  1. Yes I'm sure. Look here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en The date published is May 6. Quote from the link you provide: " * Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Home Edition N; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Professional N; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Starter Edition; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition " Where does it say 64 bit in there? 64bit XP is NOT the same as 32bit xp and never, ever will be.
  2. Congratz on your first post =) http://msfn.modrica.com/board/lofiversion/...php/t84504.html
  3. create directory systemroot\resources\themes\yourtheme\ copy wallpaper, cursors and whatever you like into yourtheme. Customize cursors select wallpaper etc. Save theme as systemroot\resources\themes\yourtheme\mytheme.theme Select theme with nlite. done. You could also reside to a simply registry setting, but at some point you still need to copy the wallpaper. Better just make a theme imho.
  4. Where does it say it can be removed? I dont see that in your 1st post here. In any case, it is prolly one of the good things to leave well alone anyway. Also cryptographic services, can that not be removed? I run with it disabled always. Needed for updates etc, but windows updates can be "removed" so dont see why i need to have it.
  5. I prefer Exact audio copy over DB poweramp, more so that it is free. Like the accurate rip function. Have ripped my whole cd-collection with EAC.
  6. Yes, i like it better this way, since fewer files on dvd and it's cleaner, at least i think so, it makes future managment easier. I'm going to simply rename the directx_jun2008_redist.exe into mydirectsetup.exe so i dont have to edit the batch file for each directx update (and have to extract it and so forth every time) A small detail yes, but such small details added together makes for a better install in the long run. Automated tasks are nice. I think i also have found a good way to disable pagefile via batch file, and finally found out the right registry settings to perfectly disable mouse acceleration, if you're interested. I'm so looking forwarding to a real re-install atm. Now if only booogy could add some removal options of DRM in wmp11, so i dont have to do it myself =), this is getting somewhere (i found also ways to remove several things i deemed not necessary for wmp to function, such as portable devices, network sharing, and so on.)
  7. Do you understand the concepts of file system and formatting drives? In short, you need to have drives formatted before you can use them. Preferrably with ntfs for speed as well as safety, over fat/fat32. In my last post i was referring to your 465.76gb unallocated, non-formatted drive, that is at port 0 on motherboard, where your system drive ought to be instead.
  8. fast way to remove pagefile from a fresh windows install. add cmd /R %Source%tweaks.bat which starts regedit.exe /s %source%tweaks\disablePF.reg ---disablepf.reg---sof--- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] "NonPagedPoolQuota"=dword:00000000 "NonPagedPoolSize"=dword:00000000 "PagedPoolQuota"=dword:00000000 "PagedPoolSize"=dword:00000000 "PagingFiles"=hex(7):00 ---disablepf.reg---eof---- tested and works perfectly here. edit: forgot to add that pagefile.sys is still created, but it is not active. It can be deleted upon first login. And that can again be done in an automated task.
  9. I have never had such problems, but if you want to be safe, just simply open the preset in notepad or other editor, and copy&paste as you see fit. I'm doing a install with 1.45 preset loaded into 1.46 now and everything seems to work just perfect.
  10. Most likely you have then downloaded the wrong version of the hotfix. Unless you have removed some components which makes the install process fail to determine properly what operating system is running, tho i dont believe this is the case here.
  11. Any ideas folks??? Thank you all. Stoner81 PS - Im going to see if i can sort out a virtual pc with Virtual PC from Microsoft and run it from there. Overclocked pc? In any case i'd check what drivers are installed, having 50 000 different drivers sounds like trouble, and like a lot of well, bloat.
  12. There's no 'dependency' on hyper terminal afaik. Also there are much better alternatives, it's a very old program, not needed for windows to work itself. Remote desktop dependencies i find interesting, if it could be properly removed, while still keeping terminal services- service, in windows xp, would be sweet.
  13. My winsxs folder is at 32mb, not very large compared to vista which counts gigabytes. And yes, its XP. I'd like to see a tweak to disable mouse acceleration, i'd be very happy with that.
  14. Kurt, an alternative way to install directx, while still using your batch file approach. Tested and seems to work fine in Vmware, going to try on real install. : directx_jun2008_redist.exe /t:"%temp%" /q pushd "%temp%" start /wait DXSETUP.exe /silent popd As you can see, this bypasses the need to extract the redistributable file, as it does so on showtime. pushd is command to specify which directory to go to, and popd will erase content of temp. Of course, paths to files must be present. popd and pushd are windows commands. So %Source%directx_jun2008_redist.exe f.example.
  15. Hello all.. In some drivers, nvidia graphics card drivers f.ex., there are several things i dont need when integrating the drivers, for example i dont need the *setup files as well as .bmp files and so on. And then i also dont need/want more specifically the uninstaller registry entries, as i want the drivers to be cleanly installed into the system as if they was with the xp cd originally. So in order to make a batch file to delete text from a .inf file, i would need some kind of tool to do that, that could be run via batch file, and of course the point is to have this down to an automatic task, no input then required. If not there is such a tool already to do the entire task, i think i have read somewhere about such a tool for drivers, but i cant seem to remember/find it. Any thoughts?
  16. I use nlite to patch what you are asking for, all custom themes work perfect. I dont know if it's legal to upload the patched file, but it so i'd be happy to help. As how to get hold of it yourself, i remember using the auto patcher program, and for me that worked on sp2. You might look into doing a install in a virtual machine and simply copy the patched file from it, thus creating the install image with nlite. Should work perfect. I am aware that this is 64bit.Which i use myself.
  17. Ok so you know that your password is correct. Let me go out on a limb here and say that you are using the welcome screen, and not the classic login screen. Press and ctrl-alt-del 2 times in rapid succession, to enable classic login screen instead of standard welcome screen. Enter username and password. Also there might be a conflict if your computer name is same as user name, which shouldnt be possible to make in the first place, but i have read posts where this was the case.
  18. Also note that your system disk is shown as disk 1, ideally it would be shown as disk 0, being the first disk. One simple reason is to have windows recognize it as the c:\ drive upon a clean reinstallation of windows.
  19. I would look into the xp 32 vs 64 and vista 32 vs 64 bit thread for more information, as far as msfn goes. For me one of the great things about 64bit windows, is that system cache is practically unlimited per date, and with a any recent motherboard with a bit of ram, everything flies on xp x64bit. I tested 64bit vista, and while i liked it, it never could give me that instant response feeling that is with xp, and my hardware is all produced in 2008, a 5.9 system (max vista rating) so hardware isnt the issue. If you do run into a problem with xp 64bit programs, feel free to drop me a PM and i'll do my best to answear it. I've helped quite a few people convert over the years. It's really nothing to it today. As long as motherboard and cpu is 64bit capable, there wont be any problem in most cases. The big guys: ATI, Nvidia, Intel, practically all motherboard makers, just about any keyboard/mouse will work with 64 bit at the very least, and most if not absolutely all will provide a 64bit driver. In regard of drivers, i'm happy about 64bit vista, tho i think it was a pity they still made 32bit only versions as well. With so cheap memory today, it's really not much point sticking with 32bit, unless of course only demands are simply things as surfing, playing old games etc. Even so, 64bit is more aimed at the future is then 32bit is, regardless of how one looks at it. As a happy sidenote about vista 64bit, i've seen that 64bit vista drivers also will work with xp64bit. This in rare cases where the producers simply forgot to mention this. One example, and actually a bit odd, is ati's 64bit serial ata native drivers. It isnt needed, but it will work perfectly on xp64 as well.
  20. Thank you very much. The problem often is that while some things may seem foolproof in one's native tongue, doesnt make it so if you're not accustomed to *think* in that language. Reading and writing isn't everything. I actually still didnt quite understand it, but as long as i know how to do it, then that will do just fine.
  21. 1. WinRAR/WinZIP, ok 2. ACDSee Pro 2, not tested that version that i know, acdsee normal at least runs fine. 3. Adobe Acrobat Reader, ok 4. Alcohol 120%, ok 5. AVG Antivirus 8.0, ok 6. BS Player/The KMPlayer, edit: forgot to mention, this also works ok, both of them, tried and tested. 7. Codeck Pack All in 1 (or some other codeck pack that works), ok 8. CyberLink PowerDVD Player, ok 9. Daemon Tools, ok 10. FlashGet, ok 11. Internet Explorer and Mozilla FireFox, ok 12. Nero, ok 13. Partition Magic, ok 14. QuickTime Player, ok 15. rmDC++, not tested, i know dc++ works just fine, shouldnt be any problem. 16. Skype, and again, ok, no problem either. 17. SpyBot - Search & Destroy, works fine 18. TuneUp Utilities, yes 19. microTorrent (also known as uTorrent), of course, 20. Winamp, and again of course... I think everyone of those programs, works 100% ok. Xp x64 has matured a long way since it first was released. Those few things that doesnt work relies on 16bit for the most part. And in any case if one actually needs 16bit, it's more effective to go with a emulator or such now a days, because computers are so fast, not p1-133mhz, that the 16-bit game or what not, might simply not work anyway the way it was ment to.
  22. Great update Kurt! Reason why i posted them programs with silent installer options is mainly because they are system integrated and doesnt go into any customizable 'program files directory' per nature. I will consider making such a post as you say, and keep it clean. Perhaps later today. In any case i will keep following your guide. A true timesaviour. Thank you so much! A small reminder for anyone thinking of doing a fresh install, microsoft removal tool is updated every month, and june version is out as well, the 1.42. I dont mean to be an jack a** but i see there is Adobe reader on the list, when Foxit PDF reader is so much more lightweight and faster, doesnt add it self to startup or anything. There are several versions for download, i used the .msi version as it clearly allows to be installed with f.ex "/passive /norestart" parameters. Install takes 1 second on my puter. From website: What's New in Foxit Reader 2.3 (downloads here) Foxit Reader 2.3 is just released. The new version 2.3 includes a multimedia player feature allowing Foxit users to not only read PDFs, but to watch and listen to the audio/video elements coming with PDFs as well Cheers.
  23. Actually, Microsoft did explain it to you in plain English and quite clearly I might add. They also very nicely explain exactly how to delete registry values: Both of those quotes come directly from the MSKB that you linked. Now for what you want to do, it's be exactly as GrofLuigi has said. Let's say you have a test application that you want to stop from starting up with the computer for every user account. You would put this into your .reg file: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 = Windows 2000 and up REGEDIT4 = Windows Me and below. So since you're working with Windows XP Pro x64, you would have: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "MyStartupApp"=- I would advise that you slow down and read through things thoroughly before jumping into things. When you edit the registry without knowing what you are doing, there is a great potential to cause problems. If anyone is unfamiliar with the registry, it's best to leave it alone. You can put it however you like, english is not my native language, and at the end of the day, nothing in the link said to me that look, this is the syntax this is what this is and thats that. GL explained it in a single sentence, and that's all there is to it. A good example of kiss in effect imho. If you look at what i thought was right, and try to understand my pov, you would see it then made sense, even that i did know it was wrong.(why i posted in the first place)I simply tried what the ms article said in what way i understood it. Why slow down? Life's too short.
