  1. WinRAR and Winzip are shareware. I know newer versions of WinRAR (v3.x) will use different registration codes than versions 1.x to 2.x of Winrar. see this article on License & Registration of Winrar: http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?id=24&kb=1&kb_article_id=81 jasinwa, if you still doubt that the KB833989 vgx.dll MS04-028 security update does not work when using the IE 5.5 browseui.dll and browselc.dll files in IE6 SP1, download the vgx.dll update here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/c...989-x86-ENU.exe and run it for yourself. Gape's got a point in using the updated browseui.dll file from the IE 5.5 Sp2 kb867282 patch on a system using IE6 sp1. you'll have the security benefit of the updated browseui.dll file instead of the original browseui.dll file from the IE 5.5 SP2 setup files.
  2. note to soldier1st: I asked sybesma by email on requesting hotfixes from M$ a few days ago. He says if MS turns you down, you have to send your request again and again until MS gives you the hotfix you specify. Each time you send a request for a hotfix, a different MS support rep. will respond to your request. you may want to discuss this with sybesma personally. kudos to sybesma for bringing up the topic on requesting MS hotfixes.
  3. How fast is your old notebook, jasinwa? I mean what's the CPU and CPU speed of your notebook computer? Final release of 2.0 may be delayed because Gape and others are trying to add newer files onto there. The more Win98se hotfixes that are added onto 2.0 the longer it will be delayed.
  4. frees has got a point in Gape not updating his home site. but he did update his 'Needed Updates' list page. Note to MDGx. I even tested your hhupd.exe (unofficial HH 1.41 v5.20.3790.1433) pack on my aunt's Hyperdata laptop with Win98 FE and got error message 'INF Install Failure: Reason: The INF File was not found'. I even got that same message on my neighbor's Compudyne PC (Intel P75mhz w/ 64 megs of RAM using Win98FE) and on my old NEC computer (P100mhz with 32 megs of RAM using Win98 SE). I think the HH installer tried to install the files but forgot to check first that the files were extracted to the temp folder. Gape, forget about the vpowerd.vxd 4.10.2225 update. I requested the Q246615 hotfix several days ago but the so-called hotifx package was a FRAUD! MS only included the hotfix.txt file and not the actual 246615up.exe file! Dont know why. So you should remove Q246615 off your Needed Updates list. I do have Q192425 rnr20.dll patch, Gape. requested it a few days ago and installed it onto my NEC machine with Win98se. Email me if you want it.
  5. yup, but only for IE6 SP1. There is no KB867282 IE 5.5 SP2 update for Win98 and IE 5.5 SP2 is now supported by MS only for WinME. If you want the IE 5.5 SP2 version of the KB867282 update you will have to look at the V4 Windows Update catalog site and search for WinME updates. If you are getting the KB867282 update for IE6 SP1 you can install that patch under Win98 and WinME. folow-up on ms05-015 hlink.dll security patches - I downloaded the Win2000 & WinXP versions of the hlink.dll security updates and extracted the files inside by running those patches on my XP SP2 system with the /x switch. I viewed the hlink.dll files from both patches in the WinDiff file comparison tool. Guess what? They are NOT binarilly identical. meaning the hlink.dll files are not exactly the same. Looks to me that the hlink.dll files are Windows specific and if you use these hlink.dll files on a Win9xME system, it'll cause IE to malfunction. so Win98/WinME users will have to wait for MS to make and release a 9xME version of the KB888113/MS05-015 security patch.
  6. I agree with you mkjp on some things (foobar2000 for instance). I usually do only clean installs of Win98SE. Here's my install: 1. format c: /q (my C drive has only 1-2 Gb, and the information kept there is expendable) 2. Install 98lite (+ Win98SE) -> NO IE!!! 3. Install latest drivers 4. Install directx 8.1 5. Install Sesp2.0 6. Install programs (only few: Total Commander, Irfanview, Firefox, foobar2000 or winamp 2.91, a colection of video/audio codecs made by a friend and other programs). My system is a rocket.. Thanks, Gape! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I disagree with step 4 of your installation order, Cooler13. Install DX 9.0c instead of DX 8.1. DX 8.1 and previous releases of DX9 have a recent security flaw mentioned in security bulletin MS04-016 and the security bug is fixed in DX 9.0c.
  7. yeah it sucks that MS can't provide new Win98, 98se & ME security fixes fast enough since the extension of Win98/ME support took effect in Jan. 2004. the ms05-002 and ms05-015 hlink.dll security patches for win98/me have yet to be developed. So they're currently not available at Windows Update. If you look at the 'Security Update Information' section (click on it to expand the details) of security bulletin MS05-015 the WinXP & Win2003 patches have slightly different versions of the hlink.dll file. I like the V4 Windows Update site as well as the Windows Update catalog page. too bad the new version of Windows Update site (V5): http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ will only work for Windows 2000 SP3-SP4, Windows XP SP1-SP2 and Windows Server 2003. The V5 Windows Update site can resume partial downloads, unlike previous versions of Windows Update. if you downloaded a patch from V5 WU and you cancel it halfway, just select that update again and Windows Update will download the remaining portion of the update.
  8. Yes Gape. The 867282 IE 5.5 SP2 update has an updated browseui.dll file, however, this update normally installs under WinME only because IE 5.5 SP2 is now supported only under WinME. You can 'workaround' this problem by extracting all the files from the IE 5.5 SP2 867282 patch to a temp folder and run the command "ieupdate.exe Q867282" from that temp folder and reboot the machine to use the updated files. Current and future IE 5.5 SP2 security patches will normally install under WinME only. A follow up on my last comment. Replacing the IE6 SP1 versions of the browseui.dll & browselc.dll files with the IE 5.5 SP2 versions and the Vgx.dll 833989 IE6 SP1 security patch will REFUSE TO INSTALL!!! It will tell you that the patch requires IE6 SP1 to be installed, even if you already have IE6 SP1 installed. This is one of the IE updates that DO check to see if you are really using the IE6 SP1 versions of the browseui.dll & browselc.dll files and not older versions. BUMMER!!!!
  9. But you won't be able to install other IE security updates if you did replace the browseui.dll & browselc.dll files. I did replace those two files with IE 5.5 SP2 versions one time and I could not install some IE updates. Some IE6 SP1 security patches actually check those two files you mentioned to see if they are really the IE6 SP1 versions and if they are not, those updates will REFUSE to install. I had to restore those 2 files with the IE6 SP1 versions in order to install those other IE updates that refused to install. Anyway I am no longer suffering from the hanging deletes bug (even though I did NOT replaces those 2 files this time) because I delete/shred them from xplorer2. Deleting files from Windows Explorer doesn't completely trash them. Shredding files from Spybot S&D (yes, Spybot has a built-in file/folder shredding tool for obliterating sensitive files) does. There is a big difference between deleting computer files and shredding them.
  10. The error message I got in one PC (intel pentium 1 -75mhz- with 64 megs of RAM) is that it could not find the INF file. I think your html help pack tried to run the hh.bat file but the hh.inf file was not really extracted yet. You need to give it some time (like a few seconds) to check whether or not all the files from the HH pack are properly extracted and then let the pack run the hh.bat file. whatever recent hotfixes I requested from MS are not added to Gape's SP v2.0 rc1, rc2 or final, just include them in SP v2.01 or v2.1. He might want to include the dispex.dll file (5.6.0.8825) from the W2k/XP version of WSH 5.6.8825 addon. I believe the W98/ME/NT4 version of MS's WSH 5.6.8825 addon has dispex.dll file version 5.6.0.6626 (which is wrong) instead of the newer one. what do you think MDGx? should gape put dispex.dll file v5.6.0.8825 in SP 2.0 instead of dispex.dll file v5.6.0.6626?
  11. I did get a chance to test out MemTest-86 horsecharles. Pretty good. A little better than the MS Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. Not sure with RAMExam. The makers of RAMExam have a demo but the demo version is nearly worthless. as for Fredledingue's question, the SP upgrade may support up to 2 Gb of RAM. Win95, 98 & ME can theoretically access up to 2 gigs of RAM and no higher than that.
  12. thanks MDGx. if you view the file version details of opengl32.dll in WinME Explorer it has version 4.0.1381.4. guess it's best to use that one. your unofficial HH 1.41 package worked ok though I ran to some problems. When I ran this on some of my machines I got some error messages. You may want to add a 'time delay' to your pack to ensure that ALL the files are properly extracted to a temp folder, meaning the pack should check first if all the files have been extracted and if they are not the pack should wait first, and when all the files have been extracted, then the pack should install them.
  13. I tried this yesterday...so I will see how deleting a large amt of files works, soon! What I did notice (or is it coincidence?) is that when I went to the MS update page, it said I should install the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867282)... Is that because of replacing the 2 files? Guess I could check it out.... [edit1] yes, one of the 2 is changed...(I forgot which one, I think it was browselc ) [/edit1] <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like I said before, installing IE6 SP1 KB867282 update after replacing the browseui.dll and browselc.dll files with IE 5.5 SP2 versions is a bad idea. I no longer delete a large number of files in Explorer anymore as I use xplorer2 (should be called and pronounced 'xplorer squared') to shred files. Found at the Zabkat.com web site: http://www.zabkat.com/ NO jasinwa! It is NOT because of replacing those two files mentioned that MS Windows Updates page tells you to install the IE6 SP1 KB867282 security update. It has nothing to do with that at all. I did NOT have to replace those two files and Windows Update offered me that security patch regardless.
  14. This is a BAD idea if you guys are planning to install ANY IE security updates for IE 6 SP1. Replacing the browseui.dll and browselc.dll files with IE 5.5 SP2 versions may prevent you from installing security updates or some security updates may install BUT those updates may cause IE6 SP1 to MALFUNCTION! Updates like the IE6 SP1 867282 update include an updated browseui.dll file [6.00.2800.1612]. Then after installing this patch, you'll have to replace the browseui.dll file again with IE 5.5 SP2 version and you may lose the benefits of the security features of the version from the security patch. If you are going to delete a very large number of files AVOID doing it in Windows Explorer. Install 2xExplorer or xplorer2 which is a nice replacement of Windows Explorer and use either one to 'shred' files.
  15. uh, yeah hp38guser! did you not know that M$ is still supporting Win98/ME until june 30, 2006. they mention this on this support lifecycle announcement page: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean1 even though MS provides 'extended' or little support [i almost want to call it "life support"] for Win98/ME they're still making some patches for them. ONLY new IE updates for Win98 & WinME will be posted at Windows Update and nowhere else from now on. Some new Win98 & ME security updates like the 891711 update will NOT be immediately available at Windows Update. The 888113 [MS05-015] "hyperlink" IE security update is currently not available for Win98/ME users at Windows Update. Like with the 891711 update Win98 & ME users will have to wait until it is posted. If you read MS security bulletins MS05-002 and MS05-015 click on the 'Frequently asked questions (FAQ) related to this security update' link. And carefully read the statement below the question: Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition critically affected by one or more of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this security bulletin? now you'll see why MS isn't quick enough to release newer Win98/ME security patches unlike with the Win2k/XP/2k3 patches they release.
  16. I've found a Microsoft site that mentions the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp It's freeware & it might be a good tool to use to check for problems with RAM chips. A better RAM diagnostic tool is RAMExam mentioned here: http://www.qualitas.com/product/ramexam/whatisre.htm This one is not free so you'll have to pay for this one.
  17. You're correct, MajikUF. The MS05-002 - 891711 security updates for Win98/ME are not yet available at Windows Update. I've recently contacted M$ and they still can't determine when the MS05-002 security updates for Win98/ME will be made available. So you will have to wait for a while. perhaps several weeks from now. 891711 update is NOT an IE update, Gape. Read Microsoft security bulletin MS05-002 carefully and expand the 'Security Update Information' sections.
  18. this is a nice alternative than installing the 890175 hhctrl.ocx MS05-001 security updates, which have side effects. the unofficial HTML Help 1.41 pack Mdgx created doesn't have those side effects. and speaking of MS security updates, Microsoft unleashed a major thunderstorm of security updates on Tuesday, February 8. I have to spend time downloading a lot of updates for my brother's XP home edition machine. Note to Gape: be sure to update your 'Needed Updates' list at the exuberant software web site when you have time. Changes I mention next paragraph: remove Q243220 rpcltccm.dll patch as you have already included it in the latest 2.0 RC. I did request the Q246615 vpowerd.vxd patch but the 'hotfix package' MS sent me a few days ago was a ripoff! The hotfix pack didn't even include the actual vpowerd.vxd patch and only the hotfix.txt file. You could try requesting the Q246817 patch but I don't know if it'll be in english or japanese because MS article 246817 says it is for japanese version. So you might want to remove vpowerd.vxd off the Needed Updates list. Also can you add the Q240896 opengl32.dll patch, the Q242941 serenum.vxd patch and Q319571 keyb.com patch on the Needed Updates list. I may try to obtain some or all of these from MS.
  19. i agree with soldier1st 100%. consumer & home users rarely or don't even use Web Folders and I can get rid of the Web Folders icon from showing in Windows Explorer in Win98 by deleting a certain registry key. see microsoft article 892211 on what updated files the Web Folders Update has.
  20. Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but does it mean that, after installing the SP 2.0 RCIb I can put 1Gb of ram in my computer and effectively use 1Gb (without modifying the ini file)? certainly, Fredledingue. just be sure you have installed the right RAM modules for your computer. I assume you are using a relatively new PC that can allow the use of 1 Gb of RAM. Then you can use the memory tweaks Gape mentioned earlier.
  21. CLASYS, I have recently requested the Q290831 patch for Windows ME and will receive it within a day or two. Click on my username to email me when you get the chance if you need the patch.
  22. your welcome, horsecharles. I should have said 'specified', non-English language version in my previous comment. just needed to clarify that.
  23. hmm, to some extent CLASYS might be on to something. not sure why I went too far in saying in completely disagreeing in memory slowing down with age. must have been something I ate that made me act that way. Don't get me wrong CLASYS, I respect your opinion. It doesn't mean I have to agree with everything you say. what do you mean by 'reliable memory'? and have you read the articles (that I bookmarked) written by Fred Langa on questions on how to get the 'right' memory modules. as for me, I do shop at places (such as Fry's Electronics and Best Buy near where I live) where I can find the memory chips that work on my machines. You can use 'reliable' RAM chips as long as your machines support them. like I said before, using unsupported RAM modules (like the DDR ram chip on a non-DDR system) can be as bad as installing supported BUT defective memory chips. The ram chips I bought haven't broken down so my experience is different.
  24. MS Java is history but Mdgx has listed the MS Java build 3809 and 3810 downloads at his Addons page: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm Look in the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine section. I haven't found or encountered any sites that specifically use Sun Java so I do not need it. non-IE Web browsers I use (Opera 8 beta 1, Mozilla 1.75, Netscape 7.2 and Firefox 1.0) work fine w/out Sun Java. let me know if there are any web sites that actually use sun java. Are we getting closer to 2.0 rc2 or 2.0 final yet?
  25. Better go with the TweakUI option to set your Scandisk options but be sure to use TweakUI 1.33 which is the latest version for Win98. the Dos version of Scandisk (scandisk.exe) does not load the scandisk.ini file unless you specify the /custom option from the DOS prompt when Win98 is not running. What I mean is this: 'c:\windows\command\scandisk.exe /custom' Hope this also helps, Horizon.
