  1. mostly what ive sean was, creating prefab images that hade basic software aplied. then where syspreped so all driver info would be re-installed (like the last part of windows setup would be re done). this way you could install the same os immage on more than one machine. with the rest of the aps that wherent on all systems we just created auto-installers (sfx files if you want) so deploying the ghost, we just would go about and selecting the profile of other aps we wanted on the machine, (just runnen a batch file) later on we started to use ghost-cast server 's inbuild new features to intergrate into a MS domain and we could just go about and re-deploy a machine from 1 clik of a button from the server. but there aslo seam to be PXE servers around. that are Free (or GPL'ed)
  2. you could just use ghost 1 example invloves creating large extra driver folder, than install windows on any machine install all required software, run sysprep (deleting all .... (including driver) info) and creating a ghost immage. it would only leave you with the laste stage of windows setup, with pre-installed software or you could use runonce (or whatever) to start a software selection tool...
  3. if you mean by life cd ... a windows PE version based on win 2k the answer is NO!, the NT5.0 kernel does not support any type of MiniNT logon no'r booting from read-only mem...
  4. *just use ryan vm's packs. | creating a service pack is a HUGE project, and xp sp3 WIL come. around about the same time as vista.
  5. well i for one wont bash you for it. even though i use Media Player Classic myself, i realy dont hate Realplayer, it has some stuf that WMP9 hasn't and works quite well, but i only run win2k on my laptop where a minimalistic setup is prefered. else i realy might have given it a chance
  6. spending 30k on a programmer and recruting hime this way .... this cant even legit ... or else you would be gooing to any kind of corporation. also just because they can give you garantees that we cant... so lets please ignore this topic and this *d*ot...

    CD too big

removing printer drivers from your source would save you about 20mb) you could even remove all drivers from windows and instead use driverpacks... saves you even more )
  8. for xp and 2k this is easy ... for win 2k you might want to snif around in the 98se servicepack forum here on msfn... adding un-attend software in 98 is a bit more tricky than 98 and i realy dont know if there is a sysprep like thing for 98 either so an image install isn't that simple.
  9. my apolitgies of i may have get you to think i was trying to get you to upgrade, but i do think its not very realistic to want the lastest software for an outdates OS, unless you realy do it yourself, because in the end it would be a big loss for the many to not use a new (often mutch faster and more optimized for comon hardware) for the sake of a 10year old operating system. im a huge windows 2k fan, i have been beta testing Gurgelmeyers sp5 setup. but the ting is id never ask for example wine-(windows api for *nix) devver to leave his work alone so i could run media player 10 on win2k, (in that case i just try somthing else Media player classic or what-ever its the price i pay for not updating and paying yet another licence upgrade.
  10. System Requirements * Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP this desciption talks about sample code, and also about sys req xp-only to us this would be of no value unlessther you can get some programmer to port it to 2k and create some sort of explorer plugin for it. or whatever.

  13. so discribe what kind of program you have in mind, what neads to be in it. etc. no serious programmer is gooing to even take a look before (S )He is familiar with whats it al about. there might even be techies whod be able to solve your prov without programming (and just using free or opensource stuf, you didn't even know about....

    Article on slashdot

true tom, exapt for 1 bigg isue. you seamned to have the time to figure this out, and also had nearly no one who was looking over your shoulders WTF your was spending your valueable time with... this doesn't make you better, worse or them idiots, it just explains why you could and they cant, so in the end i actualy DO recomand this for every SysAdmin in town, but with a HUGE sidenote, that they them selves still nead to test this, after a depoyment and it would be Unethical to A: blame you for any errors, 2 expact you to give rocksollid support on any demand, etc etc. i think hfslip is just a took that M$ should have released ages ago. but now you did, credits are alllll yours.
  15. oke ur running xp (tweaked it a bit, and got it to work. now lets install software. are you a gamer UT 2004 Nead for speed HS 2 Tompraider 3 1.5ghz cpu - 256ram minimal dx8 compatible vga card [this info from Unreal website] are you a webdesinger Macromedia flash MX Dreamweaver MX 1ghz cpu 256 (512 recomanded) ram [this info from adobe website] are you a programmer Microsoft Visual Express (free version). 'unknown sys-requirements' do you use it for office use pII class cpu 128mb ram [this info from openoffice.org website] or just use it as Media Pc. 1ghz cpu + 256mb (for dvd or tv/dvb -playback) 1,8ghz cpu + 512mb (for recording and playback (timeshift). [this info from media-portal website] so for regular software (nothing extra-ordinairy), is recomanded for newer computers than yours, exapt openoffice ... so face it, your list of computers will (maybe) run, but not perform 'realy well' with modern software. like hondreds of people said, "i got xp to run on a 100mhz cpu) so i aks and??? dit it start within 2minutes (like it should). people cant walk on watter like a fly can, unless they can make 30 steps a sec.... so can they????
  16. i dis-agree. because the Internet Information Service (IIS) is partly dependant on IE files. also IE will have leaks whether you use it or not. just install the latest SP and use Nlite to remove unwanted stuf. - is inho a way better choice. also in the near future Gurgle will release a servicepack with new Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) witch also is a must-go for database driven aplication services. i realy do think you'd rather want to use nlite to A strip MS-JAVA B strip IE (not ie core) C strip MS Media Player 9 (and maybe 6.4 as was if you dont run media services). D some other services E (IIS - if you want apache instead, or dont run webservices at all). F things you might think of yourself. WARNING - ALWAYS TEST IT THOUROUGHLY BEFORE USING IT FOR REAL.
  17. you can get the 7z source, and if you want you could create a shell api (check MSDN). but whether you should. (i personaly think NOT, rather get your hands in the 7zip Filemanager and improve that to a better looking ap (many would love you for it, and is probebly way less work TOO...
  18. yes there wil be (eventualy) it will most likely be the next release (that at least also will contain MDAC and DirectX9 and .NET (if at all posible). BTW - Q @ gurgle, do you still think NET is slipstreamable
  19. in last post i pointed out that a pc hase a avarage lifespan of about 5 years. so than i installed windows 98 Lite on a 100mhz pc with 48mb EDO- ram. than i tryed using moder software, but my 1gb hardisk was full, i wanted to install a new extra drive but it was bigger than 8gb so the system failed with bios error, i tryed flashing the Bios (with a kind of compatible version as i already had the last avail version. it failed it was a 12 year old pc, and i had no alternative but to use as old software als the machine itself was. thats why my 5 year limit isn't just realy srtange, modern software just ask for more resources to get you better on your way. people expact a computer build for 16 color WordPerfect 5.1 (for dos) to run Windows MediaCenter 2006 its just a matter of why should we encourage (or force) them to support windows 9x in the end it will only prevent them from adding security or features. or even support for new windows versions (like xp64, and thats used loads more than 9x). and even if we do so, where is the line, DOS-support, Cobalt support, or does i have to run on an old nasa system thats actualy as tall as your entire house???? i think they've drawn a line and i we want improvements we'd better branch them on Firfox 1.5 (with extrentions and plugins, than slowing down the development of for example the 3.0-branch
  20. you should do that from $oem$\cmdlines.txt just start a batch file and reg merge tweaks.reg or regedit /s regtweaks.reg but id recomand doing it asap in your install and dont wait for runonceEx and the shell is than alread loaded (partly)
  21. and what is this suposed to do (in plain english)?
  22. it seams there are quite a lot of games that either dont, ore work poorly on a x64 windows version but others work great. imho first look at your game - @google = "my game" + xp64 if you find anything try that, first or otherwise just try to install and run it as usual, (your game would most likely be auto installed to *c:\program files (x86)* if that doesn't work try to run it in copatibility-mode with for example win xp or win 2k modus .... and finaly if that doesn't work try a multiboot setup (of find yourself a dif game to play).
  23. so goes on and on the endless debate about choosing between legality and bughunting, i stil think that MSFN is right in not wanting to have any info about stuf to crack MS"s prevention of using illigal versions of it's software, so i think we'd better start talking about getting MS to fix the prob instead of how to bypass it.. btw. Email bombing is not illigal in most parts of the world (as there are just no laws about the max of emails you are alowed to send to 1 specific address). so maybe we'd better start filing support request with this problem (instead of looking for crack), and even though is about just as nasty... at least its not illigal .
