Windows 2000 + movie maker + system restore
erpdude8 replied to tobias21774's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
putting xp's system restore under win2000 machine is nice. I'll try that on my cousin's Win2k computer. movie maker is a piece of crap, IMHO. I never use it nor would I install it on any Win2k machine does the XP version of movie maker run under W2k, Dave.net? for Win2k users using the WinME edition of Movie Maker, you'll need to get the updated moviemk.exe file from the WinME Movie Maker patch here. the updated moviemk.exe file is version 1.0.1377.0 -
You may want to look at the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Pricing and Licensing FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...priclicfaq.mspx the FAQ does mention about volume licensing for Windows Server 2003

atyndall, you won't be able to see the Compatibility tab from the games' EXE file directly so you MUST create a "shortcut" to it first. You have to create the shortcut to the games EXE file and then right-click on the games' shortcut icon (NOT its EXE file) and select Properties, then you WILL see the Compatibility tab. Read MS article 279792 VERY carefully (the article says SP2 and SP3 BUT it should also apply to Win2k SP4): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279792

forget about installing Win95 on a different HD partition on the same physical drive, Molly89. Win95 can't work with NTFS formatted partitions. better off trying this with at least TWO physical hard drives. one for 95 (formatted as FAT or FAT32) and the other for vista (format this HD as FAT32 so that both HDDs can be seen by Win95 and WinVista) otherwise, follow prx984's advice to use Virtual PC or VMware

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
The original MemTest86 tool was revised earlier this year (now version 3.3). get it here: http://www.memtest86.com/ I really don't see why CLASYS claims that ALL ram chips "get old" or slow down with age. All the RAM chips I've tested and use don't feel that way. And installing RAM chips that are "too slow" or "too fast" for your mobo can cause them to either be unrecognizable by the motherboard or these chips can permanently crash or lockup your computer for good. And you have to remove the incompatible memory chips and put in the right ones just to get things going again. I did attempt to install a PC133 SDRAM chip on my cousin's eMachine PC that only supports PC100 SDRAM modules. guess what? The installed PC133 SDRAM chip completely froze his computer right after I turned it on. When I put it a PC66 SDRAM chip on his computer, the computer's mobo did NOT recognize the PC66 module so I had to take it out. I had to remove the incompatible PC133 memory module (and the PC66 RAM chip) and put in PC100 SDRAM modules just to make things work again. another scenario: I installed a PC133 SDRAM chip on my HP Pavilion PC that only works with PC100 SDRAM chips. the HP computer did run but the computer kept on crashing and rebooting. All because I installed a RAM chip with a slightly "faster" speed than usual. I removed the PC133 chip and put in just PC100 modules and the HP computer no longer suffered from frequent crashes. So it IS important to use the correct type (and correct speed) of the RAM chips designed for your computer. -
I had been busy for the last few weeks and I am in the process of making installers for the Win95 and NT4 patches (both for the regular 95/NT4 shells and the IE active desktop shells for 95/NT4). I will send these patches to MDGx and will be available on his web site. the explorer.exe patches for the regular W95/NT4 shells are now posted at MDGx's web site and I'll be sending him the other explorer.exe patches that are for the IE Desktop Update under 95/NT4 soon.

but are you using Win98se or WinME? the problem I was describing about ShellIcon BPP to 32 and making the trayicons look good and the desktop icons look worse apply to WinME. If you are using Win98 SE and installed the patched explorer.exe file under 98 SE, the problem should be completely fixed whether you're using 16bit, 24bit or 32bit color depths. Dr. Hoiby in his explorer.exe patch page claims the problem is fixed in WinME/XP. He is half right. Running his 256ColorTrayTest.exe file under an i810 card in 24bit true color mode (IN WINME) and the tray icon test FAILED as the icon displayed only a few colors. After rebooting the WinME computer and switching to 16bit high color mode and running the 256ColorTrayTest.exe file, the test will work by displaying all its colors. So the 256 color TrayIcons problem is partially resolved in WinME in certain color depths but NOT all of them. But in WinXP and higher, the problem is completely fixed in ALL color modes. It looks like the explorer.exe file in WinME HAS to be edited (aka. patched) to fix the trayicons problem for ALL color depths. I'll try to figure that out.

this is why I HATE using 98lite with either Sleek or Micro config shells. remove 98lite and put back the normal 98 shell using the 95-like shell in win98 can break some programs
-
Certainly. documentation on the MSFN site about system restore is inaccurate. the SrClient.dll is not needed under WinME. so, the SRCLIENT.DLL file is for XP and Vista only

do you know where can i download the kernel xp project?
erpdude8 replied to jerome_lagbas's topic in Windows 9x/ME
just to let you know, jerome_lagbas, kernel xp project is now the KernelEx project -
no, tap52384. Contig and Power Defrag require a minimum of Win2k WinME defrag is good enough for Win95/98 IMHO
-
very well said ShadeTreeLee, though it may be a long process the way you describe re-installing MSI
-
though you're much better off having an AV and Firewall installed on your win98se PC, galahs especially if you are using a broadband internet connection (cable/DSL/LAN) which is always on and always vulnerable to any security threat, no matter what version of Windows you use I just make some parts of my antivirus and firewall software load at startup and disable other parts so that performance won't be impacted

unfortunately, Opera browsers can't access certain web sites or can't view them properly. Good thing I have many Gecko-like browsers such as Firefox, Seamonkey and K-Meleon installed on my computers to work around that problem.

You are right it's Nero 7 the current release of Nero 7 is Nero 7.10.1 I have Nero 7.09 on my Vista machine but Nero 6.6.1.15 on my cousin's Win98se PC
-
Uh, the latest release of Nero 6 is version 6.6.1.15a. Just download the Nero 6.6 update here: http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
hey the_guy. can you revise your unofficial Q927779.exe MDAC 2.5 SP3 fix. the Q927779.INF file needs to be changed because a few updated files could not be installed because they were named incorrectly. In the [AD] section, change msdaomd.dll to msadomd.dll and change msdaox.dll to msadox.dll -
then disable the power meter icon, plonkeroo. might have been a registry screw up somewhere but turning off the power meter icon should fix the problem
-
very good, though it would be better to store all the 98 setup files on the HDD so that Win98 won't ask for the CD when adding windows features or when installing new hardware

try Verizon DSL or AT&T Yahoo DSL my brother signed up for AT&T Yahoo DSL last year and they sent us the DSL modem (a 2Wire DSL modem that supports FOUR network connections, meaning I can connect up to 4 PCs with network cables and all 4 of them can use DSL internet at the same time. the 2Wire DSL modem also allows wireless internet connections, woo-hoo!) and instructions to setup the internet service.

tell the creator of mIRC about the problem so that he can revise it to handle Vista's Aero feature. go to the mIRC message board and post your problem here: http://trout.snt.utwente.nl/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

I guess Cleartype can't be disabled completely in Vista no matter what you do. I'm really sorry, RyanJW. Looks like the tips on disabling Cleartype on the web aren't enough to help you out. perhaps you should TELL Microsoft (email them or call them) about your Cleartype problem and maybe they'll add the option of disabling Cleartype throughout the entire Vista OS. It won't happen unless you take action and explain your Cleartype problems/suggestions to Microsoft, RyanJW (and that MS follows up on their promises).
-
but thats the equivalent of saying "every version of Windows sold in the last half decade uses ClearType". True, BUT the way YOU say it sounded somewhat vague and can confuse some people, Xenomorph. Better if you said "Every version of Windows sold in the last half-decade STARTING from WinXP to the current release of Windows use ClearType." < now THIS sounds more accurate AND clear to anybody who don't understand Quote from Microsoft's Cleartype FAQ: And they do NOT need to use Cleartype on their machines, Xenomorph. You just don't seem to fully understand RyanJW's situation. If he doesn't want to use Cleartype and wants to get rid of it from his Vista machine, that's fine with him. I have no problem with that. NOBODY should force RyanJW to like Cleartype, not even I nor you, Xenomorph. For me, I can have Cleartype enabled on the XP/Vista laptops and disabled on my desktop machine with WinXP using the Viewsonic CRT monitor. Cleartype isn't essential for my CRT monitors anyway.

Version of Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack
erpdude8 replied to klaus66's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Look in Add/Remove programs control panel app. It'll tell you what version of the 98se SP you have installed.
