  1. Weird indeed. Did you check your nlite preset if it had delete clock.avi in it. It used to have it anyway. I dont have it there anymore, but maybe you had old preset section loaded at some point.
  2. Sounds like you possibly have AHCI mode for SATA drives in bios enabled. Possibly keys to launch bios when starting your pc is F2 key, DEL key, it should say what key to enter bios when you boot computer. I dont understand how you managed to insert autorun.inf with nlite, lol, but dataguard lifetools is more of a program that enables you to modify partitons on your system as i can understand it. If you boot xp cd and it cannot find your harddrive, i would guess ahci is enabled. I personally dont see any really good reason to having it enabled, as IDE native mode for SATA will work just fine in most cases, tho i dont have your puter to check what options are there. Anyway, you should look up your dv6000 for drivers, not your harddrive manufacturer, they cant provide you with drivers for your mainboard, as they didnt make it. I got a bit confused, along the way here, but well see how this goes.
  3. There are several ways to utilize a multi core cpu efficiently. Speaking of own experience i usually set any games to go at core 1, leaving core 0 for system, as is default anyway. People have different way of doing this, you can either at some programs hex-modify the launcher, use a batch file with a utility that start the game/program exe at specified core only and with priority f.example. I like Launchnset, its very simply, albeit a bit buggy on adding/removing things, but it works perfectly. Tho it misses out on setting priority of launched game, it works enough and has nice small gui. Performance wise, i'd go with a .batch file for each game, like cmd.exe /start game.exe /REALTIME, but u also need a thirdparty tool OR modify game exe files, to launch it at only 1 core. I know at least this is very poplular in the CPMA/Pro-mode arena, and possibly quake4 and similiar, not really into that new stuff myself. Anyway, it will give you fps boost, unless the game you play is dualcore+ optimized, its the way to go.
  4. Just for laughs i set my pagefile to 32mb, nice number, and photoshop hasnt complained yet, nor any other program fyi. Im not saying one should simply disable the pagefile and dont do anything else to have it disabled, but i do disable it. Photoshop doesnt page a **** thing here, i guess its happy with 8gb ram atm. And 3d, VMM does work in shades of gray, but as far as reading posts goes, you're -10 newsposter. And please dont make assumptions and base your opinions as fact.
  5. Nlite has support for extracting 7zip files so in theory that should work. About installing IE its better to use a IE pack that has all recent fixes in it. Check ryanvm forums. I used one and integrated on a xp sp3 for someone and it worked perfect. Also its more space concervative as crap has been trimmed most likely, and you avoid unnecessary windows add/remove entries. That was about it.
  6. I think floppy should also run as a system boot service. Therein might be the problem. Doesnt it say anything in the inf files? Im on xp x64.
  7. Im curious, what modifications did u do to the custom kernel files?
  8. You mean sfc? Thats probably it. on patches page.
  9. I spent a whole day, 8 hrs a couple of weeks ago, trying to slim down adobe cs3. My one and only goal was to remove all language files except english, native in installers. It worked. Then i updated programs. All languages back in. I might have missed something, but i kinda doubt i missed everything lol. Id do it again, but only if i know how to integrate the updates so i dont have to update afterwards, plus at least saving some more duplicate dlls. Its just insane the adobe cs3 packages. It installs f.ex EULAs for easily 30+ languages as an example. Insane amount of bloat.
  10. I know you must also get SFLOPPY.sys and its ini file. I recently did a bit of looksee into that. thats the only 2 .sys files needed anyway. Should work.
  11. I think you may perhaps have completely forgotten the IE settings programs running on each login. They are hidden. I have removed mine so cant find out what name is atm. There's 2 IE startup programs running on each boot/login. Which sets settings for IE apparently but could be many things. Use tool as Jv16 to remove them.
  12. Local policy as well as group policy editors are just that, policy editors. If you can manually tweak it, you should try and avoid policy editing. If really slim and fast nlite windows is what u aim for.
  13. IF you use same computer name in VM as on host, there will be problems. This could also be for similar stuff. I have no idea but, Internet Explorer-Set Homepage-www.google.com, tweak could possibly be changed to Internet Explorer-Set Homepage-www.yourwebsite.com but if that works i have not tested. I dont use IE.
  14. Yup, AFAIK the KEEP and REMOVE section in nlite cant keep files under fonts dir. At least as much as i remember atm. For all those using this program, and knowing this, its sweet. Having many fonts can also add to boot time, also uses more system memory. Many good things come with keeping a slim system. My xp x64 nlited xp hasnt crashed yet and i used to have some troubles lately. At least i know that didnt come from nlite, if anything its more stable then ever.
  15. Nlite will not remove previous service pack that is integrated on the iso. Perhaps you could just delete them. dont really know, i always slipstream with a windows cd that has no updates/service pack on it.
  16. I made some time ago a nlited xp sp2 for some one else, and had enabled the numlock active tweak. didnt cause any problems. It would probably make some confusion perhaps towards handicap settings which can enable user to use keypad instead of mouse, but that isnt going to be a problem anytime soon.
  17. AFAIK slipstreaming just the sp1 all lang. version doesnt give you necessarily all languages, you need to slipstream sp1 language packs as well.
  18. On remove page in vlite you should be able to find parental controls there.
  19. Possibly. Under [Protection] in your preset file.
  20. Can you rename the administrator account?
  21. Im in XP x64 atm so cant check service names, If anyone is going to tweak network services, please attempt it in a VMware or similiar, first. Messing with your actual host install is a bad idea, if you dont know how to revert things back to default, alas backup is handy: (if u just skipahead, you miss out probably, plz read ) 0: First, a reminder when messing around in registry and you know you will do something windows doesnt expect per se, i always unload/disable any thing on startup from run and runonce and whatnot registry keys as well as from startup folders. Also remember the hidden systemprofile. In addition, to tweaking network services, i would like to point out one other important thing that should be checked into before u get to that: Task scheduler in vista. It contains a lot of program/task schedules, that i *of all my heart and mind strongly suggest* you look into 1st. I dont even know where to begin with that, but like disable and delete the bloody: customer improvement experience program trancient multi monitor manager (i have multiple monitors, and they worked just fine, its a laptop external monitor thingie tbs.) The all upnp services (doesnt mean upnp wont work) bluetooth unloaderloader service, as well as for wireless disk defragging service and boatload of totally other crap. This is important: *EVERYTHING* is *connected* *somehow*, and if you tweak something, read: do any action that disables something that something else relies one and when that tries to operate, and get answear it cant coz the service/program/task isnt available, isnt running, is deleted or whatnot, you end up getting system delays, event log errors, and all things could really, really crash and burn, and before you know it, you are thinking you need to reinstall. It's vitally important that anyone going about doing tweaking know their stuff, because unless you take precautions, as in backup, and you are prepared and have the time to fix the system, you should not be messing with services etc that could break functionality that you actually need. Either you are ALL-IN or you should stick with just disabling stuff that windows actually provides an option for. Going about in registry and services.msc for that matter, isnt to be taken lightly. And Vista is so bloated, it can quickly become a headache to keep it all together. Enough bloated talk: ... I'm simply saying im not responsible, lol, and take you PREcautions, being sorry afterwards isnt going to help. Having said all that : Please read all of the following first before you start messing about on anything: 1: simply start services.msc on vista 2: Find f.ex network list service, and take note of the actual service name. 3: Start Regedit 4: F3 and input service name. Should start search under currentcontrolset (not 001 or 002, just "currentcontrolset) btw. 5: Export the registry key and check that it contains the service as original. 6: rinse and repeat for remaining network services, this is very important. you need this incase you make a total mess, or simply to be safe for that matter. 7: Now that all backup is done. You should check on your network adapter, that you UNCHECK things like iPv6 and everything except tcpipv4. The reason WHY you should to that, is because you are going to tell windows then, to not need any other network service, for the time being. This is good as you prevent, at least in theory, windows to access/start other things. And windows like to do things we dont want it to do, lol. 8: Now lets see, i have to think, hmm.. the utterly crappy IpV6, this is a whole other story as well. Crap. Ah yes. You need to add to registry a Dword 32bit key, Called DisabledComponents. Look just google "ipv6 vista" and disabledcomponents. It's a bitmap key and i believe the value should be 255, but dont take my word for it. Im having a hangover, so bare with me lol =) You see vista is so-called-made-for-the-future-and-is-by-default-enabled-for-all-such-new-s***-that-most-people-dont-actually-use. But could perhaps use. Ipv6 is strongly built into vista and cant be taken away/disabled lightly. you need to also disable AFTERWARDS some of the network devices, under device manager, network devices, not your network card tho lol, so that you minimize ipv6 things. Now i have long since realized this is too complicated to undertake explaining it all here, so should probably start another post and take more time to build the answear... Anyway, you should by now have all things disabled in network, and removed dependencies, make sure in registry keys you have f.ex the RPC service standing and its a *empty* line beneath it, alas memory is failing me at this point but not all services dont necessarily have it. But its a crucial windows service anyway. dont mess with it. *period*. Now check back on, enable, network lan on network card under network connections. you shouldnt need the new services, just keep printer/file sharing and sharing for microsoft network. Pain in the arse to explain this without reference lol =)))) all the network services you disabled, should not start even if set to manual. However, do not panic if they do start, it simply means you have missed a service. I think i failed utterly at explaining this, and feel i have forgotten something =(. ANYWAY! You would have at least managed to get a bit faster startup-time of vista, since you not having such network service on automatic, and they wont startup automatic before they are needed (they shouldnt be needed if u have disabled/removed all dependencies needed) . IF all services start anyway before you have accessed lan, you have missed something. and of course, network connections service shouldnt be on auto. I think you also need to disable something else not directly thought of as network. I just cant remember atm.
  22. I recently noticed that difference on xp x64bit at least is that with genuine xp sp2 x64 there is no ntoskrnl.exe in driver cab, apparently its packed in by nlite itself. Actually, it was the OLD ntoskrnl.exe still stuck inside the driver.cab ON a slipstreamed sp2 cd of xp x64. Knowing a bit about microsoft and their habits, this leads me to believe in your case that slipstreaming/installing SP1 got screwed up at some point. Or it could be when installing the os too of course.
  23. just google JKdefrag gui. I actually dont use the gui version, i find the defaults quite satisfactory, and whenever i need to take off or so i can just start the program and dont need to do anything else. For me thats perfect, dont have to think more of it. And time saved! Total profit in my book.
  24. OK, u could try the basevideo approach as well. I would however, uninstall your graphics card drivers. Then i would go ahead with a tool such as http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ I havent tried driver sweeper, i was actually searching for driver.net something which worked very well. Basically run such a tool get rid of all system dll exe sys files, inf files referring to your graphics card, all registry settings. To get rid of all nvidia/ati what not registry entries, use a tool as Regseeker and search for everything gfx related and delete. System reboot, and reinstall drivers. Also possibly check out omegadrivers and try those, tho i would prefer WHQL certified drivers myself.
