recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes
erpdude8 replied to sybesma's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I like Erik best. at least he's intelligent and understands well our problems. Elizabeth was also helpful when I was asking for the timedate.cpl Q237493 patch. it's too bad I don't hear from her anymore. I'm no longer going to request the Q265528 patch. it's probably crap. MS article 265528 now states that the problem applies to Win95 SP1 and Win98 standard edtion, as in Win98 1st edition and not 2nd edition. At least the Win95 version of the Q265528 fix IS included in the DUN 1.4 update for Win95. -
for those who are wondering if Microsoft will ever release a new standalone version of Internet Explorer. There WILL be an IE7 but it will be compatible with WinXP SP2 only. see Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows article on IE7: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/ie7_preview_1.asp read 'em and weep boys! fat chance of IE7 working under Win9xME, 2000 and NT4.

who cares if WU asks you to reinstall the KB867282 patch. I don't give a ****. so just don't pay attention to WU if you already installed the KB867282 update. If I myself already know I installed that update, replace the two files you mentioned and then visit WU and it tells me to install KB867282, I IGNORE WU because I already installed the security patch. I'm smarter than that! nah error_404. may want to include the enhancements you suggested into Tihiy's Revolutions pack.

exactly Marsden and soldier1st. remember that Drivespace can not compress FAT32 formatted drives/partitions. It can only compress FAT16 partitions. FAT16 can only work with up to 2 Gb partitions and no higher. FAT32 can work beyond 2 Gb and theoretically up to 2 Tb though FAT32 does become inefficient with very large partitions higher than 32 Gb. best to use NTFS on 32 Gb or bigger HDs. i don't see much performance drop when decompressing & compressing files on a large NTFS partition on a superfast laptop PC my brother has. it has XP Home ed. with SP2.

FixitMad has posted at the 2.0 RC1 forum page that he got the Q246615 update from MS. he'll try to send it to me so I'll have to check my email later in the day. -

not so. try asking for a different Win98 patch sybesma. i know with requesting most but not all win98 hotfixes, ms usually get it right the first time. with some of the hotfixes, they say they may not have them anymore and can potentially cause more problems than fixing them. -

guess this forum thread can also be useful when requesting patches for obsolete Win95 and the now unsupported WinNT4. i didn't play close attention to what stuffie699 said for Windows version so he really does use Win98se. in that case follow what MDGx said to get the timedate.cpl fix. like i said in another thread, i'm not going to ask MS again for the Q246615 hotfix. MS didn't put the actual patch in the hotfix package they sent me and only had the readme file. i'm taking a break in asking for MS hotfixes for a few weeks so i can get back to more important things in life. -
Also, let's ask soldier1st and get his opinion on whether NTFS is faster and more reliable than FAT32. he uses a pretty fast xp machine.
-
I don't have it. Different Microsoft employers said that this patch is only for 98 GOLD (FE). It isn't for 98 SE. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Note to MDGx: Already sent you the WinME Q290831 patch. Note to Gape: If the Q265528 is for Win98 FE only, the updated vnetbios.vxd file should be listed as ver. 4.10.1999 and NOT 4.10.2223. So those MS employers are WRONG in their assessment and WRONG in the MS article. SO I think the Q265528 update applies to BOTH Win98 FE AND Win98 SE if the patch really contains v4.10.2223 of vnetbios.vxd file. I'm not going to bother getting the Q246615 vpowerd.vxd patch again. I asked for that patch from MS and I got ripped off. The 'hotfix package' I got didn't have the actual patch and only the hotfix.txt file. Might as well include that in V2.1 of Win98se SP (and not in V2.0) if somebody else is brave enough to request the Q246615 patch from Microsoft.

I take it back. Checking the Nvidia support page: http://www.nvidia.com/page/products_supported.html Nvidia only provides direct customer support only with NVIDIA DVD Decoder. Looking at the Partner Support page: http://www.nvidia.com/page/partner_support.html it says to contact either the computer manufacturer or the motherboard maker. Nvidia says that they do not sell any of their products directly to consumers and cannot provide direct support for them. sorry Tihiy. you'll just have to contact the motherboard maker or PC maker instead.
-
Tihiy, is the Nvidia graphics card a 'retail' card meaning you bought it in stores or is the Nvidia card integrated with the motherboard? if it is the first option (the former) you should have no problem with tech support. if it is the second option (the latter) and the motherboard has integrated Nvidia graphics features then you should contact the motherboard maker about the problem, not Nvidia. Nvidia only provides support for retail cards.

Well, you are right, but you are saying that by compressing the NTFS filesystem you are faster because you transfer LESS data, the filesystem itself remains slower. Under 98 and FAT32 you can use Drivespace to the same effect, though I do not think anyone bothered to make a comparison between NTFS compressed filesystem and FAT32 Drivespace ones. Quite obviously, in times of (relatively) high speed processors and (relatively) slow hard disks, the LESS data you transfer the FASTEST will be the "responsiveness" of the PC. But if (just for the fun of it) you put a SCSI 320 controller and 10,000 RPM SCSI disk on, say, a 400 Mhz P2, you'll want to avoid compression! Also a detemining factor in filesystem speed is the cluster size as opposed to file size, see here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...kc_fil_lxty.asp http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.htm http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm http://www.spcug.org/reviews/bl0401.htm jaclaz <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The MS DriveSpace program is INCOMPATIBLE with FAT32 volumes. Drivespace (in Win95/98) can only compress FAT12 or FAT16 volumes. The WinME version of Drivespace cannot compress any drives because it said so. Drivespace is limited to compressing 2 Gb FAT16 volumes, no higher than 2 gigs. And 2 Gb is the limit for FAT16 volumes. In NTFS in NT4, 2000 & XP you can compress a file, folder or even an entire hard drive. When I install XP security updates the files that are backed up by the updates are automatically compressed and Explorer indicates the compressed files/folders in a different color. Also, NTFS is less susceptible to data/file system errors than FAT16 & FAT32. So the REAL answer to the earlier question of having "integrated" NTFS support in Windows 95, 98 & ME is NO! Never going to happen cuz Microsoft has no plans whatsover to add NTFS support and Win98 & WinME are on extended support (aka. life support) 'til 6-30-2006. MS is concentrating on XP & future Windows versions. So for those who have not gotten that should get over it!
-
Gape, since you no longer mention the Q265528 vnetbios.vxd patch on your Needed Updates list page I wonder if you have this patch. I've tried at least 3 times requesting the Q265528 hotfix from Microsoft and MS hasn't given me the patch with their responses. If you have it, can you send me Q265528 patch? Sybesma was right. Some of those Microsoft support reps are stupid to even acknowledge I have problem and I need the patch to fix the problem. see Sybesma's latest post on 'recommended way to obtain M$ hotfixes' forum thread.

Hd Intensive Work Very Very Slow After Sp2.0rc1
erpdude8 replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
What version of Nero are u using Fredledingue? Run Nero, click on Help and select About Nero. -
guess the 98SE2ME pack wasn't the problem. they might have installed an Austrian pack as Fredledingue said.

I think you'll have to re-install Win98 jaberwock. The vmm32.vxd file gets modified during Win98 setup (not in Unofficial Win98se SP 2.0 setup) so that the vmm32.vxd file can specifically work under your computer. The vmm.vxd file is far different than the vmm32.vxd file. If the vmm32.vxd file is missing or damaged you'll have to fix it only by re-installing Windows. MDGX, I've found the disk where I stored the Q192425 win98 patch and Q290831 winme patch. let me know if you need the patches. these will be the last ones I give to you.

so far it worked ok on my HP computer with WinME. I have yet to try it out on my neighbor's Compudyne PC with Win98fe. I will try out the updated hhupd.exe pack there later in the week since it has been pouring out here in LA. bad rainy weather. mdgx, if you need the Q192425 patch ask Gape. I gave it to him.

It's Tyrolian traditional song. Maybe you installed the Austrian pack? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> mooooouuuuuu-hahahaha! a tyrolian traditional song? how comical. The Folder Options command can be featured under the Tools menu if you install IE 5.01, 5.5 or higher. If you have IE 5.0 or less, then the Folder Options command is not under Tools menu and only featured in View menu. This is assuming the Windows version used is Win98 or NT4. The Folder Options command is under Tools if using Win2000, ME or XP. The "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option is NOT included in Windows 9x/NT4 systems. It's only featured in Windows 2000, ME, XP & 2003 systems. I'm beginning to think you guys may have installed MDGx's 98se2me pack under a Win98se system.
-
maybe the mydocs.dll file is a russian version and not the US english version. Right-click on the mydocs.dll file from the Windows\System folder and choose Properties and click on the Version tab of that file.
-
what was it were you guys installing that you are getting this problem? the Unofficial Win98se SP 2.0 rc1 or MDGx's 98se2me pack?

I want to clarify about my statement on NTFS being faster than FAT32. I use an XP Home ed. system (Intel P3 1.2ghz cpu, 512 Mb of RAM) with FAT32. It ran ok but it wasn't always fast. Converted from FAT32 to NTFS and my system ran a little faster. what I meant to say was NTFS used on a superfast PC w/ Win2k/XP can be a little faster than using FAT32 on a superfast PC w/ Win2k/XP. If you compress a bunch of large files that are space hogs with NTFS, then you might notice a slight speed boost in disk access.
-
jaclaz has got very good points here. I want to add that NTFS file system was designed ONLY for NT-based systems such as NT4, 2000 & higher NT-based Window versions. I don't mind if Win9x/ME users get third party utilities to read/write on NTFS volumes. Win9xME systems will NEVER have built-in NTFS support AND that is just the LIMITATION to Windows 9x systems. COME ON PEOPLE! Utilities that read NTFS partitions on Win9x system will NEVER EQUAL the built-in NTFS support found in Win2000 & XP systems. Little quote from jaclaz about NTFS: >It is even a little slower than FAT32, the good thing is that it is a little less prone >to fragmentation. not really. NTFS can be a little faster than FAT32 on Win2k/XP systems on superfast machines. NTFS has built-in file/folder compression which nobody else but me has mentioned. NTFS less prone to fragmentation, maybe. But still a disk defragmenter tool is needed like Diskeeper to optimize performance regardless of file system. Eventually, files do fragment on NTFS systems & can drag performance down and running a disk defragmenter tool like Diskeeper (or the built-in Defrag tool in Win2k/XP) will speed up file access.

Can't Use Windoze Update Anymore...halp!
erpdude8 replied to HighPingDrifter's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
no problem HighPingDrifter. you could try out V2.0 RC1 SP for Win98se which fixes the 'Windows Update' problem found in V1.62 of the Win98se SP. V2.0 RC1 of the Win98se SP is found at the Softpedia.com downloads site. -
update your Needed Updates list page, Gape: http://exuberant.ms11.net/neededupdates.html Remove Q192425 rnr20.dll off the page. I've obtained this patch last week. let me know if you need it. i'll work on getting Q319571 keyb.com patch from microsoft.

Eh, I take it back in the inclusion of dispex.dll file version 5.6.0.8825. When I used this version and I try to print something in Internet Explorer, I get a scripting error message and the Print dialog box will not show up. darn. Restored dispex.dll file to version 5.6.0.6626 and the Print & Print Preview IE functions started working again. Dispex.dll file v5.6.0.8825 is for Win2000, XP & 2003 systems only and won't work well under Win9x, ME & NT4 systems. so let's just stick with the dispex.dll file (5.6.0.6626) that won't break IE's Print and Print Preview features on Win9x/ME/NT4.
