  1. If computer's cpu is heavily utililzed when playing off video, then the computer most likely never should have run vista in the first place. I take it this is a joke? Seriously, i have a 700mhz duron cpu, it doesnt bloody complain. If you guys are running vista on p2-350mhz and are reporting to nuhi that it doesnt work to remove this service, seriously, vista wasnt made for that crap. I went to creative.com website and the last driver that i could find for the live card was from 2007, and it was 1.04.0065 which differed from the previous beta from 2006 which was 01.04.0055 . Does it look like creative is thinking they need to support such products? Well does it? As for the Via soundchip driver, a company who doesnt even own its own name online. Well darn', i cant even think of what to respond to that. I guess i didnt know Vlite was a tool to make vista work for windows 98 hardware. =) In the end, for most computers, made for vista, i have tried ac97, realtek hd audio, x-fi xtreme, with low end cpu, with high end, and taking into consideration that realtek is by far, the mother&father of most onboard anything on any motherboard, it will probably work without them. The computer doesnt do errors, people do.
  2. Long story short, Vista is made for new hardware and as such otherwise perfectly working hardware will not function with it. I have a decade old HP 3300c scanner, which works flawlessly under any new, hot linux distro. But there will not be a driver for it under vista. If you can't sell enough stuff, i guess you have to force customers into it. And people go thinking, ok so if it doesnt work under vista, then it can't be good enough for me..
  3. First of, have you removed anything from the image you are integrating on? And if u remove anything after integrating ie8, what is that, ?
  4. I am one of the lucky bastards who have a intuos 3 wacom tablet, now this tablet, on a non-modified vista pre sp1, required the tablet pc service to run, in order for the pen to work. Obviously this is of course bloatware and can be remedied =), however, as you all know, eerr, the snipping tool is/can be kept even tho you remove tablet pc software. Possibly that is the error, which is also the only thing that made sense from that error log.
  5. I've never really used the MS remote desktop, always kept to vnc, better freeware alternatives. Have you tried with no tcp ip patch? Also maybe you need to keep Administrative shares enabled, at least that makes sense in my head, at least if you are going to be server, as in the receiving end.
  6. I used to do this concistently, err spelling, with xp 64 and 32bit. But over the years i moved more and more to portable programs and finding other solutions. Now i only install software that goes with system updates, and keep programs and games totally off the c:\ harddrive. I use registry files which have the installations captured so i dont need to ever install anything apart from windows updates etc. The end result being a lot less log files, registry bloat, and installer files that are STILL kept on c:\, unless you move that as well. It's too much work in the end imho, unless it's for setting up a server and part of securing it etc, i dont see the point.
  7. That's probably the weirdest analogy i've heard in a while considering it's so much different, rofl! =) But yeah, its probably best to use it if u have it, staying on the safe side, hehe..
  8. I think it would be nice to have both? I also found it confusing at first, so you're not alone =)
  9. I would also like to recommend this strongly. I learned it the hard way, lol. Currently as far as i have experienced, Vlite doesnt update the entire vista image/cd. However, that may also be the case because SP1 in itself is not ment to update every file on the cd. Still, it's definitively better to use that i will assume as it is from MS itself.
  10. It's the s*** v2 kb 938371 if i dont remember wrong, have another post on it here. Needs to be installed for future ms updates, including sp1. There was a v1 version of it, maybe you for some weird reason need to update it to v2 and windows update think not. It could be a lot of things.
  11. I did a test the other day and did a install with the 5language version and one with the All language version. I didnt keep pictures, ie documentation, but i kinda could not get the same size of the images. So there was something differing, and i couldnt pinpoint it to be the languages as far as language removal goes in vlite, which i dont really know apart from nuhi himself.
  12. I was a bit trigger happy on this one, i couldnt see the 1_0 thing because of the window was sized so small =( However, the hotfix in topic still integrates again and again if you let it, actually perhaps they all will, i cba to check that atm. And size will increase of image. Not that this is such a big deal or anything, but i seem to recall that if you tried that on nlite, the program wouldn't let you, as it already was integrated. No biggie, but it shouldnt happen imho.
  13. Thanks guys! I had the pre-sp1 version for amd64 at 75mb which didnt work for apparent reasons (figured what version it was after it crashed =)), so i had to download the 1400MB iso. Just to install a tool at 1/20 of the size. Now if that isn't bloated....
  14. I dont understand what you are talking about?! I'm sorry, but i am using onboard sound as well. Also computer browser, file sharing etc, all running without them other new network list and whatnot, totally utterly crap services added only for fancy pancy map functions for lan. I might be going always a bit further in some conversations, but i swear, this totally works on my onboard anyway. It's also a micro-atx mainboard, so it aint that fancy, its actually quite cheap about the same as 3 good pints =) Also, I dont ignore anything, well if im not drunk, but i havent been in these conversations i think =) I have been tweaking computers since forever. Heck my xp boots at 8 seconds with file sharing and all. Still it doesnt beat my amiga 1200 thats boots in 5seconds from powering on computer! Cheers!
  15. Ok thanks for clearing things up! I have sucessfully installed xp pro x64 sp2 all fixes all ie7 all wmp11, with dotnet3.5 at a 3GB virtual c disk with no problems. However, you MUST have Print spooler set to automatic! It will fail if not or crash or whatever, here it simply stopped half way with some obcsure error msg. I googled it and sure enough, Print spooler must be active.
  16. Bump. Im suprised no one has answeared to this?! Imho for my part it basically means integrating sp1 with vlite, is totally useless.
  17. Depending on what you want or need for vista to function, you can get it down a lot. I'm currently in a Vista ultimate x64 sp1 msdn version, everything integrated from dreamscene to sound themes to bitlocker. Runs at a cool 20 processes, and everything is *enabled*, i havent removed sh*t, everything is there. So if there ever will come that i should need such services, i still have them =) As far as finding what services u can safely remove dependencies etc, i think u are on your own. I have made 4-6 network services disabled safely, and can still surf lan and internet. Good sites to read on what services are doing in windows, i mostly think eldergeek.com first and blackviper second. But mostly i just use the info displayed in the msc console itself, ie services.msc. Now maybe i should do a backup before i tweak it too much =) Oh and get rid of the bloody keyboard layouts. Took half a second off here =) 11+ ppl saying no in the poll. Apparently the red warning in vlite scares people =) Not good..
  18. The reson why you want too use windows server as a workstation in the first place, is because it's faster, more secure and reliable. That is a fact. People ask why it's faster and more reliable then windows xp/vista? The reason is because it's cost 5-10 times more than vista/xp and that's a must for big coorporations/firms. There are plenty of linux distros for server, that's why windows have much more competitors, equal to xp/vista where there are less competitors. That's why MS is focusing alot more in making server 2008 the best/perfect OS made by them. Look at the updates for server 2003, it has alot less updates then xp. xp have sp 3. server 2003 has sp2. So removing stuff form vista or adding still will NEVER get vista to be as fast as server 2008. ut it can be hard to install certain programs on server 2008 (I guess) because most software firms charge alot more for the same software if it's for server. It depends on what you are doing on your PC. If the programs work flawless stay with server, if not stay with vista or xp. Jesus, you are more off topic then i am, lol! Props! I will bet you anything i can make vista perform just as well as server 2008. Also you obviously dont know what you talk about on the sp's as you don't know the backgrounds on the service pack versions and take into comparison when what was released. That's just plain silly and kinda shows your either ignorant or perphaps arrogant =(
  19. Sounds good B) How do you remove the dependencies? HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSrv note: From there, select DependOnService, and remove dependencies there. NB: First STOP services, (audio service will stop too, as it thinks currently it needs mmcs and wapb, but once dependencies are removed it will happily start without them)then set them to disabled or manual, before removing dependencies. I have only tested some games and windows sound themes. Vista runs without these two services just fine!! How's that for bloat? =)) There are lots more thats safe to remove on dependencies, but trying to stay on topic =) It should look like this after removing both (notice that there is a EMPTY line after the Rpcss service, i dont know if u need to have it, but it's there on default so..) If someone would like to do some benching on before and after, that would be cool.
  20. Please note, if you also remove dependency for the windows audio endpoint service, you can stop it and disable it as well. Audio will still work! The less services required for vista to run properly, the better imho. I just tested windows sounds themes, and sound themes works ok apparently. Cool? Perhaps this info could be added to post #1.
  21. I have probably told nuhi this, but thought i'd post it here anyway for comments. I have integrated this, and as you can clearly see in attachment, the other updates are yellow, and kb938371, white. I first integrated KB938371, in a single run, alone, no other actions, because it is an update for vista's installation routines (for future updates, so high priority), to be on the safe side. Then i integrated the remaining, as in yellow. If i now try to integrate KB938371 again, it will do so, adding data to image, even tho it is already integrated. Note, this is V2 of the hotfix, V1 is integrated in SP1. I think this is the culprit. It also works to integrate this V2 before you integrate SP1, which i have found to then reduce the image size. However, since SP1 slipstreaming in Vista doesnt seem to update all files anyway, i'm going to forget vlite slipstreaming atm, and rather use msdn image. Somehow, there should be a way to determine the difference between the V1 (built into offline SP1 pack(not windows update version)), and v2.
  22. NP. I'm interested in hearing your findings with server 2008. I havent tried that.Tho i do remove alot with vlite, so on services side, it should be quite similiar. I remove everything except network. Also you can get rid of needing WMP by using f.ex media connectivity plugin for firefox. Which works absolutely perfect with VLC Portable. And i also use Portable Firefox. So All i have to do is to run program to set portable firefox as default browser and vlc portable as default media player. Also works great with GOM player, Mplayer For Windows, and heaps more, but those i have tried and works perfectly. *Including* streaming media. But of course, be prepared to do some configurations. Maxthon is easy as it uses the IE core, so if all else fails.. While im at it, have you tried comparing 2d gfx performance in 2008? Use PerformanceTest program. 2003 was 50% faster on xp on that test here.
  23. I havent tried the waik or imagex and those tools, but seems like only way to go. Are there any particular steps i would need to do to accomplish this? You make it sound so easy =)
  24. Hello. I find that when integrating All language pack version of SP1 contra Five Language pack version, size of iso is different. Of course you say, well it is also different when removing all languages with vlite. Is this caused by extra keyboards, some fonts or what not? Anyway, it would be nice if there was possible to make english version only of SP1, or some way to customize the SP1. Before slipstreaming it. I also noticed that when slipstreaming sp1, it doesnt update all files files, see attachment for difference between vlite sp1 slipstreaming and msn sp1 version. Just took setup.exe from root of dvd. Also boot files etc are different versions.
  25. Yes but that would defeat the purpose i think, as it would add the customized by nlite comments, and possibly also add extra files. I want it to be as clean as possible.
