The Extended Kernel project is still active, but the amount of time I have to work on it has dropped to new lows for various reasons. In fact, I was investigating the Firefox 89 font rendering breakage, and was planning on upgrading win32k to fix it (and upgrading win32k will help with gdi32 and DX components; plus, something in win32k bugchecks me when I close Waterfox G3 sometimes). But I am only near real Vista hardware for 2 out of every 14 days through late August. One side note: I have finally found something that surpasses Vista in performance on my HP Z600 workstation, while being from its lineage. 21996.1's averaged benchmarked results (in Cinebench R11.5) are slightly better than 2008 with 2019-04 updates and extended kernel, and perceived performance is identical or even better than Vista, which in turn is better than 7/1809. So some efforts may be redirected to that from Vista.4 points

I'd have hope if this was a Windows 10 problem but it's really not. It's everywhere, if you want to make all the money, ads, spyware, free as in cost, Whatever as a Service, etc is the business model, google, apple , facebook, gaming companies, everyone is doing it, and as long as this stays we'll never get a proper operating system again (other than ones not controlled by corporations like linux). Windows 11 will just have a lot more of everything we hate in 10. More ads, more "telemetry", even more restrictive like Mac, it's our PC now you use it the way we tell you to or we make your life hell. Also it's obvious that whatever they develop and name it, it will be just an easy cashgrab bc they know it works. Couldn't care less, it's micro$oft, i know what to expect. Windows is dead.2 points

Don't you do your own backups? I have completely shunned the cloud and yet - amazingly - I haven't lost any data since 1976 (though I admit that some of it is on punch cards and mag tape, which I never transferred into the PC environment). As far as files on my computer go, my oldest Word document in my Documents folder is from 1990 (which is when I started using Word). Never once have these documents been "on the cloud". You cannot espouse advantages of "cloud" computing - which differs from traditional computing with networking in one key point, you don't have control of the communications - because there simply are no advantages for users. The only advantages are for those who would seek to profit from handling your data. Surely you don't believe in a free lunch. The oldest program in my BIN folder is dated 1986, which is when I started accumulating useful applications. It no longer runs on my host system since it's a 16 bit application. However, to this day I still run the NT CLOCK32.EXE application, which is dated late 90s, on my desktop 24/7. Why? Because it accomplishes its purpose (showing me the time and date) with almost no resource consumption. The executable is a whole 42 kBytes in size. My point? There is no reason to believe that "newer is better" when it comes to software. People aren't any smarter than they were decades ago. If anything, they lack the wisdom and prowess people had to develop when computing was more expensive and difficult, and they weren't distracted by their damned phones all the time. -Noel2 points

Since both AMD and Nvidia will stop supporting 7 and thus 8 and 8.1 is this the point, where we start calling even windows 8.1 "Legacy" Operating system? Will we be able to mod the driver ourselves? Windows 10 Monopoly is very scary1 point

@IXOYE I can confirm, with latest Serpent 52.9.0 on Vista SP2 32-bit ... My EU IP results in a blank page when attempting to load https://mevius.5ch.net/ Serpent 52 will also produce a 451 HTTP error, but you have to open the Web Console to see it: However, I'm not convinced this block is implemented necessarily on "our" European side, nor that it has to do with being inside a "Western" democracy (BTW, did you vote in the recent French elections? When citizens abstain en mass from elections (as I've heard was the case...), so called "democracies" rot into oligarchies - OT, of course, here, so apologies for bringing this up ) ... On further testing, Asian and US (yes, US of A) IPs do load that hostname, so perhaps an ACL (access-control-list) is imposed on "their" side? OTOH, why would the Japanese block EU IPs? Not a new thing, sadly... The net hasn't been a liberal place since at least ten years ago, if not more... "Political correctness" and rights restrictions (for media content) imposed by the big powers that be have placed strict geo-blocks on what one can access freely from one's physical location... And I'm not even discussing authoritarian regimes that censor net access as a whole; I'm simply talking here about net censorship in "democratic" regimes/states... That is why VPNs are considered a must in this day and age... 28/06/2021 EDIT: It does indeed appear that the EU IP block is done on the Japanese side, as a result of them not willing to conform to the GDPR EU laws; relevant reference from the wikipedia entry for 451 HTTP Error:1 point

GusCE6, it is possible to put a WMP or VLC plugin in the browser. With which you can watch video in 360p example on Windows XP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-6MczEoa6I example on MX Linux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhltXEaJHmU Hardware acceleration is disabled by default in Firefox on Linux. If your video card supports OpenGL 2.0, enable it layers.acceleration.force-enabled or layers.acceleration.force In Firefox 78 for SSE, be sure to toggle these settings media.cubeb.sandbox - false , security.sandbox.content.level - 2 (for Alsa).1 point

Hello! I hope you are well after the time MSFN was down (I thought it would not open again and was a bit worried). I have compiled more information on the browser in these links (I recommend you to use google translate to read the pages, one of them is in Japanese): https://mevius.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/win/1599682854/95-194 http://effect8.ru/soft/browsers/360-extreme-explorer-portable.html https://board4524.rssing.com/chan-64145222/article193081-live.html I am almost close to finishing a modified version (from the original v9.5.0.138). I was able to remove the connections made by the options in the browser preferences through the chrome.dll file. I will post the modified version somewhere (I don't know if you can recommend a specific platform to upload it to) so you can try it out and let me know what you think. It will not depend on the "Preferences" file so there is no need to worry about the first run of the browser. After finishing with version 9 I will start with 11, 12 and then 13. Greetings.1 point

But... but... but... Wasn't 10 "the Windows to end all windows"?1 point

Was Microsoft update selected rather than Windows only, and was .NET 4.6.0 manually installed first? (It wouldn’t deliver updates for 4.6.1 because that version did not officially support 2008 SP2 or Vista.)1 point

There has obviously been some sort of drama at Eclipse, so perhaps win32 will return to MSFN, or at least let us know where the future of the extended kernel now lies.1 point

Guess I placed the imdisk folder directly under tools to make it easier to update it. Some guys may confuse with the different architecture names (x64 == amd64) && (x86 == i386). The x86 subfolder is still there for 32-bit wofadk.sys, if you want to setup a 32-bit windows with WOF support.1 point

I believe that VMware's drivers (like vmx86.sys) are missing functions at the moment, and some Windows 8 functions will be needed as well. There is also a version block that prevents VMs from launching starting with 11.0.23 and 12.0.1 that will also have to be defeated. I hope to accomplish this in a few months. It will be very ironic to have VMware 16 working on Vista hosts, considering that its guest additions don't support it!1 point

Wow! Am I dreaming?! Vista Extended Kernel is a reality?! Thank you, @win32 for putting work into this project and bringing it to fruition, and creating this tutorial. This is something that has been discussed & yearned for among those of us "old-timers" in the Vista community as early back as 2013/2014, and the closest thing we ever got was @smeezekitty's proxy stub DLL wrappers for Adobe Reader DC & Catalyst Omega, but unfortunately he has been inactive since 2016 I never thought anyone would ever come forward with a full-blown extended kernel project. This is very exciting & promising as I had planned to stick with Windows Vista indefinitely, but worried for the future as software support (namely browsers) has continued to diminish. I'm not much experienced with any kind of coding, but if I can be of help in any way, do let me know. I apologize to everyone here in the Vista community for being so inactive lately. Being an "essential" employee (letter carrier for USPS) during a pandemic is not easy! Package volume is through the roof since no one (understandably) wants to get out Hope everyone here is staying safe.1 point
