Another reason why the IoT may not be that good an idea ...
Tripredacus replied to jaclaz's topic in Technology News
I recall the original TiVos had linux on them, and there was some way using the remote to make it go to or boot to a prompt. -
Zipped important files and now Winzip won't unzip them
Tripredacus replied to PeterRussell's topic in Software Hangout
We had changed our spam filter some months ago, and 1 result (strangely) is that the first part of the tandem spam teams make it through registration, but not the one that would reply with links. Once in a while the 2nd one gets in. -
Download DISM for W10 version 1511?
Tripredacus replied to johnhc's topic in Unattended Windows 10/11 Installation
The DISM that comes with ADK and the one with the OS have different capabilities. The one with Windows is limited in what commands it can do. -
There are a lot of problems concerning how the Windows 8.1 Update (or even the 10 Update) works!

Maybe they're still having the problem? -
DISM isn't designed for making backups. You definately should look for using something else.

OEMs only done this because Microsoft forced them to. Dell were quite happy sending out Windows Reinstallation DVDs with all their systems and Dell customers were quite happy that they could readily clean install with this media. They were then not allowed to include the Reinstallation DVD with the system. To market it as an improvement they stated it was green policies not to send out discs with the system. However still send out a Dell Drivers DVD for some time which of course was useless without the OS Reinstallation DVD. There are far more customers complaining that they did not get proper installation media with their system than customers complaining they got too many discs and that it wasn't "green" especially on the home consumer market. A UK PC chain company who tried to help their customers got sued by Microsoft so it is Microsoft who are making life difficult and not the OEMs[...] --JorgeA This is only partially true. MS requires a recovery solution of some type to be available with the sale of a computer and this has gone back to at least XP. That meant that if hard disc based recovery was provided, then the OEM could sell a PC without the Recovery CD/DVD. I first saw this configuration with Sony VAIO in 2003. However, it is not to mean that just because you have hard-disk based recovery that a disc is not allowed. The "forcing" of adding a recovery partition is a 2 part problem. First was MS idea to unify the product lines with Windows 8. While they could have said "if the hardware is of x configuration" (like they do for other things) then it wouldn't be required. They did not and thus did require recovery partition for all Windows 8 (and newer) OS that they pre-installed. Second, consider early market forcasts of the time indicated what is true. Computers are being sold without ODD and of course small-form tablets and the like do not have them. Still, it does not mean a disc cannot be provided. So in summary: 1. Microsoft requires a recovery solution to be made available with the sale of a computer. 2. This recovery can be recovery partition, DVD and/or USB 3. DVD or USB recovery can only be made by an Authorized Replicator (see lawsuit mention in the quote) The complaints people have about the recovery media not coming with the computer or having to pay for it later are against the OEM and not Microsoft. This is a decision the OEM has made to keep costs down. Sony, for example, used recovery CD sales in XP days as a profit booster. If it cost them $10 per disc to make it, they would sell them for $60.

The HDMI Audio will be in the Sound section. If no drivers are installed it should say High Definition Audio Device. Either way, it will have HwID with VEN_8086. You can use the Properties of this device and then choose Update driver and point to the folder where the drivers are.

HDMI drivers, at least Intel ones, have their own INF. Look for Intcdaud.inf, usually packaged with the video driver but in another folder.

There is no kit available for one to purchase and install Windows 7 Starter onto a computer. It is one of those OS that you can only get pre-installed onto one. Home Basic is said to have an activation restriction, where you can't use the OS except for in certain countries.

Corrupt excel .XLS file (OLE header corruption?)
Tripredacus replied to CharlesMorris's topic in Microsoft Office
That is viewable with a hex editor. Perhaps a string viewer can be used. -
Ultimate would seem to be a waste because the actual use of the computer does not match what Ultimate offers. I typically just recommend Pro edition unless being able to play the built in Solitaire is a firm requirement.

How to avoid being "upgraded to Win 10" against your will:
Tripredacus replied to dencorso's topic in Windows 8
Files of this type go back to Vista at least. These names are not always their actual names, but names in this format is what is commonly displayed in Dependency Walker. These are almost always indicative that a redist package is missing. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17023419/win-7-64-bit-dll-problems -
I see upgrading as a matter of need. Do you need Windows 7 Ultimate for something? I still have a computer with XP and I see no reason to upgrade it to a newer OS. XP still allows it to do what I need of it.

Unless I missed it, have you yet posted what the HwID is yet?

I believe that the Shell key is loaded after logon. There used to be HCKU Winlogon Shells in XP, maybe you can use that instead.

What is the hardware ID of the Intel Video?

It wouldn't be good advertising, since Amazon makes money on keeping websites up with their cloud service.

Save the screenshot as a JPG in Mspaint and upload it to an image hosting site like Imgur.

The funny thing about that "eye candy" thing is that most people complain when a UI is changed. Facebook is a good example of that.

YES/NO Abandonware term doesn't change and it doesn't matter who made the software. Abandonware is software where no one retains redistribution rights to it. This happens when: - the company ceases to exist - the company releases the product for free - the copyright expires That particular site looks more to be a software archive of (mainly) floppy disk releases. However it does contain things that are not abandonware. No Microsoft system file is redistributable, no version of Office. This one not only contains Windows and Office products, but also contains cracks for some programs that require CDs.
