does seem that New Moon 28 is now the most "standards compliant" browser on my computer (Windows 7). I'm still debating whether or not to jump ship from Chromium entirely. Is there any fork or project that has managed to restore the old UI options? I found one thing out there that has it but it seems that some of these alternate programs are all sourced from China... not really sure how I feel about that. I've been using Iron 70 for more than 3 years now, it had a good run, but I can tell that it's days are limited now and sooner or later, I need to make New Moon my primary browser or find something else. Any ideas?

  17. The extended kernel does not require KB4493471 that you say caused a BSOD that once affected many Avast/AVG users, however it does require KB4474419.

  18. It won't go back to the XP forum. It was past time it got it's own forum. "Older NT-OSes" denote those which have sub-forums in the "Older NT-OSes" forum. 7 isn't there yet (it still has too many users and too many software support for that). Nor is 8.0, because it's discussed in the same forum as 8.1, which isn't yet EoS.

  19. ... The old location in the WinXP subforum, and pardon me XP-users for saying so , wasn't very appropriate either, because: 1. The majority (if not all) of the roytam1 browsers can be run on WinOSes past WinXP (e.g. Vista SP2/Win7 SP1/etc.); apart from yours truly (on Vista SP2 32-bit), I am aware of MSFN members running e.g. St52 under Win7, despite that OS offering, at least at this time, a varied selection of supported recent/mainstream browsers... 2. Several roytam1 browsers can be run on WinOSes preceding WinXP (natively or via KernelEx) ... Thus, "Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes" is fine by me... The key word here is "Older" which, as far as MS are concerned, should denote evey WinOS < 8.1 ... Being realistic though, I can acknowledge the vast majority of users falling into the WinXP group... That doesn't mean Vista users should be treated differently, does it? Browsers offer the bookmark function, so "latest XP news"? https://msfn.org/board/forum/34-windows-xp/ and, similarly, "latest Vista news"? https://msfn.org/board/forum/67-windows-vista/

  23. I would rate it 10/10 without extended kernel, and 6/10 with extended kernel. It's overall a great OS, easy to explore, and nostalgic. My rating for this OS with extended kernel would be 7/10 if it was capable to install Office 2010, as I like that version a lot, but Office 2007 still looks good. And also, 8/10 if XP programs can get installed without NNN4NT5 spoofing (except MSI installers), 9/10 if newer versions of web browsers can install and run (Chrome 50, Vivaldi 1.1, Opera 37, Firefox 53), and finally, 10/10 if some newer versions of programs can run without crashing (ex., Adobe Acrobat Reader DC can install, but crashes upon running it ]EDIT: It actually runs after installing VC runtimes from 2010 to 2019, but crashes upon opening a PDF.], Same goes for LibreOffice 6.0.0.1 also.) I don't mean to say that extended kernel makes Windows 2000 bad, but it's just that there are some catches. If there are workarounds for them, that would be helpful. But, however, what I liked about it is that, with extended kernel, you can run a bit of Windows Vista/7 Programs on it (Foxit Reader 9.6, Audacity 3.0.2), and that the fact WMP11 is installable on it. I never lost my hope for that OS.

  24. Agreed. So the "test" is NOT about whether or not your browser "itself" is vulnerable to fingerprinting. The "test" SHOULD BE "does this website engage in fingerprinting" and if the answer is YES, then boycott the $h!t out of that website. Otherwise, if you trust that website to the extent of becoming a member, registering, and logging in, then, um, you have OPTED IN to that website "knowing" who you are, fingerprint or not. The point really boils down to this, if your level of paranoia wants to live in a cardboard box under a bridge, by all means, it's not for me to tell you were to pitch your tent. But let's stop acting like dogs trying to bite a flea on the tip of its tail. If you don't trust the website you are visiting, then HELLO, why did you visit it? Really seems that simple to me. Moving on... I have my paradigm, others have theirs... MSFN threads don't alter people's perspectives...

  26. Github-wc-polyfill seems to work with Serpent 55, at least, although as mentioned in the "Multiprocess Mode" thread, only in single-process mode. (I have a single-process mode profile for just this sort of situation.) And again, you need to modify install.rdf to allow version 52.9 through 55.* to be installed. Edit: Spoke too soon. With GitHub, some things work but several are still broken with Serpent 55. GitLab doesn't really work at all. Same goes for FF 52.9.1 and FF 53.

  27. Why would Microsoft want to hire someone to keep on adding functionality to a 15 year old OS that they can no longer make money off of?

  28. My apology for the late response! ======================================= 1) I am using a custom reflection image + (obviously) a custom theme atlas + layout file. The files can be downloaded here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AixnyqPuOrWii6JqKbsVimXvxbP-TA?e=b15Zrp 2) Furthermore, to make the 'About Windows' (winver.exe) window entirely transparent, I am using 'BlackGlassEnhanced', which, is not unlike SetWindowCompositionAttribute with a convenient user interface on top. It includes a readme.txt file, and can be downloaded here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AixnyqPuOrWii6JoLgDJBTHD2YNr_w?e=x0YTUN 3) I recommend configuring the reflection image + theme atlas + layout file using AeroGlassGUI, which can be downloaded here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AixnyqPuOrWii6Jr6lnldeWW0Ssb7w?e=eHOt4s ======================================= I'll be around to answer any questions you may have, good day!

  29. I was being a little daring and tried to run Firefox 60 ESR. It installed after setting MSI compatibility to Windows 7, though it appears that there are several unresolved exports in kernel32.dll, as well as a few in shell32.dll. It also threw a "can't start XPCOM error". Warning to other users: if you try this, you will break other Firefox-engine based browsers like New Moon and Basilisk. Here is the dependency walker file. I wonder how feasible it is to get quantum to run on Windows 2000? https://mega.nz/#!VxE3DSCY!K3WDwKUJC9z5djBUdK-ohinpSEgKtlLLIMtq50IdSfU UPDATE: I tried to get it to hook a module with the first kernel32.dll function called (using the kernel32.dll from my Windows 10), copied over the ucrtbase.dll as well and all I can say is that it opened a new can of worms, This ain't my thing...
