  1. That will cost a lot. Unless you have $10000+ worth of data, it'll be cheaper to find an alternative solution.Google "data recovery programs" - most of them are not legally free, but even the limited trial versions used repeatedly should work well enough to recover your data... but make an image first! That way you can go back to the previous state if you accidentally do something wrong during the recovery. A disk editor is also of great help.
  2. Can you "calm down" the system by shutting off unused services? Also look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\ where you can adjust the settings of the memory manager. Details at http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware...nxptweak/3.html This heavy disk activity is something I've noticed is specific to the NT-series of OSs, since I have 2K/XP/98SE tripleboot, and the XP/2K tend to do as you've said when it's idle, while the 98SE just sits with no disk activity at all when idle.
  3. Ignore all the incoming connection attempts. They're mostly harmless. Someone is probably just portscanning you. Outgoing connection attempts, however, are more concerning.
  4. Some people just don't have audiophile ears, like me. I can't really tell the difference between integrated audio and ultraexpensive add-on sound cards.
  5. Is hardware acceleration for your video card set to maximum? (Rightclick Desktop, Properties, Settings, Advanced, Performance...) The rippling effect can occur if hardware acceleration has been disabled and the processor has to do the scrolling instead.
  6. You are mistaken. It is probably not the device itself, but its driver that needs changing.
  7. All the versions of IE that I've used only downloads with one connection per download, if you use a download manager that supports multiple connections you can easily get higher speeds - even to the point of saturating your connection.
  8. 54°C is not above the temperature limit for the processor, I wouldn't worry about it unless the increased power consumption is showing up in your electricity costs. The CPU is designed to withstand such temperatures continuously without damage.
  9. I know on Win98 it's Control Panel -> Network -> [your adapter name] -> Properties -> Advanced and then there is a Power Management option there. On WinXP it's probably in the same place, I can't remember exactly but it's with the network and not the system properties. Does the configuration program for the card have any power management options? Usually they're under Advanced Option Setting or similar submenu.
  10. I'm guessing this worked, or he put the HDD in another computer with a CD-ROM drive and copied the files there.

    THE TEST

On 3dmark the AMD beats the Intel by only 0.85% while on PCmark the Intel beats AMD by 33.82%. I declare Intel the winner of this test The difference with PCmark was much larger than I had expected.
  12. So here's where Link21 went... in the NT forum... Strange that there aren't any threads in the 9x forum bashing NT OSs
  13. Does your BIOS have the ability to mount and boot from it? If so, plug it in before turning on the computer and let the BIOS mount it as an HDD.
  14. Check the power management for the card to make sure it's set at Disabled. Some of them have difficulty saving internal configuration when powered down due to inactivity, and need a reboot to reinitialise. You can try disabling/reenabling the card in the device manager. If that makes it work again, it's probably the problem mentioned above. This problem happened to me with a Netgear card and desktop computer. It would not reconnect after it resumed from Power Saving mode, but disable/renable in devicemanager worked. I just set the power management properties to make it stay on all the time.

    THE TEST

The Intel needs to be overclocked. A 3.0GHz could probably do 3.6 with stock cooling. Either way I think the results are going to be quite close.
  16. The PowerISO looks like only an expanded WinISO to me...
  17. MotherBoard Monitor? http://mbm.livewiredev.com
  18. Are you sure this was caused by the patch? This line: Bytes in CS:EIP: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00is especially strange... trying to execute a null buffer? The pagefault itself is not in the kernel though.
  19. Try notepad.exe instead?
  20. Foreigners don't know about use of CAPITALS XP MCE is a completely separate OS from normal XP home edition...
  21. Surprisingly little is needed for very basic OS functionality. http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/r...o-services.html Windows running with no services at all.
  22. ME is also related to the 9x systems, that is why it works (a win95 shell also works on 98se for this reason). XP is more related to 2K and NT4 than 9x, they are very different and it won't work.
  23. You could try copying NTLDR and the kernel to a second hard drive, attempt to boot from it, and it'll probably give you errors about missing files. Copy those filenames that were mentioned, and repeat the process...
  24. Were all those spelling errors in the original message? Does your BIOS have the capability to mount USB storage devices as HDDs and emulate them as such completely, as well as the ability to boot from them? I've seen this problem mentioned before here, maybe searching around might get you the answer.
  25. What ports are open? You'll need to tunnel through an open port, preferably with an encrypted (SSL) connection.
