  1. Or alternatively - User might manually make 'em work Once I had to use a piece of software that run only single-core on 32-bit systems, some scientific computations. I had to perform the task many times with different parameters and make a comparison of a results. So I had started three different program instances, ran it three times, manually set the affinity, so one program sued only one core (Phenom X3 here) and computation time was no much bigger than running only single instance, despite slow RAM and HDD might have been a choking point. To be honest, I don't know if setting affinities manually was any better than leaving it for system. As far as I've read (afterwards) Windows should do it well enough automatically with no noticeable performance drop, but it gave some (false) sense of control ^^
  2. Can you tell us something more, what have you tried, what is the exact error message, why are you trying to install it manually (should be installable via Windows Update) e.t.c
  3. @oldschool38 For sure it's not like 'there are no viruses for Linux', as many claim. It has it's own security flaws, as probably every big system does. However, on desktop version, there are less malware samples being spotted wild by different Internet Security providers - there are simply less people using Linux, so less people to attack. For example, first ransomware for Linux was spotted wild in November 2015, when Windows ones were already making a huge mess. https://labs.bitdefender.com/2015/11/linux-ransomware-debut-fails-on-predictable-encryption-key/ In general, if you will follow some best security practices, and additionally cover yourself with IS software, you will be as secure as with anything else - you might always catch something. If you are scared, just don't use this XP for anything else than these few games.
  4. As far as I remember, even good old Nero Burning ROM has an option to save projects. I never used that feature, but common sense suggests the straightforward solution to store the files you often need to burn in specified directories, and create a Nero project, that tells the program to burn content of these folders into a CD/DVD. And ofc this doesn't have to be Nero, can be any open-source program that has 'projects' feature. Besides, this made me think for how long I didn't burn any disc, and that I don't even have Nero installed on my current PC o_O.
  5. At least we can be sure they're fixing it soon - working for their own good
  6. Since we're in FF, I'd like to mention I was first really confused with the topic's name. I've read about this Lotus something for the first time... before that, I was wondering what Outlook has to do with good old chiptune https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NES_Sound_Format Yet the topic speaks for itself...
  7. Well, there are still ones hiding on old FDDs and CDs, or on some obscure download sites. I'm curious how pre-NT windows will behave, while attacked by some of the most popular ransomwares (Locky, Cryptolocker, CTB-locker, Cerber, Petya or sth like that).
  8. Can we have a link of some sort? This gets interesting...
  9. No Office 2007 updates as well this week. Nothinig but static... Ah, wait, Flash Player got updated
  10. Actually, not VR, but AR (Augmented reality). Microsoft is most probably preparing to provide Hololens to the public. https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us As for me, it makes much more sense that VR. Instead of something that seems to be useful only for entertainment, AR in this meaning can provide a value for different sort of professionals. That's just my 2 cents.
  11. Well, thanks. I think I've read about attack on the XP, if the machine is connected to the internet while installing. Mentioned at the end of this article http://www.fixitpc.pl/topic/49-zabezpieczenia-robaczywe-ataki-poslaniec/ but I'm nearly sure there was separate article by picassa about it (she's MVP - Consumer Security 2014, 2015, just to give her justice). Just to end this little OT with a bit of sentiment, looking at the first screenshot of the article I've linked reminds me of when we first connected Pc to DSL network (by ISP provided ***** USB modem, no router). It was win 2K, and it started throwing such errors minutes after connecting the net. Hopefully, there were some paranoinds among us, so we formatted the whole drive, reinstalled Windows, brought Keiro personal firewall and a configuration tutorial with lots of 'denies' provided by a geeky friend I've never met, some early avira home instalment was pushed to the system, then we connected to he internet and the whole think started being usable. Not to mention that we had separate HDD for internet and for the regular use, and they were never connected simultaneously :>
  12. Some even prohibit to change these and say that the router is configured via external staff. As for the first, yes - I've read blog posts, where people left their routers for limited time with remote control enabled, set difficult password and enabled full tracking of logging attempts. Daily log form such a device has... hmm, high educational value As for the second, no - I didn't use XP before SP 2, I had Windows 98 and Windows 2000 previously. What's more, I had no DSL internet connection, only 56k Modem that was used once a year due to enormous bills. Personally, I only remember nasty malwares that were taking down friends' Win 95 and win 98 machines down, transferred via FDD, just because, no income from ransomware or spamming included. I've only read about early XP problems.
  13. @NoelC @jaclaz It's not only about the quantity of the vulnerabilities discovered, but quality as well: https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/40889/ Does not seem to be hard to use, isn't it? As for the ways to know your home router was compromised - colleague at work told me once, that he couldn't enter any website from any device, after ISP provided him a new router. Instead, he was being given a site telling him, that his device was most probably hacked and is used in spam campaigns, and thus it was forbidden access to the internet by ISP. However, I couldn't verify this story.
  14. For Vista, 1,09% in September 2016, 1,06% in December 2016.

If you are afraid of closed-source, how do you trust Windows anyway?
  16. Internets say AV on Android is not a real cure: http://www.howtogeek.com/232436/android-has-a-big-security-problem-but-antivirus-apps-cant-do-much/ In theory, if Android provided enough low-level access to antivirus apps, an antivirus app could actually be useful. However, it doesn’t, so antivirus apps aren’t useful now. Adding enough permissions for antivirus apps to function would also open new paths for malware to take advantage of those same low-level permissions.
  17. Well, it wasn't a case 0f 7-zip, cos this was checked before posting anything here. It seems like something got 'itself' fixed in the meantime. I made no changes to 7-zip or it's settings, no system rollback... maybe some update? I have no idea. Case is closed.
  18. Report from my frontline. Searching for updates took 7 hours long, always with one core (2,45 GHz) working at full speed. What's more, I needed to do this three times, cause I forgot that Avast! can spoil the thing and some didn't get installed. However, IE8 cumulative update did got installed within first run and it has no impact on update speed. When everything got in, checking for updates went back to reasonable few minutes, and I kept receiving infinite KB2756918. I solved the isse the same method Yellow Horror did: However, I got some errors onto my face during uninstall process -> maybe errors in KB2973115 made the update broken? Now I keep re-hiding Silverlight updated that I don't need any more (and that are popping up after hiding them half a year ago :/) After all, I have everything installed or hidden.
  19. I'm into that! The question is who is willing to take the responsibility to keep the topic up-to-date and clean :>
  20. Punkbuster likes to break on it's own In Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad I had to reinstall it every few days and reboot my system in order to join. Then I started to play VAC-only servers.
  21. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/176050-firefox-xp-support-will-shift-to-esr-52-drop-in-mainline-past-51/#comment-1129700 So, simply speaking, current stable version or ESR of Firefox works flawlessly on XP. From version 52, users will have to install ESR in order to run FF under XP. Can't say about flash, because I don't use it any more. And I truly recommend it. If you can't recall any website that requires flash and that you have to use, get rid of it CAn't say about uninstalling FF as well, I use only 'civil' branch.
  22. Most probably it's enough to hide this update after installing. Check in "Add & Delete Programs" if the update is present, if it is there's no reason to panic, because update is present and will work. I've had similar issue with some update for Win 7 (And, as the Holy Internets say, not only me): https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/kb3136000/d8f7f9d2-018b-4892-9a38-dc38baa94daf?auth=1 Friend form polish board suggested hiding it and I have no problems since then: https://safegroup.pl/temat-problem-z-aktualizacja-kb-3136000-win-7-pro-x64_10613
  23. Well you might try running the in-game console and connect the server's IP.
