  1. I'm looking for the ultimate boot disk which will run classic games (sierra, lucasarts, etc.) on a Win98SE based system including CD-ROM generic drivers, expanded memory support, etc. I realize there are many by searching google but instead of sifting through the thousands, wanted to know if the experts here could recommend an all-around great one... I'd also like to know how successful/compatible is DOSBOX on Win98?
  2. I've finally found the solution because of everyone's help. Thanks again. It was one module which was single sided; the others were double sided. 96 MB should suffice instead of 128 MB. Should have spotted this long ago...
  3. Now I'm really lost. What is this Google you speak of? Of course anyone with USEFUL suggestions still welcome..
  4. My mistake. In the Bios it reads: Base Memory: 640KB Extd Memory: 63MB I'm assuming the 63MB is the RAM. Yet, in the post test, it seems to detect what I explained in an earlier post. Strange. Win98 still says only 64MB. Perhaps it's the order the RAM is installed on the mobo? Outdated Bios version? No idea. Any tips? Oh, and there is no onboard video...mobo is a Tomato CreateLX-AT / Intel 440LX AGP Pentium II 6DLX from 1996. I'd still like to know what that MemTest86 is...please explain.
  5. The Bios detects all three dimms, even in the boot screens (32, 32, and 64 respectively). I'm not sure where or how to run this MEMTEST86. Let me know. Also, I did not alter any system.ini file. Basically I let windows detect everything. Everything else is running fine and I have downloaded all available updates for hardware and software. This is the last thing which needs fixing. Appreciate the quick responses....
  6. My Win98SE new install in an older system is only recognizing 64 out of 128 of my RAM. I have two 32 dimms and one 64. I cannot be sure which set it is seeing. Any recommendations would be great....
  7. Well, here's as far as I got, right after the XP was to reboot for the last stage of its setup: STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Beginning dump of physical memory Any clue on how to proceed? I've tried rebooting and reinstalling with the same results..
  8. Ok, it's been a month and believe it or not I'm now just getting a chance to follow through on these instructions. What can I say; work sucks. Before I go ahead, what is the absolute first thing to do after booting up for the first time? Everything is recognized in the BIOS (thankfully) including the CD drive. Is it just a matter of throwing in the XP cd and letting it format the drive or do I use some disk utility before the OS? After the format and when XP is installed, is this the time to install all the included drivers (on cd) for the hardware? Do I trust the cd drivers or go with the xp versions for now? Of course, once I'm actually online I'll download the current ones. -Just making sure I do everything in the proper sequence as it's the first system I've built and I don't want to backtrack..
  9. Good plan. What I'll do is get the files burned to CD, then do the reformat on the old drive. Unfortunately I don't have a burner on the old system to do this now; will the old XP files interfere with the new HD XP install until I do this reformat? I can't see this being a problem as long as I don't install both drives at the same time.
  10. So I've finally upgraded my computer. What I need to know is after I install my new HD (WD 250GB SATA2) and install XP Pro and get it up and running, can I add my older HD which had XP Pro (NTFS 80GB) on without formatting it again? Essentially, I'd like to simply plug it in to access those files. -Just double checking in case something goes wrong. I cannot lose those older files. Using: Athlon 64 3200 K8Neo4 Platinum 1GB RAM
  11. Hi, I'm here with the intent on getting everyone's expert help on finally upgrading from my PII 300 to an Athlon 64 3200. Yes, quite the jump...and it's about time.
