  1. According to Microsoft's Product Lifecycle FAQ: Windows Server 2008 gets ESU updates until January 10, 2023. This means that if we could get Windows Vista to: Accept updates for Windows Server 2008 (already done), and Accept ESU updates for Windows Server 2008, We would get support until January 10, 2023.
  2. Hello. It seems like only a little while ago I was asking for help to get audio drivers on an old AMD system. Well, that system is starting to show its age (especially the iGPU) and is having trouble with newer running software. So I moved the hardrive with the W2K to the new machine: Dell Optiplex 7020 i7-4790 (Haswell) Intel Q87 chipset ~Limited XP embedded support GTX 750 ti ~XP driver available 8 GB DDR3 500 GB HDD + 320 GB HDD (Windows 2K) Now, this presents a problem as XP support is limited on systems newer than Ivy-bridge and 2000 is non-existent. I also had a partition of XP on the 2K drive and was able to install almost all drivers except USB 3.0 (XP has limited support anyway) and an SM Bus controller. So I started installing Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 over the old 2K SP4 Professional installation. I made sure to change the BIOS to ATA mode before the installation (That was the only other option). Windows 2000 SP4 installation went smoothly until it hanged on "Setup is starting Windows 2000". I searched this forum and saw that the communications port needed to be disabled because the W2K setup incorrectly identifies it as a floppy disk controller. After that was resolved, W2K installed with no issue except while it was detecting devices. Two error dialog came up with errors pertaining to "usbhub20.sys". After the system finished setup, it rebooted to a BSOD with this message: Safe Mode could not be used to overcome this, so I booted into the Windows 7 drive and deleted the usbhub20.sys and backed it up in another folder. This allowed W2K to boot, but with no USB 2.0 support. I heard that W2K has issues with USB 2.0 on newer hardware because it has old drivers. The device manager shows many unknown devices. The most important of these are USB 2.0, Networking, and graphics drivers. The first thing I attempted to do was install the Windows XP embedded network drivers for this chipset (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24555/Intel-Ethernet-Drivers-for-Microsoft-Embedded-Operating-Systems?v=t these worked fine on the XP partition). When I use the device manager to install the drivers, W2K states that it was unable to locate a driver for the device, even if I specify the directory. I do have a wireless USB networking adapter that supports XP, but without USB 2.0 there is no hope of getting that to work. I decided to just try updating Windows 2000, starting with IE6 SP1 and the SP4 update rollup 1. The next thing I went to install was IE6SP1-KB2817183-x86 but upon trying to install this it states "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on on this computer". I tried using Start>Run and using regsvr32 to register dlls as suggested online, but sccbase.dll cannot be found and the problem is not resolved. At this point I am wondering if I should abandon this altogether, and be happy with XP (after fixing Win2K's corruption of XP, that is). Help is greatly appreciated!
  3. Hi, I have an old NT4 server with mirrored SCSI drives. I got a message that the mirroring had failed. I accidentally destroyed the boot partition on one of the drives while trying to fix it. The drive that will boot is old and out of date. I do have a series of up-to-date tape backup. (The booting drive does not have drivers for the tape drive and I'm having trouble finding drivers for it.) Is it possible to fix the boot partition on the up-to-date drive? If not, how would you recommend I recover the system because it is critical for my business? Thanks

  6. Have you ever looked at the logon screen in Windows Server 2003 R2 and thought "Wait a minute. Something looks a little bit off here." Well, you'd be right. In every version of Windows NT 5.x there are two banner bitmaps that are used on the logon screen. One used for the logon prompt, and the one used for the status messages between the differing stages of logging on. That is every version, except Server 2003 R2 (and also Windows XP Embedded, but anyway.). It looks like this: For some reason Microsoft just never bothered to make two bitmaps. But I did: See. Much better. Most of you will probably think that this is totally stupid and doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. But for those of you that do think it matters, here are what you need. These registry values for Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (only). Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CustomBrand][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CustomBrand\{F20B21BE-5E3D-11d2-8789-68CB20524153}]@="r2brand.dll, -1001"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CustomBrand\{F20B21BF-5E3D-11d2-8789-68CB20524153}]@="r2brand.dll, -1002"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CustomBrand\{F20B21C0-5E3D-11d2-8789-68CB20524153}]@="r2brand.dll, -1010"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CustomBrand\{F20B21C1-5E3D-11d2-8789-68CB20524153}]@="r2brand.dll, -1011"And this modified version of "r2brand.dll" with the new added bitmap images. http://www.mediafire.com/download/786f3e33er8vao4/r2brand.dll Note: This is not for the x64 Editions of Windows Server 2003 R2. Replace r2brand.dll - through the Recovery Console or whatever method you have - first, then run the registry file. _______________________ For those of you not running Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition, you'll need to delve into the registry a little bit. Got to that part of the registry and you should find references to the same resource in r2brand.dll. The bottom two references are the banner for the logon prompt. One is a black and white basic image, and the other is the full colour version. (the one that needs to be changed). The full colour version that we need to change in this case is the 3rd one down in that list of four keys. Change the value in that key to the number that corresponds to your version of Server 2003 R2. Example: If you have Enterprise Edition, use 1013. If you have Datacenter Edition, use 1015. Reboot, and that should be that. Sooner or later I'll come up with a registry file that works on all three major releases of Server 2003 R2, and then maybe the x64 Editions.
