  1. True, but the same applies to 98/ME/Vista from what I have seen.
  2. I got two of the beta versions, (5384 and 5536) but I never really ran them after trying 5536. So at this point, I wouldn't care either way as I won't be running Vista on any of the computers I have now. During the summer I will be buying a brand new laptop, so it may have Vista on it. So I'll go with it then.
  3. I think he wants to turn off all the icons such as "My Computer, My Documents, etc" and then remove that side of the start menu. Kind of like have a cross between the classic menu and the new start menu.
  4. I know the default Windows 98 color scheme is in Windows XP by default. linky
  5. Are you overclocking your chip? If so, try running it at it's native speed. You may be overheating the chip fairly fast and the motherboard's thermal limits are being reached.
  6. I've used all kinds of different OS's, ranging from Linux (DSL, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Frugal ware, Dream Linux, and others) over to Windows 95 and up (all versions, 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP) and I have never really be comfortable with any version other than Windows XP. Its purely a matter of personal preference though, you may like Windows 98, you may like Windows XP. It's all based on who you are. I have been using a lot of laptops lately, not necessarily super fast machines, (ie, less than 500MHz) and I have run XP on all of them. They all have run well. If you want to use Windows 2000/XP, I highly recommend nLite to remove some of the things you don't like. Using nLite, I have gotten machines that are 6 years and older running a very up to date machine with full wireless capabilities, and all kinds of new software working on them. It's true, Windows 98 is much better for older systems, but because of advancing hardware and software, your going to need to update soon. Web browsers are already beginning to not support the 9X core. So, if you wish to use a lightweight system into the near future, your going to have to use at least Windows 2000 or higher. Or a Linux distribution of equal capabilities. Now, these different topics about "Which OS is better" and stuff, aren't the same as this topic. This topic was a question simply asking what the alternatives were to this older OS. Its a very simple question, which I hope I answered helpfully. Other people who look at a thread like this and figure "This is a hit at me" or something like that, shouldn't bother answering just to avoid further conflict. If you don't like what you see, just simply look the other way. I'll be the first to admit not to like Windows 98 because of the experiences I have had in the past. But others may have had great luck in getting it to work properly and running well. But I still to this day don't see it as being a viable OS for purposes that need to be quite reliable. However, I'm not saying its a terrible OS that should be banished from the Earth, I'm simply saying that from my own experience I'm not crazy about it. It's the same thing that happened with Windows ME. Everyone seems to hate it, but I myself have never had any problems with it. It's all a matter of your own opinion, and don't hate other people over it. Simple as that.
  7. I'd suggest a really nLitened copy of XP Professional SP2. I'm using it on my laptop (PII 366, 128MB ram) and it just flies. Just go through nLite with XP, and remove as much as you want to make a really speedy OS that can install in less than 10 minutes. As always, use VMware or VPC. They're both free, and they're both great.
  8. I know theres ways in themes to disable the icons, so I'm sure that there is a way to disable the text part of it. However, I do have one question for you. What theme is that?
  9. If they were to make this so called "expert" version, it would just be Windows 2000

    LMFAO! good stuff
  11. You may have a problem with nLite, try using the latest version. I beleive the latest is 1.3RC, if that is the one your using, try using 1.21. You never know black wolf, good one
  12. As with all software, there may have been vulnerabilities that were fixed, but there most likely is new ones. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just don't be going to those "FREE!!!" ads and stuff, and you should be just fine with IE5.5/6/7 and Firefox/Opera.
  13. IMHO, It's just another thing that kids will be using during class, and people will be using while driving. More distractions to make an already "dumb" nation, even more "dumb". I use the term "dumb" for most of the kids of today (I see it first hand, trust me) and most of the adults too. I've seen people reading newspapers while driving. It really irritates me because they are the reason my insurance rates are so high. (dumb doesn't apply to all, it just doesn't apply to a select few)
  14. For the most part, I use my mind. Just being careful on the web. On top of that, I do have AVG free antivirus installed, CCLeaner, Ad-Aware, and ZoneAlarm firewall + a hardware firewall in my router. I haven't had a virus in the 10 years I have been using a computer (I have been using since I was 6 [i feel like a drug addict ]) nor have I had any malware garbage on my computer, or anything of the sort. I've been fairly lucky in all my years experience. If your careful, and don't let any questionable things on your computer, you should be good. It is a good idea to have some cleaner programs on your computer just in case, so you don't lose any data, but it is a good idea to reload a system after getting a virus. It would just ensure the computer runs good. I've seen many computers that have had a virus on them and then been cleaned with software. They don't run right at all. Usually the virus does some damage to files and it doesn't work right afterword. Anyway, I'm out for tonight I think.
  15. I just run a pretty much unaltered version of Firefox on my machines. I don't really bother with plugins/extensions because I find Firefox pretty good "out of the box". I have had different extensions installed before, like ad-block, but that slowed down my browsing, so I took that off. I had this thing called "Server Spy" that showed you what the webserver was on the current webpage. But after a reload, it never returned. There are some good extensions, but I have no use for them, I don't do much on the web any more. Just browse MSFN and Wincert.net, and thats about it
  16. I'm pretty sure that some UPS's (not sure on models) actually hook up to your computer to do just that. Theres some UPS settings in power options for the UPS (I can't check right now as I have removed that part of Windows with nLite).
  17. I'm not completely sure, but I think that the file "WIN51IP.SP1" should also be there. Can you post a screenshot (or text file) of all the files (and folders) on the root of the disc? If you could do that, I can better help you sort this out. And welcome to the forums! Edit: Ok, scratch that, "WIN51IP.SP1" isn't there on my XP reinstall cd, so that's not needed.
  18. I'm not sure what kind of vehicle you have, but in my dads work van (Astro, so lots of room), they use this thing that secures on this box that's in the middle of the seat. It's actually just a tv stand that was meant for holding a tv on a wall (kind of like in a hospital room). I know this wouldn't really help much, but it may point you in the right direction to get something or even modify something to work. Alternatively, you could just get this thing like what I have in my house, its a board with a pillow actually sown onto it. You can put that on your lap and use the computer that way.
  19. Which plugins are you referring to? The newer versions of Miranda seems quite stable and easy to install plugins under.
  20. Looks interesting, thanks for the post. I'm going to install IE7 right now and give it a shot. Thanks again
  21. I'm not sure which version works, but I do remember running 2.0 or something working on my 98 machine. It did suck resources too, but it did run and was functional. Have you tried Miranda IM? It runs on 95 I think, and it's extremely lite weight. Uses 3 or 4MB of ram on my XP machine.
  22. Remember to use the "View new posts" link at the top of every page
  23. Thats funny they say that, I have found this kills them faster.
  24. Even though this is an old post, I'm extremely surprised no one said to hook the modem up to the computer. Either way, glad to hear you got it working.
  25. This project looks promising. I've actually been thinking of switching this laptop back to Windows 98, but I was hesitant to do so. This just gave me the motivation to do so, I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Keep it up NL-Stitch!
