This article (polish only, sorry): http://www.fixitpc.pl/topic/49-zabezpieczenia-robaczywe-ataki-poslaniec/ Describes SMB and corresponding ports as a threat to the 2000/XP/2003. Although it is based on old data (see last post update) it describes things somehow similar to the ones corresponding to the bug patched by M$ this week, i mean RCE using SMB. Post do not say, which SMB it is, but I guess that v1.0 is what will appear in older systems If you are paranoid and do not share files, folders and printers over network, simply block the corresponding ports. If you are just cautious, just be sure to hide your LAN behind router and follow most common good practices (do not open shady sites and files etc.) and you should be fine. You are not worth being APT target

It might be simpler that expected - maybe you have accidentally chosen to always block ActiveX formants on Windows Update site when prompted? Also, your Internet Security, antivirus or whatever protective software might cause problem with windows update. My Avast! does not only cause Windows update troubles, I also have to disable it while scanning. Are you sure you have installed the same hardware driver for browser that worked previously? Maybe you should look for old CD with printer drivers you might have somewhere, or dive deep into the internet to look for other driver version. But beware of bad bloatware sites!

Sorry I'll make that up. Anyway, you say that Silverlight more or less works despite not being supported for IE8/XP, right? Or do I miss some information from other sources?
-
https://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/get-started/install/ Do I get it right, no more Silverlight updates for IE8/XP/POSReady 2009? If so, we might need to suggest everyone to uninstall the crap?

Run some 8-bit microcomputer or console emulator atop of it. http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Windows_98 Wouldn't that be ooo-som?
-
Again, M$ has unhidden six of the updates available on the list. This is ridiculous.

According to my quick search, it's only a typo, and in fact there should be there isn't. Or there is some sophisticated language trick I cannot catch? Only old Win98 physical media are legal way to get that system. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ff723773.aspx Reference from Wikipedia. Agreement refers to the lawsuit between Sun and M$ about usage of some Java branding, and dozen sources pop up after simple search. When did capitalism need a reason to sell anything? If the trend will keep, not for better. Major systems will be more like smartphones, if I can take a guess. According to netmarketshare, not really. I has grown 1/3 of its current state within 2 years, but consumed Mac users instead of Windows share. Actual 2,05% Is pretty close to the third sigma. See above, It's actually getting better ^^. -
I see it as an code box while quoting. both double clicking and shortcut captured work. It's also not an image when I select your post and order browser to show post's source. It's <pre class="ipsCode"> this should not be an image </pre> I'm using Firefox on Windows 7 x64 with a few extensions. Providing us more details about your system might track someone to the right solution.

And, out of curiosity, are similar CD's still somehow distributed, or did it all move to the internet?

Note to mods: I wasn't sure which board the topic best applies to, I won't feel offended if it needs moving somewhere else. http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/things-every-hacker-once-knew/ An article written by Eric S. Raymond, who, after further investigation, appears to be a major persona in Unix/ Open Source community. The thing speaks about the days of minicomputers, like PDP series, and provides reader with the most important facts about the times IT technology, that are now nearly forgotten - a workflow basics of an IT pro somewhen about 40 years ago. Topics covered include minicomputers hardware, foundations of their OSes and other protocols and technology used, early days of common networks (not necessarily internet) and stone age of computer game development. And, what's cool about it, the whole article is really well written and easy to read for anyone with communicative English and basic understanding of computers - no need to be an expert in geeky terminology from past days. I got so gripped that I've nearly forgotten to get out of work ;P It might be a trip to old days for most experienced MSFN users, for me, and younger folk, it's emotional journey to the lost world form the past, lead by a great tutor. I also recommend checking rest of his website - lots of interesting materials about different topics, mainly IT connected.

Necroposting, but worth it -
You are expected to get used to the things you are trying to get rid off. Even if you won't, your friends will. People knowing, what they expect form OS are minority. LTSB is for embedded, and no one's expected to see OneDrive nag or ads tile on a ticket vending machine

This should be added to the first post. As well as an information about .NET/ Silverlight related things. I once wanted to write quick guide and started, but I failed.

As far as I understand, he's calling it a hoax because some major companies claim it is impossible, while it's more like 'not supported' and rarely occurring, according to what you have said

We'd be glad to know the rest of the spec, mainly motherboard and CPU model. Then someone might be able to help. I'm surprised to hear that, when I was completing my current PC I decided to buy Kingston instead of GoodRAM because it was simply much cheaper

Quick googling says you cannot uninstall powershell 4.0 from windows 8.1 : https://www.petri.com/how-to-uninstall-windows-powershell However, if your Windows 8.1 is professional edition or higher, you might disable powershell via gropu policy: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1183987-disabling-powershell-with-group-policy I have never tried running it, but the policy from the post mentioned certainly exist

What's a luck that there are always a good people willing to care f a things, that are set to be forgotten soon. I have a feeling that some not-really-official KB website will pop up soon...

Dropping WE 2012 by M$ triggered some harvest amongst program users, for the benefit of malware/scam creators. Today, friend PM'd me saying: I guess you should know. Movie maker is freeware, right, so why is it asking to get the licence? I installed it form the Microsoft site... Well, first I thought he mentions the EULA, that pops up at first start, but it occurred that it requested the licence when trying to export the movie. And proceed to this site : No https, no Microsoft logo... I told him that MS does not support the download anymore. He tried to uninstall the software and install 'real' Microsoft security essentials from @vwestlife link (digitally signed this time ^^), but system responds that the software is already installed. According to whois domain is there for quite a long time: But with official download cancelled, we can expect to hear more about this right now...
