    XPize for Windows 2000

/me would love a special(ized) win2k version, for example > based on the lite installer (with 128x128 icons), > in 16bit high colors (instead of 24bit true color) > without semi-transperent image as in xp (but 100% compatible with win2k), as i realy dont think it will be a problem, to get the icons and resources together (probebly some people whou'd love to help), could this be a concidered option???
  2. thats why most it-profesionals dont run a vertual machine on a single server but rather on a cluster of servers. lets say you have 4 critical tasks, (example: > a database server, > a mail server, > a domain controler (or user-management server), > and an aplication server You'd probably at least nead 3 fysical servers. or more (depend on load) but even if you wanted 4 machines virtualization still could be something for you because, what if one of your fysical machines fails? ? do you want to lose your mailserver or how about having your database ofline for an hour (at least). if it was hosted as a vm cluster the other physical machines would just take over, and your access might become slow, but not not unavail... Pro, if 1 physical machine fails. it may be a botle neck but all your systems will stay online ... Con, running vm software takes resources, so you may nead the extra powerfull (thus more expencive) hardware. con, VMsoftware is expencive to aply, even though there are opensoure variants... you still nead to pay the guy who will set it up for you..
  3. /me reported this thread as agains posting rulez. ...
  4. how does xp sp2 do that. ???? if im not mistaking sp2 contains net 1.0 (right?)
  5. i thought so to, thats why i left i black in my prev post. btw. any good news in the dotNET side of the story???
  6. I has the to now but the darn basterds send me the NL (versions because i emial from a dot NL email addy.. - :S SIGH ....
  7. quistion is why not add it to the domain (or a privat sub-tree) that way none of this is realy a problem...
  8. its rather illigal - so i vote against it (and wisper at Gurgle - that as long as i dont know about it, he is more than welcome to add these files). GRINNNNNNN
  9. stupid qwestion but, would disabling WFP be a 'working' way around it (for now), //(didn't test it)
  10. wish there was an EXE way for this, but i havn't found one without IE recuiremants..
  11. for FILE-hosting, just use GooglePages - its quite ok... and even though it doesn't support FTP the web-interface is goed enought....
  12. have send an email asking for it, but the SA for the company i log in as, kind of has expired (so lets hope they'l reply)
  13. dont you mean Buy?? eh, might be my stupidity but isn't XP64 exactly identcal to 2k3-basic-server, exept that it doesn't install ms-server components, and by default enables sysrestore and theme-/media- services. so in a way you (in my opinion just did do mutch work to get a result - what you could have gotting buy just installing xp64 wich by the way doesn't recuire illigal downloads, (like most you you guys use for these kind of projects). so my kind of question would be: who of you guys using this, actualy have? > a valid 2k3 licence > MS SA (software assurance) > MS BETA access
  14. got a point there....... SMILEZ.

    7 Zip Icons

[way off topic]the story is money - at work we run 2k3 and its cewl ... many things improving on the windows server market but i cant say that about the desktop market... so at work where running windows 2003 SMB with 2k pro clients at home im still running NT4 advanced with 2k clients (6 clients in total). im realy looking forward to the Final of vista, but i still have to see before ill believe.. 2k was just simple, clean, still runs most modern systems (exact 64bit, but wich os does atm there's hardly any 64bit optimized software anyway just ports to it) [/ot] if only id be better at programming, (id love to compleately restyle the UI... Sighs.
  16. what printer, (type brand ect) what os (windows NTx 2000 XP 2003 Vista(longhorn) any patches you installed lately (windows updates? tweaks or software), some more info would help....
  17. quick guide.... A: boot up your system, (in longhorn), and backup ALL your files to another harddisk, a usbstick of a cdrom or dvdrom, B: take your Windows® XP cdrom, and reboot your computer... B²: select a boot device (on most computers hitting the F8key before the windows bootscreen appears will enable this) chose cdrom, B³: now windows xp setup schould be starting... C: in the bleu setup thingy you are asked on which drive you want to install xp, (note you are recomaned to creat at least 2 partions first. this is done by the keys. D = (delete current selected partion) and C = (create partition) for c: (windows partion id recomand the size of somewhere between the 3100 (+/- 3gb) and the 10240 (10gb), megabytes. depending on how mucht software and games you intend to install, for d:\ and maybe other partions no real recemondations from me... but id recoment creating at least 1 of them to store your documents, (that way they dont get lost i you re-install windows next time), anyways.. D: follow the instructions on screen to complete the windows setup, E: Reinstall your software.... F: URE DONE>>>

    7 Zip Icons

16bit is way enought... (and the best part, i would also be compat with 2k ... witch doesn't do true-colors either... by the way i dont dislike the file-type icons, wich imo are quite straight forward and do fite in winXP (default icon sets), but the UI is ........ (no mom i wont swear, i know i promised you .... ghe ghe...)
  19. besides lets face it, uSP may be a lot simple'er to slipstream for a regular user, and also supports updating an already installed system, it lacks international (non us/uk) support, i realy think there shouldn't even be competition, (but rather learn from eatch other), for both the projects have there pro's and cons, (and i for one think that, they can perfectly co-exits, (each with its own targeted usergroups))....
  20. there are some great features in vista. (but i asure you the arn't realy usefull for home use... but as a sys-admin id love to get my hands on .... (for those of the users who require windows that is... but to home users i say.. (if you want a blazingly fast desktop with near to no viruses all office and media support use linux, if you want windows use xp SP3... there is imo hardley anything that a home-users neads in vista.. exapt that new over the top cpu and the extra Gig of ram..
  21. the latest release is 5.1 and does contain IE6 SPI, OE 6, DirectX 7 .... im realy curious about any progress in this matter, and you totaly convinced me that im 'wrong' but in the mean time, id advice you to try a 'clean windows install (doesn't care if is sp 0 1 2 3 or 4, and in unattend.txt add a line with the guirunonce section to W2KSP5.exe /q:a ?? or what ever un-attended switch is posible ... at least as long as no-one has found a fix...
  22. i realy think this is a fun tool to play with, - But, and thats the tricky part, all topic about converting 2k3-serv to XP, just get you a 300$+ windows xp (with no MS-Suport or what so ever), note to those who say, (but you have a 180day free trial - witch can be easily exented with some sort of crack : SCREW YOU (if you realy dont want to pay for your OS use a free one,
  23. hmmz, might be an evil sugestion but, > whats up with dos-based anyways, > does dis also affect windows 2k update (update a current instal), i mean installing 2k from dos / win 9x (or even from win NTx), was never a good idea anyway as M$ often argued it crashes because of memory-isues, on most (old) computers, any feedback????
