  1. If you prepare this on an NT-type system (2K and up), HashMyFiles is excellent (stumbled across on MSFN - worth re-mentioning...).Thx. Will try when time permits. rloew ROX!!!
  2. In case jaclaz doesn't get back faster... http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html Go the Freeware route (unless you already have a commercial burning software). Google those package names, download, install on the good PC (where you should have downloaded the ISO Image), and burn the Image (which is an IMAGE of a CD) to a CD. Another relatively good Freeware is ImgBurn.ImgBurn example - Select Mode (tab at top) - Write Select File->Browse (browse to the ISO image and select it) Select your Burner (be sure a blank CD is in it) Click on the bottom "Write" With commercial burning software, usually you just have to have a blank CD in the burner and double-click on the downloaded ISO (software figures out it's an Image).
  3. Forgive me if I sound dense, but...It appears that the IOSYS Zip file first needs applied and then subsequently the above manual patch to correct all known bugs? (sans the Saunderson patches, i.e. ONLY your patches are necessary?) EDIT!!! Just read your above "edit". - Just the above patch covers all "known bugs". Correct?
  4. 1 - I think the implication is you HexEdit it yourself with the above.2 - A little, yes. You have to think twice after reading to get the gist. Got a little bug myself that I haven't got around to trying (above) patches (except the jds) on yet (haven't had time to boot/test the 98SE yet). In my case, the last Logical Drive on the Last Logical Partition is a 42.8gb (as seen in Explorer) NTFS partition. edit - and data on it, so don't dare attempt resize+add small non-NTFS after... rloew will probably confirm/deny assertion #1 pretty soon...
  5. Some info - Answers - Microsoft dot Com Two links within. Notice that it claims - 1 - Slipstreaming/Integrating anything will "break" Repair Installs REGARDLESS of method. 2 - vLite will integrate Hotfixes fime 3 - RT7Lite may work (see links inside above link) 4 - Technet link also given to WAIK documentation (WAIK is needed in any/all cases) 5 - SP1 pre-integrated by MS is generally available (MSDN/Technet subscribers can get this ISO) Technet - SP1 info MS Official SP1 download Beta SP1 problems - DO NOT USE A BETA Anything beyond SP1, as appears to be stated above in links. As was stated, DIY slipstreams/unattended instructions but NO ISO's OR LINKS PROVIDED! (Warez gets a person banned.) Unattended Subforum HTH (no I don't have Win7 installed or have attempted any as of yet)
  6. Try a power strip or in-line extension cord switch.
  7. Did you see this? Yep, WUv4 is history, along with just about everything Win9x-related. Get your fixes from here/MSFN. See all links within said link and any advice given. Also see Sticky topics (at top of sub-forum).
  8. In order to get WinRE to deploy using an answer file, you need to do some things that are not in that document. Thx... (again, not there yet - steeel larnin'...) Um, yeah... thx for reminder.
  9. HPA -"Host Protected Area" (Dell MediaDirect) http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/mediadirect.shtml "Hidden Protected Area" (Wiki-Wiki) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_protected_area Either one will goober you, hence suggestion of using HDAT2. Provided this is an 80gb (P)ATA HDD, I would think it was originally from a Dell Desktop, and not a Laptop of any sort. Read the Dell link I gave. Dell did some strange things to the HDD with MediaDirect. Still, strange (a/l to me) that HDAT2 reported what it did. Must have gotten a "used" Dell HDD with MediaDirect on it... Reading the Dell link given, I would assume that "inaccessible" part (FAT12?) is forever lost as far as usability. Sorry, that's all I can provide. Beyond that, jaclaz is "the man".
  10. Hope you have the recovery partition still on it... Better check the manufacturer for a "restore to factory" procedure (IF there is a recovery partition). Not only do you need the key, you also need the associated OEM certificate for the given PC/Laptop. You'll probably have to "restore/recover" and get that item as well. Dig into that and how to build an OEM-type install via unattended XML (using the "magic" key) and the vendor's/OEM's certificate. HTH (and, no I don't know or won't say anymore than above). hint: the certificate goes with a special storage area within the BIOS.
  11. Humor me... Find and download Hex Workshop (trial available) OR HDHacker. Hook BOTH drives up and boot the GOOD drive. Using EITHER tool, read Sector 0 of the PHYSICAL drive of the problem-HDD Hex Workshop will ONLY read as many bytes as the BIOS indicates (unless it's boogered). HDHacker should ONLY show roughly 4-5 lines of data. This SHOULD be about 512b. That model is an 80-gig and I sincerely doubt it has "Advanced" sectors (also pulled the specs). NO WAY (as jaclaz said)!!! Jumper settings - http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/other/2579-001037.pdf Jumpers should be on the END where the CABLES hook up. You DID say (P)ATA and you have indicated as much in your (markings) post.Is the BIOS set to AUTO for the HDD? Have you got the "limiter" jumper on HDD? Set the jumpers ONLY like the document says. Bottom line... you are doing something wrong...
  12. You have to sign up to be an OEM "System Builder" at Microsoft (nearly anyone can) - creating_a_windows_7_hard_disk_recovery_solution.pdf
  13. AWE64 WDM Drivers - apparently worked for this person. Not sure if it would work for your particular case (or if you even already have them...)
  14. Main page - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4308554 (click on "Solve a Problem" -next screen-> "System Recovery" - methods listed) According to what I found, F11 should get you to the HDD Recovery option. Otherwise, the Recovery CD is supposed to be bootable as it is a standard Win7 bootable disk. (read some of the above to see what I found). Manuals - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4308554& edit - to follow-up on Ponch' post, there may be a difference in the method depending on the source of the CD. supplied when bought vs. created at initial startup (you DID do that after first powered-up didn't you?). In case#1, this is probably (and should be) a bootable standard (usually) Win7 (no drivers/extras) plus (potentially) a Drivers/Software disk(s). In case#2, (usually) the first disk gets you reloaded and the remainder finish up.
  15. ? I had thought that WIM's could be made via SysPrep on a reference machine that "generalize". Using that and the script (as proposed) should work for imaging (and NOT just by RIS/PXE but also a secondary HDD/USB-HDD or even a DVD). Have a look at these (search the WWW for them - I don't remember the links directly from MS) - creating_a_windows_7_hard_disk_recovery_solution.pdf OEMTechnicalGuideForWindows7ForSystemBuilders.pdf edited for above - I remember now... I signed up as an MS Partner/System Builder. HTH (haven't yet tried them - planning on Win7/2k8 soon...)
  16. Why? There are several pre-packaged packages. All are also listed (links to the MSFN topics AND direct links to the packages). Most components placed in said packages have come from either MDGX and/or MS directly and/or MSFN. Newer/other/additional components can be found within the Stickies or the links therein. Have you tried the 98SE AutoPatcher (most "patches" are in their original form) or SP2/SP3 packages? (bet ya haven't... ) All you need to "modify" them is the knowledge of how the "package" is created (that is if you REALLY want to mod them). P.S. The said "packages" are nearly all-inclusive (or even all-inclusive) of the last available patches for 98SE. Do check them out before starting yet another project, unless you have a better way. P.P.S. - Sir DeadDude... I noticed several other topics in which you simply need to follow the instructions OR dig into the MSFN forums. Everything you need is here... (no offense intended...)
  17. Interesting... (don't have WMP11 installed BUT...) Have you tried "pasting" into MS-Paint? (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories)
  18. per LoneCrusader's post (and I believe he is correct) - v4.12 - Found here (other versions as well) - http://am.net/lib/tools/Microsoft/Hardware/ Filename - IP4_12EngALLMsi.exe Gone from the MS website (I believe this is the last 4.xx version available)... Some "odd" info (re - "POINT32.EXE") - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,1498573 (implies that a "RUN" registry entry exists) Various info - http://kbalertz.com/837910/Mouse-wheel-events-Visual-Basic.aspx http://wapedia.mobi/en/IntelliPoint Edit - Intellipoint 4.0 (at DriverGuide) http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=61727 Also found here - http://download.amdsb.ca/drivers/mouse/microsoft/Microsoft%20Intellipoint%204.0/9x%20ME/
  19. Seeming unrelated topic -
  20. http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/29/ Methods 2 and 3. Method 2 is for (any) non-"real" OEM. Method 3 is for "real" OEM (e.g. Dell, HP, etc.) Having a "generic" key works for the kit. Method 3 is for big OEM's and requires the OEM key for the associated manufacturer/PC plus the four files. Big OEM's have a special agreement with MS to get those files. Method 1 is the topic being discussed by the OP (the Activation Servers).
  21. ? Have you tried DBAN ("nukes" the HDD - totally clean writes zeros) then "start from scratch"? Is this an "upgrade CD or a "full" (retail, or OEM)? "NTLDR" is missing - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057 You may have more than one partition AND the Boot Loader in the MBR is probably still Linux (not sure if that would have anything to do with it?). Try getting a DBAN cd image, burn it, boot from it, and "nuke" the whole HDD (an SSD or a HDD???). ASUS EEE PC Specs - http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/901_1000/en/specifications.html So, which one is it? (I see no CD/DVD, but must have one - have a floppy? probably not) We need more info. BTW, I believe several other members have an EEE and may be able to help (dencorso?) more.
  22. 1 - Reduce to a smaller Screen Resolutionand/or 2 - Reduce the Refresh Rate (60hz is standard for somewhat "flickery" Wall-Outlet-speed Hz...)
  23. Let me get this straight... You have a USB-connected ADSL Modem (drivers required) You want to use an Ethernet-connected ADSL Modem. Ethernet Modems do not require drivers - the connect to your PC's Network Card (which need drivers). In either case, you will always be "on" (AFAIK). I have a NIC-connected Cable Modem and just press the "Standby" button. In your, case, I would assume you just "turn it off". However, many ADSL "modems" also have a built-in router (configurable for incoming blocks; a firewall). It all depends on the model your ISP provides (ask first). You might want to get a Software Firewall if it doesn't. Check into one of the (many) firewall threads for more info.
  24. Listings given are member-contributed based on their own testing/experience. Try it and if it works, then you say so in the relevant thread (this/your topic doesn't explain which thread you refer to) . Include any "problem areas" you may have experienced. edit - I assume you refer to this thread...
  25. Not-necessarily OT... I've beat my brains out over the Dell Utility/Recovery partitions MBR/PBR (using goodell's info). A worthy note is a "Sector 18" copy of some of the MBR (the Partition Table). Amazingly, the sectors AFTER the first Sector of the Partition (those "reserved" -NOT HIDDEN- sectors) is NOT 32, but rather 38!!!If you search on "fatgen102" as opposed to using the kind-of CURRENT "fatgen103" the information, albeit a slight older, kind of helped me figure it out. They have many a warning about "false assumptions" (e.g. "how to REALLY identify fat12-fat16/fat32). Of course, you all may already know this... edit - durr!!! BTW, interest in this is because I have two Iomega Zip-100 (IDE-cable type) and a single (apparently foobared by a shop magnet) disk and it would be interesting in "resurrecting" it since the dang things are hard to find and rather expensive.
