  1. In the BIOS setup there is a "Frequency and Voltage" option, find the setting for "RAM Voltage", "DDR2.5" or similar, and set it to the first setting above standard (normally +0.1v, +0.2v, +0.3v, etc.)
  2. You can try overvolting your RAM and then testing again, or underclock it. It might save you from having to buy new RAM.
  3. Not allowed here. Read forum rules:
  4. I prefer downloading from Microsoft, since they seem to have much faster servers. I've gotten over 11MB/s downloading from them.
  5. You mean the File Edit View etc.? I don't think those can be removed. It's by design. They are actually useful for doing commands quickly without the mouse. Otherwise M$ wouldn't have put them there in the first place.
  6. Use a resource editor to edit explorer.exe for the banner. It's #157 in the bitmap section The start button text is in the string table, #37. This is what you mean?
  7. Infact, the strange thing is, if I shut down and plug in a hard disk drive, after I turn my PC on again, it wants me to reboot again! That's with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Windows 98 SE don't have the above issue. Once Windows 98 SE detects the hard disk drive, it's ready to go! I've had that problem on XP, but with just plugging in a USB flashdrive: Strange thing is, I didn't need to restart it at all, and it could read/write fine!
  8. Look through the DOS boot disks available here: http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/t...%2fdoswarea.htm (Translated for those that can't read Chinese - "shifting plate" means boot disk) This one is quite good:
  9. The software probably loaded some monitoring process in the background which caused the conflict.

    XP Updates

It's your own choice whether or not to install them, seeing your list there I probably wouldn't install them either.
  11. "Unable to change attribute - C:pagefile.sys" this is the response i get. any ideas. btw thanks guys for your help Either you're trying to wipe the root of the drive or your pagefile has been set to the directory you're trying to remove. Change the location of the pagefile to somewhere else, reboot, and then try again.
  12. You have a missing font, it's using the default Windows System font (the large bold text) and can't calculate the size of the window correctly. I'm not sure which font is missing but what usually is used there is MS Sans Serif. Also consider running your monitor in 1024x768 unless it's a 13" LCD that can't handle a higher resolution..
  13. Read my previous posts. If the drive works fine there's nothing wrong.
  14. This is why I always set it to show all the files, hidden and system. It's most confusing otherwise. (Windows won't even boot without the system32 folder, so if your Windows runs fine it must be there...)
  15. You can do this, but you'll have to rename all your other .EXEs or .COMs to .ABC... Open command.com in a hex editor and find the .BAT.EXE.COM string near the end. Change the .EXE or .COM to .ABC and save the file. Now, .EXE or .COM files won't run, while .ABCs will.
  16. Bad hardware design to have the software control the cooling... maybe Apple did this deliberately to discourage people from trying to run Windows on their computers?Strange that nobody from that link you mentioned had the thought of just opening the Mac up and directly wiring the fan to the PSU...
  17. Does this happen at exactly the same time every day?
  18. Norton Ghost will help you there. If you reinstall and you still get the same problems, then you can restore your original drive image.
  19. They changed to MSI now? I'm still using Photoshop 7.0 and it used Installshield installer... If it's an MSI then just use an MSI editor on it. Otherwise it'll be more difficult. Application Installation forum might have what you're looking for.
  20. I don't see anything wrong with that picture... You can adjust the color and fonts of your tooltips by going to Display Properties -> Appearance -> Advanced -> Tooltips.
  21. Never used? Probably then... but then consider the fact that M$ probably doesn't care about 98 anymore and whether or not someone would buy it.
  22. Run msconfig.exe, under Advanced... option see if VGA 640x480x16 is checked.
  23. Ask HP for it? I don't think recovery CDs are downloadable as they are customised for each individual version of system.
  24. P2P and torrents already hold much of the software that ever existed... don't worry about availability
  25. Good point. Maybe you can see it as a shell running inside a shell?DOS kern -> COMMAND.COM -> VMM32 -> EXPLORER.EXE realmode ----- realmode --------- 32bit -------- 32bit ------- kernel ----------- shell ------------ kernel ------ shell --------
